I was born in Moosomin Saskatchewan, and raised on a farm nearby. I have one sister, Shirley McCormich that lives in Vancouver. The farm was a cattle and grain farm, consisting of 640 acres. I attended a one room school house which was 3 miles from my home, we had to go to school by horse and cutter in the winter and horse and buggy in the summer. During the summer I worked on the farm putting up hay for the cattle and helping with other chores. We had a modern house for the standards of those days, we were the first in the community to have indoor plumbing. Unfortunately, a year after my father modernized our home, our house
burnt down due a malfunctioning gas stove. We lost everything in the fire except for a trunk containing our bathing suits, a blanket and love letters that my Father wrote to my Mother. After several days of sifting through the ashes, my sister Shirley found my Mothers diamond ring. During that winter we lived in a new double garage that was next to the house that burnt. My Father then built a new home during that same year.

When I finished public school I had to board away from home at a small community where I attended High School. After finishing High School I went to Moose Jaw where I took a two year Architectural Technology course. Upon completion I found work with the Saskatchewan Department of Municipal Affairs. I worked three years with that department and then found work with the Regina Branch of Canada Mortgage and Housing. After working there two years I was transferred to the Ottawa office and remained there until retirement in 1997.

James Robbins Kidd (1915-1982) was a Director of the Canadian Association for Adult Education, Secretary-Treasurer of the Social Science Council of Canada and the Humanities Research Council of Canada, a Chairman of the Adult Education Department of the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, and co-founder and Secretary-General of the International Council for Adult Education.

J.R. Kidd was born at Wapella, Saskatchewan and was educated at Sir George Williams University (B.A., 1938), at McGill University (M.A., 1943), and Columbia University (Ed.D., 1947). He had LL.D. degrees bestowed upon him by the University of British Columbia (1961), Concordia University (1968), Trent University (1972), McGill University (1979), Laurentian University (1980), and York University (1981).

From 1935 to 1943, he was Secretary of the Montreal Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) and of the Ottawa YMCA from 1943-1946. He was Associate Director of the Canadian Association for Adult Education (CAAE) from 1947 to 1950, and was its Director from 1951 to 1961. During his time at the CAAE, J.R. Kidd taught several adult education courses at various institutions across Canada including the Ontario College of Education, Toronto, as well as undertaking international consulting work, including work for the University College of the West Indies (1954-1957).

From 1961 to 1965 he was Secretary-Treasurer of the Social Science Council of Canada and the Humanities Research Council of Canada and Executive Secretary of the Overseas Institute of Canada. In 1965-1966 he served as a consultant to the University of Rajasthan, India, and following that, he was hired by the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education as the first Chairman of the Adult Education Department (1966). He occupied this post until 1972, when he stepped down to take the position of Professor in that department, a position he held until his death. He helped to found the International Council for Adult Education (ICAE) in 1973 and served as its Secretary-General until 1980.

J.R. Kidd held numerous other professional positions throughout his career. For instance, he was also President of the World Conference of Adult Education in 1960, Chairman of the International Committee for the Advancement of Adult Education for UNESCO (1961-1966), and National President of the International Co-operation Year (Canada) in 1964-1965. He received the Order of Canada in 1975.

In addition to his various professional positions, J.R. Kidd was also a prolific author in his field, authoring more works about adult education than any other person of his era. One of his books, How Adults Learn, was reissued in several editions as well as being translated into many languages and used as a textbook for adult education around the world.

J.R. Kidd married Margaret Edith Easto in 1941 and they had five children.

James Robbins Kidd, born May 4, 1915 at Wapella, Saskatchewan, was the son of John Kidd and Muriel Robbins. He was educated at Sir George Williams University (B.A. 1938), McGill University (M.A. 1943), and Columbia Universtiy (Ed.D. 1947). Throughout his career he also received Honorary Degrees (LL.D) from the following institutions for his contributions in the field of continuing and adult education: University of British Columbia, Concordia University, Trent University, McGill University, Laurentian University, and York Universtiy. In 1941 he married Margaret Edith Easto and they had 5 children. From 1966 to his death in 1982, Kidd held the position of Chairman of the Adult Education Department at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (O.I.S.E.). He is the author of several publications including: "Adult Education in the Canadian University," "Adult Education in the Caribbean," "Financing Continuing Education," and "Adult Learning: a Design for Development."

EDMONTON
A Calgary lawyer took the University of Alberta to court claiming his son was insane and in a mental institution in Ontario because of physical violence he suffered during initiation hazing in 1932, his freshman year as a law student.

Horatio Powlett filed the lawsuit on behalf of his 19-year-old son Armand Powlett. It sought $200,000 in damages from the university, its board of governors and senate committee.

The case was heard in supreme civil court (now the Court of Queen's Bench) and examined the responsibility of the university for the activities of its students in conducting initiation ceremonies. Forty witnesses testified during the two-week trial.

Powlett's father told the court that during the initiation his son was told to go to Assinaboia Hall men's residence from Athabasca Hall, his residence, wearing only a dressing gown. He was one of eight freshman stripped of their clothing before taking part in a chariot race. Losing teams were tubbed made to stand under a cold shower.

Powlett was also made to crawl on his hands and knees through an arch of students' legs and spanked.

When he shared this information with Dr. Egerton Pope, director of medical services, the elder Powlett said he was told Pope knew all about it and told him the boy had always been of unstable mind and even without the initiation he would have become insane shortly.

Later in the trial, a Montreal psychiatrist who examined Armand Powlett testified that he had recovered his mental health to where it was before he entered the U of A and could be de-institutionalized.

In his ruling of Oct. 28, Justice William Carlos Ives awarded Powlett and his son $56,860 in compensation.

I have no hesitation, whatever, in finding that the mental illness of the infant plaintiff was caused by the proceedings of initiation to which he was subjected.

With equal clarity there emerges negligence on the part of all the defendants who being aware of the institution of initiation gave it tacit approval and permitted it to be carried on without any proper supervision, the judge said.

The case led to the university abolishing freshman initiation in 1933.

More recently, a U of A fraternity, Delta Kappa Epsilon, lost its formal status as a student group for five years after an investigation into allegations of hazing in 2011. A video allegedly showed people yelling at new recruits, telling them to eat their own vomit and closing them in a plywood box during an initiation weekend. The fraternity regained full status early in the fall of 2013, after demonstrating good behaviour and community leadership.

It is with great sadness that the family wishes to announce that Gail Wendy Lafrentz, late of Estevan, SK, passed away at the Weyburn General Hospital, Weyburn, SK on Sunday, November 13, 2016 at the age of 59 years.

Gail is survived by her loving husband Allan Lafrentz and their daughters, Amber (Jon) Treloar and their children Camden and Cedar of Saskatoon, SK and Brittney (Trevor) St. John and their children Thea and Baby SJ of Regina, SK. Also left to mourn Gail?s passing is her brother Collin (Colleen) Kidd and her brothers-in-law Garry (Kathy) Lafrentz and children Karla (Derek) Forrester, Kellie (Arash) Ashou and Justin Lafrentz; Darcy (Carrie) Lisafeld and children Dessiray (Blair) and Dylan, as well as her mother-in-law Mary Lafrentz.

Gail was predeceased by her parents, Stewart and Rose Kidd, and father-in-law Elmer Lafrentz; sister-in-law Linda Morine and brother-in-law Roland Morine.

A visitation was held in the Chapel of Hall Funeral Services, Estevan, on Friday, November 18, 2016 from 7:00 ? 9:00 p.m.

The Funeral Service was held on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. in the Chapel of Hall Funeral Services, Estevan, with Doug Third officiating. Interment followed at Souris Valley Memorial Gardens, Estevan.

MARGARET ISABEL CHRISTINA KIDD passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 30, 2005 at the Charleswood Care Centre, Winnipeg. She is survived by her brother Jim (wife Gene), Winnipeg; sisters, Jean, Winnipeg, Marion, Ottawa, Edith, Matheson, ON, Lois, Newmarket, ON; brother-in-law Gary Filyk, Winnipeg; sister-in-law Peggy Kidd, Anola, MB; as well as many much-loved nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and a great-grandniece and nephew . She was predeceased by her parents, James and Margaret (Boyd) Kidd; brothers, John and Stewart; and sister Marjorie. Isabel was born in Wapella, SK. She became a teacher and received her B.A. in Lit. from UBC. She taught schools in Saskatchewan, Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta and retired to live in Winnipeg. Her family cherish beautiful memories of her joyful, thoughtful, loving, generous nature. A service will be held at Broadway Disciples United Church, 396 Broadway on Sunday, April 3 at 3:00 p.m.

MORTON, Mrs Jean Elizabeth (nee Kidd) - 1917 - 2010 - Peacefully in her sleep at Bingham Memorial Hospital on Saturday, October 30th, 2010, in her 93rd year Jean went to be with her lord. She has lived a beautiful, fulfilling life in giving of herself-talents, time and love to everyone. Her service to others began with teaching four years in rural schools in Saskatchewan. She then entered the nursing school at Calgary General Hospital. Upon graduation she nursed at the Blackfoot Native Hospital in Gleinchen, Alta and had the distinctive honour of becoming Princess Unopinoki (Laughing Eyes). Later she moved to Saskatoon and worked as nurse on the Government Air Ambulance, serving all the northern communities. She married Ian Morton and they farmed until his untimely death during heart surgery. Jean returned to the nursing profession, living in Winnipeg. For the past four years she has blessed the Bustard-Nascimento household with her positive attitude, cheerful encouragement and infectious giggle. She was always an avid Saskatchewan Roughrider fan. A precious gentle lady so loved by all who knew her! Jean is survived by her sisters Edith Bustard of Matheson and Lois Naundorf of Queensville, her brother-in-law Gary Filyk and her sisters-in-law Peggy Kidd and Gene Kidd of Winnipeg. She will be remembered with much love, A J (Aunt Jean) by her many nephews and nieces and their families. She is predeceased by her husband Ian Morton (1963) of Wapella, Sask. JAMES (JIM) ROBERT KIDD May 31, 1930 September 14, 2010 Jim passed away quietly at home after a battle with cancer at the age of 80. Jim is survived by his wife of 50 years, Gene; daughter Patti; son David; grandchildren: Kirk, Jennalee and Alyssa. Also surviving are sisters: Jean, Edith and Lois; as well as a multitude of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers John and Stuart; sisters: Marge, Isabel and most recently Marion. Jim was born in Saskatchewan, the youngest of eight remarkable close knit siblings. Trips were inevitably centered around various family weddings and get-togethers. This closeness shaped his own family. To all that knew him, he was always friendly and ready to help when needed. For his family, no sacrifice was too great. Having been raised on a farm it was inevitable that he should study agriculture at the University of Saskatchewan and then spend his career with Agriculture Canada where he was a livestock specialist, based here in Winnipeg. A longtime resident of Windsor Park, he was quite active in the church, as well as various local seniors' groups where he liked to play cribbage and bridge. In keeping with Jim's wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service celebrating his life will be held on Friday, September 24 at 2:00 p.m. in Windsor Park United Church, 1062 Autumnwood Dr. Should friends so desire, memorial donations in Jim's memory may be made to a charity of one's choice.
