2901 | ?b?John William Kidd ?/b?December 19th, 1932 - November 4th, 2022 With profound sadness, we announce the passing of John William Kidd, loving husband for 64 years of Leona (Holley) and devoted father to Richard (late Roxanne), Holley (Rodger Gardiner), Beth, and Edward (Hanna). A few weeks shy of his 90th birthday, John died on a sunny autumn day surrounded by his family in the place he was born - on the family farm in The Derry, Beckwith Township. Predeceased by his parents, William Livingstone Kidd and Jeanette (Leach), John is survived by his sister Dorothy Lewis and ten grandchildren: Livingstone, Melissa (Sean), and Grant (Loralie); Casey (Beverley) and Ainsley (Kyle); Katie and Jillian; Jaden, Mia and Ashton. John was also the loving great-grandfather to Duncan, Finley, Keegan, Vivien, Gordon and Angus. John attended Carleton Place High School where he was a member of the 1948 E.O.S.S.A. championship football team. John took over the family farm continuing in the footsteps of his father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Married in 1958, John and Leona raised their family on the Kidd farm and continued the generational spirit of community leadership and service. John was elected to Beckwith Township Council in the 1960's serving for 10 years. He was an original member of the Beckwith volunteer fire department starting in 1964. A lifelong historian, his knowledge and historic memory of local lore and lineage were legendary. He regularly hosted genealogists searching for clues to their Lanark County family tree and consulted by historians seeking confirmation of their research. Friends may visit the family at the Alan R. 2902 | ?b?Johnson Eric Duncan,?/b? owner and operator of one of the first Rowatt-area farms, died recently after a lengthy illness. He was 69. The 800-acre Duncan family farm south of Regina was homesteaded in 1891 by his father, John Duncan. Johnson Duncan was born and educated in Regina and attended Central Collegiate where he was a member of the naval reserve. He was secretary-treasurer of the Regina rural telephone system until its incorporation Into the Saskatchewan Telecommunications system. A member of Sherwood United Church, he was an avid curler and fisherman. He is survived by his wife, Edna of Rowatt; three sons, John and Kenneth of Rowatt and Howard of North Battleford; two daughters, Barbara Werner and Kathy Vanos of Regina; two brothers, a sister and several grandchildren. One of Almonte's eldest residents, Mrs. Mary Catherine Munro Johnson, passed away at the Almonte General Hospital early Sunday morning. August the 2nd, 1970. Born in Lanark Township January the 3rd, 1872, she was a daughter of Daniel Monro and his wife, Margaret McMunn. She was the last surviving of a family of 12. She was married to Mr. Adam Johnson on March the 13th, 1894. Mr. Johnson predeceased his wife in 1945, and a son Dr. Willard E. Johnson, died at an early age in 1933. Surviving are three daughters, Gertrude (Mrs. William Colborne) , Miss Margaret Johnson of Almonte and Isabel (Mrs. R. G. Whitelaw of London, Ontario. Also, four grandchildren and six great grandchildren. The funeral service was held at the Comba Funeral Home, Church Street, on Tuesday August the 4th, at 2:00 p.m. and was conducted by Rev. Passed away peacefully on Monday, January 30, 2012 at Trinity Village, Kitchener, with the comfort of her daughter Barb and her grand-daughters Amanda and Rhonda. Margaret "Peggy" Johnston, 81 years of age, beloved wife of the late Ken Johnston (2004) and formerly the late Albert "Bud" Snyder (1967). (Michael) Lutzker of Carlsbad, CA, Susan E. (Robbie) Aguilar of Phoenix and Jennifer K. (Tim) Butler of Hollywood, CA; her grandson, Alexander Socrates Aguilar of Phoenix, as well as many extended family members and loving friends. A resident of Tucson for 26 years, Karen was born in Palo Alto, CA July 6, 1941, the daughter of Kathleen Kidd Kerr and Norman Stanley Kerr. Karen grew up in San Francisco and spent her teen years in Hawaii and Puerto Rico. She graduated from Robinson High School in Santurce, Puerto Rico, in 1959. In the early 1960's she attended the School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, where she was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority and where she met her husband, Michael. Karen and Michael started their family in New York City and made homes in Syracuse, NY, Gettysburg, PA and Harrisburg, PA, before settling in Tucson in 1977. Karen was an active member of both The League of Women Voters and The Junior League in Harrisburg, PA. For the last 15 years Karen worked in the Accounting Department of the Tucson Association of Realtors. A Memorial Service will not be held. The bride is the daughter of Mr, and Mr John Fraser, and the groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs, Forrest Putnam, all of Gibbons. For her wedding the bride, given In marriage by her father, wore the summer uniform of the RCAF complemented with a corsage of yellow roses. Miss Patricia Marion Fraser was her sister's only attendant, wearing a turquoise blue wool frock with a pink hat and white accessories. Pink carnations formed her corsage. Mr. Roy Putnam, brother of the groom, was best man. Mrs. Emily Oliver played the wedding music. Tom was predeceased by his lovina wife Audrey and his wonderful nrandsnn Shawn. Dad will be lovingly remembered by children, Loni, Dana (Bob) Tom, Sharon (Lou), Debbie and Joanne (Mark); grandchildren, Tracy, Debbie-Jo (Dale), Joey, Jo-ana (Ray), Dustin (Courtney); great- grandchildren Thomas, Connor, Tanner, Colby, Kaleb, Hayden and Allie, and sister Laverne Richardson (Bob). Dad was born in North Vancouver and served in the Canadian Navy on the HMCS Esquimau until April 1 6, 1 945 when it was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat off the coast of Newfoundland. He was one of the lucky survivors returning home to marry, start a family and a 30 year career in the grain elevator industry. Born and raised in Kansas, he was a Veteran of the United States Air Force and graduated from Kansas State University, where he met his wife of 45 years, Diana. He was retired from SC Johnson & Sons but lived for his family ? his wife, children, grandchildren, and more. Though often described as kind, patient, generous, ornery and funny, he was perhaps best known for his uncomplaining and upbeat spirit. He was an avid sports fan from professional sports to his granddaughters' soccer games. He was most at home when he was spending time with his family at their Eureka Lake cabin, where he taught innumerable children and adults how to waterski. He was preceded in death by his parents, Norma and Lyle Kidd. He is survived by his wife, Diana; daughter, Laura (David) Mayans; son, Brett (Melody) Kidd; brother, Roger (Paula) Kidd; sister, Cindy (Gary) Soehner; granddaughters, Gabriella Mayans, Chloey and Faye Kidd; numerous nieces and nephews. John Steele the elder was a boy six years old when he came with his parents from Lanarkshire, Scotland. On their arrival in Ramsay the family erected their tent on the site of the present Almonte Town Hall. The late John Steele was married in 1891, to Miss Amy Coulter, of Almonte, and to them were born seven children. Arthur, of Lawrencetown, Nova Scotia; Lou of Woodsfield, Ohio; James, on the homestead; Beth, Mrs Hal Kirkland of Montreal, and Ernest, of Grandmere, Que., survive along with Mrs Steele. Mary and Alexander are deceased. Mr Steele was one of the most progressive of the Ramsay farmers. He saw early the advantages of tile draining and was the first to adopt this method. He was a strong advocate of the taking over of the Rosebank power and developing it for the use of the district. For a time he was secretary-treasurer of the Bennies Corners School. and for a number of years he was a director of the North Lanark Agricultural Society. The funeral service on Monday was conducted by Mr A.M. Wootten, of Blakeney United Church, and the pallbearers were Messrs Alex Cochran, Albert Naismith, Robert Barker, John Fulton, Wm Phillips and John Snedden. The remains were interred in the Auld Kirk Cemetery. The were many floral tributes and to the long cortege were many friends, from Ottawa, Pembroke, Arnprior and Carleton Place. Some of the organizations he served included Lanark Mutual Insurance Company, Lanark County Plowmen's' Association, Almonte General Hospital Board, North Lanark Agricultural Society, North Lanark Historical Society, as a Ramsay Township Councillor, Deputy Reeve and Reeve and on Mississippi Mills Council for a combination of 29 years. Jim was a quiet, compassionate gentleman, willing to lend a hand or an ear to anyone. His smile, quick wit and humour brightened the days of many. Faith, patience and an appreciation of life gave him grace and strength every day. A special thank you to the Dialysis Unit at the Renfrew Victoria Hospital and the staff of the Almonte Fairview Manor for their kind and compassionate care. Friends may call at the C.R. Gamble Funeral Home at 127 Church St, Almonte on Wednesday, August 16th from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm. Funeral service will be held in the Community Presbyterian Church at 111 Church Street, Almonte on Thursday, August 17th at 1 pm. Interment with his brothers and parents at the Auld Kirk Cemetery, Almonte to follow.
