6657 | H.M.H.S. 'Llandovery Castle', attached to the Canadian Forces, was commissioned as a hospital ship on 26 July 1916; she had 622 beds and 102 medical staff. On 27 June 1918, whilst on a North Atlantic crossing from Halifax, Nova Scotia, to Liverpool, England, she was attacked without warning by German submarine U-86 118 miles southwest of Fastnet Rock, off Ireland's coast; 'Llandovery Castle' displayed a brightly illuminated Red Cross sign so could not have been mistaken for anything other than a hospital ship. She sank within 10 minutes. The German u-boat captain, Kapitan Patzig, then turned his guns on the helpless lifeboats sinking all but one of them. 24 people including the master, Captain Sylvester survived; they were picked up HMS 'Lysander', but 234 others, including 88 medical staff, perished as a result of this act of German barbarity. Fortunately the ship was not carrying any patients. Nursing Sister McDiarmid was one of the Medical Staff members, aboard the 'Llandovery Castle', who perished in this attack. 6685 | he Almonte Gazette Almonte, Ontario, Canada Friday, October 29, 1897, p. 1 ?b?Obit. - Mr. John Flynn.?/b? Another of the early settlers in this part of the country, who by thrift and energy had made for himself and family a home, and by integrity and uprightness of character had won the respect of all who knew him, was called away by death on Sunday last, in the person of Mr. John Flynn, of Huntley township. For a good many years he had been in delicate health, but was always able to be around and to attend to light work and by his advice and good judgment help in the conduct of the affairs of the farm. On Friday last he was taken suddenly ill, and on Sunday the end came. The deceased was born in county Limerick, Ireland, in the early twenties, and came to this country in 1847, settling in Ramsay, where he spent several years. In 1856 he moved to Huntley township, where he has since lived. He was married to Elizabeth Kelly, of Huntley, and to them nine children were born, all but one of whom are still living. They are: Mrs. P. O'Keefe (dead); Denis and Thomas, in New York; John, in Michigan; Mrs. D. C. Healy and Mrs. M. Healy, of Smith's Falls; Mrs. Jas. Carter, (wife of Conductor Carter) of Carleton Place; Sarah and James on the homestead, and Michael on the farm adjoining. In politics the late Mr. Flynn was a staunch Liberal, but being of a quiet and retiring disposition he never took any prominent part in public matters. He was a consistent member of St. Michael's Roman Catholic church, to which the funeral (probably the largest ever seen in that section) took place on Sunday [error - Tuesday]. There High Mass was celebrated, the remains being then interred in the adjoining cemetery. The only one of the absent sons who was able to reach home in time for the funeral was Denis, who reached Brockville on Monday evening too late for a train. He at once procured a horse and driver and drove the entire distance, with a change of horses at Smith's Falls, reaching home early on Tuesday morning. | Flynn, John (I42818)
