3088 | ?b?Obit. - James Duncan?/b? One of the very few remaining links between the past generation and the present was removed this (Thursday) morning when Mr. James Duncan was called away from the surroundings in which he had spent so long a life. The late Mr. Duncan was born on the homestead in Ramsay, now occupied by his youngest son, Mr Ed Duncan, His whole life was spent there until a little over five years ago, when he removed to Almonte, to spend with Mrs. Duncan in the declining years of their lives in the comfortable home he had provided. On March 25, 1854, he was married to Elizabeth Lockhart, who was born in Scotland and came to Canada with her parents when nine years of age. To Mr. and Mrs. Duncan eleven children were born; all of whom are still living. The sons are Robert at Pilot Mound; William, James, John and Albert at Regina; Hugh at Strathcona; Alexander Sidney on the McFarlene farm and Ed on the homestead; the daughters are Maggie (Mrs. Butchart) and Lizzie (Mrs. Dr. Paterson) in Almonte, and Aggie (Mrs. Holden) at Pilot Butte, Man. The first break in the family circle occurred four years ago when Mrs. Duncan passed away, and now Mr. Duncan makes the second. Mr. Duncan was of a retiring disposition and never sought public office of any kind, preferring the quiet of his own home. He was of a robust constitution, and even until not long ago he thought little of a tramp out to the farm and spending the day busily working about because he loved to work. The funeral has been delayed until Sunday afternoon to enable members of the family at a distance to attend. It will take place at 3 o'clock to the eighth line cemetery. ?b?Mr. Duncan's Funeral?/b? The funeral of the late James Duncan took place from his home on Elgin street to the the Eighth Line Cemetery on Sunday afternoon, and was attended by a large concourse of people both from the town and township in which his long life had been spent. Two of his sons, James of Regina, and robert from Pilot mound, were among the cheif mourners. The pallbearers were three who were near neighbours of Mr. Duncan when he was on the farm - Messrs John Neilson, Graham Forgie and Donald Stewart, and three of his nearby town neighbours - Messrs HH Cole, S Young and John McFarlane. The funeral services were conducted by Rev C. H. Daly, of St. John's church, of which Mr. Duncan had been a member for many years. Among the floral tributes was a beautiful wreath from the family. | Duncan, James (I2328)

3091 | ?b?Obituary Beverly Ann Madden (n. Brydges) December 1, 1938- January 7, 2022?/b? It is with immense sorrow that we announce the passing of an incredible wife, mother, sister, Nan and Great-Nan. Beverly Ann Madden (n. Brydges) passed away with dignity and grace at her home on Golden Line Road, Almonte. Predeceased by her beloved husband of 54 years Joseph "Joe" John Madden, and by her son Jeffrey Joseph Madden; survived by her daughter and best friend JoAnn Donaldson (Jack). Cherished Nan to Chris (Jessica) and Jonathan (Anna Laurie), and very special Great Nan to Joseph "Joey" Christopher and Austin Timothy Donaldson, and Breeda Beverly Donaldson. Born in Almonte to Orville Charles Brydges of Almonte and Gladys May (n. Lancaster) of Carleton Place, Beverly was the eldest of 10 children. She is survived by siblings Clarence (Marian); Blair (Lynda); Harold (Lucille); Bruce (Willie); Joan Scott (Kevin); Roy (Debbie); Stephen (Mary Ann); Heather Denvir (Basil) and Darrell. She was a medical secretary in Almonte for 52 years: to Dr. Rolf Bach for 35 years, until his retirement, to Dr. Cecil Rytwinski and to Dr. Heather Abramenko for 20 years. Her dedication to her profession was outpaced only by her devotion to her family. Beverly was proud to be a devoted farmer's wife and worked side by side with Joe to make the Madden homestead "Tara Hill Farm" a successful farm and welcoming place for family and friends alike. First her children and then her grandchildren became part of the many adventures she planned; be it taking the RV on the road, traveling to far off destinations, or enjoying camping just down the highway in the Ottawa Valley. Wherever they went, Bev and Joe could always make fast friends, enjoy good music of all kinds and dance the night away - always sharing the last dance with each other. Beverly shared her love of downhill skiing, snowmobiling, boating and water skiing with so many friends and family over the years - snowmobiling with her great-grandsons was undoubtedly one of her happiest moments. She planned extended family gatherings for all occasions; birthdays, anniversaries, retirements, showers, and holidays - and they always featured a game, recitation, or skit making memories and keeping us smiling. With her seemingly unending supply of energy, Beverly found time amidst all of the farm, family and work activities to volunteer with St. Paul's Anglican Church. She remained an active member of the Altar Guild until just a couple of years ago, and always made time to share her excellent cooking and baking skills in support of the Harvest Supper, Tourtiere and Bake Sales. To know Bev was to know what mattered most in life; family, friends and community. She was so proud of the years spent developing Tara Hill Farm with Joe and creating a home where all were welcomed with open arms and a fantastic meal. In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Paul's Anglican Church Cemetery Fund are appreciated. office@stpaulsalmonte.ca "Be happy, tonight I go with the faith and hope that my loved ones' spirits will all be around me. Live, laugh and love each other, always." | Brydges, Beverly Ann "Bev" (I12224)

3097 | ?b?Obituary - Honourable George Bryson 1813-1900 ?/b? Ottawa Citizen - January 15, 1900 - Hon. Geo. Bryson Dead - One of the Most Prominent of Ottawa Valley Pioneers Passes Away One of the most successful and widely known pioneers of the Ottawa valley has passed away at Fort Coulonge on Saturday in the person of Hon. George Bryson. Deceased was a familiar figure in political life, while his extensive interests in the lumbering industry has made the family name a familiar one. Hon. George Bryson was born in Paisley, Scotland in 1813 and came to Canada in 1821. His early years were spent in Ramsay, Lanark County, from which place he removed to Pontiac County, Quebec, where he resided up to the time of his death. Deceased possessed to a marked degree many of those commendable characteristics that distinguish the Scotchman the world over. He was frugal, industrious, shrewd and cautious, and, while engaged in farming operations on first settling in the Pontiac, he early recognized that the wealth of forest land furnished a better field for his energy, and accordingly he turned his attention to the lumber industry. His foresight and faith were amply repaid, and so successful were his operations, that he soon became recognized as one of the leading operators in the Ottawa district. The late Mr. Bryson worked his limits for square timber principally, and old lumbermen still refer to the time, twenty years ago, when twelve and fifteen immense rafts were cut off the Bryson limits and floated down to Quebec in the one season for export to Great Britain. In all his lumbering and other business ventures, the late Mr. Bryson's word was recognized as being equally as good as his bond, and in no instance was he known to take unfair advantage of another to further his own ends. His lumbering operations were carried on along the Coulonge and Black Rivers and later along the Kippewa also. Mr. Bryson did much to develop these districts, to which end he also promoted the Pontiac and Pacific junction railway. The Town of Bryson, formerly known as Havelock, was renamed in honor of the Bryson family. Deceased was also associated with other leading lumbermen in the formation of the Upper Ottawa Improvement Company, which did much to facilitate lumbering operations in the district watered by the Ottawa, Coulonge and other streams. Mr. Bryson was also one of the founders of the Capital's successful monetary institutions, the Bank of Ottawa. He was a director of the bank, and regularly attended the meetings til recently. Deceased also took an active interest in municipal matters and for several years he held the office of mayor of Mansfield. He was also warden of Pontiac county for four consecutive terms. In political life he was as successful and prominent as he was in business life. He was a moderate Conservative, and from the year 1867 to the year 1887, represented Pontiac in the Quebec legislature. In the latter year he retired in favor of his son, George, who at present represents the constituency. Deceased had a family of four, three sons and a daughter. His sons were the late John W. Bryson, who represented Pontiac in the Dominion house from 1887 to the year of his death, 1896, George Bryson, representative of Pontiac in the Quebec legislature and James Bryson, a well-known and successful farmer of Bryson. Mrs. Albert Boulter of New York is the only daughter of the deceased. The family is also widely connected about Ottawa, where the sons have taken up extensive business interests, the inception of which was the work of the shrewd, conscientious and industrious Scotchman just deceased. The funeral will be held tomorrow morning, and to give the many Ottawa and other friends of the family an opportunity of attending the obsequies of the deceased, a special train will be run leaving Aylmer at 8 am. | Bryson, Hon George Sr. (I8404)

3098 | ?b?Obituary - John Bryson?/b? Ottawa Journal - January 20, 1896 - Death of John Bryson - The Conservative M.P. For Pontiac Passes Away - But Forty-seven Years of Age - A Representative of the County Since 1882 - Sudden Attack of Disease on a Recent Lumbering Trip with Mr. Alexander Fraser John Bryson, Conservative M.P. for Pontiac county, died at Fort Coulonge yesterday morning. The news was received in Ottawa with surprise and by many with deep regret. Few public men in the Ottawa Valley were better or more favorably known than the late Mr. Bryson. His death was very sudden, so sudden indeed that many friends did not know of his illness previous to the announcement of his death. A week ago last Tuesday, accompanied by Mr. Fraser of this city, Mr. Bryson left on an inspection of his lumber business on the Coulonge river. Mr. Fraser speaking to The Journal this morning regarding the trip, stated that Mr. Bryson was in good health when they started. The distance to the limits was ninety miles from the mouth of the Coulonge river. After three days drive they reached the shanties. On Friday they went out and inspected the logs that had been cut, Mr. Bryson feeling in the best of spirits. That evening Mr. Bryson took ill in the shanty. Saturday he was no better and Sunday he was worse. Fearing that Mr. Bryson was in the first stages of typhoid fever or some serious disease, Mr. Fraser says he urged him to start for home. Fixing Mr. Bryson up comfortably in a sleigh, the homeward journey was begun Tuesday morning. They reached Mr. Bryson's home at Fort Coulonge on Wednesday afternoon, at five o'clock. Medical attendance was at once procured. Dr. Klock, who was the medical attendant, saw that Mr. Bryson's illness was chronic and that death could not be averted, suffering as he was from heart-failure. Mr. Bryson lingered on until early yesterday morning when he expired. Mr. Bryson was born Nov. 30, 1849, the second son of Hon. George Bryson. He went into the lumbering and farming business and did well, but always showed a liking for public work. He became Mayor of Mansfield in 1882, and in the same year was elected to parliament in the Conservative interest. The vote was Bryson, 1,047, N. McCuaig, Liberal, 931, and W. Somerville, Independent, 293. At the general election of 1887, he was again successful, defeating Thos. Craig, Liberal, by 1,681 to 966. In 1891, there was another three cornered contest. Mr. Bryson was opposed by Thomas Murray, Liberal, and H. McLean, equal rights, and the vote resulted: Murray 1,100, Bryson 795, McLean 787. But, Mr. Murray, being unseated, Mr. Bryson defeated him in the by-election the following year. Mr. Bryson was connected with a number of private enterprises. He was president of the Pontiac Telephone Company, and a director of the Crow River and Coulonge Boom Co. He was twice married. His first wife, married in 1874, Miss Mary Bryson, daughter of Thomas Bryson, M.P.P., of Fort Coulonge, died some years back. Less than two years ago, Mr. Bryson married Miss White, of Montreal, who survives him, as well as two children, one boy seventeen years of age, and the other a girl aged seven months. One of Mr. Bryson's children, it will be remembered, was asphyxiated with her grandmother while visiting friends in Montreal. Mr. Bryson was a prominent Presbyterian. The funeral will take place to-morrow afternoon, at two o'clock. A special train will leave Aylmer for Fort Coulonge on the arrival of the Ottawa 9:30 train tomorrow morning to attend the funeral of the late John Bryson, M.P., returning after the funeral. | Bryson, John W. 3099 | ?b?Obituary - Margaret Miller?/b? One by one the early settlers are passing away from this scene of action - those who braved the hardships of pioneer life and carved out homes in the wilderness of Lanark county - leaving behind them names and memories which will Long live in the hearts of those who mourn their departure. On Sunday evening last another old resident was called to her reward in the person of Margaret Miller, relic of the late John Tom, sr., who was in her 89th year. Though she had reached such a great age, her death was somewhat unexpected, as she had been enjoying fairly good health, and only two weeks ago she attended the sacramental services in the Reformed Presbyterian Church in Almonte, of which denomination she had been a zealous member for over 60 years, and seldom was her place in the sanctuary vacant when circumstances permitted her being present, until the infirmities of old age prevented her from assembling regularly with God's people. Deceased was born in Lanarkshire, Scotland, in the year 1810, and there spent a good portion of her younger days. In 1832 she, accompanied by her husband and two children, left the land of their birth to seek their fortune in this country, and after living for a time in Ramsey they settled on the 11th line of Beckwith, where they remained for a few years, and in 1837 removed to the farm on the 12th line of Ramsey, where she died. On January the 4th 1841 her husband died suddenly leaving her with six small children (four sons and two daughters) the eldest about 11 years old, but with persevering industry and help of the children and friends she soon earned for herself and family a good, comfortable home, never forgetting her duty to God. The children theretofore mentioned are all living except Margaret (Mrs. James Waddell), of Pakenham, who died some years ago. The others were: John, on the homestead; William, of Pakenham; Mary, (Mrs. James Turner) and James, of Ramsey; And David, of Whitehurst. There are also alive 32 grandchildren and 40 great grandchildren. Our departed friend was a very highly respected resident, and will long be kindly remembered by those who had the pleasure of her acquaintance. The funeral took place on Tuesday to the family burying plot on the homestead and was very largely attended, testifying to the esteem in which deceased was held. The service at the house was conducted by her pastor Rev. E. M. Coleman, of Almonte, assisted by Rev. A. E. Michael of the same town, and Rev. G. T. Bayne, of Ashton. The pallbearers were her four sons. | Miller, Margaret (I11351)
