Immigrated to Canada with his parents in 1821 (on board the Earl of Buckinghamshire) and lived in Ramsay Township, Upper Canada until 1835. He then launched out in the production and trade of the squared timber and logged timber in the Outauais Valley, in Lower Canada. He was also the postmaster of Fort Coulonge when it was established in 1857-1858.

George was the Mayor of the Mansfield and Pontefract Townships, 1855 to 1857 and 1862 to 1867 and again in 1877-1878. Prefect of the Pontiac County in 1862 and 1863. Elected as a Conservative Member of the Legislative Assembley for Pontiac in a by-election on October 17, 1857, but the Legislative Assembley was dissolved in 1858 before he could take his seat. Named representing division of Inkerman to the Legislative Council on November 2, 1867, oath given on December 27; on August 17, 1887 he resigned. George generally supported the Conservative Party.

George's other associations were as a Co founder in 1870 of Upper Otawa Improvement Company; a landowner with farms; one of the promoters and administrators of the Bank of Ottawa; the spokesman of Quebec limited Holder's Association attached to the government; Justice of the Peace of the District of Ottawa and a Member of Dalhousie Masonic Lodge of Ottawa.

One of the most successful and widely known pioneers of the Ottawa valley has passed away at Fort Coulonge on Saturday in the person of Hon. George Bryson. Deceased was a familiar figure in political life, while his extensive interests in the lumbering industry has made the family name a familiar one.

Hon. George Bryson was born in Paisley, Scotland in 1813 and came to Canada in 1821. His early years were spent in Ramsay, Lanark County, from which place he removed to Pontiac County, Quebec, where he resided up to the time of his death.

Deceased possessed to a marked degree many of those commendable characteristics that distinguish the Scotchman the world over. He was frugal, industrious, shrewd and cautious, and, while engaged in farming operations on first settling in the Pontiac, he early recognized that the wealth of forest land furnished a better field for his energy, and accordingly he turned his attention to the lumber industry. His foresight and faith were amply repaid, and so successful were his operations, that he soon became recognized as one of the leading operators in the Ottawa district. The late Mr. Bryson worked his limits for square timber principally, and old lumbermen still refer to the time, twenty years ago, when twelve and fifteen immense rafts were cut off the Bryson limits and floated down to Quebec in the one season for export to Great Britain.

In all his lumbering and other business ventures, the late Mr. Bryson's word was recognized as being equally as good as his bond, and in no instance was he known to take unfair advantage of another to further his own ends.

His lumbering operations were carried on along the Coulonge and Black Rivers and later along the Kippewa also. Mr. Bryson did much to develop these districts, to which end he also promoted the Pontiac and Pacific junction railway. The Town of Bryson, formerly known as Havelock, was renamed in honor of the Bryson family.

Deceased was also associated with other leading lumbermen in the formation of the Upper Ottawa Improvement Company, which did much to facilitate lumbering operations in the district watered by the Ottawa, Coulonge and other streams.

Mr. Bryson was also one of the founders of the Capital's successful monetary institutions, the Bank of Ottawa. He was a director of the bank, and regularly attended the meetings til recently. Deceased also took an active interest in municipal matters and for several years he held the office of mayor of Mansfield. He was also warden of Pontiac county for four consecutive terms.

In political life he was as successful and prominent as he was in business life. He was a moderate Conservative, and from the year 1867 to the year 1887, represented Pontiac in the Quebec legislature. In the latter year he retired in favor of his son, George, who at present represents the constituency.

Deceased had a family of four, three sons and a daughter. His sons were the late John W. Bryson, who represented Pontiac in the Dominion house from 1887 to the year of his death, 1896, George Bryson, representative of Pontiac in the Quebec legislature and James Bryson, a well-known and successful farmer of Bryson. Mrs. Albert Boulter of New York is the only daughter of the deceased. The family is also widely connected about Ottawa, where the sons have taken up extensive business interests, the inception of which was the work of the shrewd, conscientious and industrious Scotchman just deceased.

The funeral will be held tomorrow morning, and to give the many Ottawa and other friends of the family an opportunity of attending the obsequies of the deceased, a special train will be run leaving Aylmer at 8 am.

Almonte lost one of its oldest and most respected citizens on tuesday evening by the death of Mr Robert Bryson, of Union street, eight weeks after he was stricken with the illness that carried him away. It was of a dropsical nature, though the infirmities of age combined to make his recovery impossible. The late Mr Bryson was born in Paisley, Scotland, eighty-three years ago, and came to Canada with his parents (the late Mr and Mrs James Bryson) in 1821. Mr B. being a child of four years. they settled the same year on the old Bryson homestead in Ramsay - the farm now occupied by Mr John Neilson - and that was the home of Mr Bryson from that time until the year 1873, when, having amassed a competence, Mr and Mrs Bryson moved to Almonte, and have lived here ever since; so that Mr Bryson was a continuous resident of this neighbourhood for almost 80 years, witnessing and doing his share in the transformation of the primigenious forest into the present prosperous and well tilled farms and happy homes of this district. In ther forties and fifties deceased was engaged with his brother (the late Hon. Geo. Bryson, of Fort Coulonge) in the lumbering operations in this section, in which he was highly successful. In 1846 he was united in marriage with Janet Carswell, who survives him, and who during his illness was devotion itself. After fifty-four years of happy married life it is needless to say that Mrs Bryson feels her loss most keenly. They have no family. The late Mr Bryson was a Presbyterian in religion and a Liberal in politics. he was a genial turn, though quiet in disposition, and was a warm-hearted friend and a good neighbour. Like most of the pioneers, he delighted in recalling the early days, and was never tired talking over incidents that occured in this section before the advent of the telegraph line or the railway, and when newspapers were not in demand as they are today - the "good old days," when there was less of the hurry and bustle and more time for social intercourse than there is to-day. For years past he was largely a prisoner at home for physical reasons. A good citizen, his death is regretted by all who knew him. The funeral took place this (Thursday) afternoon, to the eighth line cemetery, and was largely attended. Rev Mr Mitchell conducted the services. Among those who came from a distance to attend the funeral were Hon Geo Bryson, Geo Bryson jun., Mrs Bryson and Mrs Boulter, of Fort Coulonge; Senator Templeman and Mrs Templeman, from Ottawa; Mrs Geo Carswell and sons, of Calumet Island; and Mrs Jas Carswell of Bryson.

The news of the death of Mrs Andrew Wilson, sen., of Appleton, will be learned with deep regret by many. Mrs Wilson had not enjoyed the most robust health for some time, and of late her condition was the cause of a good deal of anxiety to her friends. As the days passed it became evident that serious inroads were being made upon hervitality. Quietly and patiently she bore her illness until death brought her release on Wednesday last. The deceased was a daughter of the late James Bryson, and was born on board the ship on which her parents came to Canada in 1821. They settled on the 11th line of Ramsay, on the farm now owned by Mr John Neilson, where as Margaret Bryson, she lived until her marriage to Mr Wilson in 1843. Her home since then has been at Appleton - until a few years ago on the farm owned by Mr Wilson adjoining the village, and of later years in the village. Of a family of four children two are still living - James, on the farm, and Mary, who has been her mother's constant attendant during her declining years. Mrs Baird, of Almonte, is a sister of deceased, and the only surviving member of the family. Mrs Wilson was quiet and unassuming in her manner, but her uniformly kind disposition won for her many friends. She was a member of the Presbyterian church for many years, and her every day life was in full accord with the profession she made. The family and friends have the sympathy of the whole community in their bereavement. The funeral takes place today (Friday) to the eighth line cemetery, Ramsay.

Thomas Bryson followed his brothers George and Robert to Fort Coulonge. Initially Thomas farmed at Fort Coulonge but then ran the family store in town that sold items that the Brysons grew on their farms and imported.

Later in life Thomas was the Mayor of Mansfield - Pontiac between 1878 & 1881. He was also elected to the Quebec National Assembly but the Assembley was disolved before he could take his seat.

Thomas also acquired large land holdings in the Fort Coulonge area late in life.

Thomas Bryson (1826 ? January 4, 1882) was a Quebec merchant and political figure. He represented Pontiac in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec from 1881 to 1882 as a Conservative member.

He was born in Ramsay Township, Lanark County, Ontario the son of James Bryson and Jane Cochrane. He married Jane Fumerton around 1850. Bryson was mayor of Mansfield and Pontefract from 1878 to 1881. He operated a store at Fort Coulonge. He died in office in 1882 without ever taking his seat in the provincial legislature.

Bryson's brother George was also elected to the legislative assembly and was a member of the legislative council. His daughter Mary married his nephew John Bryson.

We regret to announce that Mr. Thomas Bryson, M.P.P. for Pontiac, died on Wednesday morning of inflamation of the bowels. Deceased was a man of good ability, and just entering on a useful career, as a representative, when he was taken down with the illness which has thus terminated fatally.
He was a brother of Hon. Geo. Bryson, of Coulonge, and Mr. Robt. Bryson, Almonte. He had been driving through the county purchasing grain, we believe, and took suddenly ill, and was carried into the house of Mr. James Carswell, at Bryson, where he remained until the time of his death.

Thomas married Jane Fumerton in 1853 in Fort Coulonge, Pontiac County, Quebec, Canada. The announcement of the death of Mrs John Baird on Sunday morning was a surprise and a shock to many. Mrs Baird had been about as usual on Friday, and very few knew of her serious illness until the news of her demise became known. The deceased, whose maiden name was Christina Bryson, was a daughter of the late James Bryson, of Ramsay, who lived on the farm on the eleventh line now occupied by Mr John Neilson, and upon which Mr and Mrs Robt Bryson lived for a number of years. She was married to Mr John Baird, of Appleton, and they lived in Appleton, where Mr Baird died about forty years ago. Mrs Baird came to Almonte about twenty-two years ago. Of the family born to them Robert and Jane (Mrs Cameron), are in Winnipeg, Margaret (Mrs D. Shaw), in Almonte, and James is in Pilot Mound. Hon Geo Bryson, of Coulonge, and Mr Robt Bryson, of Almonte, were brothers, and Mrs And. Wilson, sr., of Appleton was a sister of Mrs Baird. The deceased was the last of her father's family to pass away and she attained the age of 74 years. The funeral will take place on Friday at 11 o'clock, to the eighth line cemetery. The deceased was much loved and respected by all who know her, and many there are who have had occasion to call her blessed.

The village of Bryson in Quebec was named after John Bryson and incorporated in 1873. A fire in 1914 heavily damaged the village which then lay dormant for ten years.

John was a Conservative Member of Parliament for Pontiac and served between 1882 to 1891 and then again between 1892 until his death in 1896. Together with his brother he formed the firm of J. and G. Bryson.

Death of John Bryson - The Conservative M.P. For Pontiac Passes Away - But Forty-seven Years of Age - A Representative of the County Since 1882 - Sudden Attack of Disease on a Recent Lumbering Trip with Mr. Alexander Fraser

John Bryson, Conservative M.P. for Pontiac county, died at Fort Coulonge yesterday morning. The news was received in Ottawa with surprise and by many with deep regret. Few public men in the Ottawa Valley were better or more favorably known than the late Mr. Bryson. His death was very sudden, so sudden indeed that many friends did not know of his illness previous to the announcement of his death.

A week ago last Tuesday, accompanied by Mr. Fraser of this city, Mr. Bryson left on an inspection of his lumber business on the Coulonge river. Mr. Fraser speaking to The Journal this morning regarding the trip, stated that Mr. Bryson was in good health when they started. The distance to the limits was ninety miles from the mouth of the Coulonge river. After three days drive they reached the shanties. On Friday they went out and inspected the logs that had been cut, Mr. Bryson feeling in the best of spirits.

That evening Mr. Bryson took ill in the shanty. Saturday he was no better and Sunday he was worse. Fearing that Mr. Bryson was in the first stages of typhoid fever or some serious disease, Mr. Fraser says he urged him to start for home. Fixing Mr. Bryson up comfortably in a sleigh, the homeward journey was begun Tuesday morning. They reached Mr. Bryson's home at Fort Coulonge on Wednesday afternoon, at five o'clock. Medical attendance was at once procured. Dr. Klock, who was the medical attendant, saw that Mr. Bryson's illness was chronic and that death could not be averted, suffering as he was from heart-failure. Mr. Bryson lingered on until early yesterday morning when he expired.

Mr. Bryson was born Nov. 30, 1849, the second son of Hon. George Bryson. He went into the lumbering and farming business and did well, but always showed a liking for public work. He became Mayor of Mansfield in 1882, and in the same year was elected to parliament in the Conservative interest. The vote was Bryson, 1,047, N. McCuaig, Liberal, 931, and W. Somerville, Independent, 293. At the general election of 1887, he was again successful, defeating Thos. Craig, Liberal, by 1,681 to 966.

In 1891, there was another three cornered contest. Mr. Bryson was opposed by Thomas Murray, Liberal, and H. McLean, equal rights, and the vote resulted: Murray 1,100, Bryson 795, McLean 787. But, Mr. Murray, being unseated, Mr. Bryson defeated him in the by-election the following year.

Mr. Bryson was connected with a number of private enterprises. He was president of the Pontiac Telephone Company, and a director of the Crow River and Coulonge Boom Co.

He was twice married. His first wife, married in 1874, Miss Mary Bryson, daughter of Thomas Bryson, M.P.P., of Fort Coulonge, died some years back. Less than two years ago, Mr. Bryson married Miss White, of Montreal, who survives him, as well as two children, one boy seventeen years of age, and the other a girl aged seven months. One of Mr. Bryson's children, it will be remembered, was asphyxiated with her grandmother while visiting friends in Montreal. Mr. Bryson was a prominent Presbyterian.

The funeral will take place to-morrow afternoon, at two o'clock. A special train will leave Aylmer for Fort Coulonge on the arrival of the Ottawa 9:30 train tomorrow morning to attend the funeral of the late John Bryson, M.P., returning after the funeral.

Dean of the legislative council of Quebec, of which body he had been an honored member for half a century. Hon. George Bryson passed away Saturday at his residence, Spruceholm, Fort Coulonge, Quebec. The noted politician and businessman and outstanding citizen, not only of his native community or province, but of Canada, died in his 85th year. He was of a very philanthropic nature and made many contributions, not only to his own church, but to many other churches throughout the district. At all times he took a keen and active interest in the affairs of the Presbyterian Church, with which he had been connected since childhood. His passing will undoubtedly be the cause of keen regret by all who knew him.

He was not only a public servant of single ability, but also a keen businessman and at various times in his life was connected with many of the important commercial concerns in the Dominion. His business acumen was of the highest order and his advice on matters of moment was frequently sought by those high in the mercantile world.

Mr. Bryson was a true Quebecer, a man whose sympathies were strong toward both races in his native province. It was frequently stated by his colleagues in the legislative council, in which he served under five sovereigns, 11 lieutenants-governor and ten prime ministers, that he was responsible in no small measure for the warm feeling of cordiality which radiates through the Upper Chamber.

When he celebrated his 50th anniversary as a member of the council in November of last year, Hon. Hector Laferte, in a statement in the Upper House at that time, said that it was a remarkable event, not only in Quebec, but in Canada, and perhaps the whole empire. He said that it certainly falls to the lot of a few men to spend a lifetime in one legislative body.

In 1931 he was sworn in as minister without portfolio in the Tachereau administration, a post he held until 1934 when he resigned. He was chosen to represent the English minority in Quebec.

The last of the second generation of Bryson's on the Upper Ottawa, George Bryson was born on the Bryson farm at Fort Coulonge on July 20, 1852, the son of George Bryson of Paisley, Scotland and his wife, Robina Cobb of Glasgow, Scotland, both of whom had emigrated to Lanark County, Ontario in 1821. He received his primary education at Fort Coulonge, later attending colleges in Toronto and Montreal.

Following his graduation from college, he entered the lumber business with his brother, the late John Bryson, MP under the firm name of J. and G. Bryson. The lumber business was not entirely new to this young man, his father having made a notable contribution to that industry for many years previous. In 1909, he became a director of the Fraser-Bryson Company.

In banking circles he was an esteemed figure. His father was one of the founders of the Bank of Ottawa at the time of it's inception.. During it's early days this bank was known as the 'Lumberman's Bank' for the reason that four of its early directors were directly identified with the lumbering business, while others had direct interests in that line.

At the time of the merger of the Bank of Ottawa and the Bank of Nova Scotia in 1919, Hon. Mr. Bryson was its president, an office which he held from 1914. During the time he was president the bank made rapid strides, and at the time of the merger there were branch offices across Canada. Following the merger, Mr. Bryson was nominated to the office of director of the Bank of Nova Scotia, an office which he filled with honor during the balance of his life.

In 1887 he was appointed to the legislative council, a body upon which his father had served with distinction for many years. Mr. Bryson Sr. was a Liberal member in politics. His son was a Liberal and throughout his entire lifetime was an ardent and worthy supporter of the party.

In church circles, coming as he did from a long line of Presbyterians, his work was well-known. He gave generously of his time and talents to the many demands made upon him for charitable work and supported freely his home church, St. Andrew's, Fort Coulonge. Local politics also proved of great interest to Mr. Bryson, and he was a former mayor of Mansfield and Pontefract.

He married the late Helen Craig of Glen Walter, Ontario in 1875. Her father, James Craig, represented Glengarry County in the Ontario legislature at the time of Confederation. She predeceased him in 1933. Both Mr. and Mrs. Bryson enjoyed the utmost popularity not only in their own community, but wherever they were known.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. J.H. Francis of Indian Head, Sask, and Mrs. Owen C. Toller of Ottawa. A sister, Mrs. Albert Boulter, of Fort Coulonge, died in February. He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren; Miss Helen Cameron, who lived with Hon. Mr. Bryson at Fort Coulonge, J.B. Francis, Indian Head, Mrs. Curtis Bogart, Noranda, Miss Jean Moore, Master Bryson Moore, Mrs. Fred Bingham, Mrs. Arthur Henry Smith, Miss Nora Bryson, Master George Bryson, Miss Jean Bryson, Master George Toller, Master Eric Toller and Miss Joan Toller, all of Ottawa, one great-grandchild, Miss June Bingham, Ottawa and a son-in-law, Owen C. Toller of Ottawa.

The funeral will take place at 2 pm Tuesday to St. Andrew's Church, Fort Coulonge, and burial will be in the family plot there.

He was a keen sportsman and took great delight in hunting and fishing. He was an expert angler and whenever possible took the opportunity of going away with a few friends on a fishing trip. Another major interest in his life the Ottawa River Forest Protective Association, an organization which he served for many years as a director.

Mrs. Albert Boulter, sister of Hon. George Bryson and widely known throughout Canada for her charitable work and her benevolence to many societies, died this morning at her home in Fort Coulonge. She was in her 83rd year.


Although she had been ailing for more than three weeks, her passing came suddenly and will cause widespread regret in the Ottawa Valley, where her many years of helpful work will ever be remembered.


Born in Fort Coulonge, Que., Jennie Bryson, was a daughter of the late Hon. George Bryson and his wife, the former Robina Cobb, who came to Canada from Scotland in 1821. She had resided in Fort Coulonge all her life.


She was educated at Butte House, Montreal, and her marriage took place in 1896 to Albert Boulter, who predeceased her in 1900.


In memory of her late husband, she endowed a home in Jhansi, India, under the late Dr. Wilkie, and also another home for lepers, which was also set up in India.


Mrs. Boulter was a keen church worker and through her very active life her church was her main interest and she took an active part in the various organizations of St. Andrew's Presbyterian church, Fort Coulonge, of which she was a life member.


Her unselfishness and devotion to the societies with which she was actively engaged, will be sorely missed by those with whom she came in contact, her generosity and benevolence having endeared her in the hearts of many.


She was a life member of the Young Women's Christian Association, the Red Cross Society and the Bronson Memorial Home, Ottawa, and also of the Women's Missionary Society of the Presbyterian Church in Canada. She was also interested in the Salvation Army and was a great supporter of the Rosamond hospital, Almonte, Ont.


The funeral service will be held at her late home in Fort Coulonge, Que., on Thursday afternoon and interment will take place in Fort Coulonge cemetery.


Surviving in addition to her brother, Hon. George Bryson, MLC for Inkerman, are four nieces, Mrs. J.H. Francis, Indian Head, Saskatchewan; Mrs. Owen C. Toller, 221 Cobourg Street, Ottawa; Mrs. Gordon Berry and Miss Ethel Berry, both of Montreal, and a nephew, George T. Bryson, of Ottawa.

Special to The Citizen - Fort Coulonge, Que., Feb. 4 - The villagers of Fort Coulonge, coupled with the rest of the county and many others from outside points gathered at Fort Coulonge today to pay final tribute to the memory of the late Jennie Boulter, widow of Albert Boulter.


The late Mrs. Boulter, recognized as one of the largest contributors to charity and missions in the Dominion, having built, at her own expense, a hospital in India for the Presbyterian missions, and having been well noted in her own village of Fort Coulonge for the many works of charity she had done, was laid to rest in the family plot at Fort Coulonge this afternoon.


The late Mrs. Boulter, who was the only sister of Hon. George Bryson, MLC, for Inkerman, was in her 83rd year, and while she had not been in the best of health for some time, her sudden passing came as a shock to her many relatives and friends.


Born in Fort Coulonge, she was the daughter of the late Hon. Geo. Bryson and his wife, the former Robina Cobb, and had made her residence in Fort Coulonge all her life.


In 1886 she married the late Albert Boulter, who predeceased her in 1900, and it was in memory of her late husband that she had built the hospital in India and that she also established another home for lepers in India. She was a life member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian church at Fort Coulonge, also a member of the Ladies Aid on the WMS.


Among the many floral tributes received were wreaths from the Women's Missionary Society of St. Andrew's Presbyterian church at Fort Coulonge; the Ladies Aid; the Beaver Club and the Willing Workers Band of the same church, also one from the president of the Bank of Nova Scotia.


The funeral service was held from her late home at Fort Coulonge, with a private service at 10 o'clock this morning in charge of the Rev. Mr. Dann, pastor of St. Andrew's church, assisted by the Very Rev. Dr. Robert Johnston and the Rev. Major Logan-Veneta, MC. At the service held at 2 pm, the Rev. Dann, assisted by Rev. Robert Good of Ottawa, officiated at the graveside. Other clergy present were Rev. Mr. Lowery of Hull and Rev. Wm. Patterson of Westboro, also the Rev. Canon Quartermain of Renfrew.


In the lengthy cortege were noticed the Rev. and Mrs. McAffee and Miss Derenz of Arnprior; N.S. Robertson of Arnprior; Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Carswell of Renfrew; Fred Bingham, Dr. C.N. The deceased was born here, being a daughter of the late Andrew Wilson, and the last surviving member of her family. She was a lady who was always active in social and church work and was widely known and esteemed, and her sudden demise is a surprise to her many friends and deeply lamented. The funeral took place Thursday afternoon.

Mr James Wilson Killed
Not only Appleton district but the surrounding community in a wide circle was appalled on Wednesday when the intelligence passed from one person to another, that James Wilson had been killed. How the accident happened is not known for certain, but it is supposed he was unhitching his team in the barn about noon and that one of the horses had kicked him, and when found one side of his head was crushed in. Mrs Wilson heard an unusual noise in the barn, and upon going out to ascertain the cause she found her husband unconscious, and in a short time he passed away. The late Mr Wilson was a son of the late Andrew Wilson, sr., and was about 56 years of age. He was married about 22 years ago to Miss Mary Snedden, daughter of the late James Snedden, and to them five children were born. Of these Christina is teaching at Rosetta, Maggie is bookkeeper in Mr J.A. McGregor's store at Appleton, Bryson and Janet are attending the high school at Carleton Place, and John, the youngest, is at home. Mrs Wilson is still living, as is also a sister of the deceased, Miss Mary Wilson, at Appleton. The late Mr Wilson was a man of a quiet and retiring disposition, but was highly respected by all who knew him ? those knowing him best holding him in highest esteem. He was a good neighbour, a staunch friend and a man of sterling probity and uprightness in all his dealings. He was a member of the Presbyterian church, and was a staunch Liberal in politics. The funeral will take place on Friday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock from his late home to the Presbyterian cemetery on the eighth line of Ramsay. The sad occurrence has called forth sincere and heartfelt sympathy for the family and friends so sorely bereaved.

As sleep to tired eyes, death came to Margaret Robina Baird, beloved wife of Mr Daniel Shaw, on Monday of this week. For some years the inevitable outcome of her malady, paralysis, had been apparent, but with the calm confidence of one who enters on a strange journey after long preparation, she patiently awaited the final summons. The assembling of friends to her side in the last hours is a silent tribute to the wonderful power of the kindly heart to make and hold friendships. Mrs Shaw was possessed of one of those rare temperaments which spends themselves in the service of others. "This women was full of good works and almsdeeds which she did." The late Mrs Shaw was a daughter of the late Jas Baird and was born near Appleton fifty-three years ago. About twenty-five years ago after her father's death, with her mother she moved to Almonte and has since resided here. Her mother passed away about four years ago. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two brothers, Jas B. and Robt of Pilot Mound, and one sister, Mrs James M. Cameron of Winnipeg. During her residence in Almonte Mrs Shaw had accumulated a large fund of affection from all those with whom she came in contact in her quiet, kindly way. She was a faithful member of St Andrew;s church. The funeral took place this (Thursday) afternoon, interment being made in the eighth line cemetery.

Pilot Mound, Man. (CP) -?/b? James Bryson Baird, five times elected to the Manitoba Legislature for Mountain Legislature for Mountain constituency and speaker of the House from 1916 to 1922 during the Liberal administration of Premier T. C. Norris, died here yesterday, aged 81.
Born at Appleton, Ont., he came to Manitoba in 1879 and settled in this town, 30 miles west of Winnipeg. An ardent advocate of women's suffrage, he was the first person in Manitoba to petition the government fo women's voting rights. Twenty-five years later he presided in the Legislature when the suffrage bill was passed.

Ottawa Citizen - February 21, 1942 - George J. Bryson, Prominent Citizen, Passes in Capital - Widely Known Member of Ottawa Valley Family Dies After Long Illness


George J. Bryson, a member of a prominently known Ottawa Valley family, died at his home, 300 Cooper Street, this morning at the age of 64 years. Mr. Bryson, who had been in indifferent health for two years, was confined to bed for the past six months.


A son of the late John Bryson, a former member of Parliament for Pontiac, and of Mary C. Bryson, he was born at Fort Coulonge in November, 1877, and spent the earlier part of his life there, having been engaged in the lumbering business with his father.


Coming to Ottawa 40 years ago after having received his education in Lennoxville and Belleville, he was a keen sportsman and athlete. Football, lacrosse and hockey were his favorite sports, and after his playing days were over, he followed with enthusiasm the fortunes of the old Silver Seven hockey team, the Capital Lacrosse Club, and the Ottawa Rough Riders Football Club. He was a member of the executive of the latter club.


While in Ottawa, Mr. Bryson looked after the lumbering interests of the lumber company which bore his father's name, and was also engaged in real estate operations. He had a host pf friends both in the Capital and throughout the Ottawa Valley.


Mr. Bryson was the only surviving charter member of the Laurentian Club. Prominent in social and fraternal organizations, he was a member of the Royal Ottawa Golf Club, the Rideau Club and Country Club. He worshipped at St. Andrew's Presbyterian church.


His passing will be widely mourned by hundreds of residents of Ottawa and district who were aided by his charitable contributions. Mr. Bryson went about his philanthropic work quietly and his kindly acts won him many friends.


Surviving are his widow; two aunts, Mrs. James W. Hennessy and Mrs. A.H. Leggo, both of Fort Coulonge, Que., and two step-sisters, Mrs. Gordon Berry and Miss Ethel Bryson, both of Montreal.


The funeral will be held from the parlors of George H. Rogers, Limited, 172 Elgin Street, to Fort Coulonge, for burial. The date and time have not yet been arranged.

?/b?One of the saddest enquiries that has ever come before a coronor's jury in this city was the inquest yesterday on the bodies of Mrs. Thomas Bryson, of Fort Coulonge near Ottawa, and her 11-year -old granddaughter. The deceased and her grnd-child arrived in the city on Monday evening and at once went to the residence of Mrs. White, 388 Mountain street, where they had been expected as guests. At 11 o'clock in the evening both retired, and when morning came they were dead. Investigation at the inquest showed that the deaths were due to asphyxiation through a leaking gas cock. The evidence showed that the cock was loose and turned completely around, and the presumption was that the deceased lady, after turning the gas off, had turned it on again. The Jury decided that the deaths were purely accidental, and returned a vertict to that effect, with no blame attached to the residents of the house. the deceased is a relative of Hon. George Bryson, and of Mr. John Bryson, M.P for Pontiac.

The bodies of Mrs Thomas Bryson and her grandchild, of Fort Coulonge, who were asphyxiated in Montreal last Monday night were taken to Fort Coulonge for interment.

The story of how Mrs. Bryson and her grandchild met their death is peculiarly sad. Mrs. Bryson who is 60 years of age, with her grandchild, 11 years old, were visiting a friend, Mrs. White at 388 Mountain street, Montreal. Mrs Bryson, when she retired about 11 o'clock, was in the best of health and spirits. In order to prevent any accident, Mrs. White went to Mrs Bryson's room and showed her how to turn off the gas. This was the last time Mrs. Bryson was seen alive. At 6 o'clock next morning Mrs. White and her daughter prepared breakfast, expecting that their guests would be down about 7 o'clock. Leaving her daughter and her son, Mr. R. White, of the Royal Electric Co. to wait breakfast for Mrs. Bryson and her grandchild, Mrs. White left the house for half an hour to make some small purchases. When she returned shortly after 7 o'clock she was told by her daughter that Mrs. Bryson and her grandchild were still in their room. "Well, they must be tired and we shall let them sleep a little longer," replied Mrs. White. The time wore on, yet not a sound was heard from Mrs. Bryson's room. Finally, a little after 8 o'clock, Mrs. White went up to the room, knocked at the door several times and called her friend's name but got no response. Her fears were then aroused and she called to her son and daughter to come and see if anything was wrong. Mr. White opened the door in great agitation and rushed into the room, followed by his mother and sister. The room was full of gas, which for an instant made them draw back half choked. A heartrending picture met their view. Lying on the bed, dead, were Mrs. Bryson and her grandchild. The little one's head lay on her grandmother's arm in a restful manner; she looked just as if asleep. Mrs. White ran over to the bedside, took the little one's hand and Mrs. Bryson's in her own, and then cried out in terrified tones, "They are cold. They are both dead." Mr. White ran at once for Dr. Cameron, but medical aid could do nothing. The doctor examined the room and found that the gas had not altogether been turned off. An inquest was held and the jury brought in a verdict of accidental death. Investigations showed that the deaths were due to a leaking gas cock which was loose and had been turned completely around. It is supposed old Mrs. Bryson turned the gas off and then accidently turned it on again. The late Mrs. Bryson is mother-in-law of Mr John Bryson, M.P., and the child his only daughter. The child was about eleven years of age, and very active. Her mother died about a year ago.

The funeral was one of the largest ever seen in Bryson evincing the deep sympathy felt for the family in their double bereavement.
