7757 | March 31, 1934 Almonte Gazette The funeral was held in Almonte on Monday afternoon, of Dr. James r Mackintosh Bell. He died at his home "Old Burnside" last Saturday morning following an illness of several months' duration. He was 57 years of age. The late Dr. Bell was born at St. Andrews, Que., on Dec. 23rd, 1877. He was a son of the late Andrew Bell and Marianne Rosamond. His parents removed to Almonte soon after Dr. Bell's birth and lived in the residence on Mitcheson street, lately purchased by T. A. Thompson, M.P. Dr. Bell's father was a well known civil engineer of the Ottawa Valley. His uncle Robert Bell, was for many years Dominion Geologist. Simplest rites characterized the funeral here Monday afternoon of Major James Mackintosh Bell, M.A., Ph.D? O.B.E., LL.D., world renowned geologist, explorer,' traveller, author, soldier and lecturer, who passed away at his home, "Old Burnside," Saturday morning in his 57th year, after a life of color, usefulness and service to his King and country and to his fellow men in Canada and in far off lands, Siberia, Russian Turkest&n, Australia, New Zealand and Manchuria. War comrades attended but there was no firing party, and there was no funeral oration, just a brief service of marked dignity and beauty. Several hundreds, including more than a score of his most intimate friends from Ottawa, attended the service in St. Paul's Anglican church to pay their last tribute of respect to Major Bell as a man, who while he won undoubted fame for his brilliant woik in many fields, yet was always best known and most respected for his distinct charm of personality and his unusual capacity for making and keeping friends. Old comrades of the 73rd Battalion, which Major Bell recruited, provided the' pallbearers and a guard of honor which stood smartly at attention as the cortege passed the Almonte war memorial enroute to the Auld Kirk cemetery where the casket was placed in a vault, pending interment in the Anglican cemetery later in the spring. The casket was flag-draped, emblematic of Major Bell's outstanding war services for which he was given the decoration of the Order of the British Empire. Many of the floral tributes, which were sent with a wealth of profusion despite the request of the family that flowers be omitted, were placed on the memorial. The town flags were half-masted as a mark of respect to Major Bell as one of Almonte's most noted sons. While he travelled far throughout the world, his home has been here since his very early boyhood years. The streets of the town were practically deserted during the period of the service and later many citizens Stood with bowed heads as the cortege wended its way slowly through the streets to the cemetery. Major Bell was honorary president of the Almonte branch of the Canadian Legion; member of the Mississippi Lodge, A.P. and A.M., Almonte; president of the Ottawa branch of the League of Nations Society in Canada; second vice-president of the Canadian Geographical Society, and a past president of the General Alumni of . Queen's University. Representatives of these and other organizations with which he was more or less closely associated during his lifetime were present a t the funeral. Church Service In charge of His Grace the Most Rev. Dr. J. C. Roper, archbishop of Ottawa and metropolitan of Ontario; Archdeacon D. T. Clayton of Perth; and Rev. J. J. Lowe, rector of St. Paul's, the service lasted just half an hour. Claude Thomson, St. Paul's organist, officiated a t the organ and W. H. Morton led the full choir. The hymns, favorites of the deceased, were "The King of Love My Shepherd Is" and "Unto the Hills Around Do I Lift Up My Eyes." The responsive readings embraced the 90th and the 23rd Psalms. The Scripture . lesson was the usual one, the 16th Chapter of the 1st Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians. The 'committal service was said in the church, followed by the recitation of the Lord's Prayer ill unison and the benediction by Syg Grace. As the flowers were carried from the church, the organist rendered "Days and Moments Quickly Playing" and then the Nunc Dimittis was chanted as the casket was borne from the church. Resting on the casket were two sprays of Lilies-of-the-valley, from the family, and a cross of balsam, fashioned by the elder son. Chief Mourners Among the chief mourners were the widow Mrs. Bell, formerly Miss Vera Margaret Beauchamp, daughter of Sir Harold Beauchamp of Wellington, New Zealand; two sons, Andrew B. M. 7758 | Marcia Anastasia Christoforides, Lady Beaverbrook (formerly Lady Dunn) (27 July 1909 ? 28 October 1994) was a philanthropist, an art collector, and racehorse owner. Born in Sutton, Surrey, England, she was the daughter of John Christoforides. For a number of years she worked as personal secretary for the wealthy Canadian financier James Hamet Dunn, 1st Baronet. Eventually their working relationship became personal although he was thirty-six years her senior. In 1942 she became his third wife after she had nursed him back to health from a coronary thrombosis which nearly claimed his life; his second wife was absent from his bedside during this crisis. She had been a devoted employee and he would seek her input on most every business matter for the rest of his life. The couple maintained homes in England, France, and at the Canadian seaside resort of St. Andrews in New Brunswick, the province of her husband's birth. In the late 1940s, Lady Dunn and her husband developed a friendship with the Spanish artist Salvador Dal? who painted several portraits of them, notably Equestrian Fantasy - Portrait of Lady Dunn. These works are now on permanent display at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Known as Christofor to her family and friends, on the death of her husband in 1956 she became the beneficiary of a large estate and also the administrator of a fund to be used for charitable purposes. One of her late husband's closest friends was his fellow New Brunswicker, Max Aitken, 1st Baron Beaverbrook who acted as her advisor. The two developed a very close friendship and Lord Beaverbrook, who had been a widower for many years, came to have great respect for her. In June 1963 the eighty-four-year-old Beaverbrook and the fifty-three-year-old Lady Dunn married. Lord Beaverbrook had already used his fortune to greatly benefit the citizens of the province of New Brunswick in Canada. By virtue of their marriage, Aitken was able to name her the legal overseer of a large part of his estate that he wished to go to further charitable works. Lord Beaverbrook died a year after their marriage and Lady Beaverbrook was left with the responsibility of large benevolent fund. With this, and the funds from her first husband's estate, she became one of Canada's most prominent philanthropists. On behalf of her first husband considerable funds were donated to his alma~mater, Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. In 1967, she was awarded an honorary Doctor of Law (LL.D.) from that institution and in 1968 she was appointed the University's Chancellor, a position she held for the next twenty-seven years. Lady Beaverbrook's high-profile in British society and the publicity from her philanthropic work resulted in an assassination attempt. On May 4, 1971 a bomb was strapped to the underside of her Rolls-Royce Phantom VI car (which is coloured green and brown, her horse racing colours), placed there by The Angry Brigade, a British terrorist group. The device was detected before it exploded. The car is now part of the collection at the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu. A devotee of show horses and equestrian events, she was also a leading race-horse owner, spending a vast amount of money on horses. Her horses almost always had names made up of seven letters. Amongst the many thoroughbreds she owned were: Boldboy - a gelding, who won twelve group races including the Lockinge Stakes and Sprint Cup, on his retirement he was the highest ever stakes-winning gelding to have raced in the United Kingdom Bustino - won the 1974 St. Leger Stakes and the 1975 Coronation Cup and was her highest rated racehorse Relkino - won the 1977 Lockinge Stakes and Benson and Hedges Gold Cup as well as being runner-up in the 1976 Epsom Derby Niniski - a son of the great Nijinsky II, he won the 1979 Prix Royal-Oak at Longchamp and the Irish St. Leger, then became one of the leading sires in flat racing. Petoski - won the 1985 Prince of Wales's Stakes and the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes Minster Son - won the 1988 St. Leger Stakes Terimon - runner-up in the 1989 Epsom Derby and won the 1991 International Stakes Mystiko - won the 1991 2,000 Guineas She started owning horses in the late 60s and initially had her horses trained by Sir Gordon Richards. In 1971 on his retirement, she transferred them to Dick Hern. In later years she had horses with Clive Brittain. She bred horses as well as owning them. Legacy: The Christofor Foundation Lady Beaverbrook died in 1994 having donated the equivalent of nearly $300 million (at today's value) to support education, cultural undertakings and wildlife preservation. In addition to the charitable trusts from both of her husbands, the Christofor Foundation for charitable purposes was established by friends out of her personal estate. A lover of animals, among the many philanthropic causes Lady Beaverbrook supported, the established the Sir James Dunn Animal Welfare Centre at the University of Prince Edward Island with a $2.2 million gift. Amongst other worthwhile causes, the Foundation from her personal estate also helped fund the Science East Association in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Because the Province of New Brunswick was home to both of her husbands, it contains many institutions built with funding from their estates. However, large contributions were made to numerous causes throughout the four Atlantic Provinces, most notably in education. In her memory, the Sir James Dunn Foundation of Saint John, New Brunswick made a $1 million donation toward the establishment of a student residence bearing her name at Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. Christofor Hall was officially opened on October 26, 2002. --------- Dunn and his second wife divorced in 1942 following which he married his long-time personal secretary, Marcia Anastasia Christoforides. Thirty-six years his junior, "Christofor" as she was nicknamed, was very bright, intensely loyal, and a devoted partner. James Dunn would seek her input on most every business matter for the rest of his life. | Christoforides, Marcia Anastasia "Christofor" (I14725)

7781 | Marion was baptized May 2, 1790 in Rutherglen, Lanark, Scotland, the 2nd of 4 children born to David Park and Agnes Urie. She married Henry Airth on January 29, 1813 at Alexandra Street Parade Church in Glasgow, Lanark. In June 1827, she sailed from Glasgow for Montreal with Henry and their 7 children. She also brought a church letter of commendation with her which stated that 'she was of exceptional moral character and would be an asset to any society in which she found herself'. During the voyage, which would have been extremely difficult and crowded, another child was born June 27th. Sadly, the little boy, named James, died and was buried at sea a couple of days later. Twin sons, Joseph & John, were born in 1828 in Canada, only to die almost immediately. ________ She died of "decay of nature", being ill only 3 months. | Park, Marion (I41932)
