11360 Widely Known Physician Is Taken by Death
Dr. William Charles Meacham of 152 North Scoville, distinguished surgeon and a resident of Oak Park for nearly 60 years, died Monday night at his home after a two weeks' illness.
Ailing with a heart condition for some time, Mr. Meacham's death resulted from a fall down the icy rear stairs at the home two weeks ago.
Dr. Meacham was a widely known physician and surgeon and had maintained offices in Chicago for many years. An industrial surgeon, he also was physician for the Chicago Black Hawks and the Chicago Cardinals' football team.
Brought to Oak Park by his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles S. Meacham, when he was but an infant, he made his home in the village throughout his life, and was widely known as a surgeon and sportsman.
Born in Peoria, Ill., on July 11, 1886, he attended the Oak Park schools and St. John's Military academy at Delafield, Wis. He later was graduated from the University of Illinois College of Medicine with the class of 1910. Before beginning his long years of practice, he interned at Cook county hospital and St. Luke's, and then began his career in medicine and surgery in Somonauk, Ill.
At the outbreak of World War I, Dr. Meacham enlisted in the medical forces in 1917, and since he had had military training, soon was made captain of an ambulance company. He went overseas in January, 1918, and after being in charge of ambulance companies 19 and 16, was made a major and director of the Second Division ambulance corps, with 580 men under him.
Attached to the Second division, which shared honors with the First division in seeing the most fighting, suffering and the most casualties, his company served throughout the heavy fighting in the famous battles at the Toulon-Troyon sector; the Aisne defensive, at Chateau Thierry at the Aisne-Marne at the battle of Saint Mihiel and at the Meuse-Argonne. His division was the first to reach the Rhine, and he was one of 150 men left in his ambulance division to return home.
Again out of service he moved his family to Oak Park and for many years they resided at 900 Fair Oaks.
Dr. Meacham maintained offices in Chicago, where he became an industrial surgeon and conducted a private practice as well. He also formerly was an excellent golfer and a crack shot in hunting.
He leaves his widow, Mrs. Katherine Schreiber (sic) of Riverside and Thomas Meacham of Oak Park; a nephew Paul Bate of Oak Park; and a brother and sister, Dr. Hulbert F. Meacham and Mrs. Kathleen Joyaux of Bartlett, Ill.
Services will take place at 1 today (Thursday) at the Postlewait chapel, with interment in Forest Home.

11361 Widespread was the deep regret expressed over the very sudden death of Mrs. J.D., a lady who belonged to one of the best known families in this part of the country. She died on Monday morning shortly after midnight.

Mrs Robertson, who was in her 72nd year, had not been in the best of health for some time, but there was no anticipation that her illness would terminate fatally so soon. Indeed she was out driving on Sunday afternoon with her son, and in the morning Mrs Robertson and other members of the family had attended the communion service in Almonte Presbyterian church. About midnight she complained of diziness, and became gradually worse. Half an hour afterwards, despite the best of care, she passed away. Mrs Robertson had suffered for some time from attacks of dizziness, and had one in church a few years ago.

Her maiden name was Sarah Jane Scott. She was the daughter of the late William Scott and Elizabeth Hampton. She was married to J.D. Robertson in 1869. they had nine children, who with her husband all survive. Thus her death is the first break in the large family. the children are William H. Robertson, of Ramsay; George of Peace River; Edward, of Stettler, Alberta; Ernie, at home; Elizabeth (Mrs A.H. McLean) of North Battleford, Saskatchewan; Eva(Mrs Alton Matthews) of Ramsay; Edith (Mrs Wm Anderson) of Ramsay; Sadie (Mrs W.J. Haire) of Toronto; and Ethel at home. One sister and three brothers also survive: Mary (Mrs William Robertson of Union Hall; Thomas Scott, James Scott and William Henry Scott, of Manitoba.

The funeral which was held on tuesday from the family home to the Presbyterian cemetery on the 8th Line of Ramsay, was very largely attended. Relatives on both sides, themselves numbered very many and their were many old friends from a distance. Mr robertson and his son william are amongst the most respected elders of Almonte Presbyterian church and so there was a large representation from that congregation. the automobiles and other conveyances must have strung out over a mile as they proceeded slowly to the cemetery.

The services at the home and grave were conducted by Rev J.D. McCrae, her minister, and the pallbearers were: Messrs Alton Matthews, Roy Roberston, William Miller, William Anderson, Robert Young and W.E Scott.

A High Tribute
A Bozeman, Montana, paper referring to the death of Mrs R.D. Steele, had the following to say: "Mrs R.D. Steele, wife of the well known Bozeman banker, died Thursday afternoon, after an illness of many months. Mr Steele leaves tonight to convey her remains to her girlhood home in Canada, where the interment will be made in the family plot. Mrs Steele was a noble, kindhearted, lovable woman. Of a retiring disposition, her many excellent qualities of mind and heart were known to her intimate friends only, and they knowing its rare worth and beauty, cherished it as a precious possession during her life time as they do now, when her soul has returned to Him who gave it and her lifeless form had been given into the keeping of mother earth in whose cool bosom there is peace and rest from all pain evermore. Besides her grief stricken husband, sister and little daughter, aged 2 years, and many sincere friends in Bozeman, deceased leaves an aged mother and several brothers and sisters in the east to mourn her loss. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the sorrowing husband and family and mourn with them."

11392 Wife of Samuel SIMPSON
Who died Aug 2, 186?
Aged 23 Yrs.
Kidd, Sarah Jane (I3706)

11393 Wife of Stephen Caul, to whom she wed on Jan. 31, 1882 in the Dakota Territory. Sykes, Margaret "Maggie" (I22197)

11394 Wife of the late Barry George Newman, devoted mother to Duncan (Melody), Joanna (John) and Charlotte (Bruce). Much loved Granny to Patrick, Nicholas, Robert, Andrew, Peter and Robin. Predeceased by her sister Elaine Roy. Private family service. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to Dans La Rue.
Mum was small town royalty. She grew up in a frontier mill town in the Ottawa Valley, the daughter of a shopkeeper. After the war she set out for Europe with a friend, travelling by boat and train taking in the sights. Later, armed with a high school diploma and a typing course, she took an apartment in Ottawa. For the next 10 years she witnessed history, working with three prominent figures of the day.
She was personal assistant to Duncan MacTavish, a lawyer, senator and advisor to governments.
She worked for Paul Martin Senior, deputy prime minister and minister for health who brought in universal health care. Mum remembers discussions about the legislation to make seat belts mandatory in cars, prompted by the deaths of movie stars (and Duncan MacTavish). She was also present for sensitive talks with the Russians at the United Nations. She would fly to New York in a Canadian military plane, with her steel filing cabinet and typewriter, and set up shop in the Beekman Tower. She recalls going out on the town with the pilots, eating lunch at the Automat and enjoying New York in simpler more glamourous days.
She worked for Mohammed Ikramulla, High Commissioner for Pakistan and one of the fathers of Partition. Joan took him and his family across Canada on the famous Vista train, visiting the mosques with ceremony. When Ikramulla was impressed with a desk in a scene in a Clark Gable movie, Joan had the job to contact Hollywood and buy it.
After that time with diplomats and politicians, she married an engineer, Barry Newman, a Cambridge graduate who was a young full professor at McGill University in the field of aeronautics. In 1961 they bought the house in Montreal West that housed the family and that Joan remained in until 4 days before her death.
Joan is remembered as a strong personality, charismatic, well turned-out. Many people enjoyed long chats with her on her porch over the years.
And, for those who are curious about longevity, she lived until age 95 with no major health problems even though she had smoked when it was popular, never exercised, and loved brown sugar.
