DIED
At Ramsay, on Friday, the 11 April, Walter, only son of Mr. Walter Gardiner aged 4 months.
Even in the bud the lovely flower,
was nipt and did decay;
The storm of life began to rage,
It quickly shrunk away.
But he's not lost, O, no! my friends
Yours treasury safely stored;
Where you need fear no future foe,
Forever with the Lord.

Very Sudden Death
Last Monday Mr. John Lang, whose farm adjoins Almonte, was working about his home, in better health than usual, as he had been suffering for a time from rheumatism and a slight trouble of the heart, and when Mrs Lang went to bed at ten o'clock that night she left him reading beside the stove, as he intended removing the ashes before retiring. Mrs Lang awoke between two and three next morning, and finding that her husband was not abed, divined that something was wrong. Hurrying down, she found Mr. Lang in a kneeling position beside the stove ? dead! He had been fixing the stove and before his task was competed the hand to death was upon him. Heart disease was doubtless the cause. The news was a terrible shock to the household, and scarcely less so to many in town, who ha the pleasure of meeting Mr Lang here the previous Friday, about as genial as ever, though bearing traces of his sickness. Deceased was one of Ramsay's best known and most respected farmers, and his death is regretted by all who knew him. An upright, honourable citizen, a kind friend and neighbour, and a model in his domestic relationships, has gone to his rest, and leaves a home in the deepest sorrow; but the household does not sorrow as those who are without hope ? they have the blessed assurance that they well meet again under brighter skies. Sixty-five years ago Mr. Lang was born on the farm in which he died, his father being the late Arthur Lang, who came from Scotland to these parts in 1821, with the first settlers. Over forty years ago he married Jane Gilmour, daughter of the late James Gilmour, who was also one of the pioneer settlers. Of their children four survive, viz.: Henry and Alvina at home; Mrs Throop (Jessie), of Ottawa; Albert A., who is studying medicine at McGill College, Montreal. To add to the misfortunes of the family, Mrs Lang has been ill of late with pleurisy, and her son Albert is in an hospital at Montreal very seriously ill with typhoid. In their time of trouble Mrs Lang and family have the sincere sympathy of the whole community. Mr Lang was a charter member of Mississippi Lodge No 147 A.F. & A.M., Almonte, and the members of that lodge turned out in a body to attend the funeral which took place this (Thursday) afternoon, to the eighth line cemetery and was very largely attended. Rev A.S. Grant, B.D., pastor of St. Andrew's congregation (of which deceased was a member), was the officiating clergyman.

Mrs Buchanan Paterson Dead
About fours years ago, Mrs Buchanan Paterson, of Ramsay, was attacked with la grippe, from which she never fully recovered, although she was able to be around most of the time. Two weeks ago she went to visit her daughter, Mrs Jas Arthur, near Rosebank, and on Sunday last was taken seriously ill, but lingered on till Wednesday, when she quietly dropped into that sleep from which there is no awaking. The deceased was a daughter of the late James Stewart, of Ramsay, and sister to Mr. Robt. Stewart, of the seventh line, and was born in Ramsay, where she spent her whole life. She was married to Mr Buchanan Paterson, who died about fifteen years ago, the union being blessed with four children ? one son and three daughters ? all of whom are living. The deceased was of a quiet disposition, but will be remembered by many for her kindness of heart and her readiness to aid those who were in trouble of any kind.

Mr William McEwen
The death of Mr Wm McEwen of Ramsay on Sunday severed one of the very few links which now connected the early settlement of this part of Canada with the past. Not only does his long life emphasize this connection, but the fact that he was the first white child born in the township, and that he first saw the light beneath the covering of a brush tent hastily erected, tends to accentuate it. The father died when he was young and being the eldest of the family he had to assume a large share of the burden of life and was prevented from taking advantage of even the meagre educational advantages of that time, but he was a great reader and everything from which he could gain knowledge was devoured with avidity in his spare moments. He was twenty years a member of the Ramsay library, and many of the best books therein helped him to expand his mind. About six years ago his eyes gave out and he became totally blind, a direct result of the strain caused by reading. In 1851 he was married to Miss Marion Sutherland, a sister of the late Angus Sutherland, and to them ten children were born. Two died in infancy and the eldest, Thomas, in manhood. Those still living are Mrs (Rev) Whitelaw, Mrs J. Sutherland, Stafford; Mrs Thos Bailey in Quebec, Mrs Jas Bailey in Alberta, Robert in the States, William at home, and Mary in town. Mrs McEwen died about two-and-a-half years ago. The funeral took place on Tuesday to the eighth line cemetery. Mrs Jas Black and Mr Robert McLean of Ramsay are probably the only ones left of those who were of Mr McEwen's age.

Went Down in Hunland
The following extract is from a letter received by Dr Kirkland from Capt W.R. Greene, 57th Squadron, Royal Air Force, regarding what happened to his son, James Kirkland: "About Kirkland and Riley, what happened was this: They were on a bomb raid which I was leading. The weather was very bad, and we had been followed around by Pfaiz scouts. Just as we got to the objective and had dropped our bombs a thunder storm burst right on top of us. The rain which followed absolutely blinded every one of us, with the result that the formation got split up. I eventually collected a few of them, and having seen them across the lines, I waited for about ten or fifteen minutes; but seeing nothing I came home to find that Kirkland had not arrived. Later on we got a report through from the line that he had been seen going down over Hunland with the Huns following. Probably his engine was hit, or something like that. We are extremely sorry as he was such a topping fellow and awfully stout, and Riley no less so." Riley, referred to above, was Jimmy Kirkland's observer, and "Pfaiz Scouts" are one type of German war planes.

Link With Early Settlers Is Gone
Mrs Hugh Metcalfe,
Born Almost a Century Ago in Ramsay Township.
One of the few remaining link with the early days of settlement in Ramsay was broken last week by the death of Mrs Hugh Metcalfe, at the age of almost ninety-seven. The funeral took place to the Presbyterian cemetery on Thursday, and was very largely attended. The late Mrs Metcalfe's maiden name was Jean McLean. She was the youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs Lachlan McLean, who settled in Ramsay in October of 1821, having come from the Mull of Cantire in Scotland. They travelled by way of the St. Lawrence to Prescott, across the country to the Rideau river,,and leaving it at Oliver's Ferry, came through Perth to Lanark village. At Lanark their daughter Jean a girl of ten years of age, died and hers was only the second interment in Lanark cemetery. Later on the same summer, Mr and Mrs McLean journeyed on, and settled on Lot No 18 on the 7th con of Ramsay. Two years later Mrs Hugh Metcalfe was born, and her parents named her Jean. Lachlan McLean was a veteran of the early days of the Napoleonic wars and saw service from 1779 to 1802 with the famous Cameron Highlanders. His discharge paper is dated 1802, and is now in the possession of his grandson, Lachlan McLean, of Beckwith. The late Lachlan McLean with his wife spoke Gaelic. He became very well known as the Ramsay Bard and had a distinct poetic talent. With the McLeans when they arrived in this district where the Blacks, Moores and Pauls, and a host of Scotch settlers, some of whom travelled on the same ship across the Atlantic. The late Mrs Metcalfe was the mother of a large family. They were: Christina, who is now Mrs Nicholson, of Bowesmont, Dakota; James, deceased; Lachlan, of Athabasca; Robert of Pakenham; Annie Mrs Eccles, of Medicine Hat; Alexander, of Ramsay; Hugh, of Comba, Dak; Jean, Mrs Jas Watt, of Lanark; Henry, deceased; William, of Dunseath, Dak.; John, on the homestead, and Dr. A.A. Metcalfe, of Almonte. The funeral took place from the residence of her daughter-in-law, Mrs Henry Metcalfe, of Almonte, the services being conducted by Rev. S. Gorley Brown.

Great Tribute Paid Ramsay Farmer At His Funeral Sunday Afternoon
This part of Lanark County lost one of its most popular and successful citizens on Friday, May 9th, in the death of Albert George Naismith who died in the Rosamond Memorial Hospital, in his 58th year, after a short illness. Mr Naismith was born on the homestead, Ninth Line of Ramsay, in sight of Almonte, a son of the late Peter Naismith and his wife, Catherine Gilmour. A short time after his father's death, he acquired the farm which is a very good one and which he continued to improve in every day during his all too short lifetime. Thirty-two years ago he married Olive May Paul who survives together with two sons and two daughters, namely, Robert of Ramsay, William at home; Mrs Wm Toop (Elsie) of Ottawa and Mrs William Endersby (Betty) of Toronto. In his own immediate family there are eight ? James of Vermillion, Alberta; Welland of Esparato, Calf.; John of Calgary; Miss Margaret at home. Deceased ? Peter, Lawrence (Tobe) Jessie (Mrs Wm Steele) and Jean. Mr Naismith's death came as a great shock and sorrow to a wide circle of friends. Whether he felt well during the winter no one knows outside of his immediate family because he wasn't a complainer. He was the jolly, jaunty type of man whom everyone likes to meet, especially those who felt down a little themselves. He was always cheerful, well informed and a good conversationalist. He knew his business as a dairy farmer, specializing in Ayshires, and it was a pleasure to hear him talk on the subject of agriculture in which he was most interested. Some years ago, in addition to running his farm with which the two boys were associated, "Ab" decided to take on the district agency for the Massey-Harris Co. His warehouse was next the Gazette office and the staff of this newspaper never had a better of more congenial neighbour. He was eminently successful in his work as an agent but his heart was in the farm. he had it in mind to turn the agency over the elder boy an when he declared he would rather farm Albert gave up the sales business with no regret at all. He took little active interest in public or semi public affairs. His heart was at home because he was a great family man. He loved to talk with the boys and girls of the immediate circle and he welcomed the friends who passed the gate and traversed the one lane up to his home. He was a director of North Lanark Agricultural Society for a few years but outside of that he attended strictly to his own affairs. He was Conservative in politics. The funeral of the late Mr Naismith, held last Sunday afternoon was one of the largest ever seen in Lanark County. When the head of the cortege reached the turn to the Auld Kirk Cemetery, at MacDonald's service station, the tail of the sad procession was still coming out his gate about two miles distant. Services were conducted at the home and graveside by Rev H.C. Wolfraim, pastor of the Almonte United Church. Pallbearers were Robt Toshack, Jas Steele, Peter Syme, Melville Paul, Clifford Rivington and Charles Black, the latter from Carleton Place. As might be expected, there was a profusion of floral offerings from organizations and individuals. It is no exaggeration to say that the death of Albert Naismith at a comparatively early age is one of those sad things that mortals have to contend with in this strange life. He was full of energy, cheerfulness and good-fellowship and had attained a position in his career where he could sit back and rest on the oars while the boys carried on. One of them was on a farm on his own a short distance away and the other was at home. But this rest after toll was not to be. Mr Naismith will be sorely missed by all who knew him. There were many at the funeral from adjacent towns and Ottawa, and Mr and Mrs Sam McKee and son, Don Don McKee and Mrs Porterfield from Toronto.

"Service Medal" "Honor Arthur L. Dale" "It was a proud day for Arthur L.C. Dale, former lockmaster at Hog's Back, when he recei ved a medal from the King this morning for his 38 years service on the Rideau Canal. It came as rather a surprise to Mr. Dale, too, who considered that his canal days were officially over. But as A. R. Whittier, superintendent engineer of the Rideau Canal explained , "These things take time." Shortly after 67 year-old Mr. Dale's retirement last September, the Department of Transp or recommended him for the Imperial Service Medal. Permission was duly granted by the King and Mr. Whittier made the presentation at the locks this morning. Onlookers at the presentation included Mrs. Dale, members of the Dale family, and Leslie Watt, the new lockmaster at Hog's Back. Never Tardy during Mr. Dale's entire tenure as an employee of the Rideau Canal he has never been late for work his records shows. That includes the time he worked as lockman at Hartwell Locks .
He started there in 1912 employed then by the old Department of Railways and Canals. In 1924 he went back to Hog's Back as lockmaster. "I'm not sorry that my job is finished now," he told newsmen this morning. But he admitted that he came back to the locks "every day". He lives less than a mile away on the Brockfield Road so the urge to "keep an eye on things" is easy to gratify. But far be it from Mr. Dale to interfere with Lockmaster Watt. He expressed every confidence in Mr. Watt's ability to tend the locks, but he likes to go back and recapture some of the old memories lingering around the grounds. A canal is like a highway and a lockmaster sees a good deal of life passing by.
Mr. Dale was born on a Shawville farm and worked there for his father a few years before moving to Cobalt where he worked in the mines. Later he moved to the mines at Porcupine and Haileybury before beginning his canal career.
