    A former University of Alberta student, Research Council of Alberta geochemist and one of the few deaf people to hold a doctorate has died.
    Dr. Donald James Kidd, 44, assistant professor of physics at Gallaudet College in Washington, D.C., died suddenly of a heart attack at his home.
    Deaf from infancy, Dr. Kidd was born in Nordegg, AB., the son of Mr. and Mrs. George H. Kidd.
    He received his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Toronto and also took graduate studies at the University of Alberta.

    He was with the Research Council, of Alberta from 1956 to 1961 and previously served as a research geologist with the Geophysical Engineering and Surveys Co. in Ontario and as an exploration and consulting geologist for the Arctic Institute of North America.
    Dr. Kidd joined Gallaudet College in 1961 as an instructor in mathematics. He became an assistant professor of physics two years ago.
    The deaf scientist also served on the faculty of the college's summer science institute for science teachers of the deaf in 1965 and 66.
    He was a member of the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario and of the National Association of Geology Teachers and a fellow of the Geological Association of Canada. He contributed reports and research papers to publications such as American Mineralogist and The Arctic.

    Dr. Kidd was active in organizations of the deaf in Canada and the United States, taught an adult deaf Sunday School in Canada and served as an itinerant lay preacher for the Ontario Deaf Mission . three winters.
    Dr. Kidd is survived by his wife, Mary; a son and a daughter, his mother and a brother. Burial was in the Lincoln Memorial Cemetery in Washington.
