4718 Although not proven this mortgage was likely for the building of a stone 2 storey farm house on lot 9 con10. The style and footprint of this stone house is very similar to that of the Duncan farmhouse built on lot 10 con 9. John was the second oldest son of Robert Duncan and Agnes Gifford. He married in 1838, bought the 200 acres of lot 9 Con 10 in 1839 and had a young family of two daughters. It is also believed that he worked closely with his father and older brother Robert to clear and crop the farmland they owed by this time. Unfortunately John died in October 1844 after his youngeres child, john Duncan was born in the spring of 1844. The cause of his death is not known but must of caused great upheaval with in the family. The is land record evidence that this farm was assumed by John Forgie althought there is record registering this sale on record. John Forgie sold the farm to a nephew Graham Gorgie for $2000. on 4 Jan 1853. Duncan, John (I2323)

4719 An aged and respected resident of this community entered into rest this Thursday morning, in the person on Miss Susan Lindsay, third daughter of the late Alexander Lindsay of Pakenham township, in her 79th year, after an illness extending over several month's duration, which was borne with the greatest patience and cheerfulness. About six weeks ago deceased went to Ottawa and underwent an operation from which she never fully recovered and other complications since developed which were more than the already weakend system could stand and she passed peacefully away as stated above. The late Miss Lindsay was well known here. as she was born on the farm where she died, and there spent all her life. She is survived by one sister, Miss Elizabeth Lindsay of Duluth, Minn, and three brothers, William of Los Angeles, Cal, and Jas D. of Kars, and Alex at home, all of whom have the deepest sympathy of many friends in their sorrow. Four sisters died a number of years ago - Annie, Mrs Duncan, Mrs Marshall and Mary. The funeral takes place on Saturday afternoon, from the residence of her brother, Mr Alex Lindsay on the 9th line of Pakenham, to the 8th line cemetery at two o'clock. Service will be conducted at the house at half-past one.

4721 An old Ransom County settler died at his home at Plymouth on March 15, 1894. Patrick Madigan was at the ripe old age of 73 years. Patrick left Ireland approximately in 1847 during the great famine and landed in Bytown (now Ottawa) Ontario, Canada. He settled in Franktown, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. He entered the employ of Mr. John Hutton where he worked for a number of years.

Patrick married Johanna Powers where they farmed at Franktown and later 500 acres at Beckwith.

In 1879, his son James left for the Dakota territory. The following year the entire family arrived in the United States in 1880 and took up land on the Fort Ransom reservation. He rode with his son James from Mapleton over the prairie seventy-five miles with an ox team to take up a claim which was part of the renowned Griswold Gold Mine area. In later years he carried the books for the Oliver Post Office in a sack from Lisbon. He lived to see the county develop from a wilderness to a fertile and rich place, railroads, mills and everything that goes to make up a county.

Patrick was naturalized on August 31, 1886.

Before there was a Catholic Church in Lisbon, some of the first Masses were said in the Madigan cabin.

He leaves three sons all in good circumstances; his widow well provided; also three daughters, Mrs. Ed (Catherine) Roach, Mr. William (Ellen) Kidd, and Mrs. David (Mary) Simpson.

He was buried at St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery, Lisbon, March 17, and was followed by a large cortege of friends and neighbors.

?b?Mrs. Ross Craig Passes After Long Illness?/b?
One of the largest funerals to be held in the United Church for many years was that of Mrs. Ross Craig who died on Thursday, March 17 at the Shail Nursing Home, following 26 years of ill health. She was in her 55th year. Born on a farm on the Clayton Road, Ramsay Township in 1905, Annie May Reid was a daughter of the late John R. Reid and his wife, Margaret McKay of Middleville. She was educated at the rural school, Almonte High School and in 1925 graduated from Kemptville Agricultural School. In 1926 she married Mr. Allan Ross Craig, one of the well known farmers of this district and went to live with him on the 11th line of Ramsay. In addition to her husband she is survived by her mother who has lived in Almonte for a good many years, and by three daughters: Dorothy (Mrs. Lyle Reid) Almonte; Jean (Mrs. Keith Willows) Innisville and Miss Lois, in Ottawa. There are also two sisters, Mrs. Raymond Kemp and Mrs. Stuart Whyte of Ramsayville; two grandchildren, Shirley and Barry Willows. One brother, Robert, died in childhood. Mrs. Craig was stricken with an illness 26 years ago that eventually made her an invalid confined to a wheel chair. She spent the last three years of her life in a nursing home. But in spite of being confined to her home and the pain she suffered she was always remarkably bright and cheerful; so much so that people enjoyed visiting her.

The body rested at the Kerry-Scott Funeral Home, Elgin Street until 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon when it was removed to the United Church which is located just across the street. The pastor, Rev. J. Ray Anderson, conducted a service in which he spoke words of comfort to the mourners basing his remarks on passages from the Bible, particularly from Job and the Apostle Paul. There was almost a full choir and the flowers around the altar rail were very beautiful. Hymns sung were "What a Friend we have in Jesus," and "Abide With Me." Pallbearers were three nephews, Messrs; John Whyte, Donald Kemp and Wilfred Neilson and Messrs; Morden Duncan, Arthur MacNicol and Eric Munro. Honorary Pallbearers were members of the session of the church of which Mr. Craig had long been a member. Among the many tributes were flowers from the Bank of Canada, Ottawa; Carleton Place Public School Board; the neighbors and Circle NO. 3 Almonte United W.A.; and in lieu of flowers, donations were given to the British and Foreign Bible Society from the session of Almonte United Church; W. A. of Boyd's United Church and Mr. And Mrs. Arthur McNichol in memory of the deceased. Interment was in the Auld Kirk Cemetery

Bill's interests were many, including astronomy, rock formations, nature, history, genealogy, creating home videos, downhill skiing, ballroom dancing, golf and travel. Bill loved the Rocky Mountains camp trips when his children were young, downhill skiing and more recently hiking at Jasper. He also enjoyed spending time at the cottage on Pasqua Lake where, under protest, he would help Eleanor with one of her many projects. Last April's hot air balloon ride over the rock formations in Cappadocia, Turkey was a highlight of Bill's travel experiences. ?b?"DEATH OF ARCHIBALD CAMPBELL, ESQ.?/b?

At midnight on Sunday passed away to his post the soul of Archibald Campbell, Esq. Cut off in the bloom of manhood and the meridian of a successful life, he has rendered up his life to the onset of his terrible malady. For several days the fever which rioted rampant in his system seemed somewhat in abeyance, and serious fears were not entertained for his recovery; but the danger was hovering near, and when least expected the silent messenger came. It is not too much to say that our dead friend was universally regretted, and a deep sorrow for the event, and sympathy for the bereaved, is expressed by the community generally.
The subject of this obituary notice was born in the Township of Drummond in the early days of its settlement, and was one of a numerous family of brothers, some of whom have attained marked positions in their native country. The parents were of Highland nativity, and emigrated to this country among the first settlers, enduring the hardships and privations peculiar to the experience of the early pioneers. Mr. Campbell has resided in Perth for several years past, and held at the time of his death the offices of Division Court Clerk and Official Assignee, besides several minor offices. He was also Secretary of the South Riding of the Lanark Agricultural Society. In his official capacity he made many warm friends, constantly adding acquisitions to his list by his kindliness of manner and obliging cordiality; and we venture to say few will deny that his death has added few to his garner in this vicinity who will be more sincerely regretted, or more sacredly treasured in memory.
On Wednesday at 2 o'clock the mournful cortege bearing the remains proceeded to Elmwood Cemetery followed by many friends and acquaintances, and brethren of the Masonic fraternity, on reaching which all that was mortal was consigned to their last resting place with Masonic ceremonial, many participating in this last sad office of a long farewell until the day breaks and the night shadow flee away. In conclusion, we earnestly offer our sympathies and condolence to the bereaved assuring them in their affliction that 'there is One who doeth well what seemeth best in His might.'
The remains of our deceased citizen were deposited in their last resting place with Masonic honors, Mr. Campbell being a prominent member of the Order, and secretary of the Lodge in Perth. Large numbers of the brethren from Almonte, Arnprior, Pakenham, Carleton-Place, Lanark, Newboro', and Merrickville, joined with their fellow Masons in Perth in paying the last earthly tribute of respect to their deceased brother. The funeral took place to Elmwood Cemetery, on Wednesday last, and comprised one of the largest assemblages of all classes and creeds we have ever seen in Perth."
