5665 | David Duncan was one of early Sunday School Superintendent for United Church, and was Presbyterian Superintendent at time of union. Active in Presbyterian and United Churches and served on Board of Mangers and as an elder of each. 1883 Arrived in Cartwright . Taught at West Derby, Hazeldell, Cartwright. 1888 - 1889The first school in Badger School District #174 was built of logs in 1882 and measured 16 x 20 feet. David Duncan taught from 1888 to 1889. 1888 - The first school in Cartwright was built in 1888 and the first teacher was David Duncan at a salary of $35 per month. "Mr. Duncan was a splendid teacher and greatly loved by all his pupils. He had planned to study for the ministry and although he did one term in college was unable to complete his education." 1889 - Chesterville School District # 182 was formed in December 1884 and David Duncan taught in 1889. 1891 - 1893 Hazeldell School District #611 was formed in 1890. David Duncan was the teacher 1891-1893. Bought farm in 1895 and married Hannah Wray. 1902 - Son of Scotland was organized 13 March 1902, David Duncan was Chief. David Duncan, trustee for Cartwright Cemetery. 1903 - David Duncan is noted as a councillor of newly formed rural municipality of Roblin. 1910 Agricultural Society held first seed-grain fair and Robert and David Duncan were listed as winners. 1913 - The Cartwright Creamery - one of Cartwright's largest industries - initially financed through shares, was opened 28 May 1913, President, David Duncan. Walter Laidlaw, born at Yair Lodge, Selkirk Cty, Scotland, 29 Jul 1876, came to Canada by steamship in spring 1904. Arrived in Cartwright in fall and worked for David Duncan for approximately seven years. George Charles Richens. born 1879, arrived in Cartwright in 1891 from London England under the Dr. Barnardo's Immigration scheme. Worked for both David and Robert Duncan during his youth. Later with CNR. Son Lewis, married to Evelyn Fluker, lived on old David Duncan farm since 1934. George and wife Sarah Jane Pinkerton, retired to farm in 1944. Sold farm in 1946 after a heart attack. 5666 | David Hollie Lowry former reeve and councillor of Ramsay township died on June 14th in the Carleton Place and district Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was 83. Mr. Lowry was born Oct 6th, 1900 on the 9th line of Ramsay. There he lived and farmed all his life until he took up residence in the Nel gor Castle Nursing Home on High Street, Carleton Place four years ago. He was the second son of Samuel Lowry and his wife Rebecca Gordon. He was Predeceased by his brother Gordon and his sister Agnes Preston, and is survived by his brother George. On July 9th, 1924 he was married to Catherine Edna Gardner at her home in Ramsay township. He is survived by his wife, six sons and their wiv es; William H. and Pamela of Toronto, Gordon S. and Blanche of Ottawa, Robert S. (Bert) and Dorothy, Donald J. and May, James G. and Sandra, David W. and Lois all from the 9th Line of Ramsay. He is also survived by 20 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Mr Lowry was well known throughout the community where he did custom threshing for 40 years. In winter he cut ice on the Mississippi river for local ice dealers and others for 25 years. He cut and sawed wood as well as being a log dealer. Active in his church, he was ordained as an elder in the Presbyterian Church in Carleton Place on June 1927. He has missed being present only twice for communion in over 50 years. He also served as Representative Elder and Clerk of Session many years and was on the board of trustees. He was on the committee for building of the Carleton Place and District Memorial Hospital. He was president of the Carleton Place branch of the United Farmers of Ontario, and was president of the Almonte Co-op, a director of the North Lanark Agricultural Society and school trustee and the truant officer for Ramsay, and held other offices of trust and served the community in numerous other capacities. The funeral was held from St Andrews Presbyterian Church, Carleton Placeon June 16th at 1:30 pm, conducted by Rev Robert Hill. Interment was at the Auld Kirk Cemetery. the pallbearers were Edwin Lowry, Bert Atcheson, Wallace Cook, Douglas Guerard, Douglas Stewart and Nelson Sym. He was a resident of Lyons sine 2004, formerly of Buston. He was a retired United Methodist Church minister, and had attended Seminary. He was pastored Evangelical United Brethren at Mt. Liberty, Greenleaf, Meriden, Rock Creek, Bethany, Penalosa, Ionia, Odessa; pastor United Methodis Church at Sylvia, Huntsville, Fairview, Grainfield, Gove, Bushton, Lyons Ebenezer, Great Bend King Memorial, Albert, Pawnee Rock, Pleasant Hill, Hanover, Barnes, Coats, Lake City, and Glendale. He was a veteran of the United States Army Air Force during World War II. He was united in marriage to Wilma Esther Beals, February 16, 1947 at Salina. She preceded him in death February 18, 1986. He was also preceded by sisters Elizabeth Fuller and Margaret Neaderhiser. Survivors include two sisters, Esther Jean Gurley, Of Lawton, Okla., and Irene Viola, of Warren, Ohio, nieces and nephews. 5683 | Death came with shocking suddenness to Mrs Wm Paul, and bereft the home over which she had presided for nineteen years as the wife and mother of her loving ministrations. On Saturday morning she was in her usual good health; in the afternoon she complained of not feeling well, and a doctor was called. On Sunday he diagnosed the trouble as appendicitis, and Mrs Paul was brought to th R.M. hospital, and on Monday an operation was performed. The case proved to be a serious one, and not much hope of recovery was held out by the doctors, though up to Wednesday she was bearing the strain hopefully, but suddenly natures forces gave out, and early this Thursday morning she passed quietly away. The late Mrs Paul was Christina Porterfield, a daughter 0t the late John Porterfield of Ramsay, and was married to Mr Paul, and the balance of her life was spent within a short distance of her father's home. Beside Mr Paul, three children are left to mourn the loss that has fallen upon them. These are Olive, aged 18 years; Melville, 16 years, and Edna, 10 years. Old friends and neighbors here of Mr. Herb Munro of the 9th line of Fitzroy, formerly of Carp, will regret to hear that he died yesterday morning in the Ottawa Civic hospital. He was taken to the hospital week ago Monday and Tuesday of this week was operated on for the removal of fluid from the spine. Deceased was the son of the late Mr. Donald Munro and Mrs. Munro, now of Blackburn. He was married to Miss Mildred Baird of Kinburn, who survives with six children ranging in age from 14 to 3 years. Besides his mother he is also survived by three brothers and four sisters, namely, Robert in Saskatchewan, Herbert and Richard of Blackburn, Mrs. Arthur Styles and Mrs. R. Cavanagh of Fitzroy, Mrs. Thos Dolan of Woodlawn and Mrs. Clarence Kelly of Billings? Bridge. 5690 | DEATH OF MRS. RARICK. Stroke of Paralysis Was Fatal to Old Settler. Mrs. Minnie Elizabeth Rarick died this morning about 7 o'clock at the home of her son, Carl Rarick, 515 Ohio street. Mrs. Rarick was stricken with paralysis yesterday at her home on south Kentucky street and was taken to the home of her son yesterday afternoon. Mrs. Rarick was born in Ohio in 1844. She had lived in Lawrence and Douglas county ever since the Civil War. She is survived by one son, Carl, and one daughter, Mrs. Edith H. Johnson of Tacoma, Washington. The funeral will be held at 3 o'clock Monday afternoon from the son's home. Rev. H. E. Wolfe will officiate. Interment will be in the family lot in Oak hill cemetery.
