Mr. and Mrs. John E. Powers were honored Jan. 24 on the occasion of their 50th. wedding anniversary. The event was held in the auditorium of Calvary Baptist Church of which they are a member.
The Baptist Women and friends and hostesses and were in schargwe of the come and go tea through the afternoon. Mrs. Powers was presented with a golden corsage by Mrs. R.W. Williamson and Mr. Powers was presented with a bouttiniere by Mrs Herb Worden. The honoured couple were presented with a silver spoon by Mayor Hart, on behalf of the city council.
Golden streamers graced the auditorium and centred on a heart above Mr. and Mrs. Powers. Mrs. Norma Hamill, Mrs. Gertrude Mann, Mrs. Babe robertson and Mrs. Mille Whitehead as hostesses, welcomed the quests throughtout the afternoon. Presiding at the guest register were Linda Williamson and Julie Jeffrey. Pouring tea were Mrs. Donald McIvor, Mrs. Clifford Flemming, Mrs Bessie Butters and Mrs. Edna Mitchell.
During the afternoon Cliff Fleming read a sheaf of congratulatory telrgrams to Mr. and Mrs. Powers. Representatives of the Royal Canadian Legion and the Co9-op Association, of which Mr. Powers is a member also extended greetings. Mrs MacIvor and Mrs. Helen Davidson contributed a duet, "May God Be With You" with mrs. Jeffery presiding at the piano. Among guests attending were Mr. and Mrs. Auburn Pepper and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Knight.
John E. Powers of Weyburn and formerly Strathroy, Ont., and Irene Simpson of Ashton, Ont., were married Jan. 25, 1922 at Weyburn. John had come west in 1908 and in 1915 he enlisted in the services, returning in 1918 and farming until 1933, when he with E.T. Stinson, operated a grocery store. Later he went in partnership with The Worden Co., until his retirement in 1967. Mr and Mrs Powers now make their home on First Ave., N.W.
