James D. Robertson
Mr James D. Robertson, an old resident of Ramsay township, passed away Wednesday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs Wm Anderson, aged 85 years. Mr Robertson was a native of the township and lived all his life there. His wife who before her marriage was Sarah Jane Scott predeceased him by about eight years. He is survived by four sons and five daughters. The sons are William and Ernest, in Ramsay, George and Everard in Saskatchewan; the daughters, Mrs Elizabeth McLean in Saskatchewan, Mrs Hare, in Toronto, Mrs Wm Anderson, Mrs Alton Matthews and Miss Ethel Robertson of Ramsay. One brother also survive, Mrs Arch Robertson, of Carleton Place, and one sister, Mrs Charles McNeill, of Clayton. Also 23 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Mr Robertson was a member of Bethany Church, Almonte, and an elder. The funeral took place Thursday afternoon to the 8th line Ramsay cemetery.

Mrs T.W. Kellough Is Called By Death
Former Resident of Clayton Mourned By Many Throughout District
Another link of the older generation was severed in the death of Margaret Scott Robertson, at the R.M. Hospital on Tuesday, March 27th. News of her demise occasioned widespread regret in town and district. Deceased was born in Ramsay on December 16th, 1866, the daughter of the late James Robertson and Jeannette Watt. In 1887 she married Thomas W. Kellough who predeceased her on November 26, 1918. To this union were born five children, all surviving: Ernest of Saskatchewan; Clarence of Union Hall; Jeanette, Mrs Chas Giles, Union Hall; Louise, Mrs Harold Robertson of Almonte, and Wilbert of Detroit, Mich. Also surviving are three brothers, William of Halleybury; Ernest of Saskatchewan and George of Union Hall. All of the deceased's married life was spent at Clayton where she was loved by all. An active member of the Clayton church and a valued member of the community she leaves many pleasant memories. After the death of her husband, Mrs Kellough came to Almonte, to reside, where she was a member of Bethany United church. The funeral services were held today (Thursday) from the home of her son-in-law, Mr Harold Robertson, 10th concession, Ramsay, at 1.15 p.m. thence to Bethany United church where funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m., with Rev C.D. McLellan officiating. The lengthy cortege and numerous floral tributes testified to the general esteem in which deceased was held. The pallbearers were six nephews: Kenneth Robertson, George Robertson Russell Robertson, Alfred James, Percy Dunlop, and Carl Riley. Interment was made in the Auld Kirk cemetery.

UNION HALL LADY FATALLY HURT AS TEAM RUNS AWAY
Mrs. Alfred James Was Driving to Almonte When Tragic Accident Happened People of this district learned with deep regret, last Sunday, of the death that morning in Rosamond Memorial Hospital of Mrs. Alfred James, Union Hall, following injuries sustained Saturday afternoon when, the sleigh in which she was riding crashed into a telephone pole. Mrs. James was driving into town with her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. George Robertson. At the top of the steep hill, Almonte street, the team took fright and started to run. The driver shouted to the women to jump. Mr. and Mrs. Robertson succeeded in getting out of the sleigh but for some reason Mrs. James was unable to do so. Half way down the steep grade the sleigh hit a telephone pole and then crashed into a second one. The horses broke free from the vehicle, one being stopped on the hill and the other continuing its mad career until stopped in front of the O'Brien Theater by Elijah Ledgerwood. It was dragging one rein and the neck yoke. Mr. Ledgerwood caught it and made a halter of the dangling line. Mrs. James was rushed to the Rosamond Memorial Hospital where an examination revealed a broken hip and arm and serious internal injuries. It was realized from the first that she could not recover and death ensued next morning. Mrs. James was one of the most popular women in the Union Hall section and her tragic death cast a gloom over the whole district. The accident occurred at the most dangerous point in the town and it was utterly impossible for the driver to maintain any control over the team as it started to run down the steep grade. At the time of the accident the three passengers in the sleigh were on their way to visit Mrs. Margaret Kellough, a sister of Mr. Robertson and Mrs. James who was seriously ill. The late Mrs. James whose maiden name was Jennie Robertson, was born in the Union Hall section and had lived there all her life. She was a daughter of the late James Robertson and Janet Watt, pioneer residents of Ramsay. Surviving besides her husband, Alfred James, are five daughters, Mabel (Mrs. Gardiner) of Carleton Place; Ella, Stamford, Conn.; Anna, Mrs. Arnold Bach, New Canaan, U.S.; Laura and Winnifred at home and one son Alfred at home. She is also mourned by one sister Mrs. Margaret Kellough and three brothers, George Robertson, Union Hall; Ernest of Swift Current, Saskatchewan, and William of Haileybury. Mrs. James' funeral was held Tuesday afternoon and was largely attended by friends and relatives from all parts of North Lanark and from points as far distant as Perth. Service was conducted at the home in the James Settlement by Rev. J. W. R. Meakin of St. George's Anglican Church, Clayton. Interment was made in St. George's Cemetery, Union Hall. The pallbearers were Kenneth, George and Russell Robertson, Benjamin, Edward and John James. Many beautiful floral offerings testified to the high esteem in which the late Mrs. James was held.

The Late Mrs James Allen
A very sad and sudden death occurred on Tuesday in the passing of Mrs Allen, Santiago street, Although she had not been in the best of health for several months her condition was not considered particularly serious. In fact only last week she was away on a visit to friends returning owing to an intimation she received that her son Sergt N.C. Allen, was coming home on Saturday for a couple of days' leave from his duties at Camp Borden. She met her son at the station that day and was her ususal bright self. On Sunday afternoon a severe collapse manifested itself and her condition gradually became worse until about noon on Tuesday when the doors of death were opened and the spirit took its flight. Deceased was born Anna Margaret Kellough, a daughter of the late James Kellough of Lanark township, on May 5, 1861. She was married to James Allen, taking up her residence on a farm in Ramsay township where they resided until about sixteen years ago when they moved to Carleton Place with their family. Besides her husband deceased leaves one daughter, Olive, at home, and two sons, Newton Clifford, B.F. and P.T. instructor, Camp Borden, Ont, and Wm Osmond, at Cobalt, Ont. She also leaves four brothers; Thomas G., at Halpenny; James, at Blakeney; Robert G., at Appleton and William J., at Carleton Place. There were two sisters; Agnes R., (the late Mrs D. McNabb,) who died at Carleton Place in May, 1902, and Mary C., who passed away October, 1885. The funeral took place to the 8th line cemetery

Robert George Kellough
Almonte lost one of its elderly citizens Friday, Feb 29th, in the person of Robert George Kellough. He was in his 87th year and had lived in Almonte since his retirement from the farm 25 years ago. Although he suffered a slight stroke some time ago Mr Kellough was in good health up to a few days before his death when a heavier and more serious visitation of the same malady brought his long life to a close. Deceased was born in Ramsay Township on July 10th, 1865, a son of the late James Kellough and his wife, Jane Gemmill. He married Margaret Brown Young of Arnprior who predeceased him in 1945. For some years Mr Kellough farmed on the first line of Ramsay, adjacent to the old homestead and in 1909 he removed to the farm on the twelfth line where he continued to live until his retirement. Mr Kellough was an industrious man and got along well with all his neighbours and friends. He never took part in municipal politics or public affairs but for all that he was a sociable person who was pleasant to meet and highly respected. He leaves three sons and one daughter, namely, J. Victor of Ramsay; John Y. of Cobourg; Earle G. of Dunnville and Miss Margaret H., supervisor of the hospital at Port Hope. There are also ten grandchildren and one great grandson. Mr Kellough was a member of Bethany United Church. The funeral was held on Sunday afternoon to the Auld Kirk Cemetery from the Comba Funeral Home. Services were conducted by Rev H. C. Wolfraim. Pallbearers were: Oswald Allen, Kenneth Robertson, Harvey Young, William McArton, J.B. Neilson and Allie Stewart. Among many floral offerings were pieces from the Port Hope Hospital Board, the staff of the hospital and special nurses, W.N. Moore, Mayor of the town; the staff of Dunnville High School and the Ralston Purina Co.

Dr. Ernest Welland Gemmill

Medical practitioner in Toronto, Dr. Ernest Welland Gemmill, died Saturday, February 10th at the home of his son, Rev. Claude D. Gemmill, aged 79 years. The late Dr. Gemmill was born in Horton Township, near Renfrew, a son of the late John Gemmill and his wife, Ann Jane Coulter. When he was an infant the family moved to Clayton where they resided for eleven years and thence to Almonte. Following his graduation from McGill University he practised in Almonte for a short time, coming to Pakenham in 1890, where he practised for 29 years. He then went to Toronto where he carried on in the east end for 25 years until he became ill last August. In his younger years he was an enthusiastic curler and cricketer. He was a devout member of St. Mark's Anglican Church where he took an active part in all organizations. Surviving are his widow, the former Miss Edna Gibson of 299 Kingswood Rd. two sons, Rev. Claude Gemmill and John Gemmill, one daughter, Betty Gemmill, all of Toronto. Of a family of six, he is survived by two brothers, Rev. Wm. Gemmill of Victoria and Edwin M. Gemmill of Lindsay, Ont., one sister, Miss Catherine Gemmill of Victoria, B. C. One son Ted, died in the last Great War. Mr. Wm. Banning of Almonte is cousin. Interment was made at Toronto.

For many years had conducted a woodworking business in Penticton. He came to the valley about 20 years previous, initially on a stretcher to Naramata for his health. After recovering somewhat he returned to Winnipeg, MB where he experienced a second collapse after which the family moved to Penticton.
In Penticton he operated as an auctioneer, also as a wheelright and wagon body business on Ellis Street.
Mourned by two sons, Clifford and Harold, predeceased by Dave who was killed on the Peachland-Westbank road some years previous. Brothers and sisters living in Seattle. Funeral from Howson's parlours, Rev. C.A.C. Story officiating.
Pall bearers, all old friends, were RG Keys, A Glen, Barney Wolfe, T. Graham, George Preston and A. E. Moore.

About 33 years go he moved to the West. His wife predeceased him six months ago. Surviving are three sons, Wilbert, Nelson and Kenneth, all of Enchant, Alta., two daughters, Mrs. Earl Wagness of Barons, Alta. and Mrs. Leonard Downing of Medicine Hat, Alta. There are also five brothers, all In the West, and three sisters. Mrs. George Bolger of Clayton, Mrs. Thomas McMunn of Union Hall, and Mrs. Wm. Nolan of Vlrden, Man.

The death occurred suddenly in Vancouver on Sunday, Jan 20 of Archie D. Robertson. He was a son of the late John Robertson and his wife, Jennie Patterson. Born on a farm in this district, he attended the Public School at Union Hall and also assisted at farm work. When a young man he operated a threshing mill and later went to Manitoba where he worked at farming. Afterward he was engage as foreman of a road gang at Edmonton, which built several highways such as the Alaska Highway. A few years ago he moved to Vancouver where he kept a rooming house until his death. Archie was a favorite of many, kind and thoughtful; he had many friends wherever he went. He visited friends here last summer and was in perfect health. He was twice married. Surviving are one brother, Herbert A. Robertson of Fertile, Sask.; two sisters, Mrs. T. McMunn, Carleton Place and Mrs. Geo. Bolger of Clayton. The funeral was held in Vancouver on Friday

R. # 2, Almonte and Arnold of Calgary, Alberta, and two daughters, Eleanor White of Carleton Place and Lena Toole of Toronto. She was predeceased by her husband and six brothers and four sisters. Funeral services were conducted May 29 from the Alan R. Barker Funeral Home with Rev. H. Brown officiating. Residents of Almonte and Appleton community were greatly shocked to learn of the sudden death of William Henry Robertson, eldest son of the late James D. and Mrs Robertson, on Tuesday, February 21st. Mr Robertson would have been 62 years of age on the 12th of March. Forty years ago deceased married Alice Emmeline Rae. Surviving are his widow, four sons, Dr Bertram of Shellbrooke, Sask.; Dr. Russell of Preeceville, Sask.; Harold of the 11th line of Ramsay and Arthur at home. Left to mourn Mr Robertson's loss are also three brothers and five sisters, George of Arras B.C.; Edward at Vegreville, Alta.; Ernest on the homestead; Elizabeth, Mrs McLean, Edmonton; Miss Ethel, Ramsay; Sadie, Mrs Haire, Toronto; Edith, Mrs Wm Anderson, 9th line Ramsay; Eva, Mrs Alton Matthews, 9th line of Ramsay. The deceased was a Liberal in politics, and for four years served on the Ramsay Council. For many years he was president of the Farmers' Club, and also a director of the N.L.A.S. Formerly Mr Robertson attended St Andrew's Church of Almonte of which he was an elder as was his father before him. Latterly he was an elder and the treasurer of the United Church of Appleton. Mr Robertson was always ready to help in any good work, a man of ability, a good farmer and a good citizen. Fifteen years ago Mr Robertson bought the farm on the 11th line of Ramsay, formerly occupied by Mr Peter Stewart, Toronto. The funeral will take place on Saturday afternoon, February 25th, at 2.30 p.m. from his late residence, 11th line Ramsay to Auld Kirk Cemetery. Service will he held at the home at 2 o'clock.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon for the late W.H. Robertson wellknown Ramsay farmer of the Appleton district, who died suddenly on the preceding Tuesday. Mr Robertson was one of the outstanding farmer of Ramsay township, had long taken an active interest in public affairs and his sudden passing at the early age of 62 was a great shock to his wide circle of friends and acquaintances. In his time Mr Robertson had served on the township council and was also assessor for Ramsay. He was interested in the annual fair of the North Lanark Agricultural Society and was a director in the livestock branch. At the time of his death he was an elder in the Appleton United Church and an active officer in the Ramsay Farmers' Club. Deceased was the eldest son of the late James D. Robertson and Sarah Jane Scott and was born 62 years ago near Clayton. Forty years ago he married Alice Emmeline Rea, of Ramsay. For a time they lived in Almonte, after which they settled on a farm in Ramsay where they have since resided. Surviving are his widow, four sons. Harold Robertson, of Ramsay; Dr Bertram Robertson of Shellbrooke, Sask.; Dr Russell Robertson, of Preeceville, Sask., and Arthur Robertson, a student in the Kemptville Agricultural school. Metcalfe of Ottawa. Friends and relatives from a distance who attended the funeral were Dr B. Deceased was born near Clayton Village and attended the Almonte High School. For some years Miss Robertson taught school but about 30 years ago she was stricken with rheumatism which developed into arthritis and has been a great suffer ever since. Surviving are four sisters and three brothers. ?/b?The funeral of the late Miss Ethel Robertson which took place last Friday was very largely attended, not only by a large circle of relatives and friends but by many from a distance, whose deep sympathy had been excited for the suffer, who through so many years had courageously borne a burden of suffering without hope of recovery. We extend sincere sympathy to Mr and Mrs Wm Anderson, Mr and Mrs Alton Matthews and other friends, who so devotedly ministered to the comfort of the deceased. The sudden death of Mr W.H. Robertson a year and a half ago made a great blank in her life. Mr Robertson made her welfare one of the primary objects of his life. The ministers in attendance were Rev Edwards, Baptist minister of Carleton Place, assisted by Rev McLauchlin of Trinity, and Rev Aird of the Baptist Church, Almonte. The pallbearers were Messrs. Harold, Arthur, George and Roy Robertson. Among those from a distance who attended the funeral were Mr Archie Gemmill, Mrs Ferrier and Mrs Moore from Renfrew; Misses Ruth and Mary Robertson from Peace River District and Many from Perth and vicinity.

Mrs Alton Matthews passed away in the Carleton Place Memorial Hospital on Thurs. Aug. 17, after a lengthy period of ill health. Mrs Matthews who was in her 76th year was the former Eva Anna Robertson. For many years she and her husband farmed on the 9th line of Ramsay Township until they retired to Carleton Place several years ago. Besides her husband she leaves one son and two daughter: Allan of Hamilton; Ruth, Mrs Start McArton of Stirling and Kay, Mrs Earl Lowe of King. She is survived also by one sister Sadie, Mrs Wm Hare, Toronto and one brother, Mr Ernest Robertson of Almonte. The funeral service was held on Sat., Aug. 19 at 2 p.m. at the Fleming Bros Funeral Home, Carleton Place and interment was in the Auld Kirk Cemetery, Almonte. Rev L.M. Smith, minister of St Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Carleton Place officiated.

The funeral of Mrs Alton W. Matthews took place on Saturday afternoon from the Fleming Bros Funeral Home, Lake avenue west, where service was conducted by Rev L.M. Smith. Interment was made in Auld Kirk Cemetery. Mrs Matthews died in hospital on August 17 after a lengthy illness. She was in her 76th year and had resided on Sarah street. The former Eva Anna Robertson, she was born in 1885 in Ramsay, daughter of the late Mr and Mrs James Robertson. She was educated in Almonte and attended the Baptist Church here. She was married to Mr Matthews in Ramsay in December, 1911. Surviving besides her husband are a son, Alan R. Matthews of Hamilton; two sisters, Ruth, Mrs Stuart McArton of Stirling and Kathleen, Mrs Earl Lowe of King City, Ont; a brother Ernest Robertson of Almonte and a sister, Sadie, Mrs William Haire of Toronto. Ernest John Robertson, Country Street, Almonte, died December 20 in St; Catherine's General Hospital at the age of 86. He had been ill for two months.
Born May 1, 1894, Mr. Robertson was the son of the late James D. Robertson and Sarah Jane Scott, also of Almonte. He grew up and was educated here and until his retirement had farmed on the 9th. concession of Ramsay township.
In August 1922, Mr. Robertson was married in Almonte to Lizzie Lindsay (Snedden), who predeceased him in 1974. Mr. Robertson was a senior elder of the Almonte United Church.
He is survived by his daughter Elizabeth Marie Sexton of St. Catharines, three grandchildren, Lauraine (Mrs Bernard Knelson), John Ernest and Andrea Sexton, and by ttwo great grandchildren, Nathan and Ryan Knelson. Mr Robertson also had three brothers and five sisters who all predeceased him.
A public funeral was held December 22 from the Kerry Funeral Home. Rev John Lougheed conducted the service. Burial took place at the Auld Kirk Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Bert Lowry, Robert Anderson, Angus McCormick, Donald Buchan, Robert Andrews and Boyd Jamieson.

Mary Lauretta (Laura) Miller passed away in the Carleton Place and District Memorial Hospital on Monday, November 27th, after a short illness. Born September 16, 1881, she was the eldest in the family of the late William Robertson and Mary Ann Scott of Union Hall and the beloved wife of the late William J. Miller. Mrs. Miller is survived by her six children, Elsie (Mrs. Samuel J. Gardiner), Carleton Place: W. Bert, Almonte, R.R. 2; Agnes (Mrs. Eldin Currie). Almonte; John R., Almonte, R.R. 2; Leonard S., Iroquois; Raymond S.B., St Catherines; 19 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren; one sister, Nellie (Mrs Harry McIntosh), Perth; a brother, Gordon Robertson Salmon Arm, B.C. She was predeceased by a brother Roy of Union Hall in 1971. The funeral was held from the Kerry Funeral Home, Almonte, on Wednesday, November 29th. The service was conducted by the Rev Gordon C. ALFRED JAMES
The death of Benjamin Alfred James, prominent dairy farmer of R.R. 2 Almonte, occurred at his home on Tuesday, February 24, 1976. He was 64. Born on the family farm on May 22, 1911, he was a son of the late Alfred James and his wife, Janet Kyle Robertson. Mr. James was a member of St. George's Anglican Church, Clayton; a member of Barron River Hunt Club, and was active in community and church affairs. In earlier years he excelled at sports, especially as a member of the Union Hall Tigers ball team. He was married on August 10, 1946, at St. Mark's Anglican Church, Pakenham, to the former Amy Laura Bourk, who survives. Also Surviving are a son, Alfred, Richard, at home; three daughters, Catherine Anne (Mrs. Donald Cochran), R.R. 1 Almonte; Janet Mary and Pauline Amy, at home, and four sisters, Mabel, (Mrs. William Gardiner), Almonte; Ann (Mrs. Arthur Bach), New Canaan, Connecticut; Laura Mrs. George Rodger), Almonte, and Winnifred (Mrs. John Hammond), Westfield, Massachusetts. He was predeceased by a sister, Major Ella E. James of Woodbury, Connecticut. The body rested at the Kerry Funeral Home, Almonte, and was conveyed to St. George's Church, Clayton, on Friday, February 27, where the funeral service was conducted by Rev. Harry Brown. Burial will take place at St. George's Cemetery in the spring. Pallbearers were William Halpenny, Frank James, Keith McMunn, , Maynard McIntosh, Harold James and Bert Thompson.

James Victor Kellough
On July 6, 1989, J. Victor Kellough died in Almonte General Hospital following a three and one-half year hospitalization. He was 90 years old. Born March 30, 1899, on the first concession of Ramsay, he moved with his family in 1909 to Spruce Hill Farm on the Twelfth Concession of Ramsay, where he resided until his retirement in 1983. He was the son to the late Robert G. Kellough and his late wife Margaret Young. Mr Kellough was a graduate of the class of 1924 of Kemptville Agricultural School, which was the second graduating class of that school. He has a keen interest in agriculture and Holstein cattle, and had one of the first 200,000 pound producing cows in Eastern Ontario. He was active in farm organizations in earlier years, and held offices in Farm Forum, United Co-op and various other farm organizations. In later years he was keenly interested in the North Lanark Historical Society. Mr Kellough took an active part in his local church and was a life member of the session of the Almonte United Church. Mr Kellough was married in June 1926 to Gladys Cynthia Paul in St James Anglican Church, Carleton Place and together they farmed at Spruce Hill until her death in February 1982. He is survived by four daughters: Mrs. Douglas (Jean) King, Cambridge; Mrs. Jack (Florence) Virgin, Almonte; Mrs. Harold (Cynthia) Stuart, Simcoe; and Mrs. Ronald (Carol) James, Perth. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one sister, Margaret Kellough of Toronto. Besides his late wife, he was predeceased by two brothers, John Y. Kellough and Earle G. Kellough, and one sister, Jean. Visitation was held at the C.R. Gamble Funeral Home in Almonte July 7, followed by the funeral in the Gamble Funeral Home Chapel July 8. The service was conducted by Rev. Clifford Evans, assisted by Rev. Edward Colwell and Rev. Douglas Kellough, a nephew of the deceased. Six grandchildren acted as pallbearers: Brett James, Colin and Cynthia King, Terry Stuart, Paul and David Virgin. Interment was in the family plot at the Auld Kirk Cemetery on the Eighth Line of Ramsay.
