  	WEYBURN COUPLE CELEBRATE 50TH. Mr. and Mrs. John E. Powers were honoured Jan 24 on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary. The event was held in the auditorium of Calvary Baptist Church, of which they are members. The Baptist Women and friends and hostesses were also in charge of the come and go tea through the afternoon. Mrs Powers was presented with a golden corsage by Mrs R. W. Williamson and Mr Powers was presented a boutonniere by Mrs Herb Worden. The honoured couple were presented with a silver spoon by Mayor Hart, on behalf of the city council. Golden streamers graced the auditorium and centered on a heart above Mr and Mrs Powers. Mrs Gertrude Mann, Mrs Babs Robertson and Mrs Millie Whitehead as hostesses, welcomed the guests throughout the afternoon. Presiding at the guest register were Linda Williamson and Julie Jeffery. Pouring tea were Mrs Donald MacIvor, Mrs Clifford Flemming, Mrs Bessie Butters and Mrs Edna Mitchell. During the afternoon Cliff Fleming read a sheaf of congratulatory telegrams to Mr and Mrs Powers. Representatives of the Royal Canadian Legion and the Co-op Association, of which Mr Powers is a member also extended greetings. Mrs MacIvor and Mrs Helen Davidson contributed a duet, "May God Be With You" with Mrs Jeffrey presiding at the piano. Among guests attending were Mr and Mrs Auburn Pepper and Mr and Mrs Bill Knight. John E Powers of Weyburn and formerly of Strathroy, Ont., and Irene Simpson of Ashton, Ont., were married Han 25, 1922 at Weyburn. John had come west in 1908 and in 1915 he enlisted in the services, returning in 1918 and farmed until 1933, when he along with E. T. Stinson, operated a grocery store. Later he went in partnership with the Worden Co., until his retirement in 1967. Mr and Mrs Powers now make their home on First Avenue N.W. here in Weyburn.

  (Research):Jack came west to R.M. Weyburn in 1908' He enlisted with the 135 Battalion and served in WW 1 until his discharged. He achived the rank of Corperal. Had a farm located south west of Weyburn were he farmed until 1933. He went into partnership with E.T Stinson in a Grocery store business know as Powers & Stinson.located in the Paterson block next to Hoshal Hardware. At a later date he went into partnership with "the Worden Co., a hardware business A Walter Zirk is listed as being located at 37 2nd. St. N.E. their residence in 1972 at their 50th. wedding anniversary was on 1st. Avenue N.W., Weyburn.
