Huntley is an historic township originally part of Carleton County in eastern Ontario, Canada. The township was established in 1841. The first settlers in the area were immigrants from Ireland in the early 19th century. Huntley took its name from Huntly Castle, associated with Charlotte Lennox, Duchess of Richmond, whose husband Charles served as Governor General of British North America from 1818 to 1819.
By 1866, there was a Post Office in the township of Huntley and John Graham served as postmaster.

In 1974, it was amalgamated with Torbolton and Fitzroy to form West Carleton. In 2001, West Carleton became part of the new city of Ottawa.

On Sunday last after five or six months' illness from lung trouble, Mrs David Fumerton succumbed, at the untimely age of 47 years, leaving the husband and six children in deep sorrow. Deceased, whose maiden name was Christina Aitken, was a woman much esteemed by those she knew her. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon from the family residence on the Island, to the eighth line cemetery. A large number of sympathizing friends attended.

The death occurred in Almonte on Friday, Feb 15th, of Mr Duncan Aitken following a short illness of pneumonia. Deceased was born in Huntley Township of 71 years ago and farmed in Ramsay until his removal to Almonte 15 years ago where he lived retired until the time of his death. Mr Aitken is survived by his widow who was Minnie Leishman before her marriage. Five brothers and five sisters predeceased him. The funeral was held Monday afternoon from the late home of deceased on Wesley street to the Auld Kirk Cemetery where interment was made. Services were conducted by Rev A. J. Fowlie of the Almonte Presbyterian Church. The pallbearers were Thomas, Ernest, Allan and Clyde Leishman, Lorne Moreau and Alfred Barrowclough. The late Mr Aitken was a quiet retiring man who went his way through life making many friends and no enemies. He will be missed by those who knew him intimately during the long period of his residence in town.

Mrs J. Hamilton Died on Monday
The death of Mrs John Hamilton occurred at her home
on Sussex street on Monday afternoon. She was in her
92nd year and had been seriously ill for the past five years.
The former Ellen Aitkens, she was born in Huntley
Township and resided there until her marriage. Her
husband died about six years ago. She was a member of
the United Church.
Survivors include two nephews, Norman Patton of
Cornwall and Melvin Patton of town and a niece, Mrs Ray
Livingston of Windsor.
The funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon from the
residence of her nephew, Melvin Patton and the service
was conducted by Rev Summers. Interment was made in
Auld Kirk Cemetery.

The death occurred on Saturday, May 3rd, at the
Carleton Place and District Memorial Hospital of Hugh
Hamilton after an illness of two months.
A son of the late Thomas Hamilton and his wife Janet
Aitken, he was born in Huntley township 82 years ago.
During his younger years he farmed on the family
homestead and later worked on farms in the Appleton and
Blakeney districts. About ten years ago he came to reside in
Carleton Place where he made many friends.
Mr Hamilton was never married and is survived by two
sisters, (Marion), Mrs George Shail of Beckwith, (Mary), Mrs
Percy Parker of Carleton Place, and two brothers, Alex of
Smiths Falls, and Harry of Appleton. Five brothers and two
sisters are predecease

Mrs William Toop
There passed away at her home her Monday morning, a well known citizen in the person of Mrs William Toop, in her 65th year. Daughter of the late Mr and Mrs David Fumerton of Appleton, Ont., Christena Fumerton was married to the late Mr Wm Toop of Almonte who died four years ago. Mr and Mrs Toop had resided in Almonte since their marriage and were members of the Baptist church. There remain to mourn her loss, one son, Corp Arthur Toop, R.C.O.C. stationed at Barriefield Camp; three sisters, Mrs J.R. Tuggey, of Ottawa, Mrs W. Ashman of Pakenham and Mrs E. Coxford of Rochester, N.Y.; one brother, Frederick Fumerton of Carleton Place; four step daughters, Mrs Ernest Little, Mrs James Guthrie, Mrs Lester Ford of Almonte and Mrs A. McLeod of Moose Jaw, Sask.; Three stepsons, Mr Sidney and Henry Toop of Brockville and Mr Fred Toop of Regina, Sask. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon from the funeral parlours of G.L. Comba, Church Street, to the Auld Kirk Cemetery. The pallbearers were Messrs James Guthrie, Edwin More, Lester Ford, Hubert Syme, Gordon Toop and Frank Honeyborne.

Mr. James Fumerton
Mr. James Fumerton died in the R. M. Hospital on Friday night. He was the eldest son of the late David Fumerton and his wife Christina aitken. Deceased was educated in Appleton and engaged in mill work throughout the country. He was in his 53rd. year and had been in poor health for some time.
Surviving are one brother Fred in Carleton Place; and three sisters, Tillie, Mrs. Wm. Ashman, White Lake; Minnie, Mrs. Tuggy, Ottawa; Christine, Mrs. Toop of Almonte.
The funeral was held from the home of Mr. George Comba, Almonte with interment being made in the Auld Kirk Cemetery. Rev. A McLauchlin conducted the burial service. The pallbearers were Messrs. Leonard Dowdall, Elmer Aitken, Joseph O'Brien, Cecil Turner, Sinclair Turner and Edward Lowe.

The funeral of Frederick Fumerton was held Tuesday afternoon from the Alan R Barker Funeral Home, McArthur avenue, where Rev Dr Louis Shein conducted the service. Interment was made in Auld Kirk cemetery. Mr Fumerton died in Almonte hospital last Saturday. He was in his 64th year and had been ill since December. He boarded for the last seven years with Miss Ethel Samole on Princess street. Born at Appleton he was the son of the late David Fumerton and his wife, Christena Aitken. He was employed years ago with James Edwards in the grocery store and later at woollen mills here. Survivors include two sisters, one at White Lake and one in United States.

Fredrick married Annie Leila Fumerton in 1909. The remains of the late Mr Lorne Fumerton were brought here last Saturday night for interment in the eighth line cemetery. The deceased had been living in Hull and death was caused by pneumonia following influenza and took place Saturday morning. The late Mr Fumerton was a son of Mr David Fumerton of Appleton and lived his whole life there until a couple of years ago. when he moved to Hull. He is survived by his wife, who was Miss Emma McFadden of Ashton, and two little sons; his parents and several sisters and brothers.

-- We regret to learn of the death of Mr Lorne Fumerton which took place on Saturday morning at Hull, after a short illness of pneumonia. The body was taken to Almonte on Saturday evening and the funeral took place to the 8th line cemetery. He is survived by his wife, who was Emma McFadden, of Ashton, and two little sons, also his father and mother, four sisters and three brothers. One of those is Mr Fred Fumerton, of Carleton Place. Lorne was brought up in Appleton, being a son of Mr David Fumerton, and lived here continually until about two years ago, when he moved to Hull. The family have the deepest sympathy in their sad bereavement.

Harry Francis (Frank) Hamilton
Harry Francis (Frank) Hamilton, a life-time resident of Huntley Township, died Nov 12 at the Almonte General Hospital. He was 75 years old. He was born Jan 6, 1919, son of the late Harry Hamilton and his wife, the late Marion Aitken. He always resided on the Hamilton homestead where he was an active farmer, livestock and machinery dealer. On Sept 24, 1949, he married Edith Virgin of Clayton. Mr Hamilton is survived by his children Allan (Barbara), Heather (Mrs Robert Clement), Sandy (Patricia) and Gwen (Mrs Kevin O'Connell), all of Almonte. He was predeceased by two children, Ivan and Pamela. He is also survived by his brothers, Ivan of Carleton Place, and Albert of Hamilton, his sisters Hazel (Mrs Hedley Stewart) Almonte, Janetta (Mrs Robert McKenzie) of Stittsville and Beatrice (Mrs Len Kilsby) of Quesnel, B.C. He was predeceased by one brother, Alex. Mr Hamilton is also survived by 12 grandchildren. Rev Ted Colwell conducted the funeral on Tuesday, Nov 14 at 2 p.m. at the Almonte United Church. Interment will be at Auld Kirk Cemetery. As part of the service, Heather Clement shared some thoughts about her father's legacy. One of Mr Hamilton's most requested violin tunes, Amazing Grace, was played by grandson Tim O'Connell and Gwen's nephew, Danny O'Connell to conclude the service. Honourary pallbearers were Eddie Kennedy, Jim Galvin, Joe Madden, Roy Lowe, Glen Rivington and Jack Virgin. Pallbearers were grandsons Clayton and Neil Hamilton and Jamie Clement, nephews Ronnie McKenzie and Donald Stewart and friend Kevin Simpson.

Mr Earl Fumerton of Carleton Place is in the R.M. Hospital suffering from severe burns. His car took fire in the Hotel Almonte yard at two o'clock Monday morning. Mr Peter Ferguson also of Carleton Place, who was with him was in the act of pouring water into the dry carburetor when it burst into flames. As the car was a closed sedan it was with great difficulty that he got Mr Fummerton out of the car, who was most severely burned. He was rushed to the R.M. Hospital where everything was done to relieve him. The car was a complete wreck.

Of the sad death of Earle Fumerton, the Carleton Place boy who succumbed to burns sustained in a motor accident at Almonte, the Carleton Place Canadian says: "The young man was born in Appleton, but when a very small boy came to reside in town with his parents where he has spent practically all his life. Besides his father and mother, two sisters Muriel and Lenna, with one brother Ross survive. The remains were brought home on Thursday morning and the funeral which was largely attended, took place from his father's home to the Auld Kirk cemetery. The service was conducted by the Rev A. Rayburn Gibson who took as his text John 14th chapter and 2nd Cor., 17th and 18th verses. The pallbearers were all companions, namely John Ball, Lloyd Edwards, Charlie Hale, Howard Little, Bryan Drader and Theodore Nesbitt. Helen Margaret Thompson of Chesley passed away at Brucelea Haven, Walkerton on Wednesday, January 9, 2019, in her 92nd year.
Helen was raised on the family farm in Appleton, Ontario and in 1947 she married Malcolm Thompson. They farmed and raised their two sons in the Almonte area until 1964, when they sold the farm and moved to Southwestern Ontario. During this time she was active in the Ontario Farmer's Union and was quite proud to have assembled and published a cookbook for this organization. In later years she enjoyed going to threshing festivals and jamborees with her partner Ron Bowerbank. Her heart and soul, however, remained in "The Valley" as she returned there regularly throughout the years to visit friends and relatives.

Loving mother of Raymond (Cindy) and Reginald. Helen will be fondly remembered by her four grandchildren and brother Mel (Shirley) Fee. She was predeceased by her husband Malcolm "Mac" Thompson (1974), partner Ron Bowerbank (2016), sister Muriel Kernaghan, brothers James, Arthur and her parents Hubert and Jeanette (Aitkin) Fee.

As per Helen's wishes, cremation has taken place with private family services to follow.

The family cottage at Rideau Lake was always a huge part of Jack's & Margaret's & their five children's time with all their Ottawa Valley relatives, for horseshoes, fishing, food and family fun!

Cremation. Margaret's family received relatives and friends at St. James - Rosemount United Church, 171 Sherwood Ave., Kitchener, on Monday, November 14, 2016 from 10:00 ? 10:45 am, where her memorial service was held at 11:00 am. The Reverend Chris Fickling officiated. Interment was held at a later date at Lakeview Cemetery, Sarnia.

Arnie was a life-long farmer and a very active member of the community. He served on many local boards including Lanark Soil and Crop, Lanark Milk Committee and was a board member of Lanark Mutual. Arnie also served as an elected member of Drummond Township from 1976-1997, he served on Lanark County Council and was Lanark County warden in 1996.

An immeasurable sadness has been left by his passing.

Friends may visit the family at the Alan R. Barker Funeral Home 19 McArthur Avenue, Carleton Place, on Wednesday July 3rd from 6-8 p.m., Thursday July 4th from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. The funeral will be held in the chapel on Friday July 5th at 1 p.m. Internment following the service at Dewars Cemetery.

Predeceased in March 2008 by her loving husband of 62 years, William Colonel Lynch. Dorothy was the devoted mother of Bill (Geri) of Collingwood, Barry of White Lake, Brian of Carleton Place and was predeceased by her only daughter Carole Ann O'Keefe in March 2006. Adoring Granny of Susan Young, Sean Lynch, Barbara Lynch, Steven O'Keefe, Emily Vennor, Jeffrey O'Keefe and Kristen McArthur. Proud great-grandmother of 12 precious great-grandchildren. Peacefully at Fairview Manor, Almonte, on Thursday, November 18th. Beloved wife of Ronald for 70 years. Dear mother of Dale (Mary), Keith and Brent (Janie). Proud Grandma of Kimberly, Jennifer, Allyson, Robbie, Matthew, Abbey and by 11 great-grandchildren. Jean was born, June 14, 1933, in Goulburn, Ontario to parents Noel and Isabel (n?e Campbell) Coyles. She is survived by her sisters, Kay Cavanagh and Anna Johnson and predeceased by sister Dorothy Lynch and brother Denzel Coyles. She will be missed by her many nieces, nephews extended family and friends.

Jean was a wonderful wife and mother. She was a talented cook and could create the most incredible apple pies ? a family favourite. When not in the kitchen baking or cleaning, she and Ron could be found spending a lot of time sitting around a card table with good friends ? something they enjoyed and Jean could sure play a good hand of Bridge.

Our family would like to thank the staff at the Fairview Manor for their kindness and compassion during Jean's stay there. It meant a lot knowing she was so well cared for.

A private family service will be held at a later date.

The little boy who was in his third year was standing at a gate which his father had opened but on the opposite side of the road and as is the way of small children, darted into the path of the truck so quickly that no one saw him until it was too late. The truck was driven by Keith Drynan, an employee of Mr. Hamilton. The child was rushed to the Almonte General Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival by Dr. R. K. Bach. Dr. J. A. McEwen of Carleton Place, County Coroner was called and said there would be no inquest.

IVAN CHARLES HAMILTON
The community was deeply shocked on Tuesday morning, November 13th to hear of the accidental death of Ivan Charles Hamilton, youngest son of Frank Hamilton and his wife Edith Virgin. He was born on the 25th day of April, 1960. Besides his sorrowing parents he is survived by two brothers, and two sisters, Allan, Heather, Sandy and Gwen, also his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Alex Virgin of Clayton and Mr. Harry Hamilton of Appleton. The funeral which was very largely attended was held on Thursday afternoon from the Kerry Funeral Home, Almonte and conducted by Rev. Francis Gerard with interment at the Auld Kirk Cemetery. The pallbearers were three cousins, Bobbie Stewart, Arnold and Stuart Virgin and a close friend, Brian Drynan. Many beautiful floral tributes and expressions of sympathy were received by the grief stricken family.

PAMELA HAMILTON
Great shock and sorrow was experienced on Monday, November 19, 1973 when news was received of the sudden death of Pamela May Hamilton at Almonte General Hospital youngest daughter of Frank Hamilton and his wife Edith Virgin of Huntley Township. Pamela, who was born February 28, 1963 is survived by her parents and Allan, R.R. 4, Almonte, Heather (Mrs. Robert Clement), Almonte and Sandy and Gwen at home. She was predeceased by a brother Ivan and was granddaughter of Mr. Harry Hamilton, Carleton Place and Mr. and Mrs. Alex Virgin, Clayton. Pam was a popular pupil at Huntley Centennial School and was in attendance in grade six until the beginning of her short illness. The body rested at the Kerry Funeral Home Almonte where service was held on Wednesday, November 21 at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. Robert McCrea of the United Church, where Pam had been a faithful Sunday School member. The pallbearers were six uncles, Bill Stewart, Ivan Hamilton, Alex Hamilton, Albert Hamilton, Robert McKenzie and Nathan Virgin. Flower bearers were Arnold Virgin, Alfred Hamilton, Robbie McKenzie, Bruce Stewart, Donald Stewart and Kevin O'Connell. Pam's funeral was attended by a great number of friends. Burial was in the family plot at the Auld Kirk Cemetery.
