The Town of Almonte and Ramsay township lost a good friend when Hugh Duncan died at Almonte General Hospital Saturday, May 27. He was 75.
Known best for his volunteer efforts with such groups as the local Lions Club and the Mississippi Textile Museum, Mr Duncan could often be seen organizing fundraising events around town.
"He was always a person of good ideas," recalled a friend Gerry Wheatley. "Hugh didn't hesitate to take an idea and run with it."
Whether it was selling raffle tickets or arranging speakers for Lions dinner meetings, he was always looked upon with respect for his volunteer spirit. On some occasions, he even worked for tow organizations at the same time. "When we were doing the (ice cream festival) lamb race, for instance, he was wearing both (Lions and Textile Museum) hats, Weatley said. His involvement in the Lions stretched back more than 20 years during which time he held every post, including two terms as president. Getting prizes for raffles - all of which to raise funds to support local projects - was another of Mr. Duncan's fortes. "It didn't bother him to go to one of the businesspeople," to ask for their participation in a particular project.
Herb Pragnell said Hugh's abilities as a fundraiser will be particularly missed at the textile museum. "He was the best ticket seller in the Valley, bar none," he said. "It helps to know everybody, Hugh was very well known and respected." Mr. Wheatley said Hugh was such an avid volunteer for club projects, his position will be difficult to fill. "Hugh was always out there...he did more than his part" he said. "We will miss him very much as a friend and fellow worker in the club."
Mr. Duncan was also well respected for his business sense. A farmer by trade, he developed one of the largest egg businesses in the area. Following his 'retirement' from the business in the late 1980's, Mr. Duncan also sold real estate for several years. Mr. Wheatley said.
In addition to the clubs, organizations and other local causes, Mr. Duncan took an active interest in the Almonte United Church. Rev Ted Colwell said he was, at one time, a church elder, but his greatest contribution came as a steward, working as treasurer of the congregation for 17 years. He sort of spearheaded the drive to make all the building completely accessible," he said of a project which included a new elevator and other renovations. "He was just very active and involved, and an appreciated member of the congregation," Rev Colwell said.
Mr. Duncan is survived by his wife Margaret, daughters Isabel (Herb) Metcalfe of Ottawa, Pennie (Patrick) Eagan of Ottawa, Kathy (Jonas) Vaskas of Bond Head, Christine (Darcy) Moses of Carleton Place, son Allan (Gina) of Ottawa, as well as 11 grandchildren.
He was survived by sisters Mrs Mabel Taber of Toronto, Mrs Muriel Redden of Kingston, Rae (Mrs Alan Lytle of Arnprior and brothers William (Shirley) of Toronto, Kenneth (Helen) of Almonte and Gordon (Mary) of Cobden. He was predeceased by four brothers Harold, Morden, Allan and Robert (Bert).
The funeral took place at Almonte United Church Tuesday, May 30, with Rev Ted Colwell officiating. He called the service a "joyful celebration" of Mr Duncan's life and included a tribute from his daughter Isabel. "He will be sorely missed" Rev Colwell said.
Hugh Duncan remembered as a good friend to his community.
