7461 John Munro obituary
Posted 25 Apr 2018 by Patricia McCaw
Death Notice: Bancroft Times

"Once again, death, the Grim Reaper has passed our way and removed from this life on the last of the early pioneers of this district in the person of John Munro, a resident of Turriff. Born at Hall's Mills, Lanark County on Sept 3, 1850, a son of the late John Munro and Marion McKay, who immigrated from Dornoch, Sutherlandshire during the Scottish Clearances, he was one of a family of seven all of whom have predeceased him.

In the early summer of 1879 he came to Dungannon Township where he located on what was then called the second concession.

On February 24th, 1880, he married Mary Turriff, second daughter of John Turriff who was the first settler and for whom the settlement was later named.

Mrs. Munro passed away nine years ago. One daughter Mrs. A.W. Munro died ten years ago, while another, Mary died in infancy. Six children survive. John of Detlor, Alex. Daniel and Mrs. W.J. McCaw of Bancroft, Peter and Mrs. H.L. Black of Turriff, with whom he has spent, on the homestead, the last six years.

On Sunday morning, July 12th, he suffered a stroke, shortly after sinking into an unconscious condition, from which he never recovered, passing quietly away Wednesday afternoon.

In religion, a life long member of the Presbyterian faith, he was laid to rest in the cemetery at L'Amable beside his wife and daughter on Thursday afternoon. Mr. F. Wicks conducted the service at the home and church, while members of the Bancroft Masonic Lodge conducted a committal service."

7463 John passed peacefully from mortality after a long, productive, and exemplary life on Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at the age of 94 years.

He will be missed by Jean, his wife of almost 69 years, his children Raymond (Patricia), Randy (Cherry), Cheryl (Eric), Leonard (Keltie), Valerie (Cameron), Linda (Richard), and Glen (Jan) as well as 33 grandchildren and 56 great-grandchildren.

John was born at Macklin, Saskatchewan, and spent his adult life in Alberta, teaching school in Cold Lake, Glenwood, Taber, and Calgary.

He was a dedicated teacher at home, at school, and at church. Gifted with a keen intellect and inquisitive mind, his teaching skills were always evident. John cared deeply about his students, and would always stop to talk to them whenever he encountered them. His best lessons came from his love of everyone he met, and most of all from his actions. John and Jean taught us how to love camping, how to love others, and how to care for others' needs.

7500 Kenneth Bethune Scott
Kenneth Bethune Scott passed away at 18 years of age, after a lengthy illness. He was the eldest son of Mr and Mrs Harvey W Scott and was a native of Almonte. He was a particularly promising boy, a good student at the High School and a fine athlete. The race he ran two or three years ago when he won the Junior Hundred Yards at the High School sports day was spectacular and was long talked of.
He was a good musician playing the violin well.
Of an engaging disposition he endeared mimself to many and it was a shock to them to learn that there was little or no hope of his recovery, when he became ill. He himself never gave up hope, until the very last, and always spoke cheerfully of his condition.
He was an active member of Bethany United Young People's Society and the Sunday School. He had the faculty of throwing himself, heart and soul, into everthing in which he was interested.
Besides his parents he leaves to mourn his loss two younger brothers - Arthur and Edward.
The deep sympathy of the community found expression in the large attendance at the funeral on Wednesday, and in the magnificent flower tokens. Very impressive services were conducted by Rev. J. R. MacCrimon and Rev. J. T. E. Blanchard. The pallbearers were six of his schoolboy friends; Lawrence Barrowclough, Howard Allison, Eric Smith, Hedley Porter, Kenneth Fraser, and Stewart Johnston. his remains were interred in the auld Kirk Cemetery.
