11478 Word reached Almonte last Thursday that Mr John Neilson, of Pakenham, and formerly of Ramsay, had died suddenly that morning at the house of his daughter, Mrs McLean, of the Village of Pakenham, whither he had walked from his own house on the Arnprior Road, about a mile. He complained on arriving of not feeling well, and Mr McLean, seeing that he was in pain, got him to lie down, and fetched a doctor, but by the time the latter arrived Mr Neilson was feeling better. The Dr however, advised him to keep himself quiet, and he would write out a perscription, and the deceased asked him, to add the instructions for taking it also, as his memory was getting bad. The Dr seated himself at the table and commenced writing, but shortly after turning around to speak to his patient, when he found that he had ceased to breathe. The deceased was the brother of Messrs Matthew and James Neilson, of the 11th line of Ramsay, and was related by marriage to many of the residents of that neighbourhood, who heard of his sudden end with deep regret. Mr Neilson up to about two or three years ago lived on the town line between Ramsay and Huntley, and then he sold his place and went to live in Pakenham to be near his daughter. the deceased was well known as a great reader and a man of more than ordinary intelligence, profiting by what he read. To a very large number of friends who highly respected him, the intelligence of his death was a source of great grief, and all beat testimony to the virtues of the deceased. Neilson, John (I8175)

Samuel Ritchie Is Called By Death

Veteran of World War Laid To Rest With Military Honours

One of Almonte's well-known and respected residents passed away on Wednesday, December 23rd, at the Rosamond Memorial Hospital, in the person of Mr. Samuel H. Ritchie, at the age of 48 years. Mr Ritchie had been in poor health for some time as an aftermath of the World War in which he served for a number of years. He contracted Trench fever overseas and this undermined his constitution to such an extent that his life was cut short.

Mr Ritchie was born in Pakenham, a son of the late J.R. Ritchie and Abigal Hillard. While he was a young boy the family moved to Almonte where deceased lived for the remainder of his life with the exception of the period during which he served in the army.

In 1916 when the Great War was at its height Mr Ritchie joined the 130th Lanark and Renfrew Battalion and upon going overseas was transferred to the Toronto 3rd Battalion. He served until his health broke down, when he returned to Canada in June, 1918, and resumed his trade as an electrician. Although not very well Mr Ritchie was able to be about until a couple of weeks ago when his trouble became acute and he was removed to the hospital where he suffered greatly and bore it all with remarkable fortitude and patience.

In 1908 deceased was married to Mae Monterville of Almonte, who survives him with three sons and one daughter, namely, Lorne, Howard, Harold and Hazel. Surviving him also are four brothers and one sister: George in Vancouver; James and Ernest in Saskatoon; Gordon in Almonte, and (Muriel) Mrs Walter James of Almonte.

The funeral was under military auspices and was held Saturday afternoon from his late residence, Water Street, to the Auld Kirk Cemetery. Services were conducted at the home and graveside by his pastor, Rev. Wm. Air assisted by Rev. J.M. Rutherford. About 30 war veterans marched in the cortege and at the cemetery the Last Post was sounded on the bugle. The pallbearers were six returned solders, Stanley McLaren, Robert McLaren, Harry Gilmour, Allan Jackman, Dr. G.B. Halladay and Harry Houston. Among the floral offerings received were wreaths from the messenger staff of the Canadian Senate where he had served for several parliamentary sessions; from the Great War Veterans of Almonte, and the Women's Institute. Among those from out-of-town who attended the funeral were: Mr and Mrs James Ritchie, Saskatoon; Mr and Mrs Thos J. White, Watertown, N.Y., Mr and Mrs Jack Kewly, Mr Jack Clark, Mr Alex Harris of Arnprior; Mrs George Hirons and daughters Beatrice and Joan, Mr and Mrs J. Kerr and Harry Gilmour of Ottawa, and Mrs Daniel Miller of Carleton Place.

War Nurse Dies After Long Fight With Ill Health
Miss Christena Stewart Was With Navel Forces In the Great War
Served in the Mediterranean, In Egypt and Other Parts of War Zone, Her Health Broke Down Under the Strenuous Duties She Underwent.

Mr Alexander Stewart was called to the Military Hospital, London, on Saturday by the very serious illness of his sister, Miss Tena Stewart, R.N., who passed away on Monday afternoon about 3 o'clock. Miss Lizzie Stewart, of Toronto, accompanied by Misses Margaret Stewart of Montreal and Miss Mabel of Toronto, accompanied the body which arrived at home on Tuesday evening. The sympathy of the whole surrounding country goes out to Mr and Mrs Donald Stewart and family in the death of their eldest daughter, Christena May.

Daughter of the Farm
Miss Stewart was born on the farm from which she was laid to rest. Although just in the prime of life, it falls to the lot of few people to see so much or so varied a life. Educated in the Public school at Appleton and at the High Schools of Almonte and Carleton Place and after teaching school for a few years she went to Winnipeg where she and her sister, Ethel, now Mrs Dr (Harvey) Wilkins Morley, trained in the Civic Hospital for the nursing profession. When the war broke, both volunteered for service and were accepted. Miss Tena was with the navel forces in the Mediterranean, in Egypt and other parts of the war zone. So strenuous did the life prove that it left her with a weakened constitution. Instead of being discharged when the war was over, she was sent to the sanatorium at Gravenhurst. From that time until her death she had been putting up a fight for life that was the wonder of all who met her. With a brave bright face and a courageous heart she faced the struggle with ill health, with never a showing of the white feather, faced it as she had faced her job in war time with a smile and a cheery word for all with whom she came in contact.

Seeking For Health
During these years Miss Stewart had taken many a long hard trip in search of health. To Arizona and to Vancouver, she went, and only this summer she made the tiresome trip from Vancouver to Almonte. In the annals of Almonte and Ramsay Miss Stewart will find a high place, She lived a beautiful life and when her country was in the throes of war, she saw her duty and she did it. She made the supreme sacrifice. The immediate relatives to mourn her passing are her father and mother, her brother Alexander on the home farm, and three sisters, Mrs Dr Wilkins Morley, of the U.S.A., Miss Margaret in Montreal and Miss Mabel in Toronto.

There was a short service at the home of her parents, Mr and Mrs Donald Stewart, near Appleton, and the remains were taken to St John's Presbyterian Church, where an impressive service was conducted by Rev W.H. McCracken, minister of the church, assisted by Rev J.M. Rutherford minister of the Reformed Presbyterian Church. Interment was made in the family burying place in the Auld Kirk Cemetery. The pallbearers were six returned soldiers. Messrs W.R. Caldwell, George E. Scroggie, and J.L. Craig, of Carleton Place; Dr E.F. McGregor, Wilmer Campbell and Max Young, of Almonte. Among the many beautiful floral tributes were a blanket of flowers from the family and a wreath inscribed to her memory from the Canadian Nursing Sisters, which was placed on the Nursing Sister's Tablet in the Hall of Fame, Parliament Buildings, Ottawa, during the Armistice Day Service.

Sourdough's Last Wish
Dies With His Clothes On
Declaring that he was going to die with his clothes on, Herbert Simpson, aged 76, a former Yukon prospector and ex-serviceman, fulfilled his last resolution on Saturday.
Mr. Simpson, who resided at 240 Twelfth avenue west, had been ill for some time and, despite encouragement offered by his physician, said he knew he was going to die and for the previous four days had lain in bed clad in his shirt, socks, trousers and sweater.
Born in Ontario, he spent many years placer mining in the Yukon, and was one of the countless prospectors who took part in the Klondike gold rush in 1898.
At the outbreak of war in 1914 he travelled to Winnipeg and joined the P.P.C.L.I., with which he served for the duration of the war. Following the war he came to Calgary and had resided here until the time of his death.
He is survived by his brother, Dr. R. M. Simpson of Winnipeg.
