Joseph Harper Was Popular Salesman In Eastern Ontario
Almonte lost a popular citizen who was well-known throughout the Ottawa Valley, Monday, April 29th, when Joseph Harper died in the Rosamond Memorial Hospital in his 73rd year. He had been in failing health for the last six months but was not confined to his bed until two days preceding his death.
Covered Ottawa Valley
Mr Harper was one of Almonte's newer citizens, having come here when he retired from business in Ottawa in 1955. He purchased a fine bungalow at the corner of Church and Country Streets where he resided with his wife. While he was not a resident of the town for a very long period, he had many friends here he had been a commercial traveller from his youth until 1929 when he was made branch manager at Ottawa for the Dominion Rubber Co. Ltd. In the old days he called on businessman all through the Ottawa Valley for H.M. Bate & Son wholesale grocers, leaving their service in 1910 to become a salesman for the Dominion Rubber Co. In both capacities his headquarters were in Ottawa and his territory was this part of Eastern Ontario. He made many friends through his business connections and also because of his activities as an ardent curler and angler. He took an interest in these outdoor recreations and others until the last. Even after he was not in the best of health he donated a handsome trophy to be competed for each year by the members of the Rideau Curling Club and Almonte Curling Club.
Lived In Ottawa
The late Mr Harper was born in Forester's Falls, Renfrew County, a son of Joseph Harper and his wife Matilda Elliott. He was brought up and educated there before the family removed to Kinburn. As stated before, he went into business as a salesman at an early age, travelling out of Ottawa. Mr Harper married the former Nellie Ferguson of Kemptville who survives together with two daughters and two sons, namely: Mrs R.P. Guselle (Betty) St Lambert, Que; Mrs W.H. MacDonald (Noreen) Halifax; Capt Douglas G. Harper, who had returned from service in Germany and arrived in Almonte just in time to greet his father before death ensued; Mr John J. Harper, St Lambert, Que, and one daughter, Nora, deceased, There are, also 11 grandchildren Mr Harper also leaves three brothers and five sisters: Mrs James Harper, North Hollywood, Calif., who flew here and visited him in August; Albert in Windsor, Ont; and a half-brother, Robert, in Bissett, Man; Mrs J. Jeffrey (Margaret) Ottawa; Mrs R.A. Vance (Mabel) Galetta; Mrs Arthur Barnes (Evelyn) Arnprior; Misses Edith and Louise of New York City. Mrs Cornish (Mary) of Belleville, Ont, predeceased him.
Survived Boat Sinking
Mr Harper is the last survivor of what is known as the "Mayflower disaster." This occurred in Nov of 1912 when, as a salesman he was making a trip from Berry's Bay to Combermere on board an old passenger and freight boat known by the above name. It foundered in the lake early in the night. Thirteen people perished but four swam to an island and survived the dreadful hardship of the night and half the next day, when rescue came. Mr Harper had a charming manner which was a great asset to him in his public relations, especially as it was so obviously sincere. Businessmen on whom he called were always glad to see him and if they did not have an order for him on that particular occasion he was just the same pleasant man and got one the next time. He was a veteran member of the Rideau Curling Club in Ottawa. When he came her he joined the local club and was of great assistance the first winter while health held out. He was a member of the Ottawa Rotary Club for upwards of 32 years; of the Rivermead Golf Club and of Doric Lodge, A.F & A.M. and the Scottish Rite. The funeral was held this Thursday afternoon from the Comba Funeral Home with Canon J.W.R. Mekin officiating. Honourary pallbearers were Messrs H.A. Spence, Norman G. Foster, Karl D. DeMorest, F.L. Price, J.E. Northwood and Arthur Palmer, all of Ottawa. Interment was in the Auld Kirk Cemetery. There were many beautiful floral offerings from organizations and individuals in Ottawa, Almonte and other places. Active pallbearers were selected from friends of deceased in the local curling club.

?b?Harvey Boal Dies After Being Crushed
By Heavy Vault Door?/b?
Mr Harvey Boal, an employee of Mr Howard Davey, local building contractor, suffered fatal internal injuries early Wednesday afternoon when he was pinned against the wall of a new vault in the Bank of Montreal building by a 2 ? ton door that was being moved into position. He died in the Civic Hospital two hours after the accident. This heavy piece for the new vault that was constructed in the local office of the Bank of Montreal this summer. arrived by truck and was moved into the building last night. It took about five hours to get it to the back of the building where the vault is located. Workmen had succeeded in moving it through the doorway of the vault, had raised it up on rollers and were moving it into position when the accident happened. Carman Denny and Alex Spinks were on one side of the big iron slab and Mr Boal was on the other when it slipped off the roller and pinned the victim against the wall. He was held there for upwards of half an hour while men tried to release him. This was finally done by man power and hydraulic jacks. Mr Boal was conscious all the time. Dr O.H. Schulte was in attendance and he was removed to the Rosamond Memorial Hospital in the Kerry-Scott ambulance where he was given first aid and then taken to the Civic Hospital in Ottawa.

?b?Final Tribute To Popular Young Man?/b?
The accidental death of Harvey Louis Boal on Wednesday afternoon, Aug 27th, was mentioned in the last issue of this newspaper. It happened early in the afternoon and although the Gazette was on press, a story reciting the bare details was published. Mr Boal, who was only 41 years of age, was working for the Almonte Building Supply Co., which is headed by Mr Howard Davey. This concern had the contract of building a new vault and making other extensive alterations in the basement of the Bank of Montreal Building. It was while helping to work into position a 2 ? ton door for the new vault about 1.15 p.m. that the accident which was to prove fatal occurred. Men were moving the big slab of steel forward on rollers and in some way it slipped off and canted to the side Mr Boal was on, pinning him against the wall. It took almost half an hour to release him and then he was rushed to the Rosamond Memorial Hospital by Kerry-Scott ambulance where first aid was given and he was taken straight to the Civic Hospital, Ottawa. He died a few minutes after arrival there. This sad affair cast a gloom over the large section of people in town and district who knew the victim. He was a pleasant, light hearted obliging chap who knew a lot of people and who was very much liked by them. Harvey L. Boal was born on a farm in Ramsay Township, a son of Stanley Boal and his wife, the late Mabel Miller. After receiving his education in the local schools he joined the Stormont and Dundas Regiment and went Overseas in the Second World War. He was on active service on several western fronts including Germany at the last of the struggle. After returning home Mr Boal was employed in various mechanical capacities. For some years he was in charge of the line maintenance for Lanark and Carleton Counties Telephone Co. and when this was taken over by the Bell he worked for it for a time until the merging operation was over. After that he went with the Almonte Public Utilities Commission and he continued with them until he had a serious accident getting in contact with a live wire while doing repair work on top of a pole. His hand were badly burned and he lost a couple of fingers. But Harvey had a lot of courage and he was an optimistic fellow. This handicap he took in stride and did good work for years with Arthur W. Smith as an electrician and latterly with the construction firm headed by Mr Davey. In 1942 he married the former Ellen Green who survives togther with one son, Bill. He also leaves his father and three sisters, Mrs Orville Abbott (Lulu) of Brockville; Mrs Clare Syme (Ione) Ramsay; Mrs Clarence McInerney (Jean), Minden The late Mr Boal was an active member of the local branch of the Canadian Legion under whose auspices the funeral was held with service at the Kerry-Scott Funeral Home at 12.30 Saturday. The reason for choosing this time was that Rev James Ritchie of Presbyterian Church was away from town and Rev J. Ray Anderson of the Almonte United Church had two wedding ceremonies to perform in the afternoon. But in spite of the noon hour arrangement it was one of the largest funerals ever held in Almonte as host of friends paid a last tribute to this popular man whose life was cut off tragically at such an early age. Among those who attended the funeral from distant points was Dr Jos Teich of Toronto who fondness for sports created a tie with the late Mr Boal when Dr Teich was practising here. Pallbearers were: Messrs Howard Davey, F. Honeyborne, Cliff Robertson, Ray Proctor, Howard Boal and Millar Struthers. Among the beautiful floral tributes were pieces from the following clubs and organizations; Presbyterian Heather Club. Employees of H.R. Davey Construction, A.W. Smith Electric and Geo Julian, Senior Baseball Team, Supertest Warehouse, Carleton Place, Manager and staff of Bank of Montreal, Producers Dairy Local No 440, Almonte Producers Dairy Employees Club, Producers Dairy Limited, Almonte Bell Telephone staff, Employees of Almonte Public Utilities Commission, J.L. Erskine and I.G.A. staff, G.M. Hill Motors, members of Happy Hopeful Hunting Club and Blakeney W.A.

?b?Final Tribute To Geo W. Jones Local Musician?/b?
His many friends and associates in the Almonte district were sadden by the death, in his 74th year of Mr George Jones on April 25th, 1962 at the Almonte General Hospital. His was a full and interesting life, devoted to the many aspects of music, best known of which was his work as teacher, organist and choirmaster. His church work in Almonte spanned 32 years and included the choir directorship of several denominations. At the time of his death he was organist and choirmaster at St John's Presbyterian Church, Almonte. Mr Jones was born in England and showed musical ability at a very early age. He commenced violin studies at the age of seven and this instrument remained his first love throughout his life. His childhood years were spent in Portsmouth, where at the tender age of fifteen, he conducted a fife and drum band which won first prize in the Portsmouth and District Music Festival. His prowess as a teacher was apparent, even as a young man, in the successes of his pupils in festival competition. It is important, at this point, to stress the fact that the music festivals held throughout the British Isles are, and always have been of the highest standard and competitors expect and receive, not praise and laurels, but constructive criticism. Mr Jones' music festival activities were climaxed by his appearance at the famous Crystal Palace in London, on the occasion of a Command Performance by massed festival choirs, all winners of the coveted gold medal in their respective local competitions. This Royal Concert was the event of the year in London's musical circles and must have been one of the proudest moments of his life. At the age of twenty-one and after gaining his associate diploma (Royal College of Music) Mr Jones came to Canada and embarked on a successful musical career in the Ottawa area. He married the Eliza Dower of Metcalfe who bore him one son and four daughters. They are, Vivian (Mrs Ivan Hamilton) of Carleton Place; Gladys (Mrs Edgar Wilson) of Ottawa; Phyllis (Mrs Clement Boal) of Sudbury; Kennerly of Detroit, Mich and Viola, predeceased. His second wife, the former Ila Mae Munroe continues to reside in Almonte and is well known and loved in this district. The funeral was held from the Kerry Funeral Home to St John's Presbyterian Church and was conducted by the Rev Leslie Elder. A large congregation was present to pay its last respected to a well-loved and greatly respected figure. Active pallbearers were, Mr Wilbert Fulton Mr Lloyd Watson and Mr Harold Blanchard, (representing the Session of St John's Presbyterian Church), Mr Howard Sadler, Mr Thomas Voyce and Mr Raymon Munroe (personal friends of the deceased). Six members of St John's Choir acted as honourary pallbearers. Interment was in the Auld Kirk Cemetery, Almonte.
