Serious Accident
We regret to have to report an unfortunate accident met with by David T. Snedden (son of Mr David Snedden, near Blakeney) on Friday last. He was riding home from the store of Mr Jas McDougall, Blakeney, with a parcel of nails. The horse was somewhat restless, and threw him. He was not hurt, and remounted, but when going down the hill at Mr Peter McDougall's the parcel dropped from his hand and frightened the horse, and he was again thrown. This time he fell heavily on his side against some boards and was very seriously injured. He was found there by Mrs McDougall, who quickly secured help, and he was conveyed to Mr McDougall's house, where he now lies. We trust the accident will not prove fatal, although we regret to say that but slight hopes of his recovery are entertained. He has been vomiting blood freely, and suffering acute pain. The unfortunate young man is well known in this town having been a clerk in Mr Hobblewhite's store for several years, and is popular with all who know him.
LATER ?
The young life went out to its Maker to-day (Thursday) at 12:30 a.m. The sad news will cause a profound feeling of sorrow among those acquainted with the circumstances, and the mourning ones will have whatever solace there be for such a loss in the sympathy of the whole community. It is a severe blow to the parents. Deceased was their eldest son, was but 22 years of age, and was fully fitted for the active duties of the calling he had chosen. He had just completed a course in a commercial college. Although of a retiring disposition, his exemplary conduct and geniality made for him many warm friends. The funeral takes place on Saturday afternoon.

Death has been busy in these parts of late. A week ago we chronicled the demise of the infant son of Mr John Metcalf, Ramsay, and this week it is our duty to record the death of the mother, which took place on Sunday, after a short illness from pneumonia, brought on the work and worry of attending her babe during its last sickness. Mrs Metcalf (whose maiden name was Isabella Matilda Nicholson, daughter of Mr Wm Nicholson) was but 23 years of age, and was much esteemed by those who knew her. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon to the eighth line cemetery, and was largely attended.

LOCAL NEWS
Mr. Wm H. Snedden, son of Mr. John Snedden, Ramsay, died on Monday last, at the early age of 24 years. He had been ill for some time with that fell disease, consumption. Deceased went west some three years ago, and while herding cattle in Montana took ill with the trouble that has terminated fatally. He came home some months ago, since which time the thread of life has been gradually wearing out. The funeral took place to the eighth line cemetery on Wednesday, when a very large number of friends attended as a mark of sympathy with the mourning family and of regret that a life should be ended ere it had been fully developed.

Obit. ? The Late Samuel Snedden
Deep and sincere sorrow has been created in the hearts of a host of friends by the untimely death of Mr Samuel J. Snedden, son of Mr Wm Snedden, of Pakenham township, which took place rather suddenly last Sabbath evening. He was 28 years of age. Deceased was a most exemplary young man, and was very popular with all who knew him. He was for several years a clerk in Mr Jas Robertson's store in this town. Over a year ago he took ill with a lung trouble, which developed into consumption, and he grew weaker gradually till all hope of recovery was given up. The day on which he died, however, Mr Snedden had been in better spirits than usual. He had been up most of the day, and in the evening was in the act of retiring when he was seized with hemorrhage of the lungs, and died in a few minutes. Deceased being a member of Alpha Lodge I.O.O.F., Almonte, the funeral, which took place on Wednesday, to the 8th line cemetery, was under the auspices of that body. About 50 Oddfellows from this place attended. The cortege was one of the longest ever seen in the township, being nearly a mile in length. beautiful floral tributes adorned the coffin, one of them being from the Oddfellows, who held their lamented brother in very high esteem. Rev Mr Knowles was the officiating clergyman. Expressions of regret that one so young and promising should be cut off were heard on all sides. The parents have the sincere sympathy of their host of friends in their bereavement.

?b?The Late Matthew F. Snedden?/b?
At the early age of 29 years ? just when life is at its brightest for most young men ? Mr Matthew Frederick Snedden, son of Mr John Snedden, Ramsay, succumbed to an attack of lung trouble on Thursday last, and the funeral took place on Saturday afternoon, to the eighth line cemetery. It was a very large one a fine tribute to the memory of a worthy man and a tangible evidence of the sympathy felt for the bereaved household. Rev r. Hutcheon conducted the religious services. deceased was of a somewhat reserved disposition, but was a young man of fine parts. He earned the trade of machinist with Messrs Young Bros. here, then worked for some years in Pittsburgh, Pa., until he came home ill about four months ago. He was a member of Mississippi lodge A.F. & A.M. Almonte. The lodge had many representatives at the funeral, and sent a chaste wreath as a mark of respect.

On Wednesday morning Miss Maggie Neilson, daughter of Mr Jas Neilson, of the 11th line Ramsay, who has been ailing for several years, added yet another to the long list of the victims of consumption. The deceased, from being laid aside so long, was not, perhaps so well known as her sister who formerly taught school in Almonte, and is now the wife of the Rev Mr Wilkie, who was also one time assistant high school teacher here. We understand the deceased was a patient sufferer, and was thirty years of age.

The Late Mr James Snedden?/b?
The chronicler of local events has at no time a sadder duty to perform than when called on to record the death of those well known to the generality of our readers, and who have to certain extent identified themselves with the history of the locality. No face was more familiar on our streets than that of the gentleman whose death it is our sad duty to record to day. Very few indeed of our readers in Almonte and the surrounding neighbourhood but can recall the good-humoured countenance of the man who was so well and favourably known at "Banker Snedden," but whose smile will be seen no more.
The late Mr James Snedden was born on the 11th line of Beckwith in 1821. About fifty-five years ago the father of the deceased removed to Ramsay, settling at Rosebank, and building the grist mill there, afterwards going into the lumbering business, and dying at Quebec of cholera about 1834. At the time of his father's death James, who was the eldest son, was about fourteen years of age, and from that time he acted as a father to his brothers and sisters. The three brothers, James, William and John continued to work harmoniously together until the youngest was about thirty years of age, but although they were then working each for himself, the elder brother never lost his fatherly interest in their well being. Like his father, the deceased engaged in lumbering and speculation of other kinds, and was very fortunate in his pursuits, but the hard times in the lumber trade and a heavy expenditure he had been led into to improve the passage from his timber limits, caused him heavy losses. It must not, however, be supposed that he was straightened in his resources, as the widow and family are left well provided for. The deceased attended church at Rosebank on Sunday, as usual, and on Monday morning he harnessed his horse to come to Almonte, He went into the house to wash his hands and coming out of the wash-room he placed his hand on his head and exclaiming "Oh! My head!" fell to the floor in an apoploptic fit, and only rallied for a brief time in the evening, and died on Tuesday morning about six o'clock, in the 61st year of his age.
The deceased was borne to the 8th line cemetery on Thursday afternoon, the funeral being attended by a large concourse of friends and neighbours who were unanimous in the opinion that a good and worthy neighbour has been called away. The family have the sympathy of the entire community in their bereavement.

?b?Mr James R. Snedden?/b?
Another of the older generation passed to rest on Tuesday, March 23, in the person of James R. Snedden in his 79th year. About two years ago Mr Snedden suffered a slight paralytic stroke and his death in the Rosamond Memorial Hospital here, occurred after a few days' illness following a similar seizure on Friday last. Deceased was born on the 8th line of Ramsay Township, a son of the late John Snedden and his wife, Anne Lindsay. In his youth he worked in Almonte for James Robertson and later went to Belleville where he took a business course. He also worked for the J.R. Booth Company, Ottawa. Some 45 years ago he went to Minneapolis, where he spent four years, afterwards going to Shaver Calif., where he engaged in lumbering. About 30 years ago he purchased an orange grove at Strathmore Calif. and at the same time he operated a garage at Big Creek. Because of ill health he returned to Almonte, to be with his relatives, in April, 1942 and for a time made his home with his sister-in-law, Mrs D.E. Snedden and latterly he lived with his niece, Mrs W.J. Warren in Carleton Place. Very Sudden Death
Mr James Neilson of Ramsay,
Expires Almost Without Warning on Monday

? short sketch of His Life.
The people of Almonte and the surrounding country were greatly shocked on Monday morning last to learn that Mr James Neilson, one of Ramsay's most respected farmers had died suddenly of neuralgia of the heart. Mr Neilson was in his usual health till Christmas Day. On that day, after going home from church, he was taken slightly ill, but recovered to a great extent, and nothing serious was feared, During the week following Mr Neilson did not feel quite well, but on the morning on which he died he ate a hearty breakfast and felt better than he had done for some days. Between ten and eleven o'clock he felt a sharp pain in the region of the heart, and died inside of two or three minutes. The late Mr Neilson was a man of sterling character, and enjoyed the esteem of the whole community. He was an elder in St. Andrew's church, and was an exemplary Christian all his life, and his family have the consolation of knowing that the dread summons, though it came suddenly did not find him unprepared. Mr Neilson was a thrifty and progressive farmer. He was a strong Liberal in politics, a man of good natural abilities, and well informed, but was of too quiet and retiring a disposition to ever accept any public position. He was born in Paisley, Scotland, May 15th, 1820. He came to Canada in 1821 with his father, the late John Neilson, who settled on the 12th line of Ramsay immediately after coming to this country. The deceased lived for 52 years on the old homestead and the balance of his life on the farm on which he died, and which he purchased several years ago from Mr Robert Bryson, of Almonte. In 1845 Mr Neilson was married to Miss Marion McFarlane, who survives him. Mr and Mrs Neilson had nine children, and all but one are still living, vis: Mrs David Forgie (Marion), of Cleveland, Ohio; Mrs (Rev) J. Wilkie (Agnes), of Indore, Central India; Matthew, C.E., of Calgary; William G., of Beaver, B.C.; and John, Sarah, Mary and Jessie, who are living on the homestead. We tender our deepest sympathy to the widow and family who have been so suddenly bereaved. The funeral took place this (Thursday) afternoon to St. Andrew's church here, thence to the cemetery, and was very largely attended.

Obit. ? The Late Samuel Reid
On Thursday afternoon of last week Pakenham township lost one of its oldest and most esteem citizens in the person of Mr Samuel Reid, of Cedar Hill, who succumbed after an exceedingly painful illness from nephritic trouble. Deceased was born in Paisley, Scotland, seventy-two years ago, and learned the weaving trade with his father in that place. He came to Canada when he was sixteen years old, and worked for a time in the first factory in this district, established by the late Mr James Rosamond at Carleton Place ? then known as "Morphy's Falls." Mr Reid afterward worked in Westmeath for a time, then came to Almonte. Half-a-century ago he was a resident of this town, and for years, in partnership with Mr John McIntosh (the firm of Reid & McIntosh), managed a woolen factory business on the site now occupied by the Anchor Knitting Mill. Later on he took to farming, and apart from a few years' residence in the township of Dalhousie, spent the balance of his lengthened life on his farms in Pakenham. Mr Reid was twice married ? first to Mary Paul, sister of Messrs, John and Wm Paul, Ramsay; some years after her death, in the fifties, he was united to Euphemia Paul (daughter of the late Wm Paul), who survives. To the first union two children were born ? Mrs W.H. McMunn, of Dauphin, Manitoba; and Mrs Geo Ferguson, of Wawanesa, in the same province; and seven children of the second union survive, viz.: Mrs Wm Smith and Miss Agnes Reid, of Vancouver, B.C.; Samuel and James Reid, of Reston, Man.; John A. Reid, of Smith's Falls; and Mrs W. Buchanan and Wm Reid, on the homestead in Pakenham. The late Mr Reid was an intelligent and well-read man, a kind-hearted friend and a good neighbour. In politics he was an uncompromising Liberal, and throughout his life he was a consistent Christian, leaving his impress for good on the section in which he resided. He never sought public office. The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon, to the eighth line cemetery, Ramsay, and was a very large one, over one hundred carriages being in the cortege. Among the mourners present were Mr and Mrs Jas Moffatt, of Carleton Place, both of whom have gone beyond life's span. Mrs Moffatt is a sister of Mr Reid, and the last of the family now living. The services at the house and the grave were conducted by Rev Mr Logie, of Pakenham, to whose congregation Mr Reid belonged, and the Rev. gentleman in his address eulogized the deceased for the virtues that adorned his life.

Mrs James Neilson
After six months' illness from a gradual breaking-up of the system owing to age Mrs James Neilson passed to her reward on Sunday forenoon last, at the homestead on the 11th line of Ramsay. Deceased was esteemed by a large circle of friends for the womanly graces that adorned her life, and her death is deeply regretted. Mrs Neilson (nee Marion McFarlane) was a daughter of the late Matthew McFarlane, and was one of the first children born in the neighbourhood in the pioneer days, her birth taking place on the Aikenhead farm, a short distance up the Mississippi, Oct 7th, 1822 ? a year or so after the arrival of the first settlers of Ramsay. She was therefore in her 78th year. In 1845 she linked her fortunes with those of Mr Neilson, and after nearly half-a-century of happy married life Mr N. died in January, 1893. Nine children were born to them seven of whom survive, viz: Mrs David Forgie, of Cleveland; Mrs (Rev) J. Wilkie, on Indore, Central India ? now home on a visit; Matthew, C.E., of St John, N.B.; John, Misses Sarah and Mary, on the homestead; and Miss Jessie, of Cleveland, Maggie died many years ago, and William G. (M.P.P. for Kootenay, B.C.) died at the homestead in January, 1899. She was married to Mr Turner fifty-seven years ago and together they celebrated the golden anniversary of the event seven years ago, surrounded by friends and grateful for the many sincere wishes for a long continuance of the tie that bound them. To then six sons and five daughters were born. Of these nine are still living. They are: John of the farm adjoining the homestead; William, Presbyterian minister at Norval; Henry H., also a minster at Kirkfield; James A., in Ramsay; and Arthur A., on the homestead; Margaret (Mrs Henderson) in Beckwith; Marion (Mrs Thos Sadler) near Carleton Place; Jessie A., (Mrs Hill) North Augusta, and Jane at home. He was a life-long consistent member of the Presbyterian church and was an elder in Appleton church ever since the separation of the charge from Almonte. He was a man of 78 years of useful life behind him and his sure reward before. His memory will not quickly die. 4642 AGNES DUNCAN

Agnes the daughter of James Duncan and Elizabeth Lockhart was born September 14th 1872 in Ramsay Township Lot 10, Concession 11. Agnes was married in Almonte, Ontario in 1899 to Ben Holden. Agnes and her husband travelled to Western Canada the same year of their marriage and settled in Glenboro, Manitoba. They later moved to Brant Alberta where they farmed until 1943 when they retired and moved to Calgary, Alberta.
In 1905 when her mother died she is noted as from Pilot Butte, Ass.

The following is taken from a Calgary paper:

"OSTOGENARIAN ARTIST
This is a Saturday for coincidence, I journeyed up the North Hill Friday to see Mrs. Agnes (Duncan) Holden, who still enjoys a fair reputation as an artist despite her age -86yrs. While we were chatting she turned to me and suddenly announced she had been in the Regina cyclone of 1912.
Agnes is better known here for her work with paints, although that reputation can go back 60 years ago to Almonte, Ontario - a farm community outside Ottawa. I'm not a judge of art but the best illustration I saw in the Holden home was a winter landscape that was done in 1899. Mrs Agnes Holden grew up on the farm and came from a large family. When she married she had seven daughters.
On the day of the tornado (June 30,1912) she had four children but they were away from the main path of the storm.
Funny thing about this interesting lady -- she is in despair of her immediate family because she insists upon living alone (since her husband's death in 1954) but she brings up an interesting philosophical point. She claims that she enjoys her housework and still has time every day to go shopping and see the downtown sights.
She has been very cute with the paintings. Already she has given away 22 scenes to children and grandchildren. Secretly hoping to come up with another artist, I suppose. However I notice the 1899 landscape still hangs in the living room and I unhesitatingly place it as good professional work."

Agnes and Ben Holden marked their golden wedding anniversary September 1949 with all seven daughters present.
