11209 | THOMAS A. KIDD Mr. Kidd is the son of William Kidd, a wealthy farmer of Marlborough. Thomas was born December 14, 1845, and married, January 29th, 1875, Esther Ennis, daughter of James Ennis, of Ennisville, by whom he has had one child, Edith Eveline. Mr. Kidd became a clerk in 1866, and in 1871 bought out the mercantile business of John Meikle, at Burritts Rapids, where he carries on an extensive general store. In 1878, he was elected Reeve of Oxford. Joining the militia in 1864, he secured a second class military certificate, and became Lieutenant of No. 3 Company, 56th Battalion, in 1868. Bert is survived by his loving wife Fern, son Neal and wife Jan of Thompson, Man,; daughter Donna Goodfellow and husband Jim of Flin Flon; grandchildren Cindy and Allan Hand and David and Lisa Goodfellow; sister, Marjorie Cathcart of Perdue, brothers, Perc (sic) and Emerson of Perdue; Rug of Bjorkdale, and Selwyn of Biggar. Bert was predeceased by his parents, sister Hattie and brothers Ken and Garnet. Funeral services were held on Saturday, Jan 21 at 2 p.m. from Northminster United Church with Rev. Merv. Penfound officiating. Interment followed at Hillside Cemetery. Active pallbearers were: Ron Cathcart, Harold Hand, Wallace Hand, Charles Mclean and Allan Shirran. 11211 | Thomas Bryson followed his brothers George and Robert to Fort Coulonge. Initially Thomas farmed at Fort Coulonge but then ran the family store in town that sold items that the Brysons grew on their farms and imported. Later in life Thomas was the Mayor of Mansfield - Pontiac between 1878 & 1881. He was also elected to the Quebec National Assembly but the Assembley was disolved before he could take his seat. Thomas also acquired large land holdings in the Fort Coulonge area late in life. Thomas Bryson (1826 ? January 4, 1882) was a Quebec merchant and political figure. He represented Pontiac in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec from 1881 to 1882 as a Conservative member. He was born in Ramsay Township, Lanark County, Ontario the son of James Bryson and Jane Cochrane. He married Jane Fumerton around 1850. Bryson was mayor of Mansfield and Pontefract from 1878 to 1881. He operated a store at Fort Coulonge. He died in office in 1882 without ever taking his seat in the provincial legislature. 11215 | Thomas James Hodgins - His death occurred in the Ottawa Civic Hospital, following an illness of three weeks after an operation, which in spite of the best medical and careful nursing, he passed peacefully away on Saturday morning. The late Mr. Hodgins was born on the sixth concession of Huntley 60 years ago, being the only son of the late John Hodgins and his wife Eleanor McVeitty. He is survived by his widow, formerly Emma F. Baird, of Fitzroy, and three children, Hartley of Ottawa, Orville and Mary at home; one grandson, Ralph Hodgins of Ottawa; three sisters, Mrs. Charles Milne and Miss Minnie Hodgins of Ottawa and Mrs. Harry J. Shaw of Panmure. The deceased was one of the best known residents of Huntley Township. He lived an unusually active, useful life and his genial manner and cheery personality made friends for him everywhere and he will be keenly missed not only in the family circle and immediate neighborhood, but by a very wide circle of friends throughout the County. The funeral was held on Monday afternoon from his late residence to St. John's Anglican Church where service was conducted by the rector, Dean J. C. Andreson. Burial was in the family plot, St. Paul's 9th line, Fitzroy. Beautiful floral offerings were received from the following: Pillow the family and grandsons; cross, Mr. and Mrs. L. 11221 | Thomas Smart was a farmer living on a farm near Brechin in Forfarshire, Scotland. The name of his farm was "Hunt Hill". Thomas Smart raised a family of five, Alexander "Sandy", John, William, and two daughters. I do not know the name of his wife. Thomas Smart unwisely endorsed papers for his friends in Scotland which resulted in his financial ruin. His wife died and he emigrated to Canada to the township of Ramsay one mile south of the town of Almonte on the Mississippi River. In 1821 he married Lois Buell. There were one girl and three boys born to this second marriage. One son was Bemesley Buell Smart. Thomas Smart and his wife, Lois Buell are both buried in the Canada Pioneer Methodist Cemetry near Almonte. It is nearly the next lot to Thomas Smart's homestead. May 13, 2011 Lyle Thompson, beloved husband of Kathy Turner of Airdrie, AB, passed away, after a long, hard battle with brain cancer, on Friday, May 13, 2011 at the age of 55 years. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on April 4, 1956, Lyle attended Kelvin High School and graduated from the University of Manitoba with a B.Sc. Eng (Civil). Lyle worked for various prairie engineering firms constructing malls, bridges and buildings. Lyle's world revolved around the well being of his children, they were his greatest source of pride. Lyle was a very special man ? kind, courageous, never complaining, forever logical, always seeking knowledge and sharing his knowledge. Photography was one of his joys, when Lyle and Kathy travelled to tropical destinations or his beloved Alberta Rockies many souvenirs were taken. Lyle's easy nature, positive attitude, intelligence and loyalty will be missed terribly by all who knew him. Lyle leaves behind to mourn his passing, his best friend and wife Kathy; children David, Richard, Robert and Stephanie; step-children Carrie (Cameron) Davies and Tammy Gervais (Brendon Langlois); parents Gordon and Doreen; sister Brenda (Ken) Leach and brother Keith (Patti); grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many friends. The funeral of Mr John Andrews was held Thursday afternoon, July 3 from his late residence, 20 Thomas Street, Carleton Place to the Auld Kirk Cemetery, Almonte. The service was conducted by the Rev D. Munro, assisted by the Rev Mr. McCord. Born in Ramsay Township Mr Andrews was a son of the late Thomas Andrews and Rebecca Kemp. he spent most of his life in Ramsay Township near Almonte where he farmed until fourteen years ago when he moved to Carleton Place. He was first married to the late Jennie Munson who died in 1915. His second wife, who was the former Annie Moore died in 1938. He was later married to the former Lucina Cunningham Waddell. Survivors include his widow, one sister, Mrs James Smith, Almonte; two sons, David and William on the homestead; two daughters, Pearl, Mrs Thos Swazzie of Detroit, Mich.; Jennie, Mrs Clemeth Huff of Toronto. The pallbearers were six of the old farm neighbours, Messrs Ernie Robertson, Lester Jamieson, J.B. Turner, Lloyd Watson, Alton Matthews and Wesley Rae. 11232 | Thursday March 9, The Almonte Gazette page 9 Albert Syme Funeral service for Albert Syme was held Monday afternoon February 20, from the Fleming Bros Funeral Home, Lake avenue west, Carleton Place with Rev H.W.W. Griffin officiating. Interment was made at Auld Kirk Cemetery at Almonte. The pallbearers were Clare Syme, Bob McPhail, Hubert Syme, Oral Arthur, Tom MacCracken and James Miller. Mr Syme died in Memorial Hospital, Carleton Place, February 17 following an illness of six months. He was 66 years of age. He resided on Park Avenue, Carleton Place. Born August 10, 1894, in Ramsay Township, he was a son of the late Peter T. Syme and his wife, Sarah McGill. He was educated at Blakeney and Almonte High Schools. Mr Syme was employed for many years in Almonte in the Supertest Service Station later moving to Carleton Place to follow the same line of work. In the years before his enforced retirement because of a heart ailment he worked at the Hawthorne Mill in Carleton Place and the Collie Woollen Mills in Appleton. He attended Memorial Park United Church and his sporting interest was baseball. He was married to the former M. Florence Hodgins, June 6th 1928, at Almonte, and is survived by his wife, a son, Glendon Ross Syme of Brockville, a daughter, Shirley E. 11233 | Thursday, November 3rd, 1967 R. H. Willows Dies Innisville The death of Mr. Russell Hammond Willows occurred on Friday, November 3, 1967 at his home near Innisville. Born on October 6, 1896 at Boyd's Settlement, he was the son of the late Wesley Willows and his wife, Margaret Hammond. After receiving his education at Boyd's and Carleton Place, he farmed in the district all his life time moving to Innisville last June. Mr. Willows took an active part in the life of his community. He was an elder in Boyd's United Church for many years. He served on the local school board and after its inception on the Lanark Township School Area Board. At the time of his death he was president of Boyd's Cheese Factory and a member and past president of the Lanark County Milk Committee. He was a former county director of the Ontario Cheese Producer's Association and a committee member on the Ontario Cheese Marketing Board. His first wife, Hattie Walker, predeceased him in 1928. He is survived by his wife, Merle Henrietta Tennant; four sons, Gerald, Keith, Raymond of Boyd's; Sterling of Peterborough; six daughters, Dorothy, Mrs. Cecil Munro, Kingston; Feryn, Mrs. John R. McGill, Pakenham; Elva, Mrs. Alvin Kelford, Ferguson's Falls; Ellen, Mrs. Gilles Lalonde; Beth and Heather Ann of Ottawa; a brother, Earl of Boyd's; sisters, Mrs. Russell Craig; Olive and Mabel of Carleton Place and 11 grandchildren. A brother, Wilbert predeceased him in 1949. The body rested at Fleming Brother's Funeral Home, until Sunday, November 5, thence to Boyd's United Church for the funeral service at 2:30 p.m. Services were conducted by Rev. K. J. Murray and Rev. Survived by family in Cambridge, sister Kathleen Rabak (Amedeo), nephew Peter and Patricia Rabak and their daughter Karolina Rabak and friend Albinio. Also survived by numerous siblings and other family members in Ontario and Saskatchewan. Cremation has taken place. Interment will be held at a later date in Parklawn Cemetery, Cambridge Toop, Nancy Jane "Janie" Passed away peacefully at the Guelph General Hospital on May 3, 2014 with her sister Kathleen by her side. "Janie" Toop of Cambridge, ON., formerly a resident of Pakenham, at the age of 68. Daughter of the late Oliver and the late Helen (nee Sherrard). Sibling to Dianne, Oliver, Sharon, Sharleen, Sheilagh, Fred, Kathleen, Wilfred, Percy "Bud", Karen, Orville and Gwen. Predeceased by sisters Marilyn, Brenda and Patricia. 11236 | TOPEKA ? Services for Arden Clawson, 79, Topeka, who died Sunday in a Topeka hospital, will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Topeka's Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home. Burial will be in West Lawn Memorial Gardens, Topeka. Mr. Clawson was born Dec. 25,1901 near Grand River, Iowa. He had lived in the Linwood community for 42 years before he moved to Topeka in 1978. He was a retired farmer and stockman. He married Alice Rarick Feb. 24, 1934 in Lawrence. She survives. Additional survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Janice Coffee, Manhattan; a son, Eldon, Topeka; a brother, Roy, Osceola, Iowa; and five grandchildren.
