  	William Hurdman was the first born son of Charles Hurdman and his wife Margaret Graham. He married Sarah Sophia Smith, daughter of William Hurdman and his wife Sarah Wood on October 17, 1861. William and Sarah had 4 children: Bertha Hurdman born 1864 Wilhelmina Hurdman born 1864 Edith Augusta Hurdman born 1868 William Walter Hurdman born 1871 William began the family lumber business, Hurdman Brothers, in 1841 with brothers Charles and later younger brother Robert joined the firm. In 1873, William and his brother Robert moved to Gloucester Township settling near Junction Gore. William was the Reeve of the Township from 1877 to 1879. Hurdman Brothers built the Hurdman Bridge over the Rideau River. The two brothers purchased farm land in Gloucester Township and eventually both brothers were farming 200 to 300 acres each, using the most progressive methods of the day. William became director of two district agricultural societies. They won international awards for their horse breeding at the Centennial Exhibition of 1876 in Philadelphia. William also organized the Dominion Exhibition of 1879. When the Great Fire of 1900 wiped out the family's lumber mills at the Chaudi?re, the Hurdman brothers did not rebuild and decided to further enlarge their farming operations. William and Robert established the earliest and largest piggery in Gloucester Township. The area around their farms became known as Hurdman's Bridge.
