After a lengthy illness, the death occurred in hospital in Ottawa on April 5th of one of the pioneers of Pakenham Township, in the person of Alexander Robert Melanson. He was in his 94th year and had lived all his life in Pakenham Township. Mr. Melanson was the youngest and last surviving member of the family of Alexander Melanson and his wife, Agnes M. Kettrick, the others being Mrs. Jas. Connery (Jennie), Pakenham; Joseph, Arnprior and Mrs. John Shane (Ellen), North Dakota. In 1895 he was married to Caroline Millar, who died in 1945. To them was born a family of four daughters and six sons. Those surviving are, Lorne, Pakenham; Mrs. J. C. Fulton (Effie), Cedar Hill; Mrs. James Currie (Agnes), Ottawa; Mrs. Stuart Currie (Ray), Blakeney; Clifford, Pakenham; William, Arnprior; Mrs. Thomas Fulton (Jennie), Pakenham and Joseph, Almonte. In spite of his advanced years, he retained a wonderful memory to the last and delighted in telling many interesting stories of pioneer days. He also continued to have a deep interest in local, political and worldwide affairs. Officiating at the funeral service held in the Kerry-Scott Funeral Home was his pastor, Rev. W. L. Henley of Zion United Church, Cedar Hill, who paid tribute to the character and disposition of the deceased. The large attendance of friends, and neighbours and the numerous floral offerings testified to the esteem in which he was held. The pallbearers were Messrs. Herbert Stanley, John Lawson, Hiram McCann, Clarence Boal, James Connery and Jack Forsythe. Interment was in the United Church Cemetery, Pakenham.

8256 Memorable Manitobans:
Harvey Cathcart Simpson (1862-1928)

Grain dealer, MLA (1908-1910), MLA (1911-1914).

Born at Ashton, Ontario on 11 February 1862, son of Robert Simpson and Frances Cathcart, brother of R. M. Simpson and J. C. Simpson, he was educated at Ashton and Carlton Place, Ontario. He came to Manitoba with his parents in the early 1880s. For a few years he was in the newspaper business then, in 1885, he moved to Virden where he resided for 40 years. There he engaged in the real estate and grain business and, for a number of years, was a member of the Winnipeg Grain Exchange.

He was first elected to the Manitoba Legislature for Virden in a by-election held in January 1909, necessitated by the death of J. H. Agnew. Simpson served two terms, being re-elected in 1910 but defeated in 1914. During the First World War, he served overseas as a Captain in the 184th Battalion. On 31 May 1892, he married Rhodella Armstrong Irwin. They had four children: Fred Irwin Simpson (1893-1917), Edith Francis Simpson (1895-?), Olive Mary Simpson (1897-?), and Harriet Mills Simpson (1902-?). He was president of the local St. Andrew's Society for many years and a Mason.

He died of heart disease at Vancouver, British Columbia on 29 January 1928. He was buried in Virden.

8257 Memorial Marker for Alexander Nicholson and Janet McIntosh: In memory of Alexander Nicholson died Nov 23 1876 [actually 1877] aged 86 Yrs also his wife Janet McIntosh died Jan 19 [actually 17], 1875 aged 70 [actually she was older] Natives of Inverness Scotland. [Note, while the memorial marker for Alexander Nicholson and Janet McIntosh state that they were "natives of Inverness Scotland," it is unlikely that Alexander was born in Inverness. His legal death record states he was born in Perthshire. A search of births of Alexander Nicholsons during the early 1790's show zero in Inverness and multiple for Perthshire. Furthermore the memorial marker states slightly incorrect dates and ages indicating that the memorial marker may have been placed some time afterward by adult children or grandchildren whose knowledge of their birth origins may have been faulty. Since it is not likely Alexander was a native of Inverness, perhaps his parents were. Furthermore, it is likely that his wife Janet McIntosh was a native of Inverness (as the McIntosh clan hails from there). Nicholson, Alexander (I6946)

8291 Mom has been reunited with Dad (the late Charles Alan) and will now take up watching over her three children, seven grandchildren, and six great grandchildren from heaven.
A long time resident of Richmond Hill, Mom will be remembered for her many volunteer positions that she held over the years, as well as being a loyal employee with several businesses in town.
Service to others made her happy, and the many stories of small kindnesses that people have shared with us recently has been wonderful. Friends may call at the MARSHALL FUNERAL HOME 10366 Yonge St. Richmond Hill on Monday, July 8 from 6-8 p.m. and Tuesday, July 9 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 10 at 2 p.m. in the funeral home Chapel. Rev. Matthew McMillan officiating.
In lieu of flowers, do something kind for another, or make a donation in Mom's name to the Canadian Cancer Society or Mackenzie Health. The palliative care nurses there truly are angels walking among us.
We love you Mom, and we will never forget you. Especially the Temagami Ketchup Incident, which will be told and retold for years to come.
Mary Ann and Chris, Catherine, Patricia and John.
