A Startlingly Sudden Death
A Popular Young Ramsay Farmer Called Away Without a Moment's Warning
One of the saddest and most sudden deaths that have taken place in this part of the country for some time was met with by Mr John Taylor Yuill, eldest son of Mr Robert Yuill, of the 6th line of Ramsay, on the morning of Sunday last. That morning, while taking out a team of horses to water them, he stumbled on a clump of clay and fell on his knees. His brother, who saw him fall, took the halters out of his hands, when he fell forward on his face. His sister, who saw the occurrence from the door, twenty yards away, called her father to go to him, Mr Yuill ran out immediately, but deceased was then insensible, and his breathing was scarcely perceptible. Picking him up, they carried him tenderly into the house, but this was no more then done when he passed away, death is supposed to have resulted from the rupturing of the spinal cord. It vary sad when death results from such a slight cause, and reminds us all how uncertain a tenure of life the strongest have, for the deceased was the very picture of health in our midst called forth more sincere sympathy than has been shown to the family and relatives in this instance. This was shown in a marked manner at the funeral, which took place on Tuesday last, and which, in spite of the very bad state of the roads, was one of the largest seen in the township of Ramsay for a long time. The funeral services were conducted at the house by Rev Mr Mitchell, of St John's church, and at the grave by the members of Court Excelsior No 79, I.O.F., Almonte, of which the late Mr Yuill was a member Between thirty and forty of the members were present, six of whom acted as pall bearers. The impressive funeral ceremony of the order was read at the grave by Messrs R. Hill, R.W. Haydon and P.C. McGregor. The deceased was insured in the order of Foresters to the amount of $1,000 in favour of his wife. The late Mr Yuill was only 26 years of age. His was of an unusually strong and robust frame, was gifted with a most genial disposition, and was highly respected by all who knew him. He was married in June last to Miss Hattie J Bowes, of Admaston who at the time of the accident was on a visit to her parents. The sad news was a heavy shock to the young wife, and both she and the rest of the bereaved relatives have the deepest sympathy of the whole community in the trail they have had to pass through.

6319 George Appleford is properly placed in the class of deserving men of whom our president says, "They do things."

He is not a man of words, but may easily be classed as a man of deeds. This is discernible from the success he has won and from his career which has manifested those qualities of worth and stability that characterize the true man and the progressive and prominent citizen.

George Appleford is now dwelling in Asotin, where he has a comfortable residence.

His birth occurred near Redding, in Berkshire, England, on February 14, 1855. His parents, Daniel and Mary (Ayers) Appleford, were also natives of Berkshire and immigrants to Canada in 1857. Our Subject was but an infant when they arrived in Canada, and there he received his educational training and was reared. Until 1878 he remained in his chosen country, and then came out west to Washington.

After due search, he selected a homestead on Montgomery Ridge and commenced the good work of improvement and upbuilding. He labored steadily along, adding to his estate from time to time until it is now 960 acres, all choice land and all in a high state of cultivation.

The original homestead is the nucleus of the estate and the thoroughness and continuity displayed by Mr. Appleford in his labors manifests the secret of his splendid success. Thrift and sagacity have also characterized him while integrity and a keen sense of honor are always apparent in his conduct. In addition to the labor of farming, which for more than a quarter of a century has prosecuted with success, he has also devoted himself to stock raising and has a good band of cattle now.

At Springfield, Ontario, Canada, in 1892, Mr. Appleford married Miss Lizzie Stirton, whose parents were natives of Canada.

She was born in Ontario, on December 19, 1864, and died in Asotin County, on June 9, 1903. She had been a devoted wife and mother, and in the early summer of the year mentioned fell asleep to wake amid the realities of the world beyond. Her life had shown forth the real faith that makes faithful and comforted with the graces of Christianity, she bade farewell to loved one below and calmly passed away.

The children left were Ricard Lee, born June 18, 1893; Edison J., born December 31, 1894, and Maida A., born December 31, 1898.

Mr. Appleford has the following named brothers and sisters: William E., in this county; Darius, a farmer in Canada; Sarah, the wife of Robert Wilson, of this county; Ann, wife of James McCradey, in Canada; Rachel, in Canada; and Hannah, wife of George Learn, also in Canada.

Mr. Appleford is a member of the Presbyterian Church, is also identified with the W.W. (Woodmen of the World), and in politics is a strong Republican.

6320 George Baird passes to Rest. The death of Mr. George Baird at his home on Charles Street yesterday morning came as a surprise to many of his friends who had no idea that he was so seriously ill. His ailment was diabetes, from which he had been suffering for some time, although he was able to be about his work as usual until within the last week. Mr. Baird was born in Westmeath, being a son of the late William Baird of that township, and was 47 years of age. He was one of a family of seven children, and his death is the first break in the family circle. About 17 years ago he came to Carleton Place to reside, and for the past 12 years he had been engaged in the Hawthorn Mills. He is survived by his wife, formerly Christena McCleish, and two sons, Harvey and Elmer. Also by three brothers and three sisters, viz.. John in Carleton Place, William and James in Westmeath; Mrs. Wm. Major and Mrs. S. J. Baird, of Ottawa, and Mrs. T. Kilgour, of Matheson, Ont. He was a member of Memorial Park Church and of the Can. Order of Chosen Friends. The funeral is fixed for to-morrow afternoon to Memorial Park Church and Pine Grove Cemetery. The bereaved family have the sympathy of many friends in their season of sorrow.

George K. Leeson came to Manitoba in 1880, afterwards coming west and engaging in the mail service, contracting to carry the mails from Qu-Apelle to Prince Albert, Swift Current, Battleford, Calgary, Edmonton and all western points which in those days was no small undertaking.
