Mrs A. Cochran Of Ramsay Passes, At Age of 79 Years
Deceased Took Active Part, In Social and Religious Work
Attended by a host of friends and relatives from this district and more distant points, the funeral of the late Mrs Andrew Cochran was held on Sunday afternoon from the family residence, Seventh concession of Ramsay, to the Auld Kirk Cemetery. Mrs Cochran was one of the best known and most highly respected citizens of the North Lanark section. Her maiden name was Catherine Wilson and she was born in Lanark Township in 1856, a daughter of the late Catherine and Daniel Wilson. In 1883 she married Andrew Cochran, prominent Ramsay farmer, who survives her. At the time of her death early Saturday morning, Mrs Cochran had reached the advanced age of 79 years. Left to mourn Mrs Cochran, in addition to the husband, are four sons and one daughter, namely, Alex of Ramsay, Wilson of Sudbury, Milton of the homestead, Kenneth of Portland, Oregon, and Isobel, Mrs W.A. Jamieson of Almonte. Another son, Lieut Robert H. Cochran fell in the World War. Three sisters and four brothers also survive. They are Mrs Angus Sutherland and Miss Hattie of Almonte; Mrs Harold Philips of Regina; R.C. Wilson of Toronto; J.W.S. Wilson of Arnprior; Howard Wilson of Lloydminster, Sask., and William Wilson of Clayton. Some idea of the active interest taken by the late Mrs Cochran in the social and religious activities of the district may be gained from the following facts in connection with her long life. A member of the Presbyterian church and a life member of the Women's Missionary Society since 1912, she always took an active part in every organization of the church. She was the first president of the Almonte Branch of the Women's Institute and also organized the branches at Clayton and Antrim. She was a member of the Alexandra Club and an honourary director of the N.L.A.S. for many years. Funeral services were conducted at the home and grave on Sunday afternoon by Rev A.J. Fowlie, pastor of Almonte Presbyterian Church, assisted by Rev J.M. Rutherford of the Reformed Presbyterian Church; Rev Wm Aird of the Baptist Church and Rev Andrew McLauchlin of Trinity United Church. The pallbearers were: Wilbert Cochran, Wm Jamieson, Sylvester Moir, Andrew Stewart, James Steele, and Wm Philip. Among the many floral tributes were those from the Presbyterian Church; Women's Institute; Canadian Legion; Granite Chapter of Royal Arch Mason and Mississippi Lodge A.F. & A.M. The death of Mrs Cochran is widely regretted breaking as it does another link with the historic past. The sympathy of a large circle of friends is extended to surviving members of the family.

Obituary Mrs Angus Sutherland
Following a lengthy illness, Margaret Anne Wilson, widow of the late Angus Sutherland, passed away at the Perley Home, Ottawa, on Monday morning, Oct 15th. The deceased was born in Lanark Township, April 10th, 1860. She was a daughter of the late Daniel Wilson and his wife, Catherine Halpenny. Some 60 years ago she married Angus Sutherland of Ramsay Township and they lived on the 6th line all their married life. Mr Sutherland passed away in 1932 and after that time deceased made her home in Almonte and Ottawa. She is survived by one sister, Mamie, Mrs W.H. Phillips of Regina, Sask. The funeral was held on Thursday afternoon from the Comba Funeral Home where servce was conducted by Rev DeCourcy Rayner, and interment was in the Auld Kirk Cemetery. The pallbearers were Dr. A.G. Young, Alex Symington, Daniel Wilson, Harold Phillips, Gordon Donaldson and Malcolm Stewart. Among those from a distance who attended the funeral was her brother-in-law, Mr Harold Phillips, of Regina.

Milton B. Cochran Was Prominent In Many Circles
Ramsay township lost one of its best known residents on Monday evening, July 3, when Milton Burns Cochran, son of the late Andrew Cochran and Catherine Wilson, died suddenly at the place of his birth at the age of seventy-five.The Rev. John MacPhail conducted the funeral service in Almonte Presbyterian Church, where a large attendance of friends and neighbours bore testimony to the high esteem in which Milton Cochran was held in his community. The honorary pallbearers were James Steele, William Poole, R. A. Stewart, James M. Brown, Floyd Lashley and Robt. Cochran, while Robert Barker, Donald Cochran, Carman Munro, Graham Hudson, William Jamieson Jr. and Russell Cochran were acting pallbearers. Left to mourn his loss is his wife, the former Mertie Hudson, three sons, John of Almonte, James of Guelph, Claude at home, also two grandchildren. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. W. A. Jamieson (Isobel) and one brother, Kenneth, now in Mexico. He was predeceased by three brothers, Alec, Wilson and Robert. At the time of his death he was treasurer of the Ontario Association of Agricultural Societies, a position he held for twenty-seven years. He was also serving his second term as chairman of the Board of Almonte General Hospital. He was a past president of the North Lanark Agricultural Society; served on Ramsay Township Council and on Ramsay School Board. He was a lifelong member of Almonte Presbyterian Church, where he was a member of the Board of Managers. He was a veteran of the First World War, and in later years did extensive work with veterans in Eastern Ontario. He was a charter member of the Almonte Branch of Canadian Legion No. 240, also Past Master of Mississippi Lodge A.F. & A.M., a member of Granite Chapter 61, Ottawa Preceptory, and Rameses Temple, Toronto. Interment was in Auld Kirk Cemetery. A well-attended Masonic service was held on the evening of July 4th. Many beautiful floral tributes were received, while a number preferred to send donations to Almonte General Hospital in his memory.

Jean McLaren Stewart
Former Almonte area resident Jean McLaren Stewart (nee Cochran) died peacefully at Lanark Lodge, Perth, Ont., on Saturday, Jan. 11. She was 85. The daughter of the late Alexander Cochran and Catherine Forsythe of Ramsay, Jean was raised in the township on the family farm. She completed her teacher training at the former Ottawa Teacher's College. Jean taught in many of the area schools. She instilled a love for reading in everyone she met. She worked at Almonte Public Library for many years after she retired from teaching. In June of 1939 she married Malcolm Stewart. After initially living in Clayton they moved to Almonte where they raised two children. Jean was an active member of the Almonte United Church. She served as secretary of the Women's Association and was one of the first women elders. Beloved wife of Malcolm (Mac) Stewart. Dear mother of Sandy (Helen) of Etobicoke and Amy (Mrs. Bill Shail) of Kingsville, Onto Loving grandmother of Maxine (Mrs. Steven Robertson) of Newmarket, Graham (Kim) of Bradford, Alana (Mrs. Pat Carrey) of Arnprior and Christopher Shail of Kingsville. Great grandmother of Jordan and Lauren Stewart. She is also survived by four sisters, Mrs. Mary MacKenzie of Elliott Lake, Amy (Mrs. Ralph Milne) of Oakville, Margaret (Mrs. Gordon Donaldson) and Helen (Mrs. Ken Duncan) both of Almonte, and a sister-in- law Margaret Cochran. Predeceased by her only brother Russell. Jean will also be missed by her cousin Andrew Cochran of Sutton. The funeral service was held Monday, Jan. 13, at 3 p.m. at the C.R. Gamble Funeral Home with The Rev. Dr. Leo Hughes of Arnprior officiating and David Donaldson giving the eulogy. Interment in the Auld Kirk Cemetery in the spring.

Dear son of the late Alexander Cochran and the late Catherine Forsythe. Dear brother of Jean (Mrs. Malcolm Stewart), Almonte; Mary (Mrs. Alex McKenzie), Toronto; Margaret (Mrs. Gordon Donaldson), RR 1, Pakenham; Amy (Mrs. Ralph Milne), Oakville and Helen (Mrs. Ken Duncan), RR 1, Almonte. In his 70th year. Friends called at the Kerry Funeral Home, 154 Elgin Street, Almonte, for visiting on Saturday evening from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thence to the Almonte Presbyterian Church on Monday at 12 noon for service at 2 p.m. Rev. Ed Smith officiating. Interment Auld Kirk Cemetery in the spring. Royal Canadian Legion Branch No 240, Almonte, Service on Saturday evening at 8 p.m., in the Funeral Home.

Peacefully at Almonte Country Haven on Saturday, March 26, 2011.
Helen Cochran
of Almonte, age 89 years.
Beloved wife of the late Ken Duncan and dearly loved mother of Anne Stevens (Selwyn) of New Zealand, Robert (Cheryl) of Richmond, Jim (Judy) of Almonte and Susan Gagnon (Charles) of Arnprior. Predeceased by 4 sisters; Jean Stewart, Amy Milne, Mary MacKenzie & Margaret Donaldson and by 1 brother; Russell Cochran. Also survived by 5 grandchildren; Jesse, Evanglynne, Chance, Jennifer & Micheal.
Relatives & friends are invited to join the family for A Celebration of Helen's Life in the Almonte Presbyterian Church on Thursday, March 31 at 11 am.

He was operating a tractor alone on his farm on Lot 21, Conc 6 in Ramsay township. Perth OPP who were called to the scene about 4 pm, report that Mr Cochran was trapped under a large piece of frozen silage. The silage appeared to have fallen off the front end loader on the tractor. The tractor was in reverse and continued to back up until it hit a tree. The silage pinned Mr Cochran underneath it, pressing his chest and abdomen. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Coroner Dr Ralph Bach.

Former Reeve John Cochran Died In TragicAccident On Farm
A farming accident had claimed the life of former Almonte reeve and prominent citizen John Cochran, at his RR 4 Almonte farm. He was 49. The accident resulting in Mr Cochran's death by asphyxiation happened some time between noon and 3:30 pm last Tuesday. He was operating a tractor alone on his farm on Lot 21, Conc 6 in Ramsay township. Perth OPP who were called to the scene about 4 pm, report that Mr Cochran was trapped under a large piece of frozen silage. The silage appeared to have fallen off the front end loader on the tractor. Mr Cochran's long list of community involvement included being past chairman of the Algonquin College Board of Governors and past president of the Ontario Association of Rural Municipalities. In addition to being former Almonte reeve, he had been chairman of the Almonte General Hospital board and Almonte Lions Club president in previous years. Mr Cochran owned Mississippi Travel in Carleton Place. "He was one of my very close friends. He will be sadly missed by ourselves and our community," said Dr Frank Murphy of Almonte, a close friend.

Suddenly at his residence on Tuesday, January 22nd, 1985. John A. Cochran (Of Almonte ? age 49 years). Eldest son of Mrs Jim McDonald (nee Mertie Hudson) and the late Milton Cochran. Beloved husband Margaret More and cherished dad of Allison and Lesley of Almonte. Dear brother of Jim and Claude of Almonte. Friends called at the Gamble & Comba Funeral Home, 127 Church Street, Almonte from 8 to 9:30 pm Wednesday and from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9:30 pm Thursday. Thence to rest in the Almonte Presbyterian Church from 12 noon Friday until service at 2 pm, Rev Ed Smith officiating. Cremation Pinecrest Crematorium.
