9529 | Peter & Martin Burns were twins. Peter was the caretaker at the Post Office in Almonte, Ontario, and he lived in the apartment above it with his wife Sarah, and their children, Mary, Jim and Carmel. The apartment had big windows overlooking Mill St, and even in their senior years, his children remembered how they counted the 52 steps up and down the steep staircase leading to it, as well as having carved their initials into one of those window frames. Peter navigated those stairs many times a day for 19 years, despite having a wooden leg (the result of an accident, see below), until he retired in 1928 at age 67. Shortly after his death, his wife Sarah wrote in her personal journal, "April 18, 1935. Peter Burns died. He had a kind and generous heart for everybody but such love and kindness for me and our family as I did not think existed. Lord have mercy on him." [H. Presley, g-grandson] ----------------------------------------------------------- The Almonte Gazette Almonte, Ontario, Canada Friday, April 27 1894, p. 1 A Fractured Leg. Messrs. Peter Burns, of Huntley, and Wm. Boyle, of this town, drove to Carleton Place on Sunday last, and while they were driving in the direction of the junction, a little boy named Hallinan handling the reins, the whistle of an engine caused the horse to wheel around and run away. The boy jumped out, as did Mr. Boyle, and both were not injured; but Mr. Burns remained in the rig for a time, trying to get hold of the lines, and when he did jump he fell on a knoll, breaking some of the bones above the ankle joint. The fracture was a bad one, one of the bones protruding through the skin. It will keep Mr. Burns a prisoner for some time, and he may have a stiff leg as a reminder of the accident. Mr. W. Warren, of this town, chased the runaway horse on his bicycle, and caught it at the Appleton turn. Neither horse nor rig was injured. Friday, May 4, 1894, p. 1 Mr. Peter Burns, whose leg was broken at Carleton Place last week, is now in an Ottawa hospital, where he is progressing favorably. It was feared that amputation would have to be performed, but we are glad to learn that that is now unnecessary. Friday, July 27, 1894, p. 1 We regret to learn that Mr. Peter Burns, of Huntley, who had his leg broken a month or two ago, has not been making as much progress as was expected towards recovery. Since the accident he has been in the Ottawa hospital, and it has been decided to amputate the broken limb today. NOTE: Peter's leg was amputated below the knee. He had a wooden leg for the remainder of his life, with the foot portion carved into the shape of a shoe. --------------------------------------------------------- The Ottawa Citizen Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Saturday, September 7, 1907, p. 19 Almonte, Sept. 6. Mr. and Mrs. Moulton left yesterday for Seattle where they will make their home in the future with their sons. Mr. Peter Burns has now taken Mr. Moulton's place as caretaker of the post office. ---------------------------------------------------------- The Almonte Gazette Almonte, Ontario, Canada Thursday, April 18, 1935, p. 4 Peter Burns The funeral of Peter Burns of Almonte, whose death occurred Friday last after a short illness, was held Monday morning to St. Mary's church where requiem mass was sung by Rev. Hickey. | Burns, Peter (I42845)

Hallowell, son of Joseph and Marcia Adams Hallowell, was born Oct. 16, 1855, near Strawberry Point, Iowa and died Sept. 16, 1928 at Fort Dodge, at the age of 72 years, 11 months. In 1867 the family came to Crawford county, settling about three miles northwest of Dow City. Here he grew to manhood, receiving his education in the public schools. It was here hat he engaged in farming, the occupation he followed through life. On May 17, 1882, he was united in marriage to Tillie G. Scott and to this union four children were born: Mrs. Ada Rule of Fort Dodge; Mrs. Inez Holcombe, Fayetteville, N. C.; Joseph E. of Dow City and Jane of Fort Dodge, all of whom survive him. Mr. Hallowell was one of the early settlers of Crawford county, having been a resident for 61 years. He entered into the life of the community and saw the county transformed from a prairie land to its present state of development. He was public spirited and interested in the upbuilding of community and schools. For a short term he served as township trustee and for many years was director of the Belltown school. He was quiet in many liberal in views, having been raised in the faith of the Universalist church. He was affiliated with the Mineral Spirit Camp of the Modern Woodman of America. His greatest interest centered about his home life and he was always happier when surrounded by his family and friends. Besides his wife, son and daughters, he leaves to mourn his death nine grandchildren, a number of nieces and nephews and many neighbors and friends. The funeral services were held at the M. E. church in Dow City, Tuesday, at 2:30 P.M., a number of friends being present to pay their last tribute of respect. Peter Campbell and Margaret n?e Campbell were married November 19, 1815, Killin, Perthshire. They were the parents of twelve known children. Peter and Margaret, with first born child Mary Campbell, immigrated to Canada in 1817 aboard the ship "Prompt". Note: Peter was baptized as Patrick McIllhuaish, Killin, Perthshire, Scotland. Surnames Campbell and McIllhuaish were used interchangeably within his paternal Campbell line in Scotland. St. Andrew's parish register, Perth, Ont. Peter Campbell Born: Scotland Residence: Drummond Died: 5 January 1848 Buried: 7 January 1848 _______ Peter Campbell, was born at Rein-a-Chullaig, Loch Tayside, Breadalbane, Perthshire, Scotland, and belonged to the Lochnell branch of the Campbell clan. One of his ancestors having taken part in the Jacobite rising in 1715, and thus having incurred the displeasure of Argyll, who was at the head of the Hanoverian forces, did not return to his native district, but placed himself under the protection of his other great kinsman, Breadalbane, who was neutral in that contest, and who assigned him the property called Rein-a-Chullaig. Peter Campbell was a man of high character and intelligence. He had for a time been a teacher in Scotland, and this gave him much influence with his Highland countrymen who accompanied him to Canada in 1817, and settled in the Bathurst district. He brought some money with him to Canada, and owned the first yoke of oxen in the settlement; although during the first season he had to carry a bag of flour on his back through the woods from Brockville, a distance of about fifty miles, having no road to follow but guided only by the blazes on the trees. He was chosen an elder of the first Presbyterian church, which was under the ministry of Rev. William Bell, shortly after his arrival in the country. But as he was born and bred in the Church of Scotland, he united with that branch of the Presbyterian communion as soon as it was established in Perth under the ministry of the late Rev. T. C. Wilson, of Dunkeld, Scotland, and was installed an elder in it too, which office he retained till his death in 1848.
