The family later moved to Winnipeg, Manintoba before relocating to Grand Forks, North Dakota. For many years James plied his trade in the sash and door business in Grand Forks, eventually owning a business outright with his sons. James was a North Dakota state senator from 1906-1910.

SENATOR TURNER
Fifty-nine years ago, on September 9, 1847, a son was born to a young Scotch couple who were on their way from Scotland to seek their fortunes in the strange land of America. That son was James Turner, now senator from the sixth district of North Dakota. The boy inherited much of the old Scotch honesty and integrity and a steadfastness of purpose that has helped him over many a rough place in life.
The young couple located on a farm in Lanark county, Ontario, and there the boy lived until he was fourteen years of age. His father died when he was but seven years old and he was early thrown on his own resources. He acquired a common school education in the schools of Ontario and learned the carpenter's trade. He worked at his trade in Ontario until 1881 when he moved to Winnipeg. After a year and a half in that city he moved to Grand Forks, Dakota territory, where he has made his home ever since.
On coming to Grand Forks he engaged in contracting and building. In 1885 he began the manufacture of sash and doors at Grand Forks, with a Mr. Chisholm, under the firm name of Chisholm & Turner. This partnership was dissolved in 1891 and from then until 1895 he was engaged as superintendent of construction on numerous buildings. In 1895 he again went into the manufacture of sash and doors under the firm name of Turner & Callender. This business has grown to large proportions, and in 1906 he bought out Mr. Callender and took into partnership his two sons, J. D. and J. E. Turner. The firm is now named James Turner & Sons, but the business will be incorporated this month.
Mr. Turner was married July 5, 1872, to Miss Jenet Barber, Almonte, Ontario, and the two sons who are now in partnership with him are his only children. In politics Mr. Turner is a democrat, and like the good old Scotchman he has stood by his party in spite of its many adversities. He never held any political office until he was elected senator from the sixth district in the fall of 1906, defeating Hugh Ryan, a former member of the lower house in a district that has usually given the republican candidates large majorities.

John D. Turner, Sr., 92, retired Grand Forks, ND water superintendent, died early Sunday morning in a Billings nursing home of a stroke.

He was born Jan. 2, 1874 in Canada, son of Mr. and Mrs. James E. Turner, and came to Grand Forks with his parents at the age of 12.

He married Georgianna Fadden at Grand Forks in October 1895. He operated a sash and door factory and later served as water superintendent, retiring in 1948.

He served as a Grand Forks alderman eight years. He was a Mason, a Shriner, and member of Elks Lodge at Grand Forks.

In 1948 he moved to Spokane where he lived until coming to Billings in 1962. Mrs. Turner died here in August 1963. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Billings.

Surviving are three sons, J. Harry Turner of 222 Fairpark Drive, John D. Turner, Jr., of 1512 St. John's Ave., and Lyle P. Turner of 1824 Wyoming Ave.; a daughter, Mrs. J.P. Finlay of Spokane; brother, James E. Turner of Grand Forks, 19 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 3:30 pm Tuesday in Dahl-Brown Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Blakeney News
Death sad as it is at all times is rendered doubly sad when it cut down a loved one in the prime of life as in the case of Mrs R. Giles, jr., who passed away peacefully to her eternal reward last Sunday morning. She had been ailing but a short time and though seriously ill was thought to be on the way to recovery when suddenly the vital spark fled. Deceased, who was in her 38th years, was the eldest daughter of Mr Stephen McArthur of Ramsay. About six years ago she was married to Mr Giles and has since resided in Blakeney, where by her quiet, unassuming and very kindly ways she won her way to the hearts of all who knew her. Mr Giles has the heartfelt sympathy of the community in his deepest of all sorrow. The funeral, which was largely attended, took place on Tuesday at 2.30 to the 8th line cemetery, Rev D.M. MacLoed of Blakeney conducting the services

Mrs James S. Paterson
A life-long resident of Ramsay Township in the person of Mrs Jas S. Paterson, passed peacefully away at her home on the 6th line, on Dec 16th. Deceased's maiden name was Jessie McArthur, daughter of the late Stephen McArthur and his wife, Mary Turner. She was born Aug 6th, 1873, and was married to Jas S. Paterson in 1898, who predeceased her in 1937. Mrs Paterson was a devoted member of Guthrie United Church, Clayton, and worked faithfully for years for the Bible Society. She is survived by two sons, namely, Stewart and Wilbert. One son, Harvey, predeceased her in 1945. Two sisters, Mrs Reuben Giles and Miss Ethel McArthur, and one brother Stephen McArthur, survive. Also to mourn her loss are five grandchildren. The funeral, held from the Comba Funeral Home, on Dec 19th, to the 8th line cemetery, was largely attended. Service was conducted by Rev Mr Hawley and assisted by Rev Mr Reid of Carleton Place. The flower bearers were Gordon Paterson and David Majaury. Pallbearers were Grant Gunn, John James, George Stewart, Ernest Giles, Alex McArthur and Delmer Paterson.

Mrs Reuben Giles
ALMONTE, Dec 28 - (Special)- Mrs Reuben Giles, longtime resident of Blakeney Village, some three miles north of Almonte, died at her home in the village on December 25 following a short illness. She was 77. Born Bertha McArthur in Ramsay township February 29, 1880, she was a daughter of the late Stephen McArthur and his wife, the former Mary Turner. She received her education in the rural schools. Following her marriage some 45 years ago she and her husband moved to Blakeney Village, where they have resided until the time of her death. She was a member of the Blakeney United Church and was a life member of the Women's Missionary Society of the church. Surviving, besides her husband, are a daughter, Mrs J.H. Majaury (Margaret) of Almonte; a sister and a brother, Ethel and Stephen McArthur of Blakeney. The funeral was held on Friday from the Comba funeral home at 2 p.m., with interment being in the Auld Kirk cemetery. Rev Mr Henley officiated, assisted by Rev J. Ray Anderson of the Almonte United Church.

Mrs Robert Giles
The funeral of the late Mrs. Robt. W. Giles was held on Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 13th, from the family residence, Malcolm Street, to the Auld Kirk Cemetery. Services were conducted by Rev. H. C. Wolfraim, pastor of Bethany United Church, of which she was a member. Mrs. Giles was ill only a week and died in her 66th year on Sunday morning. Jan. 11th. The funeral was largely attended by relatives and friends. Two favorite hymns of deceased were sung: "What A Friend We Have In Jesus," and "Abide With Me." The pallbearers were, Thomas Barclay, Harvey Scott, James Edmonds, Ernest Adams, Delmer Johnson and Morris Turner, the first five neighbours of the family. Among the many floral tributes were pieces from Textile Union No ? 104; Weaving Dept., Rosamond Woolen Co. Ltd.. and the Car Dept. C.P.R., Smiths Falls. Among those who attended from a distance were friends from Ottawa, Smiths Falls, Carleton Place, Pakenham and Renfrew. The late Mrs. Giles was the former Jean Edith McArthur, a daughter of the late Stephen McArthur and his wife, Mary Turner of Ramsay Township. She was married to Robt. Giles on July 26th, 1904. He survives her together with five daughters and two sons, Namely, Mrs. Rae (Florence); Mrs. E. Baird (Laura); Mrs. Norman Sadler, (Jean); and Miss Mary of Almonte; Mrs. W. J. Carpenter (Eleanor), Smiths Falls; Ernest and Allan of Almonte. Twins, a son and daughter, predeceased her. There are also three sisters and two brothers ? Mrs. James Paterson (Jessie), Ramsay; Mrs. Reuben Giles (Bertha) and Miss Ethel of Blakeney; Archie and Stephen, Blakeney. Two sisters and one brother predeceased her, Mary, Elizabeth and John. There are 10 grandchildren. Mrs. Giles' greatest interest was in her home. She had a kindly disposition and her sudden passing will be regretted by all who knew her.

Mrs Wm H. Millar
The death occurred on Tuesday, Nov 20th, at the Rosamond Memorial Hospital, of Mary Turner, wife of the late William H. Millar. She was 76 years of age at the time of her death. The late Mrs Millar was born in Ramsay, a daughter of the late John Turner and his wife, Roseilla Barber. She was educated in the local schools and as a young woman married the late William H. Millar who predeceased her some years ago. Left to mourn her loss are two sons, Lawrence Edgar, John Raymond of Almonte, also five grandchildren and three great grandchildren and one sister. Emma, Mrs Wm McEwen of Ramsay and three brothers, John S. Turner of Carleton Place, Jas B. of Ramsay and P. Morris also of Ramsay. James Barber Turner, RR 3 Almonte, died January 31 in the Almonte Hospital at the age of 89.

Mr Turner was born November 16, 1890 in Ramsay township, the son of John Turner and Roseillia Barber. He grew up and lived all his life, working as a farmer.

On June 3, 1925, Mr Turner married Margaret Young Sutherland. He was a member of Almonte United Church.

Mr Turner is survived by his wife, one son, Russell, RR 3 Almonte, and three daughters, Evelyn (Mrs Bruce Sadler, Carleton Place), Ruth (Mrs John Steele, RR 1 Ramsay), and Mary (Mrs Harry Poole, Ottawa). He is also survived by a brother, P. Morris Turner, RR 2, Almonte, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Mr Turner is predeceased by one brother and five sisters.

A public funeral was held February 2, from Kerry's Funneral Home to Almonte United Church. The service was conducted by Reverend Cecil Dodds.

Burial took place at Auld Kirk Cemetery. Pallbearers were Boyd Jamieson, Glen Robertson, Stuart McDougall, Gorden Turner, Joe Turner and Roy Lowe. Honourary pallbearers were Ross Craig, Morden Dncan, Norman Paul, Vic Kellough, Howard Sadler, and George Gomme

Wilbert Paterson
Wilbert Erwin Paterson died at the Almonte General Hospital June 6, 1988, after a three month illness. He was 83. Mr Paterson was a life-long resident of Ramsay Township having been born in that township on April 11, 1905, a son to the late James Paterson and Jessie McArthur. He was educated at SS No 6 and 7 in Ramsay Township. On April 9, 1948, he married the late Katherine Peacock in Guthrie United Church in Clayton. Mr Paterson was a member of the Orange Lodge. He is survived by his nephew Delmer Paterson of RR 1 Almonte and his nieces Mary Connolly of Almonte, Marjorie Weir of RR 2 Almonte and Frances Cooper of Stittsville. Rev Jack Harper conducted the funeral service which was held June 8, 1988 at the C R Gamble Funeral Home in Almonte. Interment followed at the Auld Kirk Cemetery. Pallbearers included Jamie Paterson, Ian Barker, Jason Donahue, Trent Weir, Larry Connolly and Randy Connolly.

Mrs Peter A.E. Young
Following an illness of several months, the death occurred on Saturday, Jan 4th of Mrs Peter A.E. Young at the family residence, Cameron Street. Deceased was the former Sarah Ann Giles and was born in Ramsay Township, a daughter of the late Reuben Giles and his wife, Ann Duncan. In April 1904, she married Mr P.A.E. Young of Almonte and made her home in this town ever since. She is survived by one son, Ernest of Asbestos, Que, and by four brothers, namely, Albert of Almonte; George of Eden Mills, Ont; James of Smiths Falls and Robert John of Ottawa. Two other brothers predeceased her some time ago. Duncan of Thurso, Que, and Thomas of Smiths Falls. Mrs Young always took an active interest in church work and among the floral offerings was one from Circle Number Three of Bethany United Church. The funeral was held on Monday afternoon from the family home to the Auld Kirk Cemetery, services being conducted by Rev W.J. Scott, pastor of the church, which deceased attended. The pallbearers were Messrs W.A. Young, Dr. J.K. Kelly, T.J. Reid, Jno Easton, M.R. Young and George Etherington of Arnprior.

Ernest Clarence Giles
Long-time Almonte resident Ernest Clarence Giles died Aug 21 in the Almonte General Hospital at age 86. He was born in Fitzroy Township June 10, 1907 to the late Robert Giles and the late Jean MacArthur Giles. On April 24, 1929 he married the late Irene Marion Stewart MacGregor in Arnprior. A stationary engineer, Mr Giles lived most of his life in the Almonte and Renfrew areas. he was an elder with the Almonte Presbyterian Church. Mr Giles was a past master to the Royal Black Preceptory 639, Loyal Orange Lodge 378 and the Orange Young Britons 257. The Hope Street resident owned a 1906 Sawyer Massey steam engine which he exhibited at fairs around the area. Mr Giles is survived by sons Menzie of Ottawa and Elford of Almonte. daughter Irene Rath and sisters Mary Obrey, Laura Baird. Jean Sadler and Eleanor Carpenter. He was predeceased by son Ivan, brother Ivan and sister Florence Rae. Rev Grant Wilson led the funeral service at the C.R. There passed away in the Almonte General Hospital on Feb 19th, 1962, Melvin Sterling McEwen, eldest son of Emma Turner and the late Wm McEwen and brother of Wilbert McEwen of Ramsay. Russell Morris Turner
Life-long area resident Russell Morris Turner died March 11, 1999 at his home in Ramsay Ward. He was 69. Mr. Turner was born January 25, 1930 in Ramsay Township to parents James and Margaret. He was educated in Ramsay, and married Mary Jane Poole on August 16, 1951 in Almonte. Mr. Turner was a farmer as well as a school bus driver for 20 years. He was past master of Mississippi Lodge No. 147. He is survived by his wife Mary and his daughter Lana (Keith McDonald) of Lunenburg, Ont. The funeral took place in the chapel at Kerry Funeral Home March 15, 1999 at 11 a.m., with Rev. Robert Davis presiding. There will be a spring burial at the Auld Kirk Cemetery. Two Lose Lives As Fire Destroys Home In Ramsay
The citizens of Ramsay Township were awakened to stark tragedy in their midst early Wednesday morning, June 19 when two of their members lost their lives in a fire on the 7th line of the Township. The fire which destroyed the large stone home of Mr W.H. Poole, took the lives of his son, Edward, aged 35 and Edward's little son, Sterling, 5 years. In bed and asleep upstairs when the fire broke out were Mr and Mrs W.H. Poole, Edward and his wife Ruth, son Sterling and Brenda Lee Poole, year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Harry Poole of Ottawa. The fire broke out in the kitchen, living room below and had made tremendous headway when noticed. Edward broke the bedroom window and help his wife and Brenda Lee out of the window and dropped them to the ground. He then turned to rescue his son, nearby. His wife heard him call, "O Ruth, I'm gone," and it is believed the floor gave away. Mr and Mrs W.H. Poole were able to make their way outdoors via the front door of the house. Another son, Jack was in Ottawa at the time. Mrs Poole Jr., drove to Mr Robert Cochran's to call for help but their telephone was on the same circuit and was out of order. The Cochrans then went to Mr Milton Cochran's home and sounded the alarm. The siren sounded in Almonte about 1.15 a.m. and Almonte and Pakenham brigades responded. All they were able to do was to save the outbuildings. No reason has been advanced so far for the fire. The house was heated with an oil furnace and cooking was done with electricity. Mrs Ruth Poole and Brenda Lee are in the Almonte General Hospital. Mrs Poole is suffering from shock and severe foot injuries which include burns and cuts from broken glass. Brenda Lee suffered burns about the head. Mr and Mrs Poole are at the home of Mr and Mrs Robert Cochran at present. The Almonte Fire Brigade came back to town about 3.20 a.m. and returned to the scene at 5 a.m. They pumped water from the Indian River to cool the ashes so that the two bodies could be recovered.

Double Funeral Is Held For Victims of Fire
Impressive tribute to the memory of William Edward Poole aged 35 Years and his son William Sterling Poole, 5 years was paid at a double funeral which was held on Friday, June 21 from the Kerry Funeral Home to St. Paul's Anglican Church where the service was held at 2.30 p.m. Canon J. W, R. Meakin officiated assisted by former rector, Rev. R. S. V. Crossley of Stittsville. Mr. Poole and his son were the victims of the tragic fire which destroyed their home in the early morning of June 19. The father lost his life in a desperate effort to save his little boy. This tragedy deeply shocked the whole community and relatives and friends in large numbers attended to pay their last respects to the memory of Mr. Poole who was both a popular and highly respected farmer and his little son. St. Paul's Church could not accommodate those wishing to attend and the funeral cortege was the largest seen in this community for many years. William Edward Poole was the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Poole, 7th line of Ramsay Township and farmed with his father. He was born at Woodlawn and educated in the local schools there and came to Ramsay with his parents 19 years ago. Thirteen years ago he married Miss Ruth Turner who survives, but who is a patient in the Almonte General Hospital recovering from numerous burns. William Sterling was their only child. He also leaves his sorrowing sister Mary, Mrs. Turner of Ramsay and brothers Harry of Ottawa and Jackie at home. Interment was in the Auld Kirk Cemetery. The pallbearers for the father, were: John Cochran, Keith Cavanagh, Robert Naismith, Everett Dolan, Ron Steele and Alvin Buck. The pallbearers for the son were: Peter Cochran, Claude Cochran, Jimmie Cavanagh and John Poole. Beautiful floral tributes were received as further tokens of sympathy. Among them were tokens from Almonte IGA and staff. B. A. Thurston Ltd., Duncan's Poultry Farm. The Eastern Star, Staff Almonte Public Schools, Square Dance Club, St. Paul's Sunday School and teachers and the Eastern Ontario Jersey Breeders Association

GILES, Scott - Employee for the Pro Desk at Home Depot - Nepean Store (June 17, 1960 - July 22, 2011) With very heavy hearts, we let you know that Scott passed away on Friday. Going the way he would want to go, in his sleep, while dreaming of the next wood project. With sadness and to ask "why" he leaves behind his "sunshine" Judy Vance, his children "Spud" Bruce (Nicole Hall), "Pooh" Tara (Wayne Campbell) and his little "girlie" granddaughter Bronwyn. Scott was a Grandson of Ernie and Irene Giles (McGregor) and George and Agnes Smith (Murray) all predeceased. Scott was the son of Menzie Giles (predeceased) and Agnes Giles (Smith). He was the beloved brother of Debbie (Dennis Carey), Kathy (Wally Cieslukowski), Brent Giles (Charlene Audet), Brad Giles (Kim). He was son in law and great friend to Eddie and Ila (predeceased) Vance and another brother for Don (Janet), Bill (Melaina), Barry(Joanne) and Dale Vance. Special Uncle to Shannon, Maighan, Matthew, Ryan, Justin, Sherrie (Cory), Katie, Erin, Sandy, Gracey & Nathan. He also leaves behind many Aunts, Uncles and cousins. His love and companionship will be greatly missed by his extra special cousins the Patersons and their extended family.
