    Mrs Edward James
Almonte lost one of its highly regarded citizens in the death on Wednesday, March 5th, of Mrs Edward James. About a week ago Mrs James contracted influenza and on Tuesday when her condition became alarming she was removed to the R.M. Hospital where she passed away the following morning. Deceased, whose maiden name was Jessie Jane Syme, was born 57 years ago, the eldest daughter of the late Peter T. Syme and his wife, Sarah McGill, of Ramsay. Thirty-five years ago she married Edward James of Almonte, who survives. Also left to mourn are three brothers and two sisters, namely, John of Almonte; -652- Catherine, Mrs Hugh McMillan, Ramsay; Peter of Bennies' Corners; Albert of Carleton Place and Violet, Mrs Archie Mick of Jackson, Mich. The loss of Mrs James is one which will be keenly felt in this community. Possessed of a kindly disposition she was beloved by all. She was a member of Bethany United Church and took part in all its activities. She was a member of the choir, taught in the Sunday School, was a life member of the Women's Missionary Society and leader of Circle No 5 of the Women's Auxiliary. Among the floral tributes were pieces from the choir of Bethany Church, Circle No 5 of Bethany W.A., the neighbours, W.M.S. of Bethany Church and the Auld Kirk Cemetery committee. The funeral will be held on Friday, March 7th, at 2 p.m. (D.S.T.) from the family residence Reserve Street, for service in Bethany United Church.

    Funeral of Mrs Edward James
A last tribute of esteem and respect was paid to the memory of the late Mrs Edward James, Friday afternoon, March 7th, at her funeral which was held from the family residence on Reserve Street, to Bethany Church and the Auld Kirk Cemetery. The church was filled to capacity, many of those present being members of the congregation among whom she had served so faithfully in the various women's organizations. The pastor, Rev W.J. Scott, conducted the service, taking as his text the words: "Weep not; she is not dead." Because of the prominence of deceased in church work, Mr Scott, made a direct reference to some of her fine qualities. He told of her association with the various branches of the congregational organization and stressed the cheerfulness with which she devoted her time to these activities. There was nothing grudging about the way Mrs James performed the various tasks that she undertook. Her only regret seemed to be that she had not more time to place at the disposal of the church and its interests. Death came to Mrs James at the Rosamond Memorial Hospital, after a brief illness. The pallbearers were Messrs O.L. James, Lorne James, Ross Barr and Arnold Metcalfe of Almonte, Clare Syme of Ramsay and Jas Crawford of Carleton Place. The sympathy of many friends goes out to the bereaved husband and the brothers and sisters of deceased.

Jessie married Thomas Edward James on 4 Mar 1905 in Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. Thomas (son of Thomas Herbert James and Jane Rennie Deachman) was born on 10 Oct 1880 in Ramsay Township, Lanark County, Canada West; died on 4 Mar 1956 in Almonte, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried on 6 Mar 1956 in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. Waterworks Superintendent Dies Suddenly Of Severe Heart Attack
John Syme Served For 16 Years And Will Be Hard Man To Replace
The sudden death of Mr John Syme Friday evening following a severe heart attack was a great shock to people of Almonte and District. For 16 years he acted as waterworks superintendent and town foreman. He will be hard man to replace in these positions where he served conscientiously and efficiently. Mr Syme who was 62 years old at the time of his death had suffered from a heart condition for some time. At the last he was only sick for a couple of days remaining at home and letting one of his staff look after his work. Mr Syme came here originally to look after the waterworks and to replace the then superintendent, Mr Tough who had been killed in an automobile accident near Pakenham after holding his job for a little less than a year. A native of Ramsay Township, the son of the late Mr and Mrs Peter Syme, Jack, as he was popularly known, had many local friends from the start. He was a hard worker having charge of many town activities such as street work, excavation for new waterworks mains, the condition of the pumps at the wells which he had to visit every night and even the job of weed inspector was wished on him. In 1921 he married Hilda Dorothy Webb of Vernon, British Columbia where they lived for a short time before coming to Almonte. He leaves to mourn his loss besides his wife, three sons, namely, Ronald, Barry and Edgar also two brothers, Albert of Carleton Place and Peter of Ramsay; also two sisters, Mrs H. McMillan of Almonte, and Mrs Archie Mick of Michigan, U.S.A. The funeral was held on Monday afternoon from the family home of George Street to the Auld Kirk cemetery. The Rev T. De Courcy Rayner of the Presbyterian church officiated at the services. Pallbearers were Messrs R.J. France, E.J. Lee, Harry Houston, John McGill, W.A. Metcalfe and Ed James. Among a profusion of floral offerings were pieces from the Town Council, the Fire Brigade and the town employees. Noticed among those attending the funeral from out of town was Hon Geo H. Doucett, M.L.A. for Lanark.

Death of Peter T. Syme Removes Another Popular Ramsay Farmer
The funeral of the late Peter T. Syme held from the family home, 7th Concession of Ramsay on Friday afternoon, June 6th, was one of the largest ever seen in this part of Lanark County. Mr Syme was in his 63rd year and died suddenly of a heart attack on the morning of Wednesday, June 4th. Outside the immediate family circle, few if any knew that Mr Syme had been under the shadow of an ominous heart condition for some time. He maintained the same cheerful attitude towards his many friends and kept whatever worries he had to himself. He was born on the Syme homestead, 10th Line of Ramsay, a son of the late Peter T. Syme and his wife, Sarah McGill. He attended the 10th Line School and later was a student for a time at the local High School. In Oct., 1911, he married Mabel G. Snedden, a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs David Snedden and for four years he ran the Snedden farm on a partnership basis with his father-in-law. In 1916, Mr Snedden died and the farm was for sale. Mr Syme did not feel like purchasing at that time and he moved to Brockville where he was employed in the Briscoe Motor Car Plant and later he made munitions for the first World War. After spending some 17 months in these industrial pursuits, Mr Syme and his family moved back to this section and he purchased the Anderson homestead on the 7th Concession of Ramsay. He continued to farm there until the time of his death. During the last 15 years, his son, Clare, was in partnership with his father in running the farm. Mr Syme leaves his wife and a family of two, a son and a daughter ? Clare T. on the homestead and Helen Myrtle (Mrs Thomas J. Nugent) of Braeside. There are, also, two sisters: Katherine (Mrs Hugh McMillan) of Almonte and Violet (Mrs Archie Mick) of Jackson, Mich. A brother, John, and sister, Jessie (Mrs Ed James) of the Almonte, predeceased him some years ago. The funeral was held on Friday afternoon for the family home with Rev Wm Sunter of the Pakenham and Blakeney charges conducted the services at the house and the Auld Kirk Cemetery. The pallbearers were: Messrs Jas Snedden, Jack Snedden, James Steele of Ramsay; John Lindsay of Almonte; George Noonan of Pakenham and James Miller of Carleton Place. The sudden death of Mr Syme following so closely on that of another popular Ramsay farmer who resided in the same neighbourhood was a great shock to people in this part of Lanark County. The late Mr Syme (Pete to his host of friends) was a popular man. He was fond of all kinds of sports, especially hockey, baseball and softball. He played baseball for years with teams at Blakeney and was always a supporter of hockey in Almonte, following the teams to other points in the Ottawa Valley whenever he could manage it. He never held public offices, and was a member of the Blakeney United congregation. He was a very cheerful chap a good neighbour and friend, one of those whose loss in a community will be felt for a long time. There were over 40 floral offerings among which were the following pieces from organizations and business concerns: Ramsay Women's Institute; Peterson's Softball Club, The Snow Club, Mississippi Motors and Staff, Carleton Place; Hotel Almonte and Staff, Teachers and Pupils, Bennies' Corners School, Bennie's Corners Softball Team, Almonte Flour Mill, Cedar Hill Hunt Club, Long Lake Hunt Club, The Blakeney Ladies' Aid, Employees of Renfrew Woollen Mill, Carleton Place

1974, Thursday May 23,The Almonte Gazette, page 3
    Clare Syme Dies Suddenly
The sudden death of Clare T. (Pete) Syme of R.R. 1, Almonte occurred a, the Almonte General Hospital at 12.30 a.m. on Monday, May 13, 1974, following but a few hours' illness. He was 61. Clare farmed on the home farm at Bennie's Corners, and also operated a milk truck route for several years, and for the last two years was employed with Lindsay Farm Equipment in Almonte. Born in Ramsay Township on May 15, 1912, he was a son of Mrs. Mabel (Snedden) Syme, and the late, Peter T. Syme. He was a member of the United Church. He is survived by his wife, the former lone Boal, whom he married at Pakenham on June 10, 1942; his aged mother, Mrs. Peter T. Syme; a daughter Marilyn (Mrs. James Naismith) of Pakenham; a grandson, Matthew; and one sister, Myrtle (Mrs. Tom Nugent) of South March. Clare attended school at Bennie's Corners on the 8th line of Ramsay and continued on in high school in Almonte. He was always ready to participate in sports during these years. He loved the game of ball and always found time to play the game. He used to practice at home on the farm by getting his younger sister, Myrtle, to throw the ball as hard as she could either at him or to either side and he would field it and fire it back at her, and through time Myrtle also became a most capable player and used to give Clare some tough hard throws to handle. As years went by, and particularly after the 1939-45 war when the different softball leagues got organized again, Clare helped organize and coach the "Almonte Garage" team which was sponsored by Gordon Hill in 1945, until 1948, and was then sponsored by George Gomme as "Gomme's Lumber Kings," which continued until about 1952, during which time they were North Lanark League champions on different occasions. Clare continued playing with other teams, some in Almonte and others in Pakenham until his early 50's, and was always ready and willing to teach the younger players the many aspects of the game and fair play. He was a most capable umpire and performed this duty for many years. His personal contribution to the game of ball in this area has been unmeasurable, and he always did it most willingly. As a curler, Clare started with the old irons and continued on with the granites, and was President of the Almonte Curling Club on two different occasions. He was later presented with an honourary life membership pin by J. C. Smithson, the then president, for his contribution to the Almonte Curling Club in particular and curling in the valley in general. Clare represented Centre 24 in the Ottawa Valley as Centre Convenor for many years, which was a large responsibility and was most capably handled by him as he understood the many problems and pitfalls involved in scheduling the many competitions and events throughout the Centre. One competition that Clare was responsible for founding was the 10-pointer Mixed Bonspiel and was restricted to the Almonte curlers, except during the few years that Pakenham had ice problems, at which time they were included. All area curlers will understand and remember the great success this particular event became and the fellowship it created at the club level. In curling as in other sports, Clare always played to win, but in the event of a loss he took it gracefully and as a good sport but be would be ready for the return match. Clare really liked people and always had time to say "hello," have a chat about last night's hockey game or bet on tomorrow night's game, and even give odds on certain occasions. Our community will miss this great sportsman and his contributions. The funeral was held from the Kerry Funeral Home, 154 Elgin street, Almonte, on Wednesday, May 15th, at 2.30 p.m., with burial at Auld Kirk Cemetery. Rev. A. C. Dodds of Pakenham United Church conducted the funeral services. Pallbearers were Arthur Munro, Percy Timmins, Wilfred Lindsay, Jack C. Smithson, Donald Lockhart and Bill Boal.

Clare married Margaret Ione "Oney" Boal on 10 Jun 1942 in Pakenham, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. Margaret (daughter of Stanley Boal and Janet Maybelle Millar) was born in 1916 in Almonte, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; died on 19 May 2001 in Arnprior, Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada; was buried in 2001 in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada.
