He was the son of Vernon and Julia (Griffith) Leith and was a 1963 graduate of Janesville High School. Robert married Joan Fritz on September 12, 1964, in Wausau, WI, and had been employed by General Motors in materials for 35 years before retiring in 1998. He was a member of Bethel Baptst Church, UAW Local 95, the Loyal Order of Moose and he always enjoyed fishing and hunting.
