8166 | Martin was born in Rathellin/R?th Ail?n Townland, Leighlinbridge, Carlow, Ireland, and baptized 07 Nov 1833. Brothers Patrick and Martin Burns, and their widowed mother Margaret, immigrated to Ontario from Ireland abt. 1851. Margaret married Cornelius Madden (also a widower with adult children), and in the marriage settlement Madden gave Margaret's sons what would become the original Burns homestead in Ramsay Twp (East ? Lot 10, Con. 12), which was located opposite to the Madden homestead. (Concession 12 is now Golden Line Road, and Lot 10 is located where it intersects with Old Almonte Road, on what would be the southwest corner.) Patrick and Martin lived and farmed on the property, together. Patrick married in 1859, and brought his new wife Mariah there; Margaret also joined them there following Madden's death. By the 1861 Census of Canada, Martin was no longer living with Patrick on the property, his whereabouts unknown. The following notice then appeared in the The Perth Courier on March 20, 1863: "Sheriff's Sale of Land at Public Auction - Lands and tenements of Patrick Byrne at the suit of Martin Byrne, East ? Lot 10, 12th Concesion [sic] Ramsay". So, Martin sued Patrick, almost certainly for his 1/2 share of the property. The presence of the lawsuit indicates Patrick didn't recognize Martin's claim, and the fact that it was successful (resulting in the forced sale) shows that Martin was judged to be in the right. With this information, Martin's absence from the property in 1861 might indicate that the dispute over it went back at least that far. Regardless, Patrick and Martin came to an agreement and and avoided both the auction sale and any division of the land, though the details are unknown. Patrick died of sunstroke just a few years later, in 1867, while working in the fields, with his 6 year old twins, Martin and Peter, at his side. Martin returned to the property after Patrick's death and remained there for the rest of his life (another 31 years), helping Patrick's widow Mariah run the farm, and raise her 4 children. After Martin died in 1907, Mariah left the Burns homestead and moved to nearby Almonte, where she died in 1911. [H. Presley] ---------------------------------------------------------- The Almonte Gazette Almonte, Ontario, Canada Friday, January 18, 1907, p. 9 ?b?Obit.--Martin Burns.?/b? It was a sudden call that was answered by Mr. Martin Burns and which ended his connection with things terrestrial on Monday morning. He had been about the day previous apparently in his usual health, and that had always been good, but early Monday morning the summons came to him suddenly. Deceased was a brother of the late Patrick Burns, of Ramsay, who died many years ago, leaving a widow and family of small children. Martin Burns took these under his special care, and his life was spent for them, and no demand was made upon him that was too great for his warm Irish heart to respond to. He was nearly eighty years of age, had never married and had made his home at Mr. Burns' since the death of his brother. The funeral took place on Wednesday to St. Mary's church and cemetery and was a fitting tribute to a genial, warm-hearted, honest Irishman. Heart failure was the cause of his death. ---------------------------------------------------------- St. Mary's RC Church Almonte, Ontario, Canada Parish Register, p. 295 ?b?Martin Burns?/b? On this the sixteenth day of January in the year nineteen hundred and seven We the undersigned parish priest have performed the funeral service for Mr. Martin Burns who died fourteenth inst [instant]. The wit. are James Galvin and Henry Kennedy who have signed the Register with us. [signed] James Galvin, Henery Kenedy [sic], J. Hoskin | Burns, Martin (I42843)

8181 | Mary James, age 94, of Buffalo passed away on December 1, 2010 after a brief illness. A memorial service will be held on December 4 at 3:00 PM at the Peterson-Grimsmo Chapel in Monticello, with Pastor Jim Disney officiating. Visitation at the Chapel begins at 2:00. The family plans a private interment. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary's memory may be made to your local Humane Society or animal rescue organization. Mary was born on November 6, 1916, the daughter of John J. Fisher and Angelina Getzan Fisher in Mason City, Iowa. When Mary was 4, the family moved to rural Big Lake, a small house she referred to as the house by the big woods. Her education started in a one-room school in that area. Later the family moved to a farm nearer to Monticello where she attended school. A later move in 1928 brought them to Wright County. On June 3, 1939, she was united in marriage to Mark H. James, also of Monticello Township, and they resided on their farm in rural Buffalo all their lives. Their union was blessed with three children ? Dorothy, Daryle, and Harlow. The first years of married life were difficult in the aftermath of the Great Depression and World War II. As years went by, Mary also worked off the farm at various jobs, including dishwasher at Etta's Caf? in Buffalo, clerk in Burkland's Department Store, accounting department at Advance United Shipping in Minneapolis, Hoffman Electric in Buffalo, Van Dusen in Wayzata for 13 years, briefly at Loram in Hamel, and also for a short time in Human Services at the Buffalo Court House. During these years, she was always striving to further her knowledge and got her GED diploma at age 60. Her great love of reading enabled her to run the Buffalo Public Library, a job she loved because she could help so many young people. She held the position of evening and Saturday-afternoon work for nine years. She had read about a great librarian in the big public library in Minneapolis who could help people find any book on any subject and it was her desire to be like that. She had a following of a great many young people who would come by to thank her for her assistance. She also sent books and magazines to people she knew were ill and unable to come to the library. After 22 years of these activities, Mary retired and could finally devote her full time to her other great love, gardening. The one large vegetable garden evolved into an extensive flower garden. A new vegetable garden, rock garden, and small orchard were started. She took great pleasure in sharing and swapping plants with friends. She also pressed dried flowers and leaves from her garden and used them to decorate her own greeting cards. Mary was a charter member of the Wright County Horticultural Society and for many years wrote a monthly column for its newsletter. She was also a member of the Minnesota Iris Society and Minnesota Hemerocallis Society, as well as an honorary lifetime member of the Anoka Area Garden Club. When she wasn't working in her garden, Mary also made more than a dozen quilts for family members, and embroidered pillowcases for all her nieces and nephews. Mary is survived by her daughter Dorothy James and James Stolpa of Austin, TX, her daughter and son-in-law Daryle and Michael Hamlin of Ramsey, MN, and her son Harlow James of Lakewood, CO; three grandchildren, Chad (Virginia) James of CA, Ethan (Colleen) James of VA, and Dr. Colleen James of NC; and two great-grandchildren, Forest and Sissy James. Mary also leaves to mourn many nieces and nephews in Minnesota, Iowa, and the Chicago area. Many good friends and neighbors called her Aunt Mary, Grandma Mary, and even Mom, and enabled her to stay in her own home until her last days. The Holm family and the Smolen/Brown family were so especially close that she considered them her own extended family. Their daughters, Avery Holm and Leah Brown, are her Minnesota granddaughters. | Fisher, Mary (I30306)

March 19, 2017 Our beloved Mary passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 19, 2017 at the Lakeshore General Hospital. She was in her 93rd year, having been born in Montreal on June 5, 1924. Mary was a ray of sunshine. She sought and found the good in everything and she shared her love of life with us all (every day). Duncan Duclos, her two sons, Victor Reginald Duclos and Christopher Duncan Duclos and her father Edward and mother Lois Sybil (Harrington) Winslow-Spragge. 8191 | Mary McIntyre Obituary Mary Ann McIntyre (nee Symington) January 10, 1909 June 28, 2011 Mary Ann McIntyre (nee Symington), passed away peacefully Tuesday June 28, 2011 at Saskatoon, Sask. aged 102 years. Survived by daughter Margaret Phillips, four grandchildren (Glenn, Kimberly, Laurie Sutherland; Mark Phillips) and two great-grandchildren (Naim, Hannah Sutherland), four nephews (Allan and Dave Brown; Edward and Charles McIntyre), and three nieces Joyce Bergman, Darlene Peterson, Wilma Chapman and Gail Colbourne and other nieces and nephews much loved in Ontario. Pre-deceased by husband Everton McIntyre, daughter Evelyn (Sutherland), brothers Milton, Charles, Alexander, and sister Evelyn, nephews Jack, Gordon, George Brown and nieces Eileen Fouhse (Brown). Born 1909 on a farm in Almonte, Ontario, Mary was raised with two home boys who went off to fight in WW1, and she also knew as a child a survivor of the Titanic. Although she loved school, especially algebra, Mary only completed Grade 10, at which point she had to stay home to help her mother. She obtained her Licentiate in Piano from the Royal Conservatory of Music in 1928. Before her marriage to Everton in 1930 she played at dances throughout the Ottawa Valley with her brothers as the Symington Orchestra, stalwartly driving all of them home in the wee hours in a model T Ford. Upon moving west in 1930, she and Everton raised their family and farmed near Langham, Sask. until 1974. One of her first tasks upon arrival in Langham was to feed the road crew that was building the Yellowhead Highway and the Borden Bridge. Her legendary cooking from her large kitchen garden and loving manner made her a main stay in the District, where she boarded the teacher (supporting, among others, William Perehudoff to get his education), fed threshing gangs and kept several members of Everton's large family during the Depression. During many years living in Saskatoon, she was an energetic center of social and family events, sports, and an inexhaustible source of garden blossoms, food, and laughter for friends and neighbors. Since 1995 she lived at Prairie Springs Care Home, where the laughter continued to the end. Besides her love of plants and birds, family and friends near and far were the centre of Mary's life, and she remained keenly interested in their wellbeing all of her life. She leaves behind a very large legacy of love, light and grace in those who knew her. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Prairie Springs Care Home, Saskatoon. The Funeral Service will be held Saturday, July 2, 2011 at 1:30 p.m. at Saskatoon Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent to mail@saskatoonfuneralhome Arrangements have been entrusted to SASKATOON FUNERAL HOME, 244-5577. 8197 | Mary was born in Oso Township, Frontenac County, Ontario, on Aug.6,1863, the adopted daughter of Henry Sergeant & Jane McDougall. Some believe Mary's last name should be spelled 'Sergison', rather than 'Sergeant'. ------------------------------------ Plot E-58 : - Robert McDonell 1862-1944 - his wife, Mary Sergeant 1863-1925 ------------------------------------ (Note by Gary Darby) - Mary was my great-grandmother. She was born August 6, 1863. She was adopted by Henry Sergeant and his wife Jane McDougall. Family stories passed down over the years say that she was born Mary Fisher. It is said her mother was not married when she was born, and that the family was leaving the area (Oso Township, Frontenac County, Ontario). The family decided to leave Mary behind and she was adopted by the Sergeants as a baby. Stories also say that Mary's mother returned several years later and wanted Mary back, but the Sergeants would not give her up and Mary did not want to leave either. On March 27, 1889 Mary was married to Robert McDonell. In August 2008 my mother received a letter from her 1st cousin, Jessie (McDonell) Donnelly, who lives in Sharbot Lake, Frontenac County, Ontario. Jessie's father was John Travers McDonell, a son of Robert and Mary McDonell. Jessie said in her letter that her father always said that his mother was Mary McCoy, not Mary Fisher. This was the first I had heard this. I did an 1871 census search in Oso Township and there was a McCoy family living there at the same time as the Sergeants and McDonells. The head of household was Arthur McCoy age 33 and his wife Catherine age 23. They had 3 young children ; Ellen 5, Margaret 3, and Alexander 1. At this time Mary was the adopted daughter of the Sergeants and was 7 years old. I did a search on Lanark County GenWeb and found a McCoy Family Tree (Descendants of Alexander McCoy born 1791 Ireland). Alexander McCoy was married to Mary Robinson and they had 11 children, one being Arthur McCoy, born 1836 in Toronto, who lived in Oso Township. This is where everything starts falling together. Arthur McCoy was married on July 7, 1864 to Catherine Fisher/Tait, daughter of Nathan and Mary Fisher. Catherine was born in Darling Township, Ontario in September 1849. The McCoy family tree calls her Catherine Tait. It would appear Catherine was presumably married to a Tait before Arthur McCoy. We have the names (McCoy & Fisher) together in this family who lived near the Sergeants. My great-grandmother, Mary (Fisher) Sergeant, as mentioned above was born August 6, 1863, 11 months before Catherine Fisher married Arthur McCoy. I believe Catherine Fisher was the mother of Mary and gave her up to the Sergeants for adoption when she was a baby. I am not sure who the Tait was in Catherine's 1st marriage and whether they separated or he died. I know this is not proof, but there are too many coincidences for it not to be true. She was always said to have been born a Fisher. Her son, John Travers McDonell, said she was a McCoy. Arthur McCoy and Catherine Fisher/Tait were married 11 months after Mary was born. The McCoys lived very close to the Sergeants in Oso Township. Catherine Fisher apparently was somehow connected to a Tait before she married Arthur McCoy and he was probably Mary's father. Plus she would have been about 14 years old when Mary was born, much too young to look after a baby. Catherine was 17 when she had her 1st child with Arthur McCoy. | Sergeant, Mary (I29767)
