8966 | On Friday, November 01, 2019 (All Saints Day), Edra Marie Campbell, loving wife and mother passed away at the age of 88. Edra was born in Tomahawk, AB and was proud of her pioneering heritage. Her grandparents, the Browns, homesteaded in Tomahawk in 1905. Edra married her true love, Winnard Ramsey Campbell of Edmonton and they had four children: Debbie, Winnard, Jean & Donald. Smithfield was their community where she sat on the Hall Board, School Board and of course the Horse Club. Edra was well read and an avid reader of Canadian history, enjoying the fascinating stories of human spirit and endurance that built and settled Canada. She loved poetry and could recite endlessly, today her grandchildren and now great-grandchildren are reciting her favorites. In addition, Edra was a good artist with a focus on landscapes. Her paintings could also be found on cottage walls, garbage cans and outhouse doors. Like her mother, Edra was a member of the WI for years. She enjoyed travelling, particularly her coach tours with Win. Their long hot summers were spent at their cottage in Little Manitou Lake, SK. where they built a large circle of friends, spending many Saturday nights at "Danceland" in Watrous, SK. With a green thumb, she could rescue any plant and always had a large vegetable garden and enjoyed canning. She was fascinated with wildlife and nature, enjoying every little bird and waterfowl, identifying them by their songs and colours. Quilting and sewing were among her hobbies. Alongside Winnard, she was a creative renovator. They also built numerous real rock fireplaces, collecting and placing field stones, including the cairn at the Smithfield Cemetery. 8971 | On January 28, 1944, Duncan, along with his crew was flying in low visability and collided with a German aircraft. After a successful bombing raid, their Halifax Mk. II was returning to base. following the collision, the aircrasft lost control and crashed into a large building, catching fire. According to a German report, the collision occurred over Wittenberg Platz, Berlin, the plane dived into the eighth floor, only coming to rest on the fifth floor of the building, which was already devastated from previous raids. When the fire died out, eight bodies were recovered, all of which were unrecognizable. The bodies of Sergeant Jarvis and Sergeant Jandron's were identified from the crash site. Because the crashed Halifax aircraft had a crew of only seven men and eight bodies were recovered in the building, there was some question as to their identities. As such, the names of the remaining five men including Pilot Officer Bert Duncan were listed as missing in action for several months until, in September, 1944, they became officially presumed to have died on Active Service overseas. In a letter to the Department of National Defence, Bert's mother expressed doubt of her son's death and the possibility that he had been taken a prisoner of war, in an attempt to gain information from the officer. 944, Thursday June 8, The Almonte Gazette front page Officially Listed As Killed In ActionMr and Mrs E.H. Duncan Are Informed of Their Son's DeathMr and Mrs E.H. Duncan of Ramsay, received a letter last week from the R.C.A.F., Casualty Officer for Chief of Air Staff, Ottawa, stating that the body of their son, Warrant Officer 2 Robert MacIntosh Duncan had been positively identified. The message which was forwarded by the International Red Cross Society quoted German information that five members of the crew lost their lives. Two only R.M. Duncan and Sgt G.M. Jandron were positively identified. The other members of the crew are still classified as missing. Mr and Mrs Duncan were first informed that their son was missing on Jan 29 and their many friends sincerely regret that the long period of anxious waiting ends so sadly. "Bert" as he was usually known was 24 years of age and went overseas late in 1942. He enlisted in November, 1941, and trained at Manning Pool, Brandon and at Calgary and Regina. He received his wings at Dauphin. Besides his father and mother, he leaves six brothers, five of whom are in the armed services and three sisters. | Duncan, Pilot Flying Officer Robert Mcintosh "Bert" R. C. A. F. (I2889)

Then James moved his family to Warren County, Indiana across the river from where several of his sisters lived in Fountain County. In 1850 he was back in Ohio, living in Brown County, but in the early 1850's, James and all his children except George moved to Marion and Madison Counties in Iowa. They moved between Madison County, IA and Lancaster County, NE. John Greenleaf [James Greenfield]Hilton, senior, was the father of Judge Hilton of Cincinnati, Ohio, a democratic politician known at that time all over the country. Mr. Hilton was a widower and lived at the home of his son Charles(no records of a son so named). Mrs. Mason(Lavina Hilton) and Mrs. W. W. Dunham (Mary Elizabeth Hilton) were his daughters. The two Hiltons and Mr. Dunham were democrats. All were deeply religious, with the possible exception of Charles and his wife. A regular debating society was organized and held regular meetings at the Hilton residence. Mr. Hilton, senior, although aged and somewhat decrepit, was mentally bright and a fine speaker. He and Mason were the leading debaters, but others, including myself, regularly took part. (Origin of Olathe, Nebraska, pages 206-207) James was first buried in the Sand Hill Burial Place, Saltillo, Lancaster County, Nebraska. He was moved to the Roca Cemetery in 1891. note: 1850 Federal Census and 1856 Iowa State Census data indicate he was born in 1787-1788. Two sons, James and James R. were born between 1821 and 1831. They probably died in infancy or early childhood. | Hilton, James Greenfield (I31791)

The witnesses were Miss Florence Ramsbottom, sister of the bride, and Mr. W. M. Munro, brother of the groom. The groom's gift to the bride was a cabinet of silver and to the pianist, a gold ring set with amethyst. During the signing of the register, while Mrs. John Currie played, Miss Viola E.
