Obit. ? The Late William Gilmour
With sincere regret we have this week to record the death of one of the oldest and most highly esteemed residents of this town, in the person of Mr Wm Gilmour. The sad event took place at his home here last Thursday in the 69th year of his age, after an illness of about a week from pleurisy. Deceased was one of the best known men in the county and a generation ago was one of Ramsay's leading citizens. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland, February 2nd, 1821, and when an infant six weeks old his parents (the late Allan Gilmour and wife) emigrated to Canada. They settled the same year of the farm in Ramsay now owned and occupied by Mr E. Tierney, and there the subject of this sketch lived continuously for over sixty-four years. He had an opportunity of experiencing the hardships incident to the early settlement of this county, as well as the pleasure of seeing the primeval forest make way for the prosperous towns, villages and farms that are now to be found throughout this section. When but twelve years of age he did his share in clearing the land and assisting his parents in the work of tilling the soil, whereby they secured a livelihood. At that time education was almost out of the question. The school (!) then in use was a small log building that stood on what is now our Bridge street, opposite Mr Robertson's store; and the roads leading to it were paths through the bush ? "blazed roads," as they were called. Later on what was known as "Gemmill's school" was established, and there Mr Gilmour received what little education he got. However, he made good use of his spare time at home, and in this way picked up knowledge that proved very useful to him in after life. He filled the important office of collector of taxes for the township before Almonte was made a separate municipality; was for many years a constable; and from about the year 1860 till his death he was the trusted agent of Major (now Lieut,-Col.) Gemmill. He was also librarian of the Ramsay Library and Mechanics' Institute for a good many years. He was thoroughly honourable in his dealings, and won an enviable reputation among his fellows. In 1844 he married Ellen Burns, Who survives him. Seven children were born to them, five of whom are living, viz.: Mrs Peter Naismith, Ramsay; Allan W. Gilmour, Braeside; Robert, of this town; William, of Ramsay; and James B., now in Dakota. The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon, to the eighth line cemetery, and was very largely attended, old residents from all parts of the county being present to pay the last tribute of respect to their departed friend. The mourning widow and family have our sympathy in their bereavement.

    "The Late Allan Gilmour"
It becomes our duty this week to chronicle the death of one of the earliest inhabitants of this neighbourhood in the person of Mr. Allan Gilmour, who passed away last Thursday, aged 74 years. His system had been gradually wearing out for six months past ? a general breakup. Mr. Gilmour's parents, the late Allan Gilmour and wife, came to Canada from Scotland with the early Settlers of 1821, and less than a year after their arrival here deceased was born on the lot on which he lived all his life and on which he died ? the corner lot on the 9th Line of Ramsay adjoining Col. Gemmill's property. He was therefore one of the very first children born in this vicinity, and saw the wonderful transformations that have taken place in the last three quarters of a century.
He was twice married ? first to Miss More, sister of Mr. James More of Ramsay by whom he had a family of seven children, who survive as follows:
    Allan A. Gilmour of Renfrew;
    John A,
    William & Joseph Gilmour,
    Mrs. James Townend and
    Mrs. W.F. Peden, Almonte; and
    Mrs. Wilson, Brockville.
Mrs. Gilmour died many years ago.
His second wife nee Miss Clarke of Packenham survives. The funeral took place on Saturday to the Eighth Line Cemetery when a large number of people turned out to pay the final tribute of respect to one who has so long been associated with the progress of this section.

    John Gilmour
One of Almonte's oldest citizens died on Monday when Mr John Gilmour passed away at the age of 83 years. Deceased was born in Ramsay in the early years of the settlement of the township, and with his four brothers and one sister bore their share of the pioneer work. When grown to manhood he married Jane Lindsay, a sister of Mr Gavin Lindsay, who was for some years a resident of Almonte, and to them three children were born, one son Allan, who now lives near Bennie's Corners, and Mrs Allan Naismith and Maggie, both of whom are dead. Mrs Gilmour died about eight or nine years ago. The brothers of deceased were Messrs. William, James, Hugh, Gilmour, and the sister, Mrs Wm Slater, all of whom are now dead but Hugh, who resides in the Cobden neighbourhood. The late Mr Gilmour was a strong, hardy man, and did the most of the work necessary in his large vegetable garden in New England, and did it well, which was a wonderful thing for a man of his years. Mrs John Lang Passes Away
At nine o'clock this Thursday morning the spirit of Mrs John Lang took its flight back to Him who gave it. She was born in Ramsay, on the eighth line, was a daughter of the late James Gilmour, and was 88 years of age. Her father was one of the Scotch settlers who came to this section in 1821 and he settled on lot 13 in the 7th concession of Ramsay, but afterwards removed to Western Ontario, settling in Stanley township in the county of Huron, where he bought a farm, and spent the balance of his life. Mrs Lang however returned to this section when about 18 years of age, and in 1855 she was married to Mr John Lang, the marriage taking place in the old stone church on the eighth line. They live on Almonte for a while, where Mr Lang was operating a sawmill on the present site of the electric light station. Later they went to Bruce Co. but returned to Almonte after seven years, in 1870, and afterwards lived on the farm by the riverside, which has since been the family home. Of the family born to them three are still living. These are Mrs Throop of Ottawa, Henry at home, Dr A.A.J. Lang at Sanborn, N.D., Amelia, Lavina and Robert are dead, as well as Mr Lang, who died in 1895. Mrs Lang was one of the oldest, if not the very oldest resident in these parts, and had lived to see the country changed from a dense unbroken forest to its present condition of wide spreading farms and comfortable homes. She endured her share of the toil and hardship of the pioneer days, an could talk most interestingly of the early days and their hard experiences of recent months which necessitated treatment at the hospital last winter, she retained her faculties to a wonderful degree until about three weeks ago, since when she has gradually weakened until death came this morning. The funeral takes place on Saturday at 2.30 pm., to the eighth line cemetery.

Margaret married John Lang in 1855. John (son of Arthur Lang and Amelia Wilson) was born on 14 May 1829 in Ramsay Township, Lanark County, Canada West; died on 17 Mar 1895 in Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried on 21 Mar 1895 in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. Mrs P. Naismith Dies in Ramsay
Aged Lady Had Only Been Ailing for the Last Two Months
Mrs Peter Naismith died at her home on the ninth line of Ramsay, on Sunday morning, She was 81 years of age, and had been in poor health for the past two months. Mrs Naismith, whose maiden name was Catherine Gilmour, belonged to a pioneer family of Ramsay Township. She was a daughter of the late William Gilmour and his wife, Helen Burns, settlers from Scotland, who made their home on a farm on the outskirts of Almonte. Sixty years ago she was married to Mr Peter Naismith and their wedded life was an ideal one. He predeceased her in 1914. On both sides of the house they were widely connected. They had a family of eleven children all of whom reached maturity. They are: Peter and Albert on the homestead in Ramsay; John of Calgary; James of Vermilion, Alta; Welland, of Exparto, Calif; William, of Denver, Col; Lawrence, of Almonte, and Maggie on the homestead. Robert, who resided at Calgary, served in the Great War and was killed overseas. Jennie died in 1914 and Jessie, Mrs Wm Steele, in 1917. Mrs Naismith was a member of the Auld Kirk on the eighth line of Ramsay, as a girl and continued as a member of St Andrew's, now Bethany United Church until her death. She was of the finest type of the pioneer stock, always ready, despite her busy home life, to render help to neighbours and friends when needed. She was one of the best known ladies in the district, and this was evidenced by the very large assembly of mourners at her funeral on Tuesday when she was laid to rest in the Auld Kirk Cemetery beside the remains of her husband. Rev J.R. MacCrimmon conducted the service and the pallbearers were old neighbours: Messrs Andrew Cochran, Wm Paul, Wm Phillips, Greville Toshack, Alex Barker and Jack McGill. (Medical):Miss Lang had been ill for some time, and latterly her trouble was diagnosed as an internal tumour. Two weeks ago she went to the hospital to have an operation performed for the removal of the tumour. Her brother, Dr Albert Lang, was with her last Monday ? the day selected for the operation. The physicians made an incision to carry out their plans, when it was discovered that her trouble was cancer, and of such a nature that it was sure to end her life in a short time. The doctors decided that a further operation was unnecessary. Miss Lang was made comfortable, and was progressing quite favourably until Tuesday forenoon, when she began to sink.

    Miss Lang's Sudden Death
Residents of this neighbourhood were shocked on Tuesday afternoon to learn of the death, in St Luke's Hospital, Ottawa, that day, of Margaret Alvina Lang, daughter of Mrs John Lang, Ramsay ? familiarly known as "Vinie." Deceased , who was 29 years old, was a pleasant-faced and pleasant-mannered lady, clever and popular, and the sudden ending of so useful a life has evoked the warmest expressions of sympathy with the doubly bereaved family, who have found of late years that misfortunes have come upon them in battalions. Miss Lang had been ill for some time, and latterly her trouble was diagnosed as an internal tumour. That afternoon the relatives here received a message that she was sinking rapidly, followed by another fifteen minutes later announcing her death. The body was brought home by Wednesday's Soo train, and the funeral took place this (Thursday) afternoon, to the eighth line cemetery, a very large number turning out to testify their respect for the deceased and to mark their sympathy with the sorrowing mother and her family, Rev R.J. Hutcheon, M.A., of whose congregation deceased was a member, officiated. Miss Lang was a member of Atthewell Lodge No 29, Daughters of Rebekah, Almonte, and the members of that order attended the funeral in abody and conducted their impressive burial service.

    The Late Mrs. Steele
The angel of death which hovers over humanity descended to this community last week and claimed the bright young life of Jessie Gilmour Naismith, beloved wife of Mr. Wm. Steele, of Claysmore, Alta., at the early age of forty-seven years. Deceased, who was the eldest daughter of the late Peter Naismith and Catherine Gilmour, was born in Ramsay township and spent her life until her marriage to Mr. Steele about nine years ago, when she went west to reside at Claysmore, Alta. About for years ago she was taken ill with a serious form of paralysis and came east to get the best medical attention and loving care but all was of no avail and death released her from all suffering on Friday. The late Mrs Steele was of a bright cheerful disposition, making the most of life although it had been darkened for years by suffering and affliction, all of which was borne with Christian patience and resignation. She leaves to mourn her husband (who was with her when she passed away), a little daughter, Kathleen, her mother, one sister and seven brothers. These are Margaret and Albert at home; Peter of Ramsay; Wm. of Denver, Col; Welland, of San Francisco, Cal.; John, Edmonton, Alta.; Jas, Heward, Sask,; Lawrence, of Morse, Sask., all of whom have the deepest sympathy of many friends in their sad bereavement. The funeral which took place from Mr. Albert Naismith's residence on the 9th line on Sunday afternoon, was very largely attended. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Mr. Turner of Montreal, in the absence of Rev. S.G. Brown, interment being made in the 8th line cemetery.

Jessie married William Mostyn Steele in 1907. William was born in 1868 in Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; died on 14 Jul 1957 in Vermilion, Lloydminster Census Division, Alberta, Canada. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

? This community was suddenly overcast with gloom when the angel of death claimed the bright young life of Jean Carswell, second daughter of the late Peter Naismith of the 9th line Ramsay, at the early age of 37 years and 4 months. Deceased was of a king, cheerful disposition, making the most of life although at intervals for many years past it had been darkened by suffering and affliction, all of which had been borne with Christian patience and resignation. A few weeks ago the late Miss Naismith was taken ill with pleurisy, which, with other complications, proved too much for the already weakened body and death released her from all suffering on Friday morning. Besides her mother, she is survived by eight brothers and two sisters, (Jessie), Mrs W. Steele, Claymore, Alta, and Margaret, Peter and Albert at home; Wm, Denver, Col.; Welland, San Francisco; James, Heward, Sask; Robt, Calgary; John, Edmonton; and Lawrence, Morse, Sask, all of whom have the deepest sympathy of many friends in their sorrow, this being the second bereavement in the family inside four months. Sudden Passing Of Tobe Naismith Widely Mourned
Death of Popular Citizen Comes As Great Shock To This District
Sad and sudden was the death this Thursday morning at the Rosamond Memorial Hospital of Lawrence Naismith, more familiarly known to his many friends at "Tobe." Mr Naismith had been indisposed for the last few weeks but was going about up to Monday afternoon when he took a turn for the worse and was confined to bed. By Tuesday noon his condition had grown so serious that he was rushed to the hospital and an Ottawa doctor was summoned to perform an emergency operation. This disclosed that Mr Naismith could not recover and the announcement came as a distinct shock to the whole town and district. There was no more active, cheerful or kindly man in Almonte than "Tobe" Naismith. His associations formed as representative in this district for General Motors Limited, of Oshawa, and a patron of sports and athletics brought him many contacts which added to his wide popularity. His passing is a great loss to a town which has suffered many similar losses in the last few years and which can ill afford the removal of such citizens.
    An Active Life
The late Lawrence Naismith was born at the homestead, ninth line of Ramsay, of February 19th, 1879, and was 56 years old at the time of his sudden passing. He was a son of the late Peter Naismith and his wife, the former Catherine Gilmour, and attended school at Bennies Corners. Going West in 1898, Mr Naismith settled in Wawanesa, Man., where he operated an insurance business until 1908 when he moved to Morse, Sask. There he established a hardware, real estate and insurance business. While in Morse he served for some time as a member of the council and Board of Education, In 1922 Mr Naismith sold out his western interests and returned to the old home town of Almonte, where he formed a connection with General Motors and was a most successful representative up to the time of his death.
    President Bowling Club
Deceased was a member of Bethany United Church and a life member of Morse Lodge, A.F & A.M. and a member of Granite Chapter No 61. Since coming to Almonte he served on the Board of Education and several other bodies. He was president of the Lawn Bowling Club at the time of his death and was an enthusiastic supporter of all lines of sport, especially baseball and hockey. The late Mr Naismith leaves a wife, formerly Miss Helen Snedden of Ramsay, and a daughter Miss Helen of Almonte. Brothers and sisters surviving are Peter of Almonte, Welland of Asparto, Cal; William of Denver, Col Jack and James in Saskatchewan and Albert and Margaret on the homestead. One brother Robert was killed in France during the war. Two sisters (Jessie) Mrs Wm Steele and Jean died a number of years ago. The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon at two o'clock from his late residence, Church street, to the Auld Kirk Cemetery, under the auspices of Morse Lodge A.F. & A.M. Morse, Sask. Officers of Mississippi Lodge, Almonte, will have charge. The sympathy of a host of friends in Almonte and district goes out to the bereaved wife and daughters.

Great Tribute Paid Ramsay Farmer At His Funeral Sunday Afternoon
This part of Lanark County lost one of its most popular and successful citizens on Friday, May 9th, in the death of Albert George Naismith who died in the Rosamond Memorial Hospital, in his 58th year, after a short illness. Mr Naismith was born on the homestead, Ninth Line of Ramsay, in sight of Almonte, a son of the late Peter Naismith and his wife, Catherine Gilmour. A short time after his father's death, he acquired the farm which is a very good one and which he continued to improve in every day during his all too short lifetime. Thirty-two years ago he married Olive May Paul who survives together with two sons and two daughters, namely, Robert of Ramsay, William at home; Mrs Wm Toop (Elsie) of Ottawa and Mrs William Endersby (Betty) of Toronto. In his own immediate family there are eight ? James of Vermillion, Alberta; Welland of Esparato, Calf.; John of Calgary; Miss Margaret at home. Deceased ? Peter, Lawrence (Tobe) Jessie (Mrs Wm Steele) and Jean. Mr Naismith's death came as a great shock and sorrow to a wide circle of friends. Whether he felt well during the winter no one knows outside of his immediate family because he wasn't a complainer. He was the jolly, jaunty type of man whom everyone likes to meet, especially those who felt down a little themselves. He was always cheerful, well informed and a good conversationalist. He knew his business as a dairy farmer, specializing in Ayshires, and it was a pleasure to hear him talk on the subject of agriculture in which he was most interested. Some years ago, in addition to running his farm with which the two boys were associated, "Ab" decided to take on the district agency for the Massey-Harris Co. His warehouse was next the Gazette office and the staff of this newspaper never had a better of more congenial neighbour. He was eminently successful in his work as an agent but his heart was in the farm. he had it in mind to turn the agency over the elder boy an when he declared he would rather farm Albert gave up the sales business with no regret at all. He took little active interest in public or semi public affairs. His heart was at home because he was a great family man. He loved to talk with the boys and girls of the immediate circle and he welcomed the friends who passed the gate and traversed the one lane up to his home. He was a director of North Lanark Agricultural Society for a few years but outside of that he attended strictly to his own affairs. He was Conservative in politics. The funeral of the late Mr Naismith, held last Sunday afternoon was one of the largest ever seen in Lanark County. When the head of the cortege reached the turn to the Auld Kirk Cemetery, at MacDonald's service station, the tail of the sad procession was still coming out his gate about two miles distant. Services were conducted at the home and graveside by Rev H.C. Wolfraim, pastor of the Almonte United Church. Pallbearers were Robt Toshack, Jas Steele, Peter Syme, Melville Paul, Clifford Rivington and Charles Black, the latter from Carleton Place. As might be expected, there was a profusion of floral offerings from organizations and individuals. It is no exaggeration to say that the death of Albert Naismith at a comparatively early age is one of those sad things that mortals have to contend with in this strange life. He was full of energy, cheerfulness and good-fellowship and had attained a position in his career where he could sit back and rest on the oars while the boys carried on. One of them was on a farm on his own a short distance away and the other was at home. But this rest after toll was not to be. Mr Naismith will be sorely missed by all who knew him. There were many at the funeral from adjacent towns and Ottawa, and Mr and Mrs Sam McKee and son, Don Don McKee and Mrs Porterfield from Toronto.

The sympathy for Mr and Mrs Andrew Dunlop aroused by the serious illness of their daughter, Delice Bennett, was deepened when she succumbed to the disease and passed away on Friday of last week. She had been taken ill but two weeks before with a malignant brain trouble, and though everything possible was done for her the progress of the disease could not be stayed, and the end came. The deceased was the sixth daughter of Mr and Mrs Dunlop, and was almost seventeen years of age. She was of a bright and happy disposition and was a favourite with a very many, all of whom sincerely regret such a sudden termination of so promising a young life. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon, and was one of the largest seen in Almonte for some time. Besides her father and mother there are six sisters and two brothers left to mourn her demise. These are Mrs L. Thompson of Fort William; Mrs H. Reynolds and Mrs Hobbs Ley of Calgary; Mrs W. Porterfield of Carleton Place; Misses Olga and Roberta at home, and Messrs Frank at Hartford, Conn., and Russell at Edmonton,
