  	Thomas Willoughby Garland was the son of Nicholas Garland and his wife Ann Willoughby. In the 1861 Census he is listed as a single school teacher, aged 47, residing with Mary Jane Garland, single aged 27, Clea Garland single aged 25, Hilda Garland single aged 22, James Garland single aged 20 and Ann Garland single aged 13, I. Goulbourn, Carleton County, Ontario. At the taking of the 1881 Census, Thomas aged 60, widowed and employed as a school teacher, was living with his brother John Garland aged 56, John's wife Ann aged 53, and their children Martha aged 26, Eliza aged 24, Nicholas aged 22, and Mary aged 18, in Goulbourn, Carleton County, Ontario. Thomas died at the Asylum for the Insane at Portsmouth, Frontenac County, Ontario. The cause of death listed on the death register was "exhaustion of mania."
