7427 John and Sarah married around 1852 and in 1880 emigrated to the US from North Gower, Ontario.

In 1900 they were living on the family farm in Carlisle Township, ND, along with their daughter Maud.

By this time only 5 of their nine children were still alive. Two of them, Cyrus Howard and Ephriam, were living close by with families of their own. The other three living children were Maud, Howard and Louis. The deceased children were Margret, Eldoriah, John, and Chester.

Sarah's parents were Isaac and Margret Pratt, both born in Ireland around 1811.

7428 John Baird, born in 1802, was a weaver by trade in Ireland. He was quoted as saying that he arrived in Bytown (Ottawa) in the fall of 1827 and obtained the only available employment at the time - work on the Rideau Canal. He appears to have been the first of the Bairds to come over. In the spring of 1828, his wages were all spent on board and clothing and he had only seven pence ha'penny to his name. (a single silver coin, the size of a new five-cent piece but flat like a dime). At that time, there was no paper money in Ireland, only gold sovereigns ($5.00) or half sovereigns ($2.50) being used. To decide whether to remain at his Bytown job or strike out into the country, he flipped his coin "head" for leaving Bytown and "Harp" for staying. It came up "heads" so he walked "up the line" searching for an unclaimed, pleasing piece of land, until deciding to settle on what is now the 10th line of Fitzroy Township, Carleton County, . On the advice of those who had proceeded him, he "squatted" on the land and started to clear the rear of N/E 1/2 Lot 2, Concession 9, Fitzroy Township, Carleton County, Ontario. Each January, the government sent an agent from Toronto to record claims and accept payments, since it would have been impossible for all of the settlers themselves to go to Toronto. Hence the practice of "squatting". John sowed fall wheat where he cleared in 1828 and seemed to have been pleased with the results. With ashes he bought to make potash (which brought him five pounds per barrel) he earned extra money with which to pay for his farm. At this time, he owned a yoke of oxen, a cow and two pigs and his house was a log "shanty" similar to the ones owned by the other settlers. John is quoted as saying that "they never wanted for anything" - but one must remember that he belonged to another generation. Baird, John (I12319)

7430 JOHN BOUCHER. A very melancholy accident happened last week at the house of John Boucher by which Mr. Boucher, senior, aged 68, received injuries which resulted in death on Friday night last. It appears that the men were threshing and the old man, who was still strong and active, was assisting in the barn. While performing an old duty he, unfortunately, got his hand caught in the machinery, which greatly lacerated his hand and arm. The poor old man bore the excruciating pain calmly and bravely, and remained cheerful to the end. His friends did not think death was so near but the once strong man, now made weak by loss of blood; quietly breathed his last. The funeral, which was very large, took place on Sunday. The long line of mourners which followed the remains to the Methodist Church, where the Rev. Mr. Richardson, delivered a very touching and impressive discourse, and then to the village Cemetery, attests the honour and respect in which the deceased was held by all classes, who now extend their heart-felt sympathy to the sorrowing friends.

DUFFERIN ARCHIVES - Obituary:
**************************
With the passing of John Kidd, who died at his home in Everett a couple of weeks ago, one of the original settlers in the township
of Tosorontio is removed.
Mr. Kidd is probably the last of the old guard. There may remain some who knew and associated with these original pioneers half a century ago, but so far as known the original incomers have all passed away.
Mr. Kidd was born at Mono Mills and spent his boyhood and youth there. When about 24 years of age he and his brothers, Joseph, Henry, and, Thomas made their way up to what is now Airlie and finding the land there excellent, and an abundance of water, they decided to locate, and took out their patent rights to Lot 22 and 23 on the Tosorontio side and Lots 22 and 23 in Mulmur side. They were in a wilderness, their nearest neighbors being on the 6th line of Mulmur near Mansfield. On their property is the famed Rookery Creek where wild pigeons came in countless thousands to nest. Here the deceased put in nearly half a century overcoming all the handicaps of pioneering, transforming forest lots into a splendid farm, raising a large family and prospering.
He was a sturdy type of man possessing all the characteristics of mind and the tireless energy of the successful pioneer to whom this country owes a great debt.
He was an Anglican in religion and a Conservative in politics.

7437 JOHN DUNCAN

John Duncan son of James and Elizabeth (Lockhart) Duncan was born on April 19th 1865 in Ramsay Township Lot 10 Concession 11, near Almonte Ontario. John married Jessie Steele of Ramsay in 1903. They had four children all born in Regina, Saskatchewan, James (Jim), Mary ,Johnston and Willis.

In Regina when mother died in 1905.

Memories of My Father John Duncan by his oldest son Jim.

In his earlier days on his parents farm, he helped with various chores and farm work. During the winters as he reached his late teens he went to the bush to haul logs with a team of horses. He commented about a spring when returning home there was a track on the snow over the ice on the river; the track on the snow started to rot in the spring thaw and one of the horses broke through the ice and was nearly lost. I failed to pay the attention I should have of his earlier days.
He arrived in Regina in 1890 and here filed on a homestead. Farming at that time on the Regina plains was about as primitive as the early days in Ontario except the land was very flat, few trees or stones to clear. As other Homesteaders of that time he broke his land with a hand plough, which was single share controlled by two curved handles at the back for the operator to gage the depth he wanted. The plough was hauled by horses, the reins secured around his waist so his hands were free to guide the plough. Two acres a day was a good days work; homesteaders often hired out to do breaking for others pay ranging from five to ten cents an acre.
In later years I always admired his adapt way of handling and binding the loose stalks of grain. The grain having been cut with a sythe and bound together to make a sheaf. This was before binders and threshing mills. Father talked of threshing grain in the winter, the engine from which they got the power and the separator having to be hauled by horses. Our house was small but it had a big kitchen, large enough to feed a threshing crew of twenty men. The farmers had a "Beef Ring" each farmer provided a beef animal in rotation and in rotation they accepted their turn at each cut of beef. The butcher was another farmer who got a free ride in that he didn't have to provide a beef.
In February of 1912 our mother died and my father's sister came and looked after us for some years. For the first twenty-one years of my life father saw a great deal of me and I of him, seemed to me that my father and all his brothers were mild mannered men who were able to accept their setbacks and proceed as though nothing much had happened to dampen their optimism.
Johnston my brother who had remained on the farm with our father took over the farm when father retired.

Dr John H. Paterson
Dr John H. Paterson, of Bow Island, Alta., died on Saturday at Medicine Hat following an operation. An elder brother was with him when he died. The remains were interred with those of his wife at Bow Island. The late Dr. Paterson was a son of the late Mr and Mrs William Paterson, of Ramsay. He was educated at Almonte High School and proceeded to McGill University, where he graduated in medicine about twelve years ago. Immediately after his graduation he went west and settled in Bow Island, in the province of Alberta. He became a very successful practitioner and was recognized as the leading citizen of the place. While he was a student at McGill he underwent an operation for appendicitis, from the effects of which he never fully recovered, although the operation after which he died was performed to remedy a stomach trouble. He lived only a week. He had been passing through Medicine Hat to have a yachting holiday on a cruser on the Pacific coast which he had purchased. His brother, R.M., who was a merchant in Luseland, had hope to be able to join him. Six years ago Dr. Paterson visited his old home here and he had expected to be here again for the Old Boys' Reunion at the end of July. Besides his brother in the west, he is survived by three brothers, W.C. and G.E. are farmers in Ramsay, and Thomas R. is the well known dentist of Almonte. The late Dr. Paterson's wife was a Port Dalhousie girl. She died about two years ago.
