Last Tribute Is Paid Almonte Dentist Tuesday
Many At Funeral of Dr Thos R. Paterson Who Died On Sunday
Many of his fellow citizens and friends throughout the district paid a last tribute of respect. Tuesday afternoon, to Dr Thomas Robertson Paterson when his funeral was held from the family residence Elgin Street to the Auld Kirk Cemetery. Dr Paterson died on Sunday, June 23rd, following an illness of several months duration. He was in his 79th year and had continued to follow his profession as a dentist until ill health forced him to retire a short time prior to his death. Dr Paterson was born on a farm on the 6th line of Ramsay, Aug 31st, 1867. He was a son of the late William Paterson and Margaret Paterson. He was educated at S.S. 6 and 7 Ramsay; Almonte High School; Renfrew Model School and the University of Toronto. The Doctor graduated from the local high school in 1890 which was then under the principalship of the renowned P.C. McGregor.
Taught For A Time
Like many young men who went in for the professions in those days he spent a few years teaching school before enrolling at the university. After getting his certificate at model school in 1891 he taught at Waba and Galbraith until 1894. He then returned to High School for a year and entered the dental college of Toronto University from which he graduated in 1898. He had the degrees of L.D.S. from the Dental College; D.D.S. from Toronto University and D.D.C. Royal College of Dental Surgeons. He took a postgraduate course in Toronto in 1910. In 1907 Dr Paterson married Elizabeth Duncan of Ramsay Township who survives him together with two sons both of whom are teachers ? Wm S.D. of Kingston and T.H. Clarence of Smiths Falls. There are also two granddaughters, Lynn Marian and Anne Elizabeth.
Took Part In Sports
In his high school and college days the Doctor took a great interest in athletics including football, baseball, and the other games of that day. He was an ardent curler and bowler throughout his years in Almonte. He loved flowers and always took pride in his garden. He served on the Board of Education and later on the Town Council for a number of years. He was a member of several fraternal societies including the IOF; SOS; COCF and the IOOF. In religion he was a Presbyterian and an elder of the Almonte Church. During his long career as a dentist he delivered papers on various occasions to teacher's associations and others on care to the teeth and kindred subjects. In 1920 he carried out a survey of Lanark County children's teeth and made a report to the Ontario Government of that day. Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday by Rev A.J. Fowlie of the Almonte Presbyterian Church assisted by a former pastor, Rev E.E. Preston now of Vankleek Hill. Pallbearers were six nephews, namely Albert; Allan; Morden; Kenneth; Gordon and Hugh Duncan Among many floral tributes were pieces from the Session and W.M.S. of the church and from Osiris Lodge, AF & AM, Smiths Falls.
