- ?b?William Sherman Baldwin?/b?
The Death occured at Winnipeg on Wednesday, June 12th, of William Sherman Baldwin, a former resident of the Clayton Section and of Carleton Place. Mr. Baldwin was born at North Augusta, 62 years ago, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Sherman Baldwin. As a young man he went to Union Hall where he was cheese maker for some time. He later made cheese at Portland. In 1893 he married Miss Margaret Adeline Scott of Almonte, who survives him. After leaving Portland, Mr. Baldwin gave up cheese making and opened a confectionary store in Carleton Place, which he conducted successfully for a number of years. In 1909 he went West and bought a section near Govan, Sask. After operating this farm for some time he sold it and retired to Govan to live. Mr. Baldwin was still a young man and he did not take kindly to a life of inactivity. Soon he saw an oportunity at Shoal Lake, Man, to go into the same kind of business that he owned at Carleton Place. He purchased a confectionary and bakery there ten years ago, which he conducted until a few years ago. His death followed an operation in a Winnipeg hospital. The remains were brought to Almonte, Saturday morning, a deputation of Oddfellows meeting the five o'clock train. The funeral was held Sunday at 2:30 from the home of Mr Baldwin's brother-in-law, W.E. Scott, Elgin Street, to the Auld Kirk Cemetery. Rev. C.D. McLellan of Bethany United Church conducting the services. The pallbearers were John Kirk, Walter Morton, Herb Coxford, and W.C. Pollock and James Williams and William Barber of Carleton Place. Mr. Baldwin's body was accompanied to Almonte by his widow and his niece Miss Doreen Alexander, a nurse-in-training in a Winnipeg hospital. He leaves a brother Levi and two sisters in the West. the brother was with him in his days at Union Hall. Mr. Baldwin will be recalled as a kindly man who was popular with all those who came in contact with him. He was a great curler and bowler. Among the many floral tributes were pieces from the officer and members of the Westminister United Church, Shoal Lake; I.O.O.F. Shoal Lake and Standard Brands of Winnipeg. There were also telegrams of sympathy from many friends in the West.
