(Red) Scharfe Survived Torpedoing, Killed in Holland Lieut. Pitman Elwood "Red" Scharfe, who survived the torpedoing of the S.S. "Nerissa" in 1941, was killed in action in Holland on January 6, according to word received recently by his sister, Miss Kathleen Scharfe, 561 Gilmour street. A member of a well-known Ottawa and Carp family, Lieut. Scharfe was a member of the permanent force, which he joined when he left school in 1928, being attached to the Canadian Corps of Signals. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ephraim Scharfe, of Carp and Ottawa, and was educated in the public and continuation schools at Carp. Following his enlistment he was stationed at Camp Borden. He is survived by four sisters, Kathleen G., of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, head office; Estelle Scharfe, registered nurse, both of Ottawa; Miss Mildred Scharfe, of St. Thomas, and Mrs. W. C. Cassel, Vancouver.
