James Bryson Baird, five times elected to the Manitoba Legislature for Mountain Legislature for Mountain constituency and speaker of the House from 1916 to 1922 during the Liberal administration of Premier T. C. Norris, died here yesterday, aged 81. Born at Appleton, Ont., he came to Manitoba in 1879 and settled in this town, 30 miles west of Winnipeg. An ardent advocate of women's suffrage, he was the first person in Manitoba to petition the government fo women's voting rights. Twenty-five years later he presided in the Legislature when the suffrage bill was passed.
