Sooner or later death comes to us all, but to very few is given such a fullness of years as was enjoyed by Mr. James Stewart, one of Ramsay's pioneers who died on Thursday of last week, at the ripe old age of 87 years. Born in
Glasgow, Scotland, in the opening of the present century, he spent the earlier years of his life there as clerk in a warehouse. When about 21 years of age he emigrated to this country, coming as a passenger on the ship "Buchanan" in 1821, working his passage out by acting as clerk on the vessel. On landing he took up land, the property secured being that lot which includes "the Point," opposite Burnside, but this he afterward exchanged for the farm on which his life was spent. Being one of the first settlers in the township, he endured all the privations incident to a life in the backwoods, and many were the tales he could tell of the hardship suffered and obstacles overcome by himself and his wife (Helen Brown) in their efforts to establish a home for themselves on Canadian soil. While the Rideau canal was being built his spare time between seeding and harvest was spent working on it. On one occasion while away his wife disposed of a few bushels of surplus wheat they had for a dollar a bushel, the money received being the nucleus of it after years grew to be a comfortable income., and which was enjoyed by them until about ten years ago, when his wife died. The deceased was a man of sterling worth, whose word was as his bond, and whose sympathy and assistance were never withheld from those who were deserving it, and many are the kind and grateful memories that still linger in the hearts of those who received bounty at his hand. In the early years of Presbyterianism in Ramsay he cast in his lot with that denomination, and for many years was a member and elder of the old church at the eighth line,. when St. Andrew's church was established in Almonte he was one of the first elders appointed, a position which he held up to the time of his death, discharging the duties of that office with the same Christian earnestness and zeal which characterized his whole Christian life, preaching more eloquently than with word by his quiet and consistent walk in the footsteps of that Master whom he delighted to serve, and whose consolations he so much enjoyed during his declining years. In politics he was a staunch Reformer, but never took an active part in public matters. He was a man of robust constitution, and up to a few days of his death was going about as usual, attending to little duties around the house, but on Tuesday he was prostrated by what seemed to be a general breaking down of his system., and on Thursday, to him, the welcome summons came, bidding him join the bright throng above. The funeral on Saturday was very largely attended, evincing the high esteem in which the deceased was held by all who knew him.

Mrs Buchanan Paterson Dead
About fours years ago, Mrs Buchanan Paterson, of Ramsay, was attacked with la grippe, from which she never fully recovered, although she was able to be around most of the time. Two weeks ago she went to visit her daughter, Mrs Jas Arthur, near Rosebank, and on Sunday last was taken seriously ill, but lingered on till Wednesday, when she quietly dropped into that sleep from which there is no awaking. The deceased was a daughter of the late James Stewart, of Ramsay, and sister to Mr. Robt. Stewart, of the seventh line, and was born in Ramsay, where she spent her whole life. She was married to Mr Buchanan Paterson, who died about fifteen years ago, the union being blessed with four children ? one son and three daughters ? all of whom are living. The deceased was of a quiet disposition, but will be remembered by many for her kindness of heart and her readiness to aid those who were in trouble of any kind.

Nearly six years ago Mr Geo Stewart, of the seventh line, Ramsay, suffered from a slight shock of paralysis but from this he recovered to some extent, though he never regained his former activity and vigour. About a year later he suffered from a recurrence of the trouble, but much more severely, and for about five years he had been confined to bed, unable to speak intelligibly, and with little power to help himself in any way. But through all these years he patiently bore his suffering until Sunday last when death resulted from the effects of the trouble. The deceased was born and spent his whole life on the farm upon which he died, his father, the late James Stewart (who in his lifetime was a respected elder of St Andrew's church), having also lived and died upon the same farm. Mr Stewart wife predeceased him several years. Of the family there are six daughters ? Mrs Jas Laronde, Mrs D Laronde, Mrs Rivett and Miss Maggie, at Arnprior, and Misses Minnie and Aggie at home ? and one son, James. at home. Of the brothers and sisters of the deceased, Robert lives in Ramsay, John in Ross township, in Renfrew county, Mary (Mrs Jas Stewart), is in Manitoba, and Agnes, also married, is in western Ontario. Another sister, Isabella, (Mrs Buchanan Paterson), is dead. The funeral took place on Tuesday, and notwithstanding that farmers were so busy the funeral was a very large one. The remains were interred in the Presbyterian cemetery at Clayton. The deceased was member of the Clayton Presbyterian church and was much respected for many excellent qualities of both head and heart.

?/b?Through an unfortunate misunderstanding of information given the Gazette last week, the obituary notice of the late George Stewart was inaccurate in some particulars. The late Mr Stewart was born on the farm on the seventh line of Ramsay on which his father, the late Jas Stewart, resided, and on which Mr Robt Stewart, now lives. He afterward moved onto the farm on the sixth line on which his grandfather, Mr Brown, had lived, and here he resided until his death. About six years ago he suffered from a slight stroke of paralysis, and about a year later from another one, which affected his speech to some extent, making it difficult for him to speak intelligibly, but his was able to be around and take a share in the work on the farm, until a short time before his decease, when he suffered from a recurrence of the disease which resulted in his health. (Mr Stewart wife predeceased him several years. Of the family there are six living daughters ? Mrs Jas Laronde, Mrs D. Laronde, Mrs Rivett and Miss Annie, at Arnprior, and Misses Minnie and Aggie, at home ? one son, James, at home. Robert Stewart
There passed away on Saturday morning, Jan 4th, 1936, a well known and highly respected resident of Ramsay Township in the person of Robert Stewart. Deceased was the youngest son of the late James Stewart and his wife Ellen Brown, and was the last of ten children, five boys and five girls. He was born August 17th, 1844, on the farm where his son Andrew now lives. Mr Stewart was twice married, his first wife was Agnes Stewart whom he married in 1869. To this union were born eight children, two sons and six daughters, namely, Agnes, Mrs David Fender, Pakenham; Ellen, Mrs Chas W. Bowes, Dundurn; Marion, Mrs Chas D. Young, Issaquah, Wash; Belle, Mrs J.K. Houston, Winnipeg; James, deceased; Margaret, Mrs J.B. Jack, deceased; Andrew on the homestead and Mayme, Mrs Geo W. Boal of Pakenham. His second wife was Jessie Rath who died six years ago. To them was born one daughter, Roberta, Mrs R.S. Jack of Ramsay. Mr Stewart was the eldest of a family of five generations. He leaves 24 grandchildren, 39 great grand-children and three great great-grandchildren. The funeral which was largely attended was held on Sunday, Jan 5th, from the home of Mr and Mrs David Fender. Rev G.A. Goth of Pakenham, preached a very impressive funeral sermon. The pallbearers were R.M. Boal, George Boal, J.S. Paterson, J.R. Reid, Russell Innis and Gordon Boal. Floral tributes included a wreath from the family.

Mrs. Samuel Drummond

This district has once more to record the passing of another old resident in the person of Mrs. Samuel Drummond. Deceased whose maiden name was Mary Patterson, was the daughter of the late Buchanan Patterson and Isabella Stewart of Clayton. She had been in poor health for about a year. Last Thursday evening, Jan. 27th, she passed away very suddenly. Her husband predeceased her by about 10 years. She is survived by two sons and two daughters, Howard and Ralph and Misses Ada and Agnes. Also surviving is one sister Mrs. Lawrence Naismith in the West. Mrs. Drummond was a kind and tender mother and a splendid neighbor. She will be greatly missed by a large circle of friends. There is also left to mourn her loss, one stepson, Harvey of Ottawa; and two step-daughters, Eva, Mrs. Melville Paul of Almonte, and Mrs. Clifford Green of Carp. The funeral on Saturday, was largely attended. Rev. W. J. Scott of Bethany United Church, Almonte, conducted the service. The pallbearers were Messrs. Edward and Luke Kennedy, D. J. Drummond and Chas. Brydges, Victor Kellough and Wilfred Patterson. Interment was in the Auld Kirk cemetery. Numerous floral tributes were in evidence.

Mr James Stewart Paterson
Following an illness of several months the death occurred on Monday, Oct 11th, of Mr James Stewart Paterson, aged 68 years, at his home on the 6th line of Ramsay. Mr Paterson was born on Sept 1st, 1869, a son of Buchanan Paterson and his wife Isabella Stewart. He is survived by his wife, the former Jessie McArthur whom he married on March 2nd, 1898; three sons Harvey, Stewart and Wilbert; three sisters, Mrs Jas McArthur of Blakeney; Mrs Sam Drummond of Almonte of Almonte; Mrs Lawrence Naismith of Rosetown, Sask., and two grandchildren. Mr Paterson farmed all his life. He was at one time a member of the township council and served on the school board of his section for 21 years. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon to the Auld Kirk Cemetery with Mr Fred Rice, pastor of the Clayton and Blakeney charges, officiating at the home and grave. The pallbearers were: George Stewart, Andrew Stewart, cousins of deceased, Archie McArthur and John R. Reid.

Last Friday Mr James Stewart of Ramsay was bought to the R.M. hospital suffering from pneumonia, with little hope for recovery, and on Wednesday evening the unequal contest ended. A very sad feature of the sad occurrence is that his wife died only bout two months ago, and now the four little children, who were then left motherless, are now left fatherless as well. The late Mrs Stewart was a son of the late George Stewart and was in his 45th year. He was married to a daughter of Mr and Mrs Daniel Munro of Clayton, who died the end of February last. There are four children left, the youngest about a year-and-a-half old, and the eldest about six years. The funeral will take place on Friday at 2.30 o'clock to the eighth line cemetery.

She was married about five years ago and had been living at Braeside, whence the remains were brought to her father's home on Wednesday, the funeral taking place to the eighth line cemetery on Thursday afternoon. The funeral of Andrew Stewart took place May 2 from the Fleming Bros. Funeral Home, Lake Avenue West, where Rev. H. E. Parsons conducted the service. Interment was made at Auld Kirk Cemetery, Almonte. Mr. Stewart died in Memorial Hospital on May 18. He had resided on John Street. He was born in Almonte, a son of the late Robert Stewart and his wife, Agnes Yuill. Mr. Stewart was a successful farmer in Ramsay Township nearly all his life. He attended church in Almonte and was a member of Mississippi Lodge, Almonte. He is survived by his wife, the former Margaret L. (Medical):Notes from Kathleen English: Ruby lived in Vancouver, went to live with aunt Kate in Winnipeg after grandmother's death. She did not get along with her mother and sister. She was about 21 at the time. Isabel and Mary (aunts) sent her to business school and got her a job in the business office of a small local bank. When my mother (Isabel Stewart) died in 1917, Aunt Kate to come to Kathleen's home but would only do so if Ruby came as well. She was not easy to live with! She adored aunt Kate and wanted to make her decisions for her. Moved to an apt with Aunt Kate in 1925 when Kathleen English's father remarried. Aunt Kate died in 1932 and Ruby went to live with Aunt Mary, Uncle Jack having died. She lived there even after aunt Mary died until she became senile and was hospitalized.

After her death, Edgar and Kathleen shared equally in the value of the house (with Ruby) but they turned over their share to Ruby. The district had gone downhill and they wanted to sell but Ruby rented it and kept pouring money into it until she finally had to realize the futility of t it.

moved from home of 26 years in Westfield to Leisure Village in Lakewood NJ after Ray died.
In Oct 1979 moved to Broadmead, a complete care community, to be closer to Alice, about an hour's drive, non denominational facility run by the Quakers of Stony Run meeting in Baltimore.

The funeral was held Tuesday morning, April 11, of Mrs Wm. M. Sutherland who died the preceding Sunday in the hospital at London, Ont. She had been in ill health for nine years. The former Millicent Arthur she was born near Blakeney, the daughter of the late James Arthur and Ellen Paterson. Twenty-one years ago she was married to William M. Sutherland in Ottawa and resided there for several years. He died in 1934. In her early years she was also a dedicated school teacher. The angel of death came with almost startling suddenness to Miss Elsie Drummond early on Tueday morning. During the flu epidemiclast fall she contracted the disease and never fully recovered. Acouple of weeks ago she suffered a relapse and was thought to be making good recovery when she was taken suddenly worse and passed away before medical aid could be obtained. The late Miss Drummond was a daughter of Mr and Mrs S Drummond of Ramsay, and was in her eighteenth year. Besides the sorrowing parents, seven brothers and sisters are left to mourn her early demise. these are Mrs C Greene, Kinburn; Misses Eva, Ada, Agnes and Masters Howard and Ralph at home; Harvey, of Smiths Falls; Wilbert, of Almonte. The funeral on Thursday was to the Presbyterian cemetery at the eighth line and was very largely attended by those wishing to show their sympathy for the bereaved ones. Rev S.G. Brown conducted the services at the home and the grave.

Howard Drummond

The funeral of the late Howard Drummond was held on Saturday, March 28th, at 3:30 p.m. , from the Comba Funeral Home to the Auld Kirk Cemetery.

Rev H.C. Wolfraim of Almonte United Church, of which deceased was a member, conducted the service.

Mr Drummond died suddenly on his farm on the 12th line of Ramsay Township, on Wednesday, March 25th, while engaged in cutting brush at the edge of a field. Evcept for an arthritic condition which had troubled him for the past five years, he was not known to be in ill health and his sudden passing came as a great shock to his family and friends.

A son of the late Sam Drummond and his wife, Mary Paterson, he was born in 1903 on the farm where he spent his life.

He leaves two brothers two brothers and two sisters: Ralph of Corkery, Agnes at home, Harvey L of Ottawa, Iva, Mrs Clifford Green of Arnprior, and Ada at home. A brother, Wilbur L, and two sisters, Eva, Mrs Melville Paul and Elsie predeceased him.

The pallbearers were: Jack Command, Leonard Kennedy, Angus Kennedy, Jos Madden, Stewart Paterson and Victor Kellough.

Among the beautiful floral tributes were sprays from the 12th line neighbours, S.S. No 12 Ramsay, and the Appleton W.I.

Wilbert Paterson
Wilbert Erwin Paterson died at the Almonte General Hospital June 6, 1988, after a three month illness. He was 83. Mr Paterson was a life-long resident of Ramsay Township having been born in that township on April 11, 1905, a son to the late James Paterson and Jessie McArthur. He was educated at SS No 6 and 7 in Ramsay Township. On April 9, 1948, he married the late Katherine Peacock in Guthrie United Church in Clayton. Mr Paterson was a member of the Orange Lodge. He is survived by his nephew Delmer Paterson of RR 1 Almonte and his nieces Mary Connolly of Almonte, Marjorie Weir of RR 2 Almonte and Frances Cooper of Stittsville. The funeral was conducted at the Comba Funeral Home, Almonte, Friday, for the late Mrs Gladys Lillian Julian, who died Wednesday last in a Kingston hospital, in her 71st year. The Rev W.W.H. Baird, Almonte, conducted the service. Born July 9, 1897, in Arnprior, she was the daughter of the late James Rivett and his wife, the late former Margaret Stewart. She was educated in Arnprior and married the late James Julian in Arnprior, January 14, 1922. Mrs Julian was a member of the Presbyterian Church. She is survives by three sons, Arnold, Carleton Place. Derwood, Hamilton, and Howard, Almonte, and three daughters; Dorothy (Mrs Bruce Commerford) Meadford; Marjorie (Mrs Norman Cochrane), Carleton Place, and Violet (Mrs Melville Byers) Smiths Falls. Two brothers Lorne and Russell Rivett, both of Arnprior survive, and one sister Violet, Arnprior. There are several grandchildren. Interment was in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Almonte. Attending the service from Arnprior were Mr and Mrs Lorne Rivett, Mr and Mrs Russell Rivett, Mr and Mrs Ted Brown, Jimmie Rivett, Miss Violet Rivett and Mr and Mrs Ernie Nicholas.

George Daniel Stewart, a resident of Ramsay township, died at Almonte General Hospital of Jan 11, 1983 after a lengthy illness. He was 75. Born on March 25, 1907, the son of the late James Stewart and Catherine Munro, he was educated at SS No 6, Ramsay, and married Isabel Lawson on March 29, 1934 at Cedar Hill, who survives him. He worked as a farmer in Lanark county all of his life. Mr Stewart is survived by sons James of Pakenham township, Daniel at home, and daughters Doris (Mrs Ellard Peever) of Cobden, and Mary of Ottawa. He is also survived by brothers Robert, Malcolm and William of Almonte. he is predeceased by one son Elmer. Funeral service was held at the Kerry Funeral Home on Jan 13 at 11 am, the Rev Jack Lougheed officiating. Burial was at the Auld Kirk Cemetery. Pallbearers included Jack Penman, Donald Munro, Glen Lawson, Robert Cochran, Robert Gunn and Donald Stewart.

A native of Oak Park, 111., Rowan studied accounting at the University of Chicago, the Lewis Business Institute in Chicago and Northwestern University. He was still working as a public accountant from his Burbank office when he died. 1942-2020

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of James "Jim" Stewart, formerly of Cedar Hill, who passed away at the Carleton Place Terrace on September 22, 2020 in his 79th year. James Stewart, beloved husband of Elaine Bennett of 55 years. Dear father of Shawn (Arnprior) and Shantell (Kelowna, B.C.). Much loved brother of Mary Stewart-Vanek (Jack) and Daniel L. Stewart, and uncle to many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. Predeceased by his parents George Stewart and Isobel Lawson, sister Doris Peever and infant brother Elmer. Jim worked as a skilled tinsmith for many years and was a proud member of Sheet Metal Workers International Association Local 47 and was a graduate of Kemptville College. He was fondly remembered for being a maple syrup producer (Stewart Maple Products), his love for his horses and being a kind and caring neighbour who always gave anyone the benefit of the doubt. Arrangements entrusted to the Alan R. barker Funeral Home, Carleton Place.
