WILLIAM HAMILTON (1788-1854)
Some family trees on ancestry suggest he arrived in Clarendon about 1821. In the second
Prendergast report, he has settled on Lot 15, Range 7 and has cleared 5 acres and part of the
road. This confirms to some extent that he was in the area at least a few years before the land
was allocated by Prendergast. As of 1833, he appears to have acquired another piece of land,
lot 14, Range 7. This is confirmed by the 1842 census as by then he has 300 acres of land.
From a couple of thin files at the Archives, the Gravelle notes suggest that he was born in 1787,
not 1788. It also says he comes from Glasgow and is a carpenter. Gravelle also says he is an
ex-soldier. In the 1842 Census, William is also identified as a carpenter, with a wife and six
children. They are Agnes, 1829, John, 1831, William 1835, Robert 1837, George 1838, James
1841. It appears that his next child, Jessie is born in 1845. The 1842 census also lists a Jennet
Hamilton, age 87, who is from Scotland; perhaps she is his mother.
While he and his wife are from Scotland, the children were all born in Canada. His wife is
Margaret Duncan (1804-1864) and she is from Paisley, Scotland. The Gravelle file suggests
she was born on April 17, 1806. As of the 1842 census he is farming on a 300 acre property.
He is growing lots of crops and also has considerable livestock, especially sheep. The family
worships with the Church of Scotland. In 1845 he has a daughter, Janet (Jessie) who marries
Samuel Horner on 28 June 1866. These are the parents of my grandmother, Janet (Jessie)
Horner. She marries Samuel Sherwood Dale in 1907. (Gravelle files say that the births of the
Hamiltons can be found in the Anglican baptism records.)
He may have left Scotland 19 May 1821 from Greenock, (Glasgow), Scotland, having been
sponsored by The Glasgow Trongate Society and sailing on the ship "David of London", (Capt
Gemmell, 364 settlers). The book, The Lanark Society Settlers, has a William Hamilton listed.
NOTE: There is a John Hamilton with a wife and either 4 or 6 children renting 30 acres of land
as of 1842. He says he has been in the country for 13 years and he and his wife come from
Ireland, with the children born in Canada. Presumably he arrived in the second wave of settlers;
it is not clear if he knew William Hamilton given that one came from Scotland and the other from
Ireland.

William Alexander Hamilton, 2540 College avenue, assistant building inspector for the city of Regina for many years, and a resident of the city since 1906, died early Friday morning at his home. Mr. Hamilton was born in Pontiac county, Quebec, in 1867. He received his education at Almonte, Ont., and it was there he started In business. He remained in Almonte for three years, and transferred to Ottawa where he became associated with a sash and door factory, remaining there for 16 years. In April, 1900, the factory, which Mr. Hamilton later owned, was destroyed by fire, an incident which occurred again in 1903. Mr. Hamilton came west In 1904, to Indian Head, where he became manager of the Western Manufacturing Company. Two years later he located at Regina as manager of the Cushing brothers. In 1909 he resigned this position and was employed with the city as assistant building inspector. He was predeceased by his wife, Lillian, four years ago. He was a member of the Masonic lodge, the Odd Fellows lodge, the Canadian Order of Forests and the American Yeoman. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 3:30 oclock, Regina time, from the First Baptist church. Rev. Howard Bentall will officiate and burial will be in Regina cemetery.

?/b?A resident of Ottawa and district for many years and active in the Masonic Order for more than half a century, Moses Barnett Hamilton, 9 Foster Street, died in hospital on Monday after a short illness. He was in his 82nd year. Mr. Hamilton was born at Shawville, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Hamilton, and was educated at Almonte. He has been a stationary engineer with Canada Packers, Ltd., Hull, for more than 30 years. In religion he was an Anglican and as a Mason held membership in Chaudiere Lodge. He was married at Thurso, his wife being the former Harriet Dole. She died several years ago. Surviving is one sister, Mrs. Jean Fummerton, Portage La Prairie, Man. The body is resting at the parlors of A. E. Veitch and Son, Ltd., 453 Parkdale Avenue, where a public service will be held on Thursday at 2 p.m. Interment will be in Pinecrest Cemetery.

(Medical):News was circulated that Robert Hamilton, well known railway section foreman, had been killed by a freight train about two miles west of Shawville at mileage 47.
Foreman Hamilton and his assistants, Arthur Horner and John Horner, were on the handcare, preceeding eastward, when a freight train over took them. The freight was a particularly heavy one, loaded with logs, with an engine ahead and one at the back of the train. When the crew of the first engine saw the handcar, it was unable to stop soon enough to avoid hitting it.
Before the train struck the handcar, the two Horner men had jumped to safety, and as their vision was blocked by the engine they were unable to tell whether the foreman had jumped off the car or not.
After hearing the testimony of the sectionmen and trainmen, and C. F.C. Powles, who stated the death was due to a fractured skull and other injuries, Dr .L. Fena County Corner, of Campbells Bay declared that an inquest would not be necessary.

This village was shocked and saddened at noon on Thursday last when news was circulated that Robert Hamilton, well known railway section foreman, had been killed by a freight train about two miles west of Shawville at mileage 47.
Foreman Hamilton and his assistants, Arthur Horner and John Horner, were on the handcar, preceeding eastward, when a freight train over took them. The freight was a particularly heavy one, loaded with logs, with an engine ahead and one at the back of the train. When the crew of the first engine saw the handcar, it was unable to stop soon enough to avoid hitting it.
Before the train struck the handcar, the two Horner men had jumped to safety, and as their vision was blocked by the engine they were unable to tell whether the foreman had jumped off the car or not.
After hearing the testimony of the sectionmen and trainmen, and ----- C. F.C. Powles, who stated the death was due to a fractured skull and other injuries, Dr .L. Fena--- County Corner, of Campbells Bay declared that an inquest would not be necessary.

Mr. Hamilton was born in Clarendon, a short distance from where the accident occurred. He came to Shawville at the age of 15, and began work on the Shawville section, under J.J. Gibson who died during this past Summer. Except for a year or so on the Fort Coulonge section the Pontiac railway line, he spent most of his time on the Shawville section, succeeding Mr. Gibson in his retirement as foreman.
He was married to the former Miss Pearl Wilson, who predeceased him 18 years ago. He leaves a daughter Miss Lois Hamilton, an undergraduate of Bishop's College, Lennoxville, Que., and a sister, Mrs. Sam How----- who lived with him. He was a member of Shawville Wesleyn Church.
The funeral was held on Sunday afternoon from the late home of the deceased, to Shawville Wesleyn Methodist Church. Service was conducted by the Pastor Rev. H. Kie---- who was assisted by Rev. S. Blanchard, of Ottawa. Mr. Kie---- sermon text was Romans 5 "Death passed upon all men" Hymns sung were "Rock of Ages" & "Abide With Me"
Interment was made at Maple Grove cemetery.

Besides his widow and two children, he is survived by a stepson, Sergent D. S. Caldwell, overseas; a sister, Miss Mary Hamilton, Metcalfe, Ont., and two grandchildren. The remains are resting at Hulse and Playfair Ltd., 315 McLeod street, where the funeral service wilkl take place in the chapel on Saturday at 3 p.m. Interment will be in Merivale cemetery.

(Special) Word has been received here of the death of a former resident of this - village at Milden, Sask., on Thursday in the person of Samuel Horner, after a brief illness at the age of 71 years. He was born in Clarendon township, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Sam Horner. He was educated in the local schools and in 1901 was married to Miss Agnes Grant. In 1912 they went west. Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, LAC. PARENTEAU, Anna Laura 1923 - 2008 Anna Laura Parenteau, beloved wife of Mr. Tom Parenteau of Red Deer, passed away peacefully at the Red Deer Regional Hospital on Saturday, July 12, 2008 at the age of 84 years. Anna was born September 14, 1923 on the family farm near Ferland, Saskatchewan. She attended business school in Regina, and worked in various office services roles at several locations across Canada. While in Regina, she met Tom, her husband of sixty-one years. Anna and Tom raised three children while living in several army bases across Canada, before settling in Calgary in 1958. Later, Anna and Tom moved to Frenchman Butte, Saskatchewan to run the local service station. They retired to Red Deer in 1993 to be closer to family. Anna got along with everyone; she was patient, hard-working, compassionate and had a great sense of humour. She loved dancing, baking, gardening, curling and traveling. Anna is survived by her husband Tom, daughters Peggy (Bob) Eccleston and Carole (Ian) Parker, both of Calgary, and son Rob (Leslie) Parenteau of Sylvan Lake, Alberta, as well as five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Anna was predeceased by her brother, Don McTaggart in 1993. Mom has been reunited with Dad (the late Charles Alan) and will now take up watching over her three children, seven grandchildren, and six great grandchildren from heaven.
A long time resident of Richmond Hill, Mom will be remembered for her many volunteer positions that she held over the years, as well as being a loyal employee with several businesses in town.
Service to others made her happy, and the many stories of small kindnesses that people have shared with us recently has been wonderful. Dorothy Kathlyn Brown age 91, was born in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, to Russell and Evelyn Kinnee, on March 2, 1917. She met her life mate, Jack Brown, at the Regina Rowing Club, and they were married on Jack's birthday March 16, 1939, in Vancouver, British Columbia. While Jack served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II, Dorothy returned to her childhood home. After years of transferring back and forth across Canada with the Air Force, Jack and Dorothy and their two sons, Scott and Gary, moved to Tucson, Arizona in January 1966. Many years were spent square dancing, golfing, and making ceramics at Tucson Estates. They moved to Santa Catalina Villas in 1998. Dorothy is preceded in death by her beloved Jack (2001), and grandson, Parker. She passed away on Tuesday, September 9, 2008 at SonLight Adult Care Home. Dorothy is survived by her sister, Delores; son, Scott (Barbara); son, Gary; six grandchildren, Matt (Amy) of Denver, Jennifer (Jeremiah) of Argentina, Justin (Erica) of North Carolina, Eric, Jessica and Daniel all of Tucson and five great-grandchildren. Vivian Eunice Ellison, 86, of Carlisle, died Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at Chapel Pointe at Carlisle.
Born March 17, 1927 in Winchester, Ontario, Canada, she was a daughter of the late William E. and Annie Hayes Hamilton and the widow of Joseph Paul Ellison
She was a graduate of Nyack College, NY and three years of Nursing at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, NY. Eunice was a registered nurse and also a missionary for the Christian Missionary Alliance Church.
Surviving are one daughter, Elaine Ruth Skene of Lake Tapps, Washington; two sons, David W. Ellison of Vestal, NY and Robert P. Ellison of Monrovia, CA; one sister, Doris Leeson of Ottawa, Canada; and eight grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Keith Hamilton; one sister, Genevieve Nash and one daughter, Linda B. Ellison.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 6, 2013 at Henry Chapel of Chapel Pointe at Carlisle, 770 South Hanover Street, Carlisle with Rev. Walter L. Frankenberry officiating. Burial will be in Letort Cemetery, Carlisle. A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday at Chapel Pointe.
Hoffman-Roth Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 219 North Hanover Street, Carlisle is in charge of the funeral arrangements.
