  	Roy was one of twelve children born to Wickliff Newell and Mary Ellen Lawver. His father was a veteran of the Civil War, serving with the 4th Iowa Cavalry. After his discharge he moved to Nebraska to be a scout and guide for white settlers. During that time he married Roy's mother, Mary Ellen. His parents lived in Nebraska for many years and then moved to Colorado, where Roy was born. The family moved to Washington in 1899. Roy married Bessie Elsie Lyons. He died in 1941 in Everett, Snohomish County, Washington at the age of 47 years.
