The many friends had scarcely returned from following the late Mr. Snedden to the grave before they were called upon to wend their way thither again to mark their respect for the memory of Mr. A. Stevenson, J. P. who has gone over to join the 'majority'. The deceased gentleman came to Canada from Glasgow, where he was born, with other members of his mother's family, together with his stepfather, the parent of the late Mr. Galbraith of whom the deceased was a half brother , in the year 1821. The family settled in Ramsay and at that time our late townsman, was about nine years old. He resided with his family for six or seven years and then went to Montreal, where he learned the trade of a cooper, remaining there about seven years. When he removed to Carleton Place and commenced a cooperage for himself. He followed the trade for two or three years , his shop, being on the site of Savallees hotel. In 1833 he married and moved to his own farm on the second Concession of Ramsay, where he remained until 1870 when he came to Almonte and has since resided here. Mr. Stevenson was a member of the township council from 1852-1856 and was for many years a Justice of the Peace. For over thirty years he was Pork Inspector for this district. After 49 years of married life he has left a widow who feels her loss keenly and a family of 2 sons and 3 daughters. The deceased was a very quiet unobtrusive man and was consequently not as widely known as many less worthy, but in all various positions, he was called on to fill, he brought a strong conscientiousness combining with a good share of common sense to bear and thus succeeded in establishing a claim to the respect of those with whom he was brought in contact , owing to frequent attacks of asthma he was latterly confined much to the house but he was not long confined to his bed. He died on Sunday morning last, at the ripe age of 77 years and was followed to the grave on Tuesday by a very large number of people of the town and country those who knew the late Mr. Stevenson were conscious that he felt severely the death of the late Mr. Galbraith from the shock of which he never recovered.

Alexander married Margaret Jane Smith in 1833. Margaret was born in 1805 in Airdre, North Lanarkshire, Scotland; died on 14 Jan 1889 in Almonte, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried on 16 Jan 1889 in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. ?b?Death of Mr Galbraith?/b?
We are this week under the painful necessity of announcing the death of Daniel Galbraith, Esq., M.P., which took place on Wednesday morning last at five o'clock. Though not altogether unexpected ? for Mr Galbraith had been ailing for several weeks ? so soon as the first announcement of the melancholy event was made, a deep a lively sense of sorrow pervaded the whole community. In Mr Galbraith, Almonte has lost one of its most estimable and popular citizens ? North Lanark an honest, a trusted and an ever faithful representative ? the Canadian Commons an attentive and respected member. Indeed, to know Mr Galbraith was to esteem him. He was certainly one of the few of whom it may be truthfully said that the bitterness of political warfare never diminished his personal popularity. In our country, unfortunately, few men come through the turmoil of political conflicts retaining the respected alike of friend and opponent. Mr Galbraith was, however, one of those who retained the esteem of all with whom he came in contact, even in the exciting time of fierce political battles. His honesty, his candour, his fairminded appeals to the electoral body, his well-known aversion for anything like injustice and his horror of corruption in any form won for him universal esteem. His death creates a void in this community which cannot soon be filled. He shall, indeed, long be missed; but his example will be pointed to by all who respected consistency and admire honest and unobtrusive worth. The deceased gentleman was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1813, and consequently, at the time of his death, reached the ripe age of sixty-six years. He came to Canada with his parents in 1821, and settled in the township of Ramsay, Canada, and more especially the portion of it wherein the late Mr Galbraith in the earliest age of boyhood found his lot cast, was then no inviting place. From the few settlements which skirted the St Lawrence to the head waters of the Ottawa, all this section of country may be said to have been then an unbroken wilderness. But with the indomitable courage characteristic of his race, he did his share even in those early years of boyhood towards assisting to clear the forest. In the same cheerless but remunerative toil, his manhood years were also spent. He had the consolation before his death of seeing that vast wilderness which confronted him on his arrival in the country largely reduced in dimensions, and thriving settlements established throughout this section, in which civilization had not then cast its beneficent rays. The growth and advancement of the country since that time has been truly wonderful, but it is owing in a large measure to the devotedness and public spirit of the late Mr Galbraith, and such men, that such happy results have been achieved. In every movement of progress and material advancement, Mr Galbraith took an active part. From an early date he took a deep interest in railway connection with the St Lawrence. For several years he was Vice-President of the Brockville & Ottawa Valley Railway Co., and for a lengthened period held a place in the directorate of the same road. The interest of this corporation, which he rightly considered identical with the interest of this section of country, he lost no opportunity to promote. Before his death he had what must have been to him great satisfaction to know, that the road in which he took so lively an interest had advanced from a mere Provincial railway to be about to enter on the new, brighter and more extensive career of usefulness, that of a great national highway ? a connecting link in the great chain of railroads destined to connected the vast cereal bearing regions of the North West with the Atlantic sea board. Mr Galbraith's public career was one of uninterrupted success The deceased gentleman was a man of fine mental capacity, and amid all the pre-occupations of his early life found time to lay up a store of valuable information, which served him in good stead in the many public positions he was called upon during his lifetime to fill. When the first organizations of Ramsay into a municipality took place, Mr Galbraith was elected to serve as councillor. This position he held for several years, discharging its duties in such a manner as to merit promotion at the hands of his constituents. In 1856 he was chosen Deputy Reeve ? to which post he was again elected in 1857. In 1858 he was raised to the Reeveship, which he held for five years in succession, a proof of the unlimited public confidence reposed in him by those who knew him best ? his own immediate friends and neighbours. His actions in the municipal council were characterized by the same sense of duty, the same honesty of purpose, which marked his whole career, private and public. Much of the improvements operated in the township is due to his foresight and to his careful husbanding of its resources. In 1860 Mr Galbraith was chosen Warden of the united counties of Lanark and Renfrew. In the municipal council of the united counties he had already made his mark. He had won the esteem of the members of that important representative body by his moderation, good sense and sound judgement. He was re-elected Warden in 1861 and 1862 In the two years following Mr Galbraith did not hold a seat either in the township or county council. In 1865 he was re-elected Reeve of Ramsay, and on his reappearance in the county council in that year was for the fourth time raised to the dignity of Warden. In 1866 and 1867 he was re-elected to same position. Old county councillors can well remember the tact, impartiality and good judgement which were Mr Galbraith's leading characteristics in the highest municipal position in the united counties. Higher honours now awaited him. The general election of 1867 had come on. Mr Galbraith, with the great body of Upper Canadian Reformers, was a strong supporters of Confederation, and took a lively interest in its successful inception and operation. By the British North American Act, the electors of North Lanark were invested with the right of electing a member as well to the Ontario Assembly as to the House of Commons. Not a few of his friends urged on him the acceptance of candidature for the latter Chamber, for which he would probably have been without difficulty elected. But with that same feeling of moderation and fair play which he ever manifested Mr Galbraith declined to embarrass the Government by opposing one of its Ministers. He was elected by acclamation to the House of Assembly, while Hon Wm Macdougall was chosen for the House of Commons. The Government of Mr Sanfield Macdonald had just taken the seals of office in Ontario. Mr Galbraith, like a great majority of Reformers, disliked coalitions, and looked with a certain amount of suspicion on the rather sudden alliance established in 1867 between lifelong opponents such as Sir John A. Macdonald and Hon John Sandfield Macdonald. He nevertheless resolved to give, and did actually give, the Sanfield Macdonald Government every opportunity to develop its policy, and extended it a measure of support which could hardly be expected from so pronounced a Reformer. Its railway policy did not commend itself to his support, and when the general election of 1871 came around, Mr Galbraith sought and obtained the verdict of North Lanark against the Government, being returned by acclamation for the second time. When Parliament met, Mr Galbraith, with a majority of the House, supported Mr Blake's amendments to the address, and Mr Mackenzie's subsequent direct motion of want of confidence. During the session of 1871-2, he saw with evident pleasure many of the leading measures for which he had voted on opposition placed, under the able leadership of Mr Blake on the Provincial statute book. At the Dominion election of 1872 Mr Galbraith received the Reform nomination. The campaign was opened by Mr Mackenzie in an able speech at Clayton. Mr Galbraith's opponents in that election were the Hon Wm Macdougall and our townsman, Mr Bennett Rosamond. Mr Galbraith was elected by a considerable majority over both gentlemen. In the election of 1874, he was returned by acclamation; and in 1878 was one of the few Upper Canadian Reformers who succeeded in holding his seat against the powerful influences of the party advocating protection to native industries. During the last session of Parliament, he was in constant attendance on his duties. In turning over the Journals of the House, we find that he recorded his vote on the two great questions ? the dismissal of Lieut. Governor Letellier and the "National Policy," in each case against the Government. During his recent illness, he had the sympathy of all classes of our community and the deepest interest was evinced by his constituents of all shades of politics in his hoped for recovery. That recovery did not come. His spirit sought a more peaceful abode, and amid the universal sorrow of our citizens we have to-day to announce his demise. His example will live on ? an incentive to the rising generation to adhere honestly to principle, and to do that always which conscience tell them they should do. His life will thus extend its usefulness far beyond the sphere allotted to the majority of men. The deceased gentleman's family have our heartiest sympathy in their great affliction

    ?b?Very Sudden Death?/b?
At her home in Hibbard township, Perth Co., Ont, on Wednesday night of last week, Mrs Thos Muir was sitting reading her Bible by the fireside, being in excellent health, when suddenly she was heard to say there was something wrong with her, and in another instant she fell forward -- dead! It was an apoplectic fit, the third she had taken. The deceased was a sister to the late Daniel Galbraith, M.P., half-sister to the late Alexander Stevenson, of this town. She was in the 73rd year of her age. As she had expressed a wish to be buried beside her relatives here, Mr Norman Stevenson, her nephew, proceed west and brought the remains to Mrs Galbraith's residence, Ramsay, from where the funeral took place to the Eighth Line cemetery on Monday. It was largely attended. The late Mrs Muir was a woman of more than ordinary intelligence, and possessed qualities that won for her the esteem of a large circle of friends, who will regret to hear of her demise.

    ?b?Norman Stevenson?/b?
Mr Norman Stevenson has been in poor health for several months from nervous trouble, at times very seriously ill, and when the announcement of his death was made it did not come as a surprise to many, but there was sincere regret at the passing away of one who had been so long and so intimately connected with public matters in the town and county. The deceased was born in Ramsay in 1835 on the farm now occupied by Mr. I Deachman and was the eldest son of the late Alexander Stevenson. About 1873 he came to Almonte where he has since resided. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. John Rintoul of Fordyce, Huron County and Mrs. John Dunlop of Union Hall, Ramsay. Those deceased were Mrs. T. McFarlane, Carberry, Man.; And. Stevenson of Almonte, who died two years ago, and Mr Daniel Stevenson, who died at Toronto in 1869. With the passing away of his father, the late Mr. Stevenson continued to the pork-packing business which had been conducted by him, until failing health intervened. He had never married, but had lived on in the home on Queen Street, and from there the funeral took place on Tuesday, the 21st to the eighth line cemetery, where the body was placed in the vault. The pallbearers were Messers. A. M. Greig, R.A. Galbraith, John McDermott, Jas. D. Robertson, J. K. Darling, and Dr. McGregor. The services were conducted by Rev. C. H. Daly, pastor of St. John's church, of which the deceased was a member of many years standing. The late Mr. Stevenson, who was an ardent Liberal, always took an active and intelligent interest in political affairs, and was one of the most earnest workers in the interests of the party, to which he acknowledged fealty, In gatherings of workers his voice was often heard in words of wisdom and advice and his personal influence was a factor to be counted upon in accomplishing effective work during an election campaign. In municipal matters too, he was interested and for a number of years occupied a seat at the council board and assisted in the conduct of the business of the town. There are many both in the town, the township and the county, who will regret to learn of his demise.

    ?b?The late Andrew Stevenson?/b?
A year ago last fall Mr Andrew Stevenson, whose whole life had been ceaseless activity, fell on the ice and striking his side on a stone received injuries, which held him prisoner for many months and which finally developed into cancer of the liver, causing his death on Thursday last, in his 67th year. Deceased was a son of the late Alexander Stevenson, half brother of the late Daniel Galbraith and his day one of the prominent figures in Ramsay and Lanark. For twenty-five years he was a justice of the peace and many are the interesting stories of the justice and wisdom which he brought to bear on the quarrels of the pioneer days. Besides Andrew, there were two other sons - Mr Norman Stevenson, Almonte, and Daniel, who died in Toronto in 1869. Mrs Rintoul of Western Canada and Mrs John Dunlop of the 2nd line, are sisters. The late Mr Stevenson lives nearly all his life of the old homestead on the 2nd line of Ramsay, and there in 1869 he was married to Sarah Taylor, a neighbour of the same concession, who survives him. Their union was blessed with a family of nine - Mrs J Sutherland, Almonte; Mrs I. Deachman, on the homestead; Mrs C. James, Almonte; Miss Effie, teacher, Clayton; Mrs Ernest Robertson, deceased; Miss Sadie, at home; Daniel at Kingsley, Man.; Jack at Lanigan, Sask.; and Wm. at home. About eight years ago Mr Stevenson left his farm and purchasing the property on the corner of the 9th line and Almonte street from Gillies Bros., has since made his home there. On Sunday, the 25th at his lodgings on Mutual Street, Toronto, after a short illness , Daniel Stevenson, age 24, clerk in the Provincial Secretary's department, and youngest son of Alexander Stevenson, Esq. of Ramsay. It is with deep regret we chronicle the death of this talented young man, which was unexpected and sudden. He had been ailing for a few days when he was seized with erysipelas in the head, which resulted on last Sunday morning, in his premature death. He was a young man of promising ability and was highly esteemed for his suavity of manners , and unexceptional character by all acquainted with him. His bereaved father conveyed the body home for burial arriving here on Tuesday noon. The funeral took place from the depot to the burying ground on the 8th line and was largely attended considering the short notice given. The community deeply sympathized with the family in their great affliction. May he rest in Peace.

Miss Ellen Galbraith, daughter of the late Daniel Galbraith, M.P., of Almonte, died on Friday in her seventy-second year at the home of her brother-in-law, Mr Thos Houston, Carleton Place. While she had been ailing for almost a year, her death was unexpected and came as a great shock to her many friends. She was born in Ramsay and after receiving her early education there and in Almonte, she went in training for a nurse and followed her profession until about a year ago. She was very highly esteemed and her death is keenly felt by all who know her. She was a devout member of Zion church and always took an active part in all charitable work. Her father, the late Daniel Galbraith, was a member of the first Provincial Legislature in 1866 and at the time of his death in 1879 was a member of Federal House representing Lanark county. The late Miss Ellen Galbraith was the last surviving member of the family. The Galbraith home was the residence now owned by Mr George L.Comba. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon from the home of Mr Thos Houston where the Rev Edwin Smith conducted the funeral service and interment was made at the Auld Kirk cemetery.

    ?b?Robert A. Galbraith Died This Morning?/b?
Member of Prominent Ramsay Family Succumbs After Long Illness
Mr Robert Ayr Galbraith died early this morning at his home in Carleton Place. He was 62 years of age. He was a native of Ramsay, a son of the late Daniel Galbraith, at one time member of Parliament for North Lanark, and was educated in Almonte. Few men were better known. The Galbraith family has been identified with Ramsay almost since its establishment as a township. Mr Galbraith had been in failing health for some years. Last winter was spent in California in the hope of improvement, but he gained little. The death of his son, Capt Murray Galbraith, the distinguished aviator, who was killed at Camp Borden last year, was a severe blow to him. In his younger days he was a prominent athlete. His business was that of a prospector and railroad construction engineer, and he enjoyed to a marked degree the confidence of those with whom he was associated in business. He retired a number of years ago. He leaves a widow and one daughter, Isabel. Mrs Galbraith's maiden name was Elizabeth Bayne. She is a sister of Mrs John D. Taylor, of Almonte. A sister Miss Nellie Galbraith, nursed the deceased in his last illness.

    ?b?Robt A. Galbraith Passes?/b?
In the early hours of Thursday last, Dec 29th, Robert Ayr Galbraith, who had been in delicate held for a long time, passed quietly to rest at his home on High street. Born in Ramsay, son of the late Daniel Galbraith, Robert was well known throughout this entire section. As a boy he was a clever athletic and on the ball field or at cricket and later at the ice as a curler his prowess was well known. He was always a good sport and always played the game as to win the respect of his opponents as well as that of his own side. After leaving the homestead he drifted to Northern Ontario, where he became interested in railway work and prospecting and made good in the development of the new portion of the province. Some years ago he contested North Lanark for the Legislature making a very good run, but did not succeed in capturing the seat. He is survived by his wife, formerly Elizabeth Bayne, daughter of the late Alexander Bayne, and one daughter, Isabel. His only son, Captain Murray Galbraith, who distinguished himself as an aviator in the war, met a tragic death at Camp Borden last year, which was a severe blow to the father, who even then was in poor health. In religion Mr Galbraith was a Presbyterian, a member of St Andrew's congregation, and the services at the funeral on Saturday morning were conducted by Rev A.R. Gibson. Interment was made in the 8th Line Ramsay cemetery. The pallbearers were Messrs William and Robert Baird, J.D. Taylor, Robt Black, R.M. Anderson and Dr F. Fisher.

Robert married Mary Elizabeth Bayne in 1893. Mary (daughter of Alexander Bayne) was born on 16 Jun 1871 in Pakenham Township, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; died on 19 Jul 1965 in Carleton Place, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada; was buried on 22 Jul 1965 in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Ramsay, Mississippi Mills, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada. While partaking of dinner last Thursday noon, Willie, the five-year-old son of Mr and Mrs John Sutherland, of the Springfield section, swallowed a plum stone. Although the child had always experienced a difficultly in swallowing, this incident gave no cause for alarm until towards evening when the child became unable to swallow any food. Next morning his condition was unimproved and two town doctors were called in. They found it impossible to extricate the plum stone, which was firmly lodged in the gullet. Mr and Mrs Sutherland upon their advice took the child to St Luke's hospital, Ottawa, on the evening train, but he expired a few hours after entering the hospital. The remains were buried on Sunday last. Much sympathy is felt for Mr and Mrs Sutherland.
