8723 O'Donell (Don) Trumper passed away unexpectedly from a short illness on Jan. 14, 2015, at the age of 88. He was born in Douglas, on April 30, 1926, to Otis and Vera Trumper.

Don, a family man, was a devoted, loving husband and proud, wonderful father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife Joanne, sons Kelly and Michael, daughter Colleen, stepson Gary Hansen and seven grandchildren. He loved and was loved by
in-laws Jim and Barbara Read, Ernie and Donna Douglas and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents and sister Patricia Murray of Casper.

As a member of the "Greatest Generation," he enlisted into the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1944 and crewed on the quick A-20 "skip bomber" in the South Pacific during World War II. After being honorably discharged, he returned home and found employment in Wyoming's oil industry. He moved to Tucson, Arizona, in 1955 seeking new opportunities and a warmer climate. In 1959, he returned briefly to Wyoming to marry the "love of his life," Joanne Read. They were married on July 15, 1959, and together returned to Tucson where they lovingly shared 55 happy and blissful years.

He was a 30-year employee of Tucson Rock & Sand/Tanner Companies and retired in 1985. In retirement, Don and Joanne enjoyed motorhoming, traveling from the Arctic Circle in Alaska to Nova Scotia and everywhere in between. They loved being together and seeing this great country. Recent years found the two of them still most deeply in love and contentedly enjoying family and home. The radio hobby, both CB and HAM, was an important part of his life. It was 1973 when KFR8871, the "Leapin' Lizard," was born into the CB Radio world. Later, with his desire to communicate with anyone and everyone around the world, Ham Radio Operator "KD7JBN" hit the airwaves. Over the course of four decades, with his friendly, lively banter, he touched the lives of thousands.

You could never meet a more warm, gentle and sincere man. His delightful smile and laugh and his twinkling blue eyes bespoke his loving and generous nature. He possessed a sharp mind to the very end and could discuss current events as easily as reminiscing about the good old days. As a true American patriot, he was very proud of his service to his country. He was a 64-year member of The American Legion, Post 8 in Douglas.

Cantril, Sudden Death of John Smith, a Mexican War Veteran
The death of John J. Smith Wednesday of last week was sudden and unexpected. The boys were not at home. About 8 o'clock he retired and requested Mrs. Smith to bring him a drink when she came up to bed. After finishing her evenings work she took the water and went up to the room. Approaching the bed she spoke to him and receiving no answer she took hold of him and tried to arouse him. Failing in this she started to a neighbor's and met the boys. When they returned it was but a few minutes till he passed away. Mr. Smith was a native of Ireland. He came to America when quite young. He was a soldier in the Mexican War. Enlisted at St. Louis in 1846. After his return he engaged in the business of horse merchant. With his land warrant he entered the Beatty farm and soon afterward came to this county where he has since resided. Before coming here he was married to Catherine Tully who survives him. Mr. Smith was industrious and enterprising. That he was a good citizen and held in high esteem was demonstrated by the attendance at his funeral, there being more than a hundred teams in the pocession. The sermon was preached by L.T. Hughes and he was laid to rest in the Hoskin cemetery.

Notes: John came to America with his brother Alexander and two sisters from Ireland in 1834 and landed at Quebec, Canada. He was a private of Capt. Noble G. Cunningham's Company, 6th Batt. Regiment Of Infantry, Missouri Volunteers. He enrolled on May 24, 1847 and was discharged Oct 10, 1848 at Independance, Missouri. He was 5 ft 10 inches with fair complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair.

J. M. Garland

One of the most prominent and worthy citizens of Ottawa has passed away in the person of Mr. John M. Garland, who died at 3 o'clock this morning at the family residence, 40 Nepean Street. The cause of death was paralysis, from which the deceased has suffered for several years. About four and a half years ago he had the first stroke, and a year later the second, since which time he has been an invalid. He was able, however to be around and yesterday was out driving., a favorite recreation with him. He seemed to be in a brighter mood yesterday than usual, and only a few minutes before passing away he joked with his nurse. about three o'clock the third and final stroke came, and almost immediately afterwards the spirit took its flight.

Mr. Garland was a man rich in good works, and he left a name that will long be cherished by the citizens of Ottawa. He was a charitably disposed man, and many were the acts of kindness that he performed. He was prominently identified with organised charity and rendered signal service in that regard. He was president for a number of years of the Perley Home, and when because of ill health he was no longer to take a prominent part in directing the affairs of the home, the board expressed its appreciation of his splendid services by making him honorary president. He had also been president of the Protestant Home for the aged.

In business circles Mr. Garland was much respected for his sterling integrity, for his energy and for his enterprise He was a member and an ex-president of the Ottawa Board of Trade, and a striking monument to Mr. Garland's executive ability is the present flourishing board.

Several years ago he reorganized the Board, which had been in a moribund state for some time, and became the first president.

Mr. Garland was the son of the late Patrick Garland, and was born near Ottawa 70 years and one month ago. When he was eleven years old his father died, and Mrs. Garland moved her family to western Ontario. When nineteen years old Mr. Garland entered into partnership with his uncle a Caledonia, Ontario, where the firm conducted a very successful general store for several years. In 1862 he decided to start an exclusive dry goods business in Ottawa, and formed in that year a partnership with the late Alexander Mutchmor. Mr. Mutchmor looked after the business in Ottawa while Mr. Garland did the buying, besides looking after his business in Ottawa, which he conducted until 1864.

In 1873 Mr. Garland stared by himself the wholesale business of which he was at the time of his death the senior partner.

In 1893 he erected the present handsome warehouse at the corner of Queen and O'Connor streets.

Mr. Garland was twice married, his first wife being Miss Isabel McKinnon, daughter of the late Neil McKinnon, and his second wife Mrs. Emily Maud McKinnon, daughter of the late Dr. McKinnon of Caledonia. He is survived by a widow, two daughters, the misses Garland, at home; a son, Mr. John L. Garland, of McLaren Street, and a member of the firm of John M.
