4678 ALLAN'S OBITUARY
Lowry, Allan Robert

March 29, 1953 ? February 14, 2021

With great sadness, we announce the passing of Allan Lowry, age 67. Dearly loved husband and lifelong best friend of Donna Sweeney. Supportive and proud father of Christa, Julie, Brad (Lindsay Cavanagh) and Leanna. Doting "Bampa" to his adored grandsons Callum and William, who brought much joy to his days. Dear brother of Mary Giles (Ray), brother and best friend of Keith (Susan Johansen). Oldest child of the late R.S. Lowry and the late Dorothy Penman. Predeceased by his younger brother, Earl (1976). Treasured uncle, cousin, friend and colleague to many in his extended circles who will miss him greatly.

A lifelong farmer on the 9th line of Ramsay, Allan was devoted to Penlow Farms: building internationally recognized Holstein bloodlines, developing successful cash crop operations, expanding the farm acreage and constantly seeking new and progressive technologies, science or management techniques to improve. In 2012 Penlow Farms was recognized nationally with a Master Breeder Shield and in 2015, he built a new barn with a robotic milker ? one of the first in the area. Although fiercely proud of his accomplishments, Allan was a humble man, spending his entire life on the farm where he grew up. The smell of his fields waking up in the spring was one of his favourites.

Allan was a dedicated member of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture, the Ontario Soil and Crops Association and the Lanark Holstein Club. He made many good friends through his work on various agricultural groups and committees.

As a director, he was well respected on the Lanark Mutual Insurance Board and later on the Board of Commonwell Insurance. Allan was committed to his community and gave back as a 4H leader, the long-time chair of the Auld Kirk Cemetery Board, and as a committee member on the Municipal Economic Development and Agricultural Committees.

His was a sharp-mind, capable of completing complex mathematical calculations in his head with ease. Beating him at a game of euchre was a rare occurrence that his children never tired of attempting. He believed in supporting local before it was trendy and always celebrated the successes of Almonte, Lanark County, Ontario or Canada and their people. He was usually the quietest person in the room but would often be the one to provide a critical piece of information or a vital perspective for decision making, or a quick-witted comment to elevate the mood.

Allan loved connecting with people and could to talk to anyone. He believed that a stranger was simply a friend you hadn't met yet. If you didn't like someone, that was a sign you needed to get to know and understand them better. He believed you should live and let live.

His church family at both St. Andrews Presbyterian in Carleton Place and Almonte United held a very special place in Allan's heart. He walked his faith daily and his beliefs provided him strength, direction and peace.

A private service will be held on Saturday February 20th at 2:00 pm. The service will be livestreamed; details are available through the funeral home. Interment will take place at Auld Kirk Cemetery in the spring.

Friends may support the family at Penlow Farms, 6278 County Road 29 Almonte, on Sunday February 21st from 12 noon until 3:00 pm. Remaining in your vehicle, you will be guided through the farm to pay respects to Allan.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honour Allan's memory are asked to consider a donation to the Canadian Foodgrains Bank, a charity close to his heart that grew from Canadian farmers wishing to share their abundance with people facing hunger around the world, or a charity of your choice. https://foodgrainsbank.ca/

4690 Almonte Gazette - August 17, 1883 - Death of Mr. T. Coulter

Quite a sensation was created in town on Monday noon, as the intelligence circulated that our well known and respected town clark was very dangerously ill, and was greatly intensified a short time afterwards when from one to another was conveyed the sad news that 'Poor Tom is gone.'

At all times a familiar figure on the streets, and mixed up with every phase of public life, added to the fact that he was out and talked familiarly with on Saturday, gave to the news of his death a sharpness from which those who heard it seemed to recoil, and drew from all an expression of profound sympathy, which widened and deepened as the mournful tidings spread.

The deceased was preeminently a public man, and was associated with many institutions, municipal and others, and in which he held office at his death. Mr. Thos. Coulter was born at Clayton, in the township of Ramsay, on the 22nd Aug., 1830, so that at his death he was within a few days of being fifty-three years of age.

He grew up and settled in Clayton, and for several years kept a store and the post office in that village, where, by his business ability and courtesy, he made a host of friends. In 1856, he was appointed a commissioner for taking affidavits for use in the Courts of Ontario, and in 1860, he was appointed by the then Governor-General, Sir Edmund Head, an Ensign in the militia. In 1871, he was appointed Clerk of the township of Ramsay, and in order to give his family the benefit of the education Almonte afforded, he moved into the then village, and was appointed clerk to the municipality, in 1872. The same year he was elected to the office of Secretary to the North Lanark Ag. Society, and a little later was appointed Secretary-Treasurer to the Almonte Board of Education, and all these offices he filled at the time of his death.

It was noticed by his friends that he had been failing for some time, and last week he was severely attacked by dysentery, but was about as usual on Saturday. On the evening of that day, however, he was taken much worse, and alarming symptoms manifested themselves. At two o'clock in the afternoon of Monday, the end came, and death terminated the existence of as courteous an official as ever held office.

We have been told that when he kept the post office, he would get up in the night at any hour to give out a letter. The many positions he held made him widely known, and his genial manner made him respected by all, and the evidence of this was seen in the very large number that attended his funeral, which took place on Wednesday last, and which was in charge of the Masonic body, a large number of the fraternity from Pakenham and other places joining Mississippi Lodge in paying their last respects to the departed brother.

A short service by the Masons was held in the house, and the funeral cortege was then formed, headed by the Masons, and followed by the Mayor and Council and the Board of Education of Almonte, and the Reeve, Deputy-Reeve and Council of Ramsay. Immediately after the mourners a very large number from both town and country followed the remains, which were borne to St. Paul's Church, where the Rev. F.L. Stephenson conducted the funeral service, the church being filled, and numbers unable to get in.

The procession was again formed in like order, and wended its way through the town to St. George's Cemetery, near Clayton. The number of vehicles following was large, and was added to at every turn. The service of the English Church and the Masonic ritual were completed at the grave, and thus were laid away in their last resting place the mortal remains of one whose familiar figure will no more be seen in our midst, who had no enemies, and respecting whom the universal verdict was 'He was a real good-hearted fellow.'

The deceased left a widow and four children (three daughters and one son), who mourn the removal of a kind husband and father, and with whose loss the public deeply sympathize.

When the word spread abroad a few days ago that Mrs. Wm. Young of the tenth line of Ramsay, was seriously ill of pneumonia, hope were expressed by many that she might recover, but such was not to be, and this Thursday morning at six o'clock, she passed peacefully away to enter the home beyond, in her 85th year. The late Mrs. Young was Marion Nicholson, a daughter of the late Alexander Nicholson of Ramsay, and she was married to Mr. Wm. Young in 1857 and went to "Brae Head" farm where they lived until January 7th, 1914, when Mr. Young died. Nine children were born to them, seven sons and two daughters, and with one exception, that of Dr. John Young, who died suddenly at Smiths Falls on January 17th, 1901, the family circle is still intact. Those who are living are Robt. W., on the homestead; Alex. N., in Ottawa; Wm. M., at Detroit, Mich.; Rev. Stephen at Saskatoon, Sask.; Peter A., of Crystal City, Man., (at present at Tampa, Florida); Rev. Henry at Morningside, Alta.; Geo., at home; Jessie (Mrs. T.G. Wilson), Arnprior; Annie (Mrs. P. Y. Sutherland), Ramsay. There are 17 grandchildren still living. The late Mrs. Young was a Presbyterian, and was a member of St. John's church in Almonte, prior to which she was connected with the eighth line church when Rev. Mr. Smith was the minister. There she was a regular attendant at the services at a time when to do so meant much more of a sacrifice of comfort and ease than it does today, and when she became an attender of St. John's church she was just as earnest and faithful until declining years and relaxing energy rendered it impossible for her to continue so consistent a course. The funeral will take place on Saturday, 13th inst., from the residence of her son, Robt. W. Young, to the eight line cemetery.

4696 Almonte lost an outstanding citizen last Thursday afternoon, April 7th, in the death of Dr Joseph Tweeddale Kirkland, district magistrate, former postmaster and town clerk.

Early in December Dr Kirkland underwent an operation in the Civic Hospital Ottawa, from the effect of which he failed to rally. His death came as a great shock to a host of friends throughout this part of Ontario.

The late Dr. Kirkland was one of the ablest magistrates in the Province and his passing is a distinct loss to the legal profession.

Pleasing Public Speaker
Dr Kirkland was a pleasing public speaker and a writer of note. Readers of the Gazette are familiar with some of his contributions to the columns of the paper on historical subjects. It is safe to say that no one had a wider knowledge of those events that made history in years gone by. He was a prolific reader and a delightful conversationalist. Perhaps it could be summed up best by saying that Dr Kirkland was a most charming man with a personality that radiated good fellowship. His like will never be seen again and his loss to the town is tremencous. Flags on the town hall, Almonte and the court house, Perth, flew at half mast as a tribute to the great man who has passed away.

He was born in Sparta, Ont, in 1867, a son of the late Henry Kirkland and his wife Sarah Louise Tweeddale. Following his primary education he attended Trinity College, Toronto, where he graduated in 1887 as the gold medalist of his class, with the degree of bachelor of Civil law. In 1898 he was called to the bar with the degrees of L.L.B. and D.C.L. For several years he was lecturer in the law faculty of Trinity College and it is interesting to note that two of his contemporaries of that day were Goldwin Smith and Cheif Justice Horace Harvey of Alberta.

Practised in Windsor
For a time Dr Kirkland practised law in Windsor when that city was a comparitively small place. In 1892 he came to Almonte and practised his profession most successfully until his appointment as postmaster. On Dec 20th he was made twon clerk, apost he continued to occupy until May 1, 1921, when he resigned. he served as police magistrate for a number of years and when the present system of district magistrates became effective he continued to fill that position. After holding the position of postmaster for 27 years Dr Kirkland resigned in compliance with the regulations demanding that a district magistrate give his full time to the position.

In fraturnal circles he was a member of Mississippi Lodge A.F.&A.M. No 147 and in 1911 and 1912 was presiding master of the lodge. Interested in all forms of sport, he was a member of the bowling and curling clubs of the town. He was also an active member of the 100 club.

Dr Kirkland was twice married. His first wife Margaret Johnston, died in 1906, leaving five children. Hal of Almonte; John of Schumacher; Maurice of Oshawa; Mrs Arthur Cotton of Windsor and James who was killed in the Great War of 1918.

In 1909 he married Susan Magdalen MacGregor, who survives him. Also surviving are two brothers, Frank of Colorado Springs, Col, and Harry of Lancaster, Pa. He was predeceased by one brother, Robert of Dutton, Ont and one sister, Mary.

Accomplished Musician
Dr Kirkland was a musician of rare ability, being especially proficient on the pipe organ. His library is one of the most extensive in the Ottawa Valley.

The funeral was held Saturday afternoon from his late residence, William Street, with only the immediate friends of the family present. Interment was in the Auld Kirk Cemetery. Rev A.J. Terrill, former Trinity United Church minister here and now of Grafton, Ontario conducted funeral services at the family home and graveside. the pallbearers were three sons, Hal, John, and Maurice; two nephews, Harry and Thomas Warner of Ottawa, and a son-in-law, Arthur Cotton.

Tribute From Bench
At the opening of the county court session, Monday, Magistrate Lester Clayton paid the following tribute to the late Magistrate J.T. Kirkland of Almonte, who passed away last Thursday. "I am sure that all who knew him will be deeply shocked and greived to hear of the death of Dr Kirkland, magistrate of Lanark county. A cultured gentleman of the old school, he had thorough knowledge of the law but his decisions were always pempered with a keen understanding of human nature. He was well known for his kindness and unfailing courtesy and his death is a distinct shock to the magistrate's bench of the province. He was an example of British justice at its finest and best. the sincere sympathy of the court officials and constables is extended to his family in their great loss.

4697 Almonte lost one of its oldest and most respected citizens on tuesday evening by the death of Mr Robert Bryson, of Union street, eight weeks after he was stricken with the illness that carried him away. It was of a dropsical nature, though the infirmities of age combined to make his recovery impossible. The late Mr Bryson was born in Paisley, Scotland, eighty-three years ago, and came to Canada with his parents (the late Mr and Mrs James Bryson) in 1821. Mr B. being a child of four years. they settled the same year on the old Bryson homestead in Ramsay - the farm now occupied by Mr John Neilson - and that was the home of Mr Bryson from that time until the year 1873, when, having amassed a competence, Mr and Mrs Bryson moved to Almonte, and have lived here ever since; so that Mr Bryson was a continuous resident of this neighbourhood for almost 80 years, witnessing and doing his share in the transformation of the primigenious forest into the present prosperous and well tilled farms and happy homes of this district. In ther forties and fifties deceased was engaged with his brother (the late Hon. Geo. Bryson, of Fort Coulonge) in the lumbering operations in this section, in which he was highly successful. In 1846 he was united in marriage with Janet Carswell, who survives him, and who during his illness was devotion itself. After fifty-four years of happy married life it is needless to say that Mrs Bryson feels her loss most keenly. They have no family. The late Mr Bryson was a Presbyterian in religion and a Liberal in politics. he was a genial turn, though quiet in disposition, and was a warm-hearted friend and a good neighbour. Like most of the pioneers, he delighted in recalling the early days, and was never tired talking over incidents that occured in this section before the advent of the telegraph line or the railway, and when newspapers were not in demand as they are today - the "good old days," when there was less of the hurry and bustle and more time for social intercourse than there is to-day. For years past he was largely a prisoner at home for physical reasons. A good citizen, his death is regretted by all who knew him. The funeral took place this (Thursday) afternoon, to the eighth line cemetery, and was largely attended. Rev Mr Mitchell conducted the services. Among those who came from a distance to attend the funeral were Hon Geo Bryson, Geo Bryson jun., Mrs Bryson and Mrs Boulter, of Fort Coulonge; Senator Templeman and Mrs Templeman, from Ottawa; Mrs Geo Carswell and sons, of Calumet Island; and Mrs Jas Carswell of Bryson. Bryson, Robert (I8406)
