Gertrude Lillian Lowry
After a lengthy illness of Alzheimers disease, Gertrude Lillian Lowry of RR 3 Almonte, died on March 27 in Almonte General Hospital, She was in her 68th year. Born in Almonte, she was the daughter of the late John Gilmour and his wife Christena Lawson. She attended school at SS no 5, Ramsay. In 1939 she married S. George Lowry and moved to Highway 29 to farm with her husband who survives her. She is also survived by a son Edwin (and his wife Marian) of Almonte and daughters Shirley Eastman of Toronto, Marilyn (Mrs Brian Kealy) and Lois (Mrs Dave Drummond) of Almonte and Irene (Mrs Mervyn Hilliard) of Carleton Place and 11 grandchildren. Also survived by her sister Mary (Mrs Arnold Leishman) of Almonte and brother Murray Gilmour of Dauphin, Manitoba. She was predeceased by brothers Wilfred, Allan and Charles. The funeral, which was largely attended, was held from the Gamble & Comba funeral home to the Almonte Presbyterian church on Tuesday, March 29, with Rev E. Smith officiating assisted by Rev R. Hill. Interment took place at Auld Kirk Cemetery. Pallbearers were Bert Lowry, Donald Lowry, Wes Knox, Thomson Clarke, Stewart Drummond and Boy Jamieson. Honourary pallbearers were Borden Hilliard, Ernie Giles, Gordon McCoy, Bill Stewart, Alex Bowes and Dennis Sirman.

Isobel Cochran Warren
One of Almonte's oldest residents died recently at Fairview Manor at 100 years of age.
Isobel Cochran Warren (nee Snedden) was born on the eighth line of Ramsay township in 1883, and died Dec 12, 1983 after living all her life in this area. Mrs Warren was the daughter of David and Ellen Snedden, both of Ramsay township. She was educated at the Bennie's Corners school and married William James Warren in 1911. The deceased was a member of the Zion Memorial United Church in Carleton Place. In the past, Mrs Warren represented the Canadian Legion ceremonies as a silver cross mother. A son and a daughter survive Mrs Warren. They are William H. Warren of Rexdale, Ontario and Isobel Robertson of Carleton Place. She is also survived by a sister, Mabel Syme of Almonte. Three children predeceased Mrs Warren, including a son, Sgt Observer James S. Warren who lost his life in the Second World War, and sons David George and John McCullouch. The long-time area resident was also predeceased by three sisters, Laura Snedden, Nell Naismith and Elizabeth Robertson, all of Almonte. She is survived by seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The funeral service was held at the Allan R. Barker Funeral Home in Carleton Place on Dec 14 at 2 pm with Rev Wesley Mitchell officiating. Mrs Warren was buried in the Auld Kirk Cemetery near Almonte and pallbearers were D Kennedy, T. Barnett, D Robertson, G. Greer, K. Robertson and A. Marshall.

Alex Stewart
Alex Stewart, well-known resident of Ramsay township, died on Tuesday, Dec 21, at the Almonte General Hospital following a short illness. He was 85. Born on the 12th Concession of Ramsay, April 1897, he was educated at the Appleton Public School. He had farmed on the homestead until the house was destroyed by fire in 1980. He moved to Almonte and in August 1982 entered the Almonte Nursing Home. He had been an employee of Ramsay township in his early life, and later became interested in the Ottawa Valley Hunt Club, spending many enjoyable days with activities of OVH as an honourary member. He was predeceased by his father, Donald Stewart, his mother, Charlotte Watson, his wife, Edith Bowland, his sister, Nursing Sister, C.M. Stewart CEF. Surviving are a daughter Anne and her husband Arthur Fulton three grandchildren, Douglas, Arlene and Donald, three sisters, Ethel Mrs H.W. Morlay) Snohomish, Wash, USA; Margaret, Carleton Place; Mabel, Toronto. Funeral was held at the Gamble & Comba Funeral Home, Church Street on Friday, Dec 24 at 11 am. Rev Ed Smith officiating. Spring interment, Auld Kirk Cemetery. Pallbearers were Laurence Kennedy, Edward Kennedy, Wilfred Neilson, Stuart McDougall, Alex Stewart, Clarence Lewis.

Alma Ethel Young?/b?
Alma Ethel Young of 87 Queen Street, Almonte died after a short illness at the Almonte General Hospital on March 7, 1983. She was 71. Born on January 14, 1912 at Birtle Municipality in Manitoba she was the daughter of William Robert Williams and Ethel Maude Smith. Educated in Manitoba, she married Robert Alexander Young on March 5, 1938 in Almonte. She had lived in Almonte for 47 years. She is survived by one brother, William Clifford Williams of Manitoba and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband and parents and one sister, Ketha Maude Dunn. The deceased was a telephone operator and homemaker. She was a past matron of the Eastern Star Chapter and held membership in the Almonte United Church and UCW, Almonte Senior Citizens, Appleton Women's Institute and North Lanark Historical Society. Funeral service was held at the Kerry Funeral Home on March 9 at 2 pm, the Rev Jack Lougheed officiating. The deceased will be buried at the Auld Kirk Cemetery in the spring.

K. Ivan Duncan, 56 Martin Street, Almonte, died on Nov 9 at the Almonte General Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was 74. Born at Warkworth, Ontario on Aug 3, 1909 he was the son of the late William and Ethel (Skinkle) Duncan. Educated at Warkworth, he married Irene James on Sept 19, 1944 in Almonte. A barber by profession, he lived in the area for 54 years and was a member of the Masons, Presbyterian Church (inactive elder), lawn bowling club and was a former school board trustee. He was predeceased by one brother, Claude and two sisters, Susie (Mrs Edgar McKeown) and Gertrude (Mrs Thomas Cobbledick). He is survived by his wife as well as daughter Muriel (Mrs Ralph Paul), Whitby, and two grandchildren, Robbie, 11 and Tracy,16. He is also survived by one brother Alton Duncan, Minden, Ont. The service was held from St John's Presbyterian Church, Almonte on No 12 at 11 am with Rev Edward Smith officiating. Interment in Auld Kirk Cemetery. Pallbearers at the service were Dr Peter James, Dr Walter James, John James, (nephews of the deceased), Hugh McClymont, David Walker and Elford Giles.

Anna M.J. Turner of Napanee passed away in the Lennox and Addington County General Hospital on Wednesday March 7, 1984. Born at Appleton, she was the youngest daughter of the late John Turner and his wife Agnes McIlraith. Left to mourn her loss are three brothers, Cecil of Carleton Place, Mac of Montreal, Ross of Guelph and one sister Marg (Mrs Leo Dunlap) of Crawford, Nebraska USA. She taught school at Kinburn, Appleton and Napanee before retiring in Napanee. She was a very active member of the United Church Women Society Session, also Clerk of Session at grace United Church as well as a member of the Historical Society and several other organizations in Napanee. A memorial service was held in the Wartman Funeral Home, Thursday evening at 7 pm and was conducted by the Queen of Sheiba Chapter (254) of the Rebekah Lodge. Funeral service was held on Friday, March 9, at 10:30 am in Grace United Church and was conducted by Rev Barry Saint Germain. Interment will be in the Auld Kirk Cemetery, Almonte, in the spring. The Session formed a Guard of Honour at the service. Friends from Appleton, Carleton Place, Ottawa, Montreal, Winnipeg, North Bay, Toronto, Cambridge, Kitchener and Guelph attended the service.

Janetta Simpson
Janetta Bounsley Simpson (Aird) of RR 3 Almonte died at Almonte General Hospital on May 10, after a three-week illness. She was 71. Born in Chatham on Oct 2, 1912, the daughter of the Rev William Aird and Alice Reed, she was married to William Earl Simpson, who predeceased her, at Almonte in 1938. She lived in the Almonte area for 55 years. She was educated in Maxville and Almonte and attended Teachers College in Ottawa and Nursing school in Hamilton. She is survived by sister Helen Aird of Brantford, daughter Kathryn McGregor and grandchildren David, Alice and Kevin McGregor of Stittsville. The funeral service was held at the Gamble & Comba Funeral Home in Almonte on May 12 at 1:30 pm. The service was conducted by Rev Roberts. Interment was at Auld Kirk Cemetery. The pallbearers were Robert Metcalfe, Vic Fortington, John McPhail, Joe Edmonds, Edwin Lowry and Gerald Sample.

Mary Jane McArton, a native of Ramsay township, died in Stirling on Sept 28. She was 98. Born in Ramsay township, the daughter Mr and Mrs William Doherty, she was married to John A. McArton, who predeceased her and was a resident of the Carleton Place area for 90 years. She was a member of St James Anglican Church in Carleton Place. She is survived by sons Arthur McArton of Toronto and Stuart McArton of Stirling and sister May Hutchinson of Vancouver and by eight grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. The funeral service was held at the Alan Barker Funeral Home in Carleton Place on Oct 1, 1984 at 11 am. The service was conducted by Rev Harvey Southcott. Interment was at Auld Kirk Cemetery, Almonte. The pallbearers were John McArton, William McArton, Alex Fleming, David Sager, Al Fernandez and Eric Jones. Martha Matilda Craig, a native of Clayton, died suddenly at Almonte General Hospital on Oct 14, 1984. She was 60. Born in Clayton on March 27, 1924, the daughter of Edward Munro and Lillian Hankin, she was married in Almonte to Robert Earl Craig, who survives her, on April 4, 1939. Mrs Craig, a housewife, was a lifelong resident of Almonte. She is survived by sons Allen Craig and Robert Craig Jr of Nova Scotia and Arnold Craig, Howard Craig and William Craig of Almonte and by daughters Faye Morrow of Carleton Place, Marilyn Reid of St Johns, Nfld, Beverly Guay of Almonte, Donna Coe and Susan Barr of Pakenam. She is also survived by brothers Eddie of Almonte, Archie of New Westminster, BC, Gordon of Toronto and Willard of Smiths Falls. A sister, Nellie Munro. predeceased her. The funeral service was held at Gamble & Comba Funral Home on Oct 16 at 10:30 am. The service was conducted by Rev Lougheed. Interment was at Auld Kirk Cemetery. Olive Naismith
Olive May Naismith, a Ramsay township native, died Feb 11, 1985 at Almonte General Hospital in her 91st year. Born and educated in Ramsay township, she was the daughter of William Paul and Christina Porterfield. She married Albert Naismith in 1919 and spent the remainder of her life on the family farm on the Ninth line of Ramsay township. Predeceased by her husband Albert and daughter Catherine, Mrs Naismith is survived by her sister Edna Rose of Almonte, sons Robert and William, Almonte and daughters Elsie May (Mrs William Toop), Ottawa and Betty (Mrs Lloyd Endersby) of Willowdale. Eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren also survive. The funeral was conducted from the Kerry Funeral Home by Rev Jack Lougheed of Almonte United Church. Mrs Naismith was a member of the church. Pallbearers were Garry Thom, Ian McBain, David Naismith, Harry Deugo, Richard Endersby and Bruce Rivington.

Margaret Naomi Stewart died suddenly in Carleton Place District Memorial Hospital Feb 14, 1985 following a short illness at age 89. She was born the daughter of Ramsay township residents Donald Stewart and Charlotte Watson March 15, 1985. Miss Stewart was educated at SS 11 Appleton School. She worked for the Imperial Bank of Canada, first in Montreal and later in Toronto, for over 40 years. On retirement she spent five years in England before returning to live in the Almonte and Carleton Place area in 1966. She was most recently a resident of 7 Bridge street, Carleton Place. Miss Stewart is survived by two sisters, Ethel Morley of Snohomish, Washington, and Mabel Stewart of Toronto and a niece, Anne (Mrs Arthur Fulton) of Almonte. Former Reeve John Cochran Died In TragicAccident On Farm
A farming accident had claimed the life of former Almonte reeve and prominent citizen John Cochran, at his RR 4 Almonte farm. He was 49. The accident resulting in Mr Cochran's death by asphyxiation happened some time between noon and 3:30 pm last Tuesday. He was operating a tractor alone on his farm on Lot 21, Conc 6 in Ramsay township. Perth OPP who were called to the scene about 4 pm, report that Mr Cochran was trapped under a large piece of frozen silage. The silage appeared to have fallen off the front end loader on the tractor. The tractor was in reverse and continued to back up until it hit a tree. The silage pinned Mr Cochran underneath it, pressing his chest and abdomen. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Coroner Dr Ralph Bach. Mr Cochran's long list of community involvement included being past chairman of the Algonquin College Board of Governors and past president of the Ontario Association of Rural Municipalities. In addition to being former Almonte reeve, he had been chairman of the Almonte General Hospital board and Almonte Lions Club president in previous years. Mr Cochran owned Mississippi Travel in Carleton Place. "He was one of my very close friends. He will be sadly missed by ourselves and our community," said Dr Frank Murphy of Almonte, a close friend.

Amy Steele
A native of Ramsay township, Miss Amy Louise Steele, a naturalist and nursing director, died March 16 at the Golden Plough Lodge in Cobourg, Ont.
Miss Steele was born on the eighth line in Ramsay township and is the daughter of the late John and Amy Steele.
She was one of Coburg's foremost naturalist and a charter member of the Business and Professional Women's Club of Cobourg.
Miss Steele was instrumental in the foundation of the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit, serving as its director of nursing from the date of its origin in 1945, until her retirement in 1965.
She was an honorary member of the Ontario Public Health Association as well as the Willow Beach Field Naturalists.
A good friend, Mrs Margaret March, considered her to be "The Informed Botanist.
She was one of the most informed botanist around. If you were absolutely stymied (about the name of a plant), she could tell you what it was as well at its Latin name."
Miss Steele is survived by sister, Beth Kirkland of Almonte, and brother Ernest of Toronto. Three brothers, Alex, James, and Arthur and a sister, May, predeceased her.
Funeral services were held Monday at the Milroy Funeral Home in Coburg.

Elizabeth (Betty) More died on Nov 14, following a lengthy illness at Almonte General Hospital, she had been since September 1984. Mrs More the former Elizabeth Logan was born on July 5, 1904 in Pakenham Township, the daughter of the late John Logan and Agnes McRae. She married the late Milton More on June 26, 1924 in Almonte. Mrs More is survived by sons Logan of Almonte; Bert of Arnprior; John of Ramsay Township; Laurie of Almonte and daughters Doreen of Ottawa (Mrs Russ Saunders); Ann of Kanata (Mrs Mike Bourgoin). A daughter Doreen died in infancy. She is also survived by a sister, Lois Stein of St Lambert, Quebec, 15 grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Mrs More is predeceased by three brothers: William of Renfrew, John of Lowville, NY; and Alec of Sarasota, Florida. She was a lifetime resident of Almonte and Ramsay Township. She was a member of the Almonte Presbyterian Church, and the Progressive Conservative Party. Funeral was held at the Almonte Presbyterian Church on Nov 16, 1985, Rev Edward Smith officiating. After resting at Gamble & Comba Funeral Home, Mrs More was buried at Auld Kirk Cemetery. Pallbearers were Kerry Saunders, Boyne Saunders, Don Levi, Earl More, Gordon Logan, and Douglas Logan. Honourary pallbearers were her sons Logan, Bert, John, Laurie and son-in-law Russ Saunders.

William Herbert Lowe
William Herbert Lowe died in the Arnprior Hospital on Friday, Jan 30. he was 71. Mr Lowe was born in Cedar Hill on Feb 12, 1915, the son of the late Mr and Mrs James Lowe (Annabelle Kirk). He served overseas with the Royal Canadian Artillery during World War II and on returning to civilian life took up farming in Cedar Hill. He and his wife, Isobel Slater (Neron) whom he married on Oct 18, 1975, had recently moved from Cedar Hill to Arnprior. Besides his wife, Mr Lowe is survived by three stepchildren Richard Slater, Arnprior; Mrs E. Ward, For Wayne, Indiana and Mrs Art King, Pefferlaw, Ontario. he is also survived by five brothers and sisters, Mrs Mabel Barr, Almonte; Arthur, Cedar Hill; Russell, Pakenham; Mrs Amy Wagner, Smiths Falls and Mrs Peggy Steen, Almonte. Also surviving are six nephews and nieces. Pastor Roberts officiated at the funeral service which was held Monday, Feb 2, in Calvary Baptist Church, Arnprior. Acting as pallbearers were George Dunfield, Eddie Smith, John Fulton, Alfie Slater, Ellwood McRae and Archie Cameron. Interment will be in the Auld Kirk Cemetery, Almonte, in the Spring.

John Bill Barr
Almonte resident William John (Bill) Barr died in Almonte General Hospital Jan 5th, 1987 at age 73. Mr Barr was born in Renfrew Aug 11, 1913, the son of the late Ernest and Mahalla (nee Spinks) Barr. He is survived by his wife Mabel Kirk Lowe, a brother Earl of Almonte and a sister Mary (Mrs Bert Guthrie) of Hull, Quebec. He was predeceased by a brother Clarence and sisters Myrtle (Mrs Stewart Bandy) and Isabel (Mrs Robert Barnes). Mr Barr and his wife were married in Braeside June 19, 1946. He had been employed a the Almonte flour mill and also served in the Royal Canadian Ordinance Corps during World War II. He was a resident of 27 Union Street South. Rev Thomas Lowry of Pakenham conducted the funeral at the Kerry Funeral Home Jan 7 before burial at Auld Kirk Cemetery, Almonte. The pallbearers were Bill Lowe, Russ Lowe, Don Lowe, Doug barr, Bruce Barr, and Guy Yuill.

Maria (Nellie) Harper
Maria Helena (Nellie) Harper formerly of Almonte and Ottawa, died at Fergus, Ont on Jan 5th, 1987. She was in her 102nd year. Born on Nov 21st, 1885 at Smiths Falls, Ont, She was the daughter of the late George Ferguson and Kezia Leach. She was educated at North Gower, Kemptville and Ottawa Ladies College, She married Joseph Harper on June 14th, 1911. He predeceases her. Mrs Harper lived in Almonte from 1955 to 1972 and in Ottawa from 1911 to 1955. She was active at Christ Church Cathedral. Ottawa, for many years. She is survived by son John J. Harper of Picton, Ont, daughters Betty Guselle of North Augusta, Noreen MacDonald of Cambridge and sister Madeline Ferguson of Toronto. Funeral service was held at the Gamble and Comba Funeral Home in Almonte on Jan 8th at 2 pm, the Rev Jack Truman officiating. Burial will be at the Auld Kirk Cemetery in the Spring.

Leila Alfreda Snedden
Leila Alfreda Snedden (Campbell) Snedden died suddenly in Almonte Saturday, August 22, 1987 at 78 years of age. She was born March 25, 1909 in the family homestead overlooking White Lake in McNabb Township, Renfrew County, to Earl Campbell and Elizabeth Stewart. She attended the local one-room school, Arnprior High School and Normal School in Ottawa. She taught at several schools in Ramsay Township until she married William Alex Snedden Sept 5, 1934 and moved to his family farm near Blakeney. Besides raising four children and caring for her husband's mother and aunt, she was a full partner in the operation of Mississippi Holsteins. Leila returned to teaching in 1954 when her youngest child started school. Her pupils at Cedar Hill remember her being there for many years until the new school in Pakenham was built. She retired from teaching in 1970. Her husband predeceased her in 1978, but Leila continued to take an active part in the community in such organizations as the Ramsay Women's Institute, Pakenham United Church Women, Pakenham Senior Citizens Club, Pakenham Horticultural Society, North Lanark Historical Society, and teachers' group, She was also a volunteer at Fairview Manor. Her surviving family members include son Earle and his wife Marilyn Robertson, daughter Kay and her husband Graham Hudson, son Sandy and his wife Marion Sadler, daughter Beth and her husband Brian Keating and 14 grandchildren. Her brother R.J. Campbell and sisters Eileen (Mrs Donald Scott) and Margaret (Mrs Sam Cunningham), all of the same White Lake area, mourn her passing. Rev Tom Lowry conducted the funeral from the Kerry Funeral Home in Almonte with burial at Auld Kirk Cemetery. The pallbearers were grandchildren Bruce and Brian Hudson and Robert, Ken, Murray and Ron Snedden.
