Elspeth (Elizabeth) married Alexander Stewart of Balchapel on 30th April 1809 according to the Blair Atholl OPR. Alexander was the eldest son of Neil Stewart and Janet Fraser of Croftcarnach and was born at Croftcarnach on 2nd January 1782. Croftcarnach was unable to support several Stewart families and Alexander had taken up the tenancy of the next farm, Balchapel, prior to his marriage.
Alexander and Elizabeth had a family of eight children and were living at Balchapel until at least 1829. In the early 1900s, their eldest son, Neil recounted that his father had been a tenant farmer near Pitlochry, and attended the Moulin church as there was no church in Pitlochry at that time. This would suggest that the family had moved from Borenich prior to their emigration to Canada in 1835. Their last child, Christian (Christina), probably was born 20th October 1832. No record of her baptism can be found so, perhaps, they had moved to the Pitlochry area.

Neil Stewart died on 28th April 1904, and the following obituary appeared in the local paper.
" The Grim Reaper has claimed another of the old residents of Lanark county in the person of Mr Neil Stewart of Beckwith, who passed away on Thursday of last week at the age of 93 years. In December of 1902 the Gazette had the privilege of presenting to its readers an engraving of the deceased, as well as of his brother, Mr Duncan Stewart, of Ramsay, and short sketches of their lives at that time.
The deceased was born in the parish of Pitlochrie, county of Perth, Scotland, in the year 1811 and was the oldest of his father's family. He came to Canada in 1835 and worked in Bytown, then a small village, for five years. Mr Stewart married his cousin, Isabella, daughter of Mr John Stewart, of Ashton, and afterwards bought a farm on the seventh line of Beckwith. Mr Stewart had learned the trade of carpenter in Scotland and when circumstances would permit he still followed that occupation. His wife died in 1899.
Of the children, three daughters and two sons are still living. The daughters are Mrs Albert Lewis, Brockville and Misses Lizzie and Bella at home, and the sons are John B., 8th line Beckwith, with whom deceased spent his declining years, and Duncan B., of Lennox, Manitoba.
The deceased was a man of stirling character, and was honored and respected by all who knew him, and his name will long be revered as that of a sturdy champion of right and truth. He was for many years an elder in Knox Presbyterian church at Black's Corners. In politics he was a staunch Liberal. The funeral took place on Sunday morning to Dewar's cemetery and was very largely attended. Rev. Mr McFarlane conducted the service. "

The Family of Big Sandy (Alistair M?r) Stewart and Margaret Stewart of Balintochich
Neil said that the whole family emigrated in 1835 on the ship 'Canada' owned by the Allan Lines, but this was not entirely true. His brother Alexander stayed on at Balchapel and did not emigrate with them. The following year he married Margaret Stewart of Knockgarry on 4th September. Margaret was the daughter of Donald Stewart and Janet Stewart (or possibly Robertson) who were living at Balintochich in 1841.

The 1841 and 1851 census returns for Borenich show that Alexander and Margaret moved from Balchapel to nearby Balintochich, where Alexander worked as a handloom weaver. They had seven children while living at Balintochich, but none of them were baptised or recorded in the Old Parish Records. By the mid-1850s it would have been impossible to compete with the weaving looms of the big cities, and by 1853 they had emigrated to Beckwith Township to re-join the rest of the family. Margaret Stewart's brother, Alexander (born c1813), and her sister Jane (born c1815) emigrated with them. Jane died 6th January 1899.

The circumstances of the death of Big Sandy (Alistair M?r) Stewart appeared in the Perth Courier, January 18th, 1889.

" Saturday last Mr. Alexander Stewart, 4th Line Beckwith, designated as "Big Sandy", came to town to do business. In returning, as a farmer on the 9th Line reports it, he undertook to light his pipe when the young and spirited team, feeling the loosened reins, began to run away. Mr. Stewart leaned over the dashboard to pick up the reins and fell forward and down in front of the runners where he was dragged along till a boulder on the side loosened the king bolt and let away the animals.
He was found by the driver of the next vehicle to whom he said he was very much injured. He was carried into Peter McDougall's but objected to their sending for the doctor thinking he might recover. He lingered on in great pain until Sunday morning when he died just before Dr. McEwen arrived who was called out of church for the purpose of seeing him. The team ran a mile and a half where steaming and tired out they were caught by Messrs. McIlquham and Pressley who were emerging from the woods after a rabbit hunt.
Mr. Stewart was a farmer with a large business and family connections and his shocking death has sent sorrow throughout many homes both in this section and in Manitoba. "

The death of John Stewart was recorded in the Perth Courier, 7th April 1899.
" A week ago last night, John Stewart, 7th Concession Beckwith, near the lake, received a paralytic stroke from which he never really rallied and early yesterday morning - within a week - the strong man was not and his spirit departed. Mr. Stewart was born in Perthshire, Scotland and came to this country with a contingent of those sturdy Scotch settlers who came out in the early days. Deceased was a man of splendid physique and scarcely knew what illness was until the fatal shock came so quickly, ending his career.
Mr. Stewart was twice married, the first being with Elizabeth (sic) McDougall and by whom four children were born, viz., Alexander now at home; Peter of Strathclaire, Manitoba; Mrs. R. S. Allen of Cooper, Ontario; and John who, it will be remembered, was accidentally killed while falling from a bridge in British Columbia six years ago.
Mr. Stewart's second wife was Mary A. Lawford who survives him and by whom seven children were born all living: Mrs. J.D. Armstrong of Carleton Place; Mrs. John Stewart and Mrs. Ed Dewar of Crystal City, Manitoba; Mrs. Dopson of Ottawa and Thomas, Neil, Jennie and Bella at home.
Mr. Stewart lived continuously in Beckwith. In religion he was Presbyterian and a member of Knox Church, Black's Corners. In politics he was a Reformer of the old school. He served his fellows in Council for two years and was a school trustee for many years. "

ALMONTE, Aug 30 - The funeral of the late Donald Sewart took place from the family homestead, and was attended by an usually large numbered of mourners. The service was conducted by Rev W.H. McCracken, of Almonte, assisted by Rev E.E. Preston, of Vankleek Hill. The remains were inferred in the Auld Kirk cemetery. The pall bearers were: Messrs. Angus Sutherland, Robert W. Young, Peter McCallum, R.G. Kellough, Wm. Duncan and David Drummond. Mr Stewart was born on Kenmore farm, the eldest son of the late Duncan Stewart, who came here from Blair Athole, Perthshire, Scotland. He was 72 years of age. Forty years ago he was married to Miss Charlotte Watson, daughter of the late John Watson of Ramsay. The late Mr Stewart had not been in the best of health for a number of years. He was an elder of the old St. John's church, and when that congregation joined with St Andrew's he continued as an elder in the United congregation. When church union between the Presbyterian, Methodist and Congregational churches took place in 1925 he was one of those who refused to go into union. Besides his widow he leaves to mourn his loss, one son, and three daughters: Ethel, Mrs H.W. Morley, of Walville, Wash.; Margaret N., Montreal; Mable, Toronto, and Alexander on the homestead. Another daughter, Christena Mae died on Armistice Day last year. She was a Nursing Sister during the Great War. He also leaves one brother, Neil Stewart, of the Ninth Line of Ramsay. John Stewart, of Kenmore farm, who died last year, was a younger brother

War Nurse Dies After Long Fight With Ill Health
Miss Christena Stewart Was With Navel Forces In the Great War
Served in the Mediterranean, In Egypt and Other Parts of War Zone, Her Health Broke Down Under the Strenuous Duties She Underwent.

Mr Alexander Stewart was called to the Military Hospital, London, on Saturday by the very serious illness of his sister, Miss Tena Stewart, R.N., who passed away on Monday afternoon about 3 o'clock. Miss Lizzie Stewart, of Toronto, accompanied by Misses Margaret Stewart of Montreal and Miss Mabel of Toronto, accompanied the body which arrived at home on Tuesday evening. The sympathy of the whole surrounding country goes out to Mr and Mrs Donald Stewart and family in the death of their eldest daughter, Christena May.

Daughter of the Farm
Miss Stewart was born on the farm from which she was laid to rest. Although just in the prime of life, it falls to the lot of few people to see so much or so varied a life. Educated in the Public school at Appleton and at the High Schools of Almonte and Carleton Place and after teaching school for a few years she went to Winnipeg where she and her sister, Ethel, now Mrs Dr (Harvey) Wilkins Morley, trained in the Civic Hospital for the nursing profession. When the war broke, both volunteered for service and were accepted. Miss Tena was with the navel forces in the Mediterranean, in Egypt and other parts of the war zone. So strenuous did the life prove that it left her with a weakened constitution. Instead of being discharged when the war was over, she was sent to the sanatorium at Gravenhurst. From that time until her death she had been putting up a fight for life that was the wonder of all who met her. With a brave bright face and a courageous heart she faced the struggle with ill health, with never a showing of the white feather, faced it as she had faced her job in war time with a smile and a cheery word for all with whom she came in contact.

Seeking For Health
During these years Miss Stewart had taken many a long hard trip in search of health. To Arizona and to Vancouver, she went, and only this summer she made the tiresome trip from Vancouver to Almonte. In the annals of Almonte and Ramsay Miss Stewart will find a high place, She lived a beautiful life and when her country was in the throes of war, she saw her duty and she did it. She made the supreme sacrifice. The immediate relatives to mourn her passing are her father and mother, her brother Alexander on the home farm, and three sisters, Mrs Dr Wilkins Morley, of the U.S.A., Miss Margaret in Montreal and Miss Mabel in Toronto.

War Nurse Laid To Rest Veterans Bearing Remains
Large Attendance of Mourners At Funeral of Miss C.M. Stewart
Wreath From the Canadian Nursing Sister Was Afterwards Placed In the Hall of Fame at Ottawa On Armistice Day.

There was a very large attendance of mourners at the funeral of the late Miss Christena May Stewart, veteran nursing sister of the Great War, which took place on Thursday. As was stated in last week's issue of the Gazette; Miss Stewart passed away at London, Ont, on the afternoon of Thanksgiving Day after a constant struggle to regain her health since her return to Canada in April, 1919. There was a short service at the home of her parents, Mr and Mrs Donald Stewart, near Appleton, and the remains were taken to St John's Presbyterian Church, where an impressive service was conducted by Rev W.H. McCracken, minister of the church, assisted by Rev J.M. Rutherford minister of the Reformed Presbyterian Church. Interment was made in the family burying place in the Auld Kirk Cemetery. The pallbearers were six returned soldiers. Messrs W.R. Caldwell, George E. Scroggie, and J.L. Craig, of Carleton Place; Dr E.F. McGregor, Wilmer Campbell and Max Young, of Almonte. Among the many beautiful floral tributes were a blanket of flowers from the family and a wreath inscribed to her memory from the Canadian Nursing Sisters, which was placed on the Nursing Sister's Tablet in the Hall of Fame, Parliament Buildings, Ottawa, during the Armistice Day Service.

Margaret Naomi Stewart died suddenly in Carleton Place District Memorial Hospital Feb 14, 1985 following a short illness at age 89. She was born the daughter of Ramsay township residents Donald Stewart and Charlotte Watson March 15, 1985. Miss Stewart was educated at SS 11 Appleton School. She worked for the Imperial Bank of Canada, first in Montreal and later in Toronto, for over 40 years. On retirement she spent five years in England before returning to live in the Almonte and Carleton Place area in 1966. She was most recently a resident of 7 Bridge street, Carleton Place. Miss Stewart is survived by two sisters, Ethel Morley of Snohomish, Washington, and Mabel Stewart of Toronto and a niece, Anne (Mrs Arthur Fulton) of Almonte. A sister, Christina, and a brother, Alexander predeceased her. Rev Ed Smith conducted the funeral at the Gamble & Comba Funeral Home in Almonte Feb 16. Spring interment will be at the Auld Kirk Cemetery

Alex Stewart
Alex Stewart, well-known resident of Ramsay township, died on Tuesday, Dec 21, at the Almonte General Hospital following a short illness. He was 85. Born on the 12th Concession of Ramsay, April 1897, he was educated at the Appleton Public School. He had farmed on the homestead until the house was destroyed by fire in 1980. He moved to Almonte and in August 1982 entered the Almonte Nursing Home. He had been an employee of Ramsay township in his early life, and later became interested in the Ottawa Valley Hunt Club, spending many enjoyable days with activities of OVH as an honourary member. He was predeceased by his father, Donald Stewart, his mother, Charlotte Watson, his wife, Edith Bowland, his sister, Nursing Sister, C.M. Stewart CEF. Surviving are a daughter Anne and her husband Arthur Fulton three grandchildren, Douglas, Arlene and Donald, three sisters, Ethel Mrs H.W. Morlay) Snohomish, Wash, USA; Margaret, Carleton Place; Mabel, Toronto. Funeral was held at the Gamble & Comba Funeral Home, Church Street on Friday, Dec 24 at 11 am. Rev Ed Smith officiating. Spring interment, Auld Kirk Cemetery. Pallbearers were Laurence Kennedy, Edward Kennedy, Wilfred Neilson, Stuart McDougall, Alex Stewart, Clarence Lewis.

Mabel M. Stewart died Dec 7 in Toronto after a short illness. She was 94. She was born in May,1899 in Ramsay Township to the late Donald Stewart and the late Charlotte Watson. She attended Appleton Public School, Almonte High School and St Hilda's College in Toronto. After teaching in British Columbia and Kenora, Miss Stewart joined Standard Oil Company's Bitumuls branch at Leaside. She retired from there 30 years later. She belonged to the Toronto Yacht Club and enjoyed playing bridge, bowling and travelling the world. She is survived by niece Anne Fulton of Almonte, grandniece Arlene Olhman of Arnprior and grandnephews Douglas and Donald Fulton of Almonte and Don Morley Everett of Washington. She was predeceased by sisters Christine and Margaret Stewart and Ethel Morley, brother Alex and nephew Peter Morley. Rev L. Samms led the memorial service at the Gamble Funeral Home Dec 16 at 2:30 p.m. After a private cremation in Toronto, her remains will be buried in the family plot at the Auld Kirk Cemetery.

Survived by her children, Lynn and her husband Rob McLoughlin of Chatham, Bill and his wife Sandy of Guelph, Bev and her husband Ron Lee of Ailsa Craig, Bob and his wife Robin of Chatham and Lori Armstrong of Fergus.

Grandma of Jordan, Kyle, Sean, Tanya, Amanda, Brad, Ryan, Nicole, Scott, Kristy, Adam and Daniel and great grandma of Dominic, Makenna, Ryder, Alexis, and Chayce.

Sister of her twin Joan McDiarmid, Evelyn Paul, and Janet McEwen.

Also predeceased by her parents Harold and Helene McEwen, brother Donald McEwen, sister Marjorie Kingsley, and son-in-law Steve Armstrong.

Margaret was an active member of St. James ? Rosemount United Church.
She retired in 1995 from a lifelong nursing career. She trained as a nurse at Sarnia General Hospital and graduated in 1951. She worked as a supervisor in the Oncology department in Sarnia and later worked at Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital, also in Oncology, until retirement.
The family cottage at Rideau Lake was always a huge part of Jack's & Margaret's & their five children's time with all their Ottawa Valley relatives, for horseshoes, fishing, food and family fun!

Cremation. Margaret's family received relatives and friends at St. James - Rosemount United Church, 171 Sherwood Ave., Kitchener, on Monday, November 14, 2016 from 10:00 ? 10:45 am, where her memorial service was held at 11:00 am. The Reverend Chris Fickling officiated. Interment was held at a later date at Lakeview Cemetery, Sarnia.

We lost our anchor on February 27, 2018. Evelyn Paul passed away at Perth Community Care, our home away from home, surrounded by her loving family. Beloved wife of Rev. Larry Paul. Loved mother of Mary-Lynn Paul (late Frank Watson) of Perth, Margo (Curtis) Wright of Franktown and David (Kealy) of Perth. Cherished grandmother of Connor, Jenna, Rachel and Nathan Wright, Robbie Watson and Elliot and Veda Paul. Dear sister of Joan (late Jack) McDiarmid, Janet McEwan (John Lebrun), the late Marjorie (late Wilson) Kingsley, Margaret (late Jack) Hockney and the late Donald McEwen. Evelyn was a gifted teacher who shared her love of books and reading with many students over her teaching career and with her grandchildren. She was a supportive, loving and kind soul to whomever she encountered. She will be remembered for her quick wit, her sparkling blue eyes and her amazing manner of getting things done. Beloved husband and best friend of Verna (Reavie). Much loved father of Lauraine (Keith) Johnston, Bruce Campbell (predeceased in 1982), Debbie (Kenny) Bell, Glenn (Kyla) Campbell. Grandfather of Nicole (Shaun) Krosse, Andrea (Eric) Bennett, Emily (Duncan) Moffat, Jessica (Pascal) Meier, Taylor (Patricia) Bell and Brandon Bell. Gpa of Campbell Krosse, Isaac Bennett and Liam Meier. Brother of Ken (Joan), Lyle (Faye). Predeceased by his parents Wilmer and Edith (Coyles) Campbell, sister Audrey (Ralph Horner), brother Doug (survived by Marj). Arnie will be lovingly remembered by his in-laws, many nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.

Arnie was a life-long farmer and a very active member of the community. He served on many local boards including Lanark Soil and Crop, Lanark Milk Committee and was a board member of Lanark Mutual. Arnie also served as an elected member of Drummond Township from 1976-1997, he served on Lanark County Council and was Lanark County warden in 1996.

An immeasurable sadness has been left by his passing.

Friends may visit the family at the Alan R. Barker Funeral Home 19 McArthur Avenue, Carleton Place, on Wednesday July 3rd from 6-8 p.m., Thursday July 4th from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. The funeral will be held in the chapel on Friday July 5th at 1 p.m. Internment following the service at Dewars Cemetery.

Peacefully at Fairview Manor, Almonte, on Thursday, November 18th. Beloved wife of Ronald for 70 years. Dear mother of Dale (Mary), Keith and Brent (Janie). Proud Grandma of Kimberly, Jennifer, Allyson, Robbie, Matthew, Abbey and by 11 great-grandchildren. Jean was born, June 14, 1933, in Goulburn, Ontario to parents Noel and Isabel (n?e Campbell) Coyles. She is survived by her sisters, Kay Cavanagh and Anna Johnson and predeceased by sister Dorothy Lynch and brother Denzel Coyles. She will be missed by her many nieces, nephews extended family and friends.

Jean was a wonderful wife and mother. She was a talented cook and could create the most incredible apple pies ? a family favourite. When not in the kitchen baking or cleaning, she and Ron could be found spending a lot of time sitting around a card table with good friends ? something they enjoyed and Jean could sure play a good hand of Bridge.

Our family would like to thank the staff at the Fairview Manor for their kindness and compassion during Jean's stay there. It meant a lot knowing she was so well cared for.

A private family service will be held at a later date.
