?/b?Nicholas Garland, one of the old pioneers of the Township of Goulbourn, departed this life on Saturday the 11th. of December, after a very short illness which he bore with exemplary patience and resignation to the will of God. He was eighty-two years and nine months months old, and was in the sixty-second year of his married life. His wife survives him, and he leaves ten children, six sons and four daughters. His youngest son, James Garland, is the only one remaining on the old homestead. Mr. Nicholas Garland had fifty-one grand-children and three great-grand children.?b?
?/b?The remains were interred at Ashton on Monday, 13th inst., attended by a large funeral. Rev. S. Tighe, B.A., preached an interesting and eloquent sermon on the occasion. The deceased emigrated from the County of Kilkenny, Ireland, to Upper Canada in 1821. He was a magistrate of the County of Carleton for more than twenty-six years; he also held other municipal offices in the Township of Goulbourn, which he filled with entire satisfaction to the community.

Ashton, 14th. - It is with deep regret I have to record the death of one of the oldest inhabitants of this part of the county, Mr. Nicholas Garland, who departed this life on the 11th December, at his residence on the ninth line of Goulbourn, after a very short illness. The deceased had arrived at the ripe age of 83 years, and had held the position of Justice of the Peace for over 30 years Mr. Garland was held the highest esteem by all his friends and acquaintances which was manifested by the large attendance at his funeral on Monday, the 13th. The Rev. Mr. Tighe, B A, Rector of Franktown, preached his funeral sermon in Christ Church.

James KEYES came to Canada from Carlow, Carlow County, Ireland in the year 1818 and
settled in the Township of Beckwith, County of Lanark, Ontario. He was one of the early settlers and had the distinction of erecting the first shingled house in that township. In 1822 he married
Hester GARLAND.

Hester GARLAND was the eldest daughter of John GARLAND who came from Leighlinbridge, Carlow County, Ireland, this being the same neighborhood from which James KEYES came. He first settled in Derry, Beckwith Township, County of Lanark but later moved to Gouldborne Township, Carleton County, residing near Dwyer Hill. From an old registry book in Leighlinbridge, Ireland it is recorded that John GARLAND frequently held the position of Church Warden. Also that he married Eliner BUTLER, who was descendant from the Duke of Ormond who was beheaded in the reign of Queen Ann. They had fifteen children and left Ireland in 1819, except the two eldest boys who came to Canada at a later date. The names of the family being; Thomas, Patrick, Richard, Nicholas, William, James, Edward, John, Hester, Betty, Margaret, Maria, Anne, Ellen and Matilda. James KEYES came to Bruce County with his family, with the exception of two girls, Mary and Clara, in 1855 and settled on Lot 5, Concession 17, Greenock Township. Hester died in the autumn of 1858 and James in may of 1868. They are both buried in the English Cemetery in Cargill, Ontario.

From Unknown Newspaper: "Edgewood Farm, Marlboro, February 2--It is with sorrow we chronicle the calling away from amongst us of one of our oldest and most respected citizens, Mr. William Garland, whose name was fimiliar to nearly every one in th county of Carleton, passed peacefully away on the 29th January, 1892, in the 83rd year of his age. He was born in Ireland in 1809, came to Canada with his parents when 11 years old. the family consisted of 16 persons, viz. father, mother, eight sons and six daughters; each of the children upon reaching maturity married. twelve settled in the county of Carleton and two in the county of Lanark, where the scriptural injunction as complied with to multiply and replenish the earth. four of the brothers died between the ages of 82 and 84 years. "Mr. Garland chose farming as his vocation. He first settled on a farm in the township of Goulbourn. Not finding the land what he anticipated he moved to the township of North Gower, then being opened up. He secured a farm upon which he lived until 1883. At that time he and his wife feeling old age coming upon them, resolved that the care and exertion of conducting a farm was too much for them. He disposed of it and procured a house in the villiage of North Gower, to use his own words "within the shadow of the church" where he remained eight years when again the feeling overcame him that the care or even the management of a house was too much for them at their advanced age and decided to board. He found a suitable place on the farm known as "Edgewood Dairy farm" in Marlboro adjoining North Gower, owned by John Mccordick, Esq., whose wife was a favorite niece. The old homestead being built of stone, large and airy and surrounded by beautiful evergreens, they hoped to spend their summer months pleasantly, but in that they have been disappointed. Their stay with Mr. Mccordick was most agreeable, and nearly his last words were in acknowledgment of the kindness he had received. Mr. McCordick in conversation, after his death, said, that in his illness he never heard him make a complaint, that his object seemed to be to give as little trouble as possible. "The funeral was conducted from Edgewood Farm on sunday and was tehlargest seen in that locality for a long time upwards of 60 teams formed the cortege. The sad procession was led by rev. robt. Atkinson incumbent, North Gower, to the old stone built church in that village, in the shadow of which he lived for so many ears. During the half mile before reaching the church theold bell tolled forth the solemn warning that a member of this earthly habitation had been called to his heavenly home. Rev. Mr. Atkinson conducted a most impressive service. the choir sang with organ accompaniment several hymns suitable to the occasion. Rev. Mr. Atkinson, under whose charge he has been for some time, preached a most impressive sermon. His words of comfort to the sorrowing friends were such as to give hope for a glorious resurrection. His prayers for the bereaved widow, who had lost one who had been a partner for about three-score years, caused the eyes of strong men to become bedimmed with tears. Service over the peocession re-formed and wneded its solemn way to the old churchyard at Wellinfton in which stands the little white church surrounded by hundreds of white marble monuments each one telling its own story. It may be remarked that the Wellington cemetery or churchyard, as it is called, is strikingly beautiful, sloping back to the west from the high road, displaying its solemn contents to the passers-by, while close on the eastern side flows the Rideau river in its silent meanderings, serene in its peacefulness fearing, as it were, to disturb the quiet dead. "In a grave near the summit they laid him and the Rev. Mr. Atkinson, who travelled these long miles over bad roads, was at this post to perform the last rites of the church, which he did most solemnly, while around the grave for the time it took to offer up his solemn offering of hopeful words every head remained uncovered and silent awe prevailed."

At the taking of the 1881 Census, Thomas aged 60, widowed and employed as a school teacher, was living with his brother John Garland aged 56, John's wife Ann aged 53, and their children Martha aged 26, Eliza aged 24, Nicholas aged 22, and Mary aged 18, in Goulbourn, Carleton County, Ontario.

Thomas died at the Asylum for the Insane at Portsmouth, Frontenac County, Ontario. The cause of death listed on the death register was "exhaustion of mania."

January 28 - Mr. John Garland died at his residence on the 11th line of Goulburn on the 26th inst. Deceased was well known in the county, being of such a disposition as to make and hold friends.

He was a man of powerful physique, standing over six feet in height, and weighing over 250 pounds. In politics he was an ardent Conservative, until the Jesuit question came up, when he endorsed the Equal Rights platform.

His parents were among the first settlers of the township of Goulburn, his mother dying about two months ago, at the advanced age of 93 years. Four daughters and one son are left to mourn over his demise.

His popularity as a citizen was evidenced by over 100 vehicles attending his funeral, the services of which were conducted by Rev. Mr. Coleman at St. John's, Ashton, in the absence of the incumbent, Rev. Mr. Robertson.

J. M. Garland

One of the most prominent and worthy citizens of Ottawa has passed away in the person of Mr. John M. Garland, who died at 3 o'clock this morning at the family residence, 40 Nepean Street. The cause of death was paralysis, from which the deceased has suffered for several years. About four and a half years ago he had the first stroke, and a year later the second, since which time he has been an invalid. He was able, however to be around and yesterday was out driving., a favorite recreation with him. He seemed to be in a brighter mood yesterday than usual, and only a few minutes before passing away he joked with his nurse. about three o'clock the third and final stroke came, and almost immediately afterwards the spirit took its flight.

Mr. Garland was a man rich in good works, and he left a name that will long be cherished by the citizens of Ottawa. He was a charitably disposed man, and many were the acts of kindness that he performed. He was prominently identified with organised charity and rendered signal service in that regard. He was president for a number of years of the Perley Home, and when because of ill health he was no longer to take a prominent part in directing the affairs of the home, the board expressed its appreciation of his splendid services by making him honorary president. He had also been president of the Protestant Home for the aged.

In business circles Mr. Garland was much respected for his sterling integrity, for his energy and for his enterprise He was a member and an ex-president of the Ottawa Board of Trade, and a striking monument to Mr. Garland's executive ability is the present flourishing board.

Several years ago he reorganized the Board, which had been in a moribund state for some time, and became the first president.

Mr. Garland was the son of the late Patrick Garland, and was born near Ottawa 70 years and one month ago. When he was eleven years old his father died, and Mrs. Garland moved her family to western Ontario. When nineteen years old Mr. Garland entered into partnership with his uncle a Caledonia, Ontario, where the firm conducted a very successful general store for several years. In 1862 he decided to start an exclusive dry goods business in Ottawa, and formed in that year a partnership with the late Alexander Mutchmor. Mr. Mutchmor looked after the business in Ottawa while Mr. Garland did the buying, besides looking after his business in Ottawa, which he conducted until 1864.

In 1873 Mr. Garland stared by himself the wholesale business of which he was at the time of his death the senior partner.

In 1893 he erected the present handsome warehouse at the corner of Queen and O'Connor streets.

Mr. Garland was twice married, his first wife being Miss Isabel McKinnon, daughter of the late Neil McKinnon, and his second wife Mrs. Emily Maud McKinnon, daughter of the late Dr. McKinnon of Caledonia. He is survived by a widow, two daughters, the misses Garland, at home; a son, Mr. John L. Garland, of McLaren Street, and a member of the firm of John M. Garland, Son & Company, and by two brothers, Nicholas of Toronto, and Thomas of Anaconda, B.C.

Mr. Garland was a member of the Bank street Presbyterian Church, and was an elder for 33 years. he was also a member of the Rideau Canoe Club.

The funeral will be held on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. from the family residence to Beechwood cemetery.

William Garland Kidd began his teaching career in 1855 in Lanark County, Ontario. In 1956, he was teaching at a school near Walkerton, Ontario. He returned to school himself and graduated from the Toronto Normal School in 1859. From there, he went to Fergus, Ontario where he eventually was in charge of the school there. In 1872 he received his certificate as an Inspector from the Board of Examiners, enabling him to become an Inspector of Schools in Ontario. Not long after, William and his family moved to Kingston, Ontario where William was employed as the principal first at Johnson Street School and then at the Wellington Street School, Kingston, Ontario. Around 1875, William became the Inspector of Schools for theKingston/Frontenac area.
William retired in 1909.

William married Lenora McGrath in 1861 in Nichol Township, Wellington County, Ontario, Canada. Lenora was born on 11 Jul 1843; died on 18 Mar 1931 in Illinois, United States; was buried in Cataraqui Cemetery, Kingston, Frontenac County, Ontario, Canada. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Carp Review - November 8, 1917 - Patrick Garland Dead

The death occurred on Thursday morning last, Nov. 1st, at his residence, 97 Sherwood St., Ottawa, of Mr. Patrick Garland, aged sixty-eight years. The deceased was born at Dwyer Hill, Carleton Co., but for the past thirty years has resided in Ottawa. For years he was in the mercantile business, but of late had been an employee of the government printing bureau.

He is survived by his widow, one daughter, Frances, and four sons, Robert A., of Carberry, Man., Austin, William and Roy of Ottawa. Two brothers, Stephen of Dwyer Hill, and Wright of Carberry, Man., also survive.

The funeral was held on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock to St. Luke's Anglican Church, thence to Beechwood cemetery.

Stephen Garland Dies at 93
The death occurred on Wensday night at his home in Richmond, R. R. No. 1, of Stephen Garland, well known farmerof that district, who was 93 years of age. Mr. Garland, the son of John Garland and his wife, the former Mary Ann Wright, was born, educated, and farmed all his life in that district.

He was married in 1886 to Mary Ann Leach, who died in 1924. The survivers are one son, John of Richmond; a daughter, Mrs. Ann Laura Lewis, of Richmond, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

The funeral will be held on Sarurday afternoon, December 1, from his residence to St. Stephen's Anglican Church at two o'clock. Burial will be made in Munster Cemetery.

MLA 1900-1901

Born in Carleton County, Ontario on 4 December 1845 (YEAR IS WRONG), son of John Garland and Mary Ann Wright, brother of Wright Garland, he began his business career in the employ of the dry goods firm Garland & Matchmore of Ottawa. He came to Winnipeg in 1881 where he worked for R.J. Whitla, moving a year later to Portage la Prairie where he established the retail clothing store of W. Garland & Company. He served six times as Mayor of Portage, four of them by acclamation. He was also a town councillor for three years, chairman of the board of works for two years, and one year as chairman of the board of health and charity. He was a charter member of the Portage Board of Trade, of which he was president and vice-president.

He and wife Alice May Howe had three daughters: Elizabeth H. Garland (b 1884), Alice Florence Garland (b 1888), and Mary Ann Garland (b 1890). He was an honorary member of the Independent Order of Foresters.

In poor health, he went to Phoenix, Arizona in October 1901 and died there on 11 November 1901.

Born in Carleton County, Ontario on 4 June 1859, son of John Garland and Mary Ann Wright, he came to Manitoba in March 1880 and arrived by steamboat at Portage la Prairie. He remained there for three years, then moved to Grenfell, NWT [now Saskatchewan] where he stayed for four years, returning to Portage la Prairie in the fall of 1887. He worked there in partnership with his brother William Garland. In 1888, he opened a men's clothing store in Carberry. He sold the store in 1896 and invested in 960 acres of ranch land. In 1899 he sold the ranch and returned to Carberry to purchase the business of Haslam's Clothing & Furnishings. Two years later he sold out and became manager of the Sandford Manufacturing Company. In 1911 he opened a general store in partnership with his son-in-law Benjamin W. Caldwell. In 1914 he was appointed postmaster at Carberry.

On 4 July 1883 he married Emily Mimack. They had four children: Olive Francis Garland, Mary Garland (Mrs. B. W. Caldwell), William Percival Garland, and Ross Garland. He was an active member of the Anglican church and the AF & AM (Carberry Lodge).

A fall down stairs around 1915 left him partially paralyzed. He died at Carberry on 19 July 1922 and was buried in the Carberry Cemetery.
