    ?b?Obit. - Mrs. John Flynn.?/b?
On Saturday last Huntley township lost one of its landmarks by the death, after about two years' illness, of Mrs. John Flynn, aged 77 years. Deceased, whose maiden name was Elizabeth Kelly, was born in Co. Carlow, Ireland, and came to this country in 1847. Shortly afterward she married Mr. Flynn (who died some years ago) and settled on the 12th line of Huntley. There were ten of a family - five boys and five girls. The daughters are Mrs. Patrick O'Keefe, deceased; Mrs. Dennis Healy, Mrs. Matthew Healy, of Smith's Falls; Mrs. Thos. Carter, of Carleton Place; and Miss Sarah Ann, who lives at home. The sons are James, on the homestead; Dennis, an engineer with the Standard Oil Co. in New York; Michael, in Huntley; John and Thomas, in the United States. The children were given a good home training, and all have prospered and won a good name for themselves. The late Mrs. Flynn was known far and near for her geniality and hospitality, and the news of her death was received with sorrow by all who knew her. The remains were interred in St. Michael's cemetery, Huntley, on Monday at 9 a.m., the funeral mass having been celebrated in St. Michael's church by Rev. Father Corkery. The cortege was one of the largest ever seen in the township.

    Heavy Bereavement.
Mr. James Kelly, of Huntley, died on Saturday morning last, aged 70 years, from an attack of inflammation of the lungs [Pneumonia]. He was a bachelor, and had lived for some time with Mr. P. Carter. The funeral took place on Monday forenoon, to St. Michael's church and cemetery, and was largely attended. On Sunday evening, while James was lying in his coffin, his brother, Mr. Patrick Kelly, a well-known resident of Huntley, and an old settler, well esteemed by his intimate friends, died from the same trouble - inflammation of the lungs. He was 66 years of age. His funeral took place on Tuesday at 2 p.m., to St. Michael's church and cemetery, and there was a large turnout to pay the final tribute of respect. Three weeks ago or so Patrick Kelly's son, Thomas, was killed in a shanty up north, and another son, ill for some time with a lung trouble, is not expected to live for many days. These repeated trials are evoking the heartfelt sympathy of the community.

Messrs. Michael and James Flynn of Huntley went to Smith's Falls on Wednesday, called thither by the death of their sister, Mrs. D. C. Healy, who passed away on Tuesday forenoon. Up till a week before her death she had been enjoying her usual good health, but on Tuesday night of last week she was smitten with a serious paralytic stroke, and was thrown into unconsciousness from which she never recovered. Her maiden name was Bridget Anne Flynn, a daughter of the late John Flynn of Huntley, and she was 51 years of age. She was married twenty-eight years ago, to Mr. D. C. Healy, who is well known hereabout, and for the past twenty years they have lived in Smith's Falls. Of the deceased, the Smith's Falls Rideau Recorder says: She was a kindly-mannered, warm hearted woman, a true helpmeet to her husband, a firm friend and a good neighbor. Because of these she was loved and esteemed by all who knew her. She was an active and valued worker in St. Francis de Sales church and a prominent member of the Altar Society and the Society of the Sacred Heart. Peter & Martin Burns were twins.

Peter was the caretaker at the Post Office in Almonte, Ontario, and he lived in the apartment above it with his wife Sarah, and their children, Mary, Jim and Carmel. The apartment had big windows overlooking Mill St, and even in their senior years, his children remembered how they counted the 52 steps up and down the steep staircase leading to it, as well as having carved their initials into one of those window frames. Peter navigated those stairs many times a day for 19 years, despite having a wooden leg (the result of an accident, see below), until he retired in 1928 at age 67. Shortly after his death, his wife Sarah wrote in her personal journal, "April 18, 1935. Peter Burns died. He had a kind and generous heart for everybody but such love and kindness for me and our family as I did not think existed. Lord have mercy on him." [H. Presley, g-grandson]

    A Fractured Leg.
Messrs. Peter Burns, of Huntley, and Wm. Boyle, of this town, drove to Carleton Place on Sunday last, and while they were driving in the direction of the junction, a little boy named Hallinan handling the reins, the whistle of an engine caused the horse to wheel around and run away. The boy jumped out, as did Mr. Boyle, and both were not injured; but Mr. Burns remained in the rig for a time, trying to get hold of the lines, and when he did jump he fell on a knoll, breaking some of the bones above the ankle joint. The fracture was a bad one, one of the bones protruding through the skin. It will keep Mr. Burns a prisoner for some time, and he may have a stiff leg as a reminder of the accident. Mr. W. Warren, of this town, chased the runaway horse on his bicycle, and caught it at the Appleton turn. Neither horse nor rig was injured.

    Friday, May 4, 1894, p. 1
Mr. Peter Burns, whose leg was broken at Carleton Place last week, is now in an Ottawa hospital, where he is progressing favorably. It was feared that amputation would have to be performed, but we are glad to learn that that is now unnecessary.

    Friday, July 27, 1894, p. 1
We regret to learn that Mr. Peter Burns, of Huntley, who had his leg broken a month or two ago, has not been making as much progress as was expected towards recovery. Since the accident he has been in the Ottawa hospital, and it has been decided to amputate the broken limb today.

NOTE: Peter's leg was amputated below the knee. He had a wooden leg for the remainder of his life, with the foot portion carved into the shape of a shoe.

    The Late Mrs. S. Drummond.

We regret to record the death of Mary Burns, wife of Mr. Samuel Drummond, of Ramsay, which took place on Monday last, two weeks after the birth of her daughter. She was 36 years of age. Deceased had been making good progress for some time after her confinement, but complications arose, with a fatal result. Mrs. Drummond was well and favourably known, and was highly esteemed for her excellence of head and heart. With an unusual bright and cheerful disposition, a kind nature, and the spirit of generosity well developed, she won for herself a large circle of warm friends, who now mourn her untimely demise, while the sympathy of the whole community is with Mr. Drummond and his four little children in their irreparable loss. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon, to the eighth line cemetery, and the cortege was a mile in length as it left the house, a tangible evidence of the respect and sympathy of the countryside. The Oddfellows of this town attended in a body to mark their condolence with their bereft brother. Rev. R. J. Hutcheon, M.A. officiated at the funeral, deceased having been a member of St. Andrews congregation.
