    ?b?Another of Ramsay's Early Settlers Gone.?/b?
Once more we are called on to discharge the most painful part of the duty devolving on caterers for the public in the way of news, that of recording the death of a well known and much respected inhabitant of this county, and whose expected death was briefly noticed last week. We feel satisfied that the inhabitants of the town and neighbourhood will learn with regret of the death of Mr. Andrew Cochrane, sen., which took place at his residence, 7th con. Ramsay, on Sunday last. Mr. Cochrane was born in Glasgow in the year 1813, and at the age of 19 left Scotland alone to seek his fortune in Canada, For a year or two he remained in the vicinity of Montreal, but ultimately came to the township of Ramsay, and settled in 1836 on the homestead where he resided continuously until his death. He married the year of his settlement, and by his wife, who has now been dead good many years, he had eleven children, nine of whom are now living. He took a very warm interest in the Presbyterian Church on the 8th line whilst it existed there. His last illness extended over period of seven weeks, and was paralysis, which held him so fast that for eighteen days before his death he could not eat, and gradually grew weaker until Sunday afternoon last at 3:30, when he quietly passed away without a struggle. The deceased was a thorough Reformer, and felt considerable interest in the success of Reform principles. The funeral took place on Tuesday last, and was very largely attended. On behalf of a very large number of our readers, and the inhabitants generally, we tender the family their deep sympathy.

Death Summons Andrew Cochran In His 92nd Year
Well-known Ramsay Man, Was Identified With Many Agricultural Movements
Ramsay Township lost one of its oldest and best known citizens, Saturday morning, in the death of Mr Andrew Cochran in his 92nd year. Mr Cochran passed away peacefully at the family residence on the 7th Line after being confined to his bed for some time as a result of heart trouble. Through his connection with public spirited activities calculated to stimulate the progress of agriculture, Mr Cochran was widely known in Lanark County and other parts of Eastern Ontario
    Interested In Fair
He was associated with the North Lanark Agricultural Society since youth, his father before him, having taken an active interest in Almonte Fair. In his time he served as president of the organization an as a director for a number of terms. At the time of his death he was by long odds the oldest member of the association and one of its honourary directors He was for a time a provincial judge under the Ontario Fairs Association in the cattle and sheep department with gave him a wide acquaintance with prominent livestock men in this part of the province. It is safe to say that during the long period of his adult life there were few agricultural activities of worthwhile nature that the late Mr Cochran was not identified with. For 36 years he was a director of the Lanark County Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Company, attending the meetings at Perth where he made a wide circle of friends. He served several terms as a councillor for his native Township of Ramsay, and was member of the session of the Almonte Presbyterian Church for a long period. In politics he was a staunch Liberal. Deceased was a son of the late Andrew Cochran and Isobelle Erskine, who immigrated from Glasgow, Scotland, and located at the present homestead in 1836. He was married 57 years ago to Catherine Wilson, who predeceased him five years. Seven years ago Mr and Mrs Cochran celebrated their golden wedding, receiving the felicitations of a wide circle of relatives and friends. Surviving are four sons and one daughter, Alexander Cochran of Ramsay; Wilson of Windsor, Ont.; Kenneth of Portland, Ore.; Milton on the homestead and Mrs William A. Jamieson (Isabel) of Almonte. There are also two brothers, Peter Cochran of Ramsay, and James of Moose Jaw; and three sisters, Mrs Robert Naismith, (Isabel), Saries, North Dakota; Mrs Thos Philip (Jennie), Forest Grove, Ore., and Mrs David Snedden (Ellen) of Almonte. Mr Cochran was one of a family of eleven which was remarkable for longevity. Of the six who have passed away, one sister, Mrs Joseph Yuill (Margaret) was 92; another sister, Mrs Wm Hall (Agnes) and a brother Robert were in their 80's. A brother Alexander, was killed while working on the farm at the age of 21 and a sister Lily died in girlhood at the age of 16. Of the surviving brothers and sisters, Mrs Naismith is the eldest being 94 years of age and still able to write a most readable letter; Mrs Philip is almost 90 and the other three are in the 80's.
    Large Funeral
On Sunday relatives and friends far and near called on the bereaved family and extended condolences. The funeral was exceptionally large, and was a fitting tribute to one whose life had spanned such a vast period of time, when measured by human standards. Rev A.J. Fowlie of the Almonte Presbyterian Church, assisted by Rev Robert Turley of St George's Anglican Church, Clayton, conducted the service at the home. Mr Fowlie officiated at the grave side. The pallbearers were six neighbours: Messrs Archie McArthur, William Philip, Wilbert Cochran, Andrew Stewart, Thomas Erskine and James Steele. Interment was in the Auld Kirk Cemetery. ?b?Sad Drowning At Carleton Place Little David Warren, son of W.J. Warren is the Victim?/b?
A sad accident occurred on Saturday afternoon when little David Warren, son of Mr and Mrs Wm. Warren, met death in the Mississippi river at the Bates & Innis bridge. The boy had secured permission to attend the Star theatre and was returning from there at about five o'clock, accompanied by a playmate Jackie Harper, when the fatal accident occurred. The boys when last seen before the accident were playing with a kitten on the lawn before the Bates & Innis mill. According to the story of Jackie Harper the boys when passing over the bridge became interested in the water plunging over the stop-logs at the edge of the bride. [bridge?] Boy-like they scrambled into the railing and watched the water take the drop. Intensely interested David leaned over the edge of the railing just a little too far and losing is balance fell into the seething waters. Jackie alarmed at seeing his comrade's predicament ran to Mr Alexander McDarmid's for help, which was immediately secured but not before the lad was drowned. The body was recovered in less than fifteen minutes. David George was the second son of Mr and Mrs W.J. Warren. Mr Warren who is a traveller for the Mount Forest Carriage Co, was at the time of the accident of the firm's headquarters in Mount Forest. He received word of the death at 6.30 and by 6.45 was motoring to Toronto. There he took the train arriving here early Sunday morning. The funeral was held on Monday afternoon from the home of the child's parent to the 8th line cemetery, Ramsay. The services were conducted by Rev W.A. Dobson. The pallbearers were six playmates of the child; Jackie Harper, Clara Syme, Lester Kemp, Peter Donald, Lawrence Virtue and Harold Virtue. As the cortege passed the town hall school the pupils formed lines as a last tribute to their departed fellow pupil. David, who was eight years and eight months old, was the second eldest of a family of five children, the remaining members of which are James, Jack, William and Isobel. A large number of friends of both Mr and Mrs Warren from the surrounding district accompanied the body to the cemetery, and the floral expressions of sympathy were many. Wreaths were from Mr and Mrs Stanley McColloch, Tweed; B.Y. Williams and family, Jackie Harper, Mrs Harper and Mrs Jefferson. Sprays from the mother and father; Mr and Mrs W.H. Wood, Ottawa; Mr and Mrs Geo M. Warren; Mr and Mrs F.C. Donald, and Miss E. McLaren, from the little cousins Clara and Myrtle Syme and Helen Naismith, J.H. McFadden and family, Mr and Mrs J.R. Robertson and Miss Olive, and Kathleen Findlay, Cut flowers were received in profusion from Master Harold Lewis, Bert Kingston, Andrew and Russell Cochran, little Lulu and Iona Boale, Miss Edith Hughes, Mr and Mrs Greville Toshack, Mr and Mrs H.M. Clare Syme Dies Suddenly
The sudden death of Clare T. (Pete) Syme of R.R. 1, Almonte occurred a, the Almonte General Hospital at 12.30 a.m. on Monday, May 13, 1974, following but a few hours' illness. He was 61. Clare farmed on the home farm at Bennie's Corners, and also operated a milk truck route for several years, and for the last two years was employed with Lindsay Farm Equipment in Almonte. Born in Ramsay Township on May 15, 1912, he was a son of Mrs. Mabel (Snedden) Syme, and the late, Peter T. Syme. He was a member of the United Church. He is survived by his wife, the former lone Boal, whom he married at Pakenham on June 10, 1942; his aged mother, Mrs. Peter T. Syme; a daughter Marilyn (Mrs. James Naismith) of Pakenham; a grandson, Matthew; and one sister, Myrtle (Mrs. Tom Nugent) of South March. Clare attended school at Bennie's Corners on the 8th line of Ramsay and continued on in high school in Almonte. He was always ready to participate in sports during these years. He loved the game of ball and always found time to play the game. He used to practice at home on the farm by getting his younger sister, Myrtle, to throw the ball as hard as she could either at him or to either side and he would field it and fire it back at her, and through time Myrtle also became a most capable player and used to give Clare some tough hard throws to handle. As years went by, and particularly after the 1939-45 war when the different softball leagues got organized again, Clare helped organize and coach the "Almonte Garage" team which was sponsored by Gordon Hill in 1945, until 1948, and was then sponsored by George Gomme as "Gomme's Lumber Kings," which continued until about 1952, during which time they were North Lanark League champions on different occasions. Clare continued playing with other teams, some in Almonte and others in Pakenham until his early 50's, and was always ready and willing to teach the younger players the many aspects of the game and fair play. He was a most capable umpire and performed this duty for many years. His personal contribution to the game of ball in this area has been unmeasurable, and he always did it most willingly. As a curler, Clare started with the old irons and continued on with the granites, and was President of the Almonte Curling Club on two different occasions. He was later presented with an honourary life membership pin by J. C. Smithson, the then president, for his contribution to the Almonte Curling Club in particular and curling in the valley in general. Clare represented Centre 24 in the Ottawa Valley as Centre Convenor for many years, which was a large responsibility and was most capably handled by him as he understood the many problems and pitfalls involved in scheduling the many competitions and events throughout the Centre. One competition that Clare was responsible for founding was the 10-pointer Mixed Bonspiel and was restricted to the Almonte curlers, except during the few years that Pakenham had ice problems, at which time they were included. All area curlers will understand and remember the great success this particular event became and the fellowship it created at the club level. In curling as in other sports, Clare always played to win, but in the event of a loss he took it gracefully and as a good sport but be would be ready for the return match. Clare really liked people and always had time to say "hello," have a chat about last night's hockey game or bet on tomorrow night's game, and even give odds on certain occasions. Our community will miss this great sportsman and his contributions. The funeral was held from the Kerry Funeral Home, 154 Elgin street, Almonte, on Wednesday, May 15th, at 2.30 p.m., with burial at Auld Kirk Cemetery. Rev. A. C. Dodds of Pakenham United Church conducted the funeral services. Pallbearers were Arthur Munro, Percy Timmins, Wilfred Lindsay, Jack C. Smithson, Donald Lockhart and Bill Boal.

Clare married Margaret Ione "Oney" Boal on 10 Jun 1942 in Pakenham, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. Margaret (daughter of Stanley Boal and Janet Maybelle Millar) was born in 1916 in Almonte, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; died on 19 May 2001 in Arnprior, Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada; was buried in 2001 in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada.
