When he retired they moved to Peachland, BC in the Okanogan. After his stroke he and Ida moved to Calgary, Alberta.

Emerentianna: Em was the daughter of Eugene Materi & Margaret Ripplinger. Eugene was the first child born on the St. Joseph's Colony, near Balgonie, SK. Em farmed her own land until her last stroke in 1972. Later she and Claude sold their farms and retired. They enjoyed winters in the southern climes during the winter months for many years. She now resides in Regina, SK near her son Lee.

Jean McLaren Stewart
Former Almonte area resident Jean McLaren Stewart (nee Cochran) died peacefully at Lanark Lodge, Perth, Ont., on Saturday, Jan. 11. She was 85. The daughter of the late Alexander Cochran and Catherine Forsythe of Ramsay, Jean was raised in the township on the family farm. She completed her teacher training at the former Ottawa Teacher's College. Jean taught in many of the area schools. She instilled a love for reading in everyone she met. She worked at Almonte Public Library for many years after she retired from teaching. In June of 1939 she married Malcolm Stewart. After initially living in Clayton they moved to Almonte where they raised two children. Jean was an active member of the Almonte United Church. She served as secretary of the Women's Association and was one of the first women elders. Beloved wife of Malcolm (Mac) Stewart. Dear mother of Sandy (Helen) of Etobicoke and Amy (Mrs. Bill Shail) of Kingsville, Onto Loving grandmother of Maxine (Mrs. Steven Robertson) of Newmarket, Graham (Kim) of Bradford, Alana (Mrs. Pat Carrey) of Arnprior and Christopher Shail of Kingsville. Great grandmother of Jordan and Lauren Stewart. She is also survived by four sisters, Mrs. Mary MacKenzie of Elliott Lake, Amy (Mrs. Ralph Milne) of Oakville, Margaret (Mrs. Gordon Donaldson) and Helen (Mrs. Ken Duncan) both of Almonte, and a sister-in- law Margaret Cochran. Predeceased by her only brother Russell. Jean will also be missed by her cousin Andrew Cochran of Sutton. The funeral service was held Monday, Jan. 13, at 3 p.m. at the C.R. Gamble Funeral Home with The Rev. Dr. Leo Hughes of Arnprior officiating and David Donaldson giving the eulogy. Interment in the Auld Kirk Cemetery in the spring.

Sylvianne Penner of Calgary passed away on Friday, December 22, 2017 at the age of 79 years.

Sylvianne Penner was born in Regina, Saskatchewan. She was a member of the Saskatchewan Golden Jubliee Choir. While with them, she travelled across Canada and the Northern US on their grand tour. She went on to teach in Northern Saskatchewan. She met her husband Paul soon afterwards and they settled down to have a family, eventually moving to Calgary. While there Sylvianne took up a career as a bookkeeper for various companies before becoming a freelancer, keeping books for many people and small businesses.

After retirement she delved in to her main hobbies of gardening and gathering genealogy information on her and her husbands many family branches and roots. Getting on to the internet in the late 90s greatly helped her with her research. She met many people online who shared her enthusiasm. She finally ended her research in 2015 when she decided she'd found all she could. Records older than the 17th century become scattered and less than accurate. Her yard became an oasis of tranquility and beauty with a diversity of plants, trees and bushes. Her vegetable gardens over flowed with abundance.

She will be greatly missed; her tenacity and love of family carries on within her children and grandchildren.

Syl Penner:
It seems like the end of an era of genealogy study and research. In some ways, Syl was a one of a kind leader, in the search for family knowledge. Her information, and her enthusiasm for people and their history helped many find out much more about their past. I hope people know and appreciate the extraordinary contribution she made to many of us on our genealogical search(s)! We will have great difficulty making up for the loss of the passion and knowledge that she has left us with her passing! Rest in Peace, dear Syl! You will be truly missed as a wonderful person, as well as an enthusiastic family researcher, and hard worker!!

Carstensen (Allison); son and daughter-in-law Christopher and Melinda of Raymond, OH; daughter and son-in-law Mischlynne and Michael Vollrath of Marysville, OH; step-daughter and son-in-law Kimberly (Slover) and Jonathan of Floyd County, VA; six grandchildren, Justin and partner Courtnee, Kasey, Kadie, Megan, Matthew, and Gus; two great grandchildren, Ava and Rowan; two brothers and their wives, David and Lordice of Corona, CA, and Richard and Carol of Sidney, OH.; and his Sheltie, Mya. In 1963 Kit graduated from Troy High School and attended the University of Cincinnati and Wright State University, ultimately earning his Bachelor of Science in Business Marketing from Wright State later in life. Kit proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from 1967-1971. He was a Vietnam Veteran. As a civilian he worked in mechanical engineering at various places, including Hobart, Goodrich, and Interflex in Troy, OH. He worked for Boyd Coddington (Boyd's Billet Wheels) in California, feeding his love of hotrods and muscle cars. His interest in airplanes took him to McDonnell Douglas in California and on to Boeing in the state of Washington. In 1991 Kit and Merri ventured to Alaska where they assumed management of a family automotive business, fed Kit's passion for fishing and the great outdoors, and made their home for 20 years. In 2011 Kit and Merri retired to Troy, Ohio, to be near family and friends, a decision that could not have been timelier. Memorial services with military honors presented by Veterans Memorial Honor Guard will be held at 7 p.m., Wednesday, July 2, 2014, at Baird Funeral Home of Troy, Ohio, Reverend John Shelton officiating.
