  	1977, Wednesday January 5, The Almonte Gazette page 3 John Travers Sutherland J. Travers Sutherland passed away suddenly at Ottawa on December 26, 1976, in his 78th year. He was the eldest son of the late William E. Sutherland and Edna Travers of Union Hall. He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret Eccles and his brother William J. of Union Hall, Lloyd C. of Toronto and David B. of Ottawa are his surviving brothers. John C. Sutherland of Almonte is a cousin of the deceased. Travers received his education at Union Hall Public School and Almonte High School, where he played on one of the first rugby teams of that school. He received a B.A. Degree from Queen's University in 1944. Following graduation from Ottawa Normal School, he taught for the Ottawa Public School Board ? holding the position of principal at Lady Evelyn, Percy and Queen Elizabeth Public Schools. He was made a member of Mississippi Lodge A.F. & A. M. in 1923 and eventually became a Shriner as a member of the Rameses Temple, and a original member of Tunis Temple of Ottawa. During his lifetime, he was an ardent sports fan, and was one of the original southpaw pitchers of the famed Tigers' Baseball Team of Union Hall. The funeral was conducted from the chapel of Hulse and Playfair by Rev. Archdeacon Bradley on Tuesday December 28th, with entombment at the Auld Kirk Cemetery, Almonte.
